I started listening to OPIV in 1989 and when the first Rancid album came out in 1993 I was absolutely blown away and I still believe that album is by far one of the greatest punk albums ever.

For those of you arguing about whether this song is punk, you have obviously have no knowledge of The Clash, Operation Ivy, Fugazi, etc. All of these bands had ska and reggae influences, and I can't imagine anyone saying they aren't punk. Rancid is, and will always remain, one of the best of the modern punk bands.

    • @thereggaeinstitute
      @thereggaeinstitute 2 роки тому +77

Of course posers won't find this punk. They won't even know that punk had tons of influences from reggae and ska. Steel Pulse, the Great reggae band, used to play at punk venues.

      First song Roots Radical.
      Second song Timebomb
      Third song I wanna riot
The second we saw shadows on the dark stage two dudes I did not know, grabbed me and one says "How's it feel to be the first one up at the Rancid show?" And before Tim got to the word sixty I was in the air against my will! 🤣🤣

This takes me back to the days when growing up in the UK. The songwriters were clever in the way they addressed social, racial, and political ills to music written most often in a major key. Beyond the music of the 1950's and 1960's, it was a defining moment in the mid-70's and beyond for western music. This "ska" music noted the amalgam of reggae and energy of punk rock at an important time of social unrest in the 20th century. No one can forget such bands as The Specials, Bad Manners, and The Selecter (Two-Tone), etc. Even the Police in the early days were listed as "ska punk." One seldom forgets moments of originality.

  • @zombiesquad3339

If you have to argue about exactly what punk "is" then you're missing the point. Punk is all about doing what you want, regardless of what people think of you. It's about being your own individual. That's Rancid.

    Time Bomb
If you wanna make the move then you better come in
It's just the ability to reason that wears so thin
Living and dying and the stories that are true
The secrets to a good life is knowing when you're through
    Black coat
    White shoes
    Black hat
    Cadillac, yeah
    The boy's a time bomb
    Black coat
    White shoes
    Black hat
    Cadillac, yeah
    The boy's a time bomb
Well he's back in the hole where they got him living
Like a rat but he's smarter than that nine lives like a cat
Thirteen years old, take him to the youth authority home
First thing you learn is that you got to make it in this worldalone
    Black coat
    White shoes
    Black hat
    Cadillac, yeah
    The boy's a time bomb
    Black coat
    White shoes
    Black hat
    Cadillac, yeah
    The boy's a time bomb
Now he's gotten out, he gotten free, he gotta go
Gotta car, he's 21 years old he's runnin' numbers from the bar
His pager's beepin', he's gotten deep in
What ever he can move on in you know that kid's a creepin' in
    Black coat
    White shoes
    Black hat
    Cadillac, yeah
    The boy's a time bomb
    Black coat

    Black hat
    Cadillac
    The boy's a time bomb
    The boy's a time bomb
Tears come from the razor that's been tattooed below his eye
His mother cries she knows that he is strong enough to die
He's rollin' in the Cadillac it's midnight
Sunroof is down, three shots rung out of here and then
    The new king is crowned
    Black coat

    Roupa preta

O garoto é uma bomba relógio
    Roupa preta
    sapatos brancos

The funniest thing about all the 'this isn't punk' arguments is what the band would say about it.
Probably, they'd give the punkest of answers and tell us they really don't give a fuck what genre anybody thinks it is, they play what they like.

This sounds like a bit of a blend of different genres and I just love it. It has a very positive vibe. Sometimes, I don't really care about the genre but more about the spirit of the tune. I don't want to wallow in self-pity or rage against the machine. I want to rock out and dance happily. I know it sounds weird, but I can people playing this song and seeing their toddlers happily dancing around the living room to this. Good stuff. I like this one.
