Bird box in top 3, hereditary “honorable mention” lel
Birdbox was shit. Hereditary was by better than BIrdbox by a mile.
This list was garbo. Bird box was a joke. Hereditary was golden.
I was thinking about subbing but if he liked Birdbox and not Hereditary I don't think i can watch him,
Justaddblood I haven't seen bird box but I thought hereditary was over rated. Not scary at all. A bit shocking perhaps but nothing that hasn't been done before
Just remember...he doesnt give a shit about wht ya'll think
Halloween was my personal favorite of 2018 but that's just cause I'm a huge Halloween fan lol the ending did leave a sour taste in my mouth tho. A quite place is an amazing movie i love the set up of the movie
I dont like how he doesn't like Halloween! But I can't change his opinion of course but Halloween was so good it's the only movie I want to get on digital just to get it a week early and watch it again!
@@morbalord1560 i have lost alot of hope for this cody guy. I even started my own top 5 video now bcz i almost feel cheated for following cody obly to disagree with him on this and have him tell me tht ultimatley he couldnt care less about wht we think
mainstreamer
HELL YES! summer of 84! such a great film
YES! So glad you put Overlord in your top 5, absolutely loved the film
I'm so happy I found your video! I've been on youtube for like 2 hrs searching a movie review youtuber and couldn't find anyone that I liked!! Loved your content!! Thank youuuu!
Awesome. Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for choosing some different movies to talk about! I haven't seen some of these, and I'm going to watch them now!
Been waiting for this. Are you doing a list of top 10 best movies of the year no matter what the genre is? Awesome video as usual Cody
Love giving a thumbs up when Cody reminds about me 4 movies I haven't seen yet.
First video and it was great! You just gained a new sub
Yes thanks for keeping it honest. Not as many mentions of The Ritual and loved that so Glad it is in your honorable mentions. Great list and thanks for sharing Cody!
Thank you
Your Top 5 List makes my Top 5 List of Best Top 5 Horror Movie Lists on UA-cam. So many of these lists seem to favor campy movies, body horror, zombie movies or just plain silly films that are entertaining but not the least big scary. Your list is unique because the films are actually scary. I saw all these except the last (which I'm going to go see now) and they were great films and yes, scary. I'm talking "The Descent" level scary. Films that can give you the chills. I believe Fargeat's "Revenge" came out in 2018 but that's not really horror. Great Job!
Thank you for Putting the ritual on this! I love that film! Hereditary definitely deserves this list and so does bird box! it is amazing and it is sad that bird box's release was so inconvenient. it is nowhere near a rip off of a quiet place.
Hereditary was my favorite. It definitely took some time for it to grow on me though.
I'd never heard of Summer of 84' before watching your top 5. I'm in man! I'm watching that right after I watch Mandy tonight. Thanks man! Great video!
Great list Cody! I need to see The Ritual but everything else I saw on your list.
Ohh shit Cody! Great list! I just got summer of 84 for Christmas. Haven’t gotten a chance to see it yet but now I absolutely can’t wait!
Cody! I just watched summer of 84. Its phenomenal the ending is terrifying when you really think about that he's still out there great review and great number one choice.
Glad you liked it
Love the new background! Hereditary is my favorite horror movie of the year! The acting,I agree with you about the couple of scenes with the son where the acting is not that great, but all the other performances were great, the score was awesome, the cinematography was great! I'll go as far as to say it's one of the best horror movies ever
love how your always unique, god I miss killer flicks (got banned from facebook) ill make a new one and be back soon
What?!? Halloween isn't on your top 5 list of 2018?!?!.... Good man! Like, and subscribed! Great list!
Thank you
Hey Cody have you seen a movie called Red Christmas?
Summer of 84 was excellent.. really enjoyed it. Nice vid bro😎👌
What i seriously love about your channel is that you have your own unique take on things. Even if i 100% disagree with an opinion you have, I still love it. It's honest and refreshing. More channels should take notes. Way too many similar biased views from a lot of people these days.
Thank you
Good list dude. I was surprised by your number 1, but that's pretty cool. For me, the best horror movie of 2018 would have to be A Quiet Place. It's got the best writing and story and it's very original. Strangers 2 and Bad Samaritan were also good. Looking forward to your next lists.
Great list!
So glad you enjoyed the ritual, I absolutely adore it
Speaking of horror movies, a friend of mine did his first review on one i haven't heard of, and I was wondering, have you head or seen 'The Terrifier'?
THANK YOU FOR NOT SAYING HALLOWEEN WAS YOUR NUMBER 1! I watched your review on it and wasn't that surprised it didn't even make an honorable mention. I totally agree with all of your top 5.
Good list you're the only one to mention one of my favorite movies in a long time Overlord that was a very Fun movie
Hereditary is my vote for best of 18. Best in a while, really.
Agreed
I agree with Hereditary for the most part... It missed me.
Great Video Cody !
Summer of 84 was insane! Definitely caught me by surprise and is easily my favorite film of 2018 due to the 3rd act. Also, that phenomenal theme music as the credits are rolling with the ending monologue sealed the deal
I really need to check out Overlord. It sounds like the Wolfenstien movie we are never going to get.
Hereditary is my top of 2018. Awesome Acting by the whole cast(Especially Toni Collette) eerie atmosphere throughout, cinematography on point, and a few scenes that really blew my mind. Great list Cody, always stoked to hear your thoughts! Cheers man!! 🍻
Summer of 84..... Yes! I'm glad to see someone else who liked this. I never heard of it before and I bought it online as a blind buy and had no idea what to expect and I loved it. ;)
Hey Cody I love that you had summer of 84 as your #1 I really thought you were going to have Halloween as #1 or 2 and I was ready to ask where was summer of 84 😂 but all in all you were the reason I bought summer of 84 when I saw your review for it. Awesome list though🙌🏻🙌🏻
Bird Box over Hereditary? Cody, you don't love yourself. :) I'll have to check out Summer of '84. Crap, I just canceled my Shudder
Yeah, I really didn't like Bird Box's ending... I really have to see Summer of 84! I highly appreciate your suggestions :D.
Have you read the book Bird Box? It's by Josh Malerman and directly after watching the film, I found out it was a book and ordered the audiobook.
Summer of 84 was so good!! Definitely reminded me of Stranger things and had a blend of Disturbia to it as well. Great film though. I agree with your whole 80’s persona rant lol
Props on THE DOMESTICS. That flick was bad ass with some nice heart at the core.
Agree with summer of 84, was a super awesome film. Watched it a few times now and never get bored with it and I thought the ending was super well done!
Halloween 2018 was the only horror film I saw last year. I personally love it. I know you don’t, but that’s okay. I respect your opinion. I do need to see some of these movies, especially Hereditary. Great list!
Summer of 84 was damn good with an ending that comes like a tight slap on the faces of audiences who are expecting a good-jolly film.
Nice list! I really enjoyed the first Unfriended, but so far have steered clear of the sequel. I'd heard it was pretty terrible, but honestly I'm worried it's going to be TOO scary for me because it's not supernatural. (reminds me of Welcome to the Game and omg did that game mess me up for weeks). But IDK, now that I see someone else, who liked the first one, say it's not bad... I might give it a shot one day (while it's still light out, not by myself, because I am a scaredy cat).
And now I've got a new movie to check out in Summer of '84. I was definitely curious what your number one was going to be because there was no way it could have been Halloween LOL.
I really like both Unfriended movies. They're pretty different from each other.
damn, ive been wit u for almost a year or so.. but bird box?!?! that was one of ur top 5 horror flicks this year?! over Hereditary?! sheeeeeeeeesh
Yes. Why is that so shocking if you've been here for a year?
@@CodyLeachYTprobably because bird box was super bland and hereditary wasn't just a good movie but also something pretty new. Bird box had a very typically American commercial script that was filled with some extreme coincidences. And had everything explained in detail for the audience (assuming we're too stupid to figure it out ourselves thanks) The cinematography was bland and uninspired so was the acting. The character development was either non existent or so in your face that it didn't come over as realistic in the slightest. Hereditary on the other hand has great and subtle character development, amazing cinematography (as you said yourself), a pretty smart script and it actually had meaning. The movie is filled with metaphors. It's obvious when watching the movie whether it was made with passion or not. Hereditary was, bird box wasn't.
@@INCBlackbird See heres then thing. These movies are subjective. Nobody watches them and gets the exact same thing out of them as the person next to them. So all this argument about what I liked more or less seems really ridiculous to me. Disagree by all means that's what the beauty of film is...but arguing like I'm factually wrong...ehhh.
@@CodyLeachYT there is a difference between "I like this movie" and "this movie is wrong" it's certainly not all subjective, I can easily enjoy a movie while knowing it's not very good and I can lack enjoyment in a movie that I know is good. And yes, it's difficult to be completely objective as a person, i'd even argue impossible, but we can strive to be as objective as we can. When I watch a movie I analyse it, ask myself what makes it "good" or "bad". I also wonder what made me enjoy it on a personal level (as you called it: what we get out of the movie). As a movie channel you have some authority, people listen to you, what you say has weight, so as an avid movie fan I just hope that people with that kind of authority actually know what they're talking about. And I'm not saying that you don't, this is literally the only video I've seen of you. But just know that it isn't all subjective. What makes a shot good is based all kinds of different factors like what the human eye finds pleasing to look at. That stuff didn't just come out of nowhere. If it was all subjective there wouldn't be filmschools, there wouldn't be books about movies cause none of it would have any meaning. You can enjoy bird box more than hereditary it's certainly easier and less demanding to watch but hereditary is still a more competent film, and you can know it's a more competent film while also enjoying bird box more.
*cody says Halloween isn’t #1*
Me: *are you kidding my little kidding butt that’s so kidding me-*
AHHHHHHH
Good list. My top five horror movies for the year...
5. The Endless
4. Suspiria (2018)
3. Hereditary
2. Summer of '84
1. Apostle
Still quite a few that I need to see, though, but another pretty good year for the genre.
Honorable mentions to Mandy, A Quiet Place, Halloween (2018), Revenge, & Unsane.
Loved the Ritual. Keep some time investigating about that nordic mythos. Love the design of the creature...
Strangers made me so mad watching it, up until the last 5 mins I was yelling at the people to do anything, a lot of the kills are people letting themselves be stabbed.
I hope Halloween 2018, Summer of 84 and Get Out are at least honourable mentions!!
Edit: I don’t dislike if I disagree with a movie opinion. I disagree when people say “I’m right your wrong”. Your too nice and too awesome for me to dislike you 😂!! I just watch these to here what people who I respect enjoy!!
Edit: Was Anna and the Apocalypse this year? I forget.
Yes it was but I didn't see that one
Cody Leach okay! Sometimes I forget the dates, Sorry!
Get Out was 2017
Literally had just finished Summer of 84 before watching this. Did not expect it a #1 or to even be on here because I'd barely heard of it. Really good film.
I loved summer of 84 you were the only person that ever mentioned this movie thank you
Glad you liked it
Think it’s time to finally watch “Summer of 84”
DeMarcus Murphy you won’t regret it
It’s a great film with an awesome soundtrack and they keep a great level of suspense throughout.
My thoughts exactly! So weird, I haven't even seen Hereditary, Overlord, Upgrade or Annihilation! Lots of Vudu viewing this month. Lmao
Don't waste your money
@@chuckbarkley2662 agreed it's dog shit
Oh man, I can not WAIT to see Summer of '84. I am alittle surprised to see Hereditary NOT crack your top 5, but I also have mad respect for you to NOT have Halloween in your top 5. My God is that movie overrated. You know how many people thought Halloween was the best horror film of this past year? It's insane. Yes it was good, but not GREAT, as so many people are claiming
Wait what twist was there in a quiet place I’ve watched the movie so many times and never noticed it
Very good list haven't seen them all will have to check out Summer of '84, but Quiet Place and Heredity were awesome!!!
This is the first fucking time I see summer of 84 mentioned in these tops, I'm so happy
OMG i thought everyone forgot about summer of 84!!! and i absolutely loved it!!
Love that you acknowledged Summer of 84
Dude I need to check out The Domestics stat!
Good Stuff!
Going to pick up Summer Of 84! Thanks Cody!! :)
Unsane was my number one horror of the year. Glad it made the list!
Love that movie
Weird that almost nobody talks about "Incident in a ghostland" aka "Ghostland". Pascal Laugier (who gave us the glorious original "Martyrs") strikes again big time and that is my #1 of the year when it comes to Horror. By far!
That's my pick too
I thought Ghostland was fantastic!
That was easily my # 1 of 2018 as well. Not just for horror, but for movies in general.
@@thehitherto5348 Was the same for me during most of the year. Only "Aquaman" topped it for me, because I loved the visuals and directing so much, but right after that "Ghostland" stands tall in my list. That is, why I wonder nobody even watched it. Only 'Those Horror Pals' covered it, but all the other big Horror reviewers I came across... total silence. Maybe they still sit on a couch with Lovecraft and debate about finding the right words? :D
I believe Spookyastronauts reviewed it a while back, but you're right, it got strangely little exposure.
Was it ever given a cinematic release in the US tho? Here in Europe it was released very early on last year, and I never heard anything about how it fared overseas.
Just realized ghost stories was not in 2018. My bad. Is hereditary really that good cody? Trying to convince my family to watch it with me...
hereditary is my personal fav. also loved:
The Endless
A Quiet Place
Halloween
Unsane
Overlord
A Quiet Place
Suspiria
Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween
Truth or Dare
Halloween 2018
The Nun
Unfriended: Dark Web
The Predator
The First Purge
Unsane
Leprechaun Returns
The Meg
Insidious: The Last Key
The Cloverfield Paradox
Traffik
The Possession of Hannah Grace
Hereditary
Hellraiser: Judgement
Children of the Corn: Runaway
The Hurricane Heist
Slenderman
Deep Blue Sea 2
Complete horror ranking from worst to best.
I felt the same about Wyatt Russell until I saw his Black Mirror episode. You got to get on that show if you havent seen them yet! But yeah he killed it in Overlord.
Honestly, there are only 2 horror movies that I truly loved this year, so here are the top 2.
1. A Quiet Place, this film is true tension the whole way through, and its a blast from start to finish. It is probably the funnest theatre experience I have ever had, my friend who I went to see it with was constantly trying to hold me tight like a baby he was so scared, god i love this movie.
2. Before I Wake, this movie does not seem all that well recieved for the most part but I adore it. It is such an emotional horror film with really interesting ideas and it explores elements of life that are hard to cope with in an interesting way and to me that's what makes a truly great horror movie.
By the way, for shits and giggles, Halloween is my worst horror movie and movie in general of 2018 ;)
Had to pause I trust your opinions as well as drumdums so I'll have to check out summer of 84 I never heard of it, for 2018 I loved Halloween, Hereditary and quiet place, I'm a huge Halloween fan as much as I loved it they had alot of flaws I'm hoping the 2020 sequel is better
PYEWACKET is a great horror film that you definitely need to check out. PYEWACKET got its wide release in 2018 so I'm surprised it didn't make your list.
There were so many great horror movies this year, could easily do a top 15 horror movies of 2018, didn't even hear of the domestics going to look for it later today
Enjoy!
Thank you for giving Birdbox such a high rating. The story was suspenseful. The twist with psychos being impervious to the death stare of the spirits was brilliant. I even liked the ending, as it was clever. It had a few faults.....but overall? Very well done and well crafted film.
And Summer of '84? While I struggled a little with the first two acts, the third act totally redeemed the movie. Loved it.
bird box and the ritual were both books I really enjoyed this year, but wasnt /as/ in love with the film version. I think a lot of the bits of the films that left me unsatisfied, were in the books, which is unfortunate bc it means the majority will never get that resolved for them. definitely recommend both books, the ritual is significantly different, in a good way.
A big hi from chicago. I watched ghost stories with my husband some months back. Really enjoyed it until...the end. I couldnt believe they used the same old trope for the ending. What a let down. Understand its a play too. I guess when the story is live, it might be felt differently. But i can tell you from a horror lovers perspective....bleech...the same tired old trope. And i really was enjoying it too, some excellent jump scares. But that ending...
Is Summer of 84 on Netflix?
I missed a lot of horror movies this year, but my favorite was easily Suspiria.
Totally agree about Dark Web, loved that film. I gotta see Overload, wanted to see it but wasn't able to get out and see it.
I would love to see Overlord but sadly I’m absolutely terrified of zombies.
The Ritual is one of my favorites of 2018 it felt refreshing an I’ll have to check out Sumer of 84. Had a lot of fun with I Unfriended Dark web.
The Ritual is a 2017 film though isn't it? it was on so many '17 lists aswell as mine haha! I admit some films have different releases due to areas though! My top Horror film of 2018 has to be Incident in a Ghostland!
Didnt release in the US til '18
I have stopped the video, have Been wanting to see “Summer of 84” for a while norw. Thank you for the recommendation cause I know I need to see it now!!!
Just noticed Freddy and Micheal in he background lol, that’s a good background
'Hereditary' is one I thoroughly enjoyed, but truly got into it on the rewatch.. and, my classic horror loving ass couldn't resist 'Halloween' or 'It'. I loved Tim Curry's performance in the TV miniseries but, the details in the new, actual movie were spot on for me.
Wait, 'It' came out in 2017 - my bad; it's just one of my favourite books and I'm anticipating part two.. but, they'll both [hopefully] land in the top of my list for the past decade and I'm getting old so, years mesh together anymore. 😛😛
Check out Wyatt Russell in the black mirror episode playtest, he gives an amazing performance.
I also liked A Quiet Place better than Hereditary, although both would be in my top 3 horror movies of 2018. Ill have to check out some of your other picks I havent even heard of.
5. The strangers prey at night
4. Hellraiser judgment
3. Halloween 2018
2. Hereditary
1. A quite place
You should watch Incident In Ghostland (or just Ghostland). It would have made your Top 5 Best Horror Movies of 2018. It's great. Cecil from The Horror Show said he liked it more than Summer of 84.
Summer of 84 was fucking amazing
I love that background music
Almost unsubbed when he didn't put hereditary in top 5 and did put Birdbox which is fucking trash but I still love you Cody man, you do you
Problem with Bird Box is the non-linear way of telling the story takes away suspense because you know who lives and who dies.
Didnt bother me. It was about Sandra Bullock and her evolution.
Completely agree with you on Summer of 84 not my number 1 but top 5 for sure.
Absolutely
"if you looking at me like wtf is summer '84 stop the video and going to watch it and then come back to the video"
That's exactly what I did and it was worth it
If you like summer of 84 I highly recommend rear window it is a great movie
I didnt think Summer of 84 was that good, but it had its moments. I thought the ending was absolutely fantastic though!
I agree Summer Of 84 felt like a Strangers Things knock off until the ending. I was really surprised the filmmakers went there.
My favorite horror movie I've seen this year is A Quiet Place I've got a lot of catching up I need to do on horror movies though
5. Hell Fest
4. Annihilation
3. A Quiet Place
2. The Strangers: Prey at Night
1. Halloween
