British band Madness had a major UK hit with this song in 1981, and with good reason: heartfelt and nutty in equal measure it still brings the house down at every Madness show. The video - filmed above and below water - is one of their classics, with cameo appearances by big bird, a killer whale and Mr Labi Siffre, who wrote the song.
Lyrics
I never thought I'd miss you
Half as much as I do
And I never thought I'd feel this way
The way I feel
About you
As soon as I wake up
Every night, every day
I know that it's you I need
To take the blues away
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
Nothing more, nothing less
Love is the best
How can it be that we can
Say so much without words?
Bless you and bless me
Bless the bees
And the birds
I've got to be near you
Every night, every day
I couldn't be happy
Any other way
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
Nothing more, nothing less
Love is the best
As soon as I wake up
Every night, every day
I know that it's you I need
To take the blues away
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love

After 28 years of marriage my husband passed on Valentines day this year, This was always our tune and played it at his funeral, He loved me always like I was his queen, and even though my tears flow when your song starts to play by the end I am smiling and remembering the way he always looked at me and sang the words while we danced away, Thank you Madness for giving me a banging tune to remember my Gary
I am so sorry. Such a beautiful story!!
So sorry for your loss Maggie. Keep singing and loving Gary every day. :* )
So sorry to hear that. But wonderful it still brings out such wonderful memories.
❤️
Your husband had excellent tastes in music, I'm really sorry for your loss.
Anyone here because they just like madness?
Not like. LOVE. It must be that.
@@catherinel1374 You, my lady, are a genius.
Yeah I don’t need godd@mn commercials to find music lol
I'm here because I like Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass but clicked the wrong video.
@@Jeremy-ql1or then why are you going through the comments instead of just going back?
Fun fact: The violinist on the right (0:44, 1:26, 2:17, etc.) is Labi Siffre, the writer and original recording artist of this song.
He honestly loved the cover so much that he asked to be in the video!
And you see him on 3:21. The camera goes right to his face. He's Smiling.
I only just found out this week he wrote this gem! The Madness version got more air time I guess
@@davidwright4495That's lovely when he takes his s/glasses off and smiles!
I came here looking for him and thought so. Thanks for the clarification ❤

Madness is genuinely one of the most underappreciated british bands of our time
In the US yes, not in Britain or South America for instance. They are still selling out shows and performing at the UK’s biggest festivals, just look at some of their shows on UA-cam. They are definitely under appreciated in the US but most good music is.
More so for Labi Siffre, the original songwriter.
genuinely stunned, amazed in fact, that you resisted the youtube comments section 'underrated' fetish and opted instead for 'underappreciated'. Still, the psychosis largely holds....
In the US perhaps, madness were huge in Europe and S America
Thanks for sharing rizz-god1987
The most underrated group in British pop culture. How come Suggs hasn't been given a Knighthood?
because unlike Sir Jimmy Savile he hasn't
Knighthoods are worthless titles, Bowie declined one, that should tell you everything you need to know about them.
busterkeatonsbriefs Titles are ackoledgements of your service, Not a ticket to more money and success, It's just like a trophy.
You got right.
Don't think Suggs is much of a royalist.
This song is better than 98% of the songs on the charts today. Fantastic.
early 80s classic
Do you mean 100%?
The song is actually a cover the original was LABI SIFFRE - It Must Be Love (1972)
Its better than 100%😁😁😁
Yes when bands had there own sound the saxophone is just heaven awesome song loved this song since it first came out madness brilliant with out a fact
I think this song is so disarming, a genuinely beautiful cover by Madness. The arrangement is perfect.
Madness is criminally underrated!
Absolutely
I agree
They're not though are they? They are very massively and well regarded. Luther original composer/writer of this song is a truly underrated artist.
Never underated, over used comment.
I've said it about many bands and artists but truly Madness must be the most underrated band in the world
They had more songs in the charts in England than ,Madonna 👊
I think think they are still very highly regarded in their home country of England, but here in the U S A, there is probably a pretty solid base of fans around my age who still love them for the songs and videos on MTV in the early 1980s
@Vlad The Lad actually you're right. These comments are always underrated.
No gotta be kinks or dexys midnight runners
XTC is even more underrated, yet geniuses
One of the greatest songs ever written, in my opinion.
@Truth Reigns Forever 😘
This is a cover of a Labi Siffre song written in 1971, cheers
I agree!

Songs so British it turned my teeth crooked and made me hate the french

Labi Siffre, what a talent.
I've just recently discovered his work, and while I was a Madness fan before due to my ska 'phase', I love that there was this connection.
and Labi Siffre in the heavenly orchestra - gives a smile to the camera - what a gent
ua-cam.com/video/eTeGwNHEEFk/v-deo.html
Also shows the madness has respect to the original song
True rows, bless Brother!
Of course he's smiling: he must have made a small fortune from the royalties.
I thought that might be him! Thanks for the confirm.
So happy that Labi Siffre is in the video
2024 ... still loving this ... anybody else with me ? :)
Abso-frigging-lutely!! 😃
Of course...
For some reason I just had to hear House of Fun last week and I got pulled into a Madness video vortex. Now I'm listening to this and various others at least once per day.
It must be love....
Every one is with you
It Must Be up there with the best ever songs !
dedicate this one to my late father. rip my best friend 13/7/1972 - 26/4/2024
So sorry love...he was young. RIP ❤
Great British Band
Niceeee
Fun Fact: The original creator of the song, Labi Siffre, makes a cameo in this video as the violinist on the furthest right.
I think that is common knowledge to be fair!
Most of older people know.
Shitty "fun fact". Everyone knows that.
No i didnt
maybe he plays the violin in the recording
John lennons favourite band before he passed, so you know Madness are legit!
@Khalid Al Mutawaa give a shit what lennon thinks .. Madness were legit without his sorry ass input
@@davidkindness6791 why are you trying to sound like an American?
@@mickduncan3564 are you trying to sound like an idiot
Is it ok if this American has loved Madness for forty years, no matter what John said? Huge Beatles fan too, but their word isn't the law to me.
@@WinslowLeach1974 Course it is!! Just hate it when British people come on here and post comments in American accents, too much time on youtube lol, no one and i mean NO ONE, says ¨sorry ass input¨ in the UK
Madness music videos are always so fun to watch
Wat I could watch all they're music videos in a row ! they're so original
One of the few that are worth watching.
I should try it sometime, rather than spending the whole song browsing the comments
I know
They're Madness
Madness always having fun
It was absolutely fantastic
growing up in the 80s listening
to music like this.
Great Times.
I’m 13 and I know many bands like madness, oasis, queen and many more because my dad many people say he raised me well with music !
HE HAS!!!!
Dude go even further back, you’ll find gold.
If this doesnt play at my wedding i'm not getting married
I support that! 😉
I get the feeling it will 🤣
It was at our wedding, what better song?
Aw so hope so xxxxx
I bet I can guess your birthday .
Always and forever, thank you to Great Britain and the British people whose creativity, since the 1960s, has given the rest of the World hundreds of unique bands such as the Madness and music of unparalleled beauty, quirkiness and atmosphere. What would our lives have been without British bands?
Benedetto Bruno were really not that great no better than another country but saying that I'm happy here
eye like muse who come not far from me
Just what I thought, I’m a member of an American rock band and I just wish we took some inspiration from British bands, but it’s hard because they don’t listen to me lol
This is a great cover of a Labi Siffre song -he's in the video smiling at the end. I'm not sure if he's British by birth or not.
@@Jossette888 Labi Siffre was born in London.
Got married to this song the best song ever....😊

Timeless and still greatest band of their era.
Madness still loving this song
This song will forever be a classic. Simply timeless
Yes it will
I'm a lunatic, and it gives me some comfort to know that I'm not alone. Only Madness could produce a video for a love song dressed as undertakers, brilliant!!!!!!!
Tribble Booth that intro with them standing at the edge of an empty grave, always makes me giggle
Love their tongue in cheek humour
The Kinks did that in '66 - "dead end street" ;D
Lol join the club I'm mad 2

Such a fun, happy, quirky band of fellows. There will NEVER BE another decade of music like the 80's ❤
This is such a sweet song. Niceness and Madness.
The 2nd British Invasion of the early 80’s was a gravest time for music. We need another one to revive the music industry.
how many of us had and still have a heartbeating crush on suuuuuuggggsssss!!!

Best (Love)Song ever...
Labi Siffre in the video smiling all the way to the bank 😊😊😊😊
That's a really touching Easter Egg, and yep, he's got that ear-to-ear smile on his face, not only because of the endorsement of his art by Madness thinking enough of it to bring it to a new generation, but yeh, those royalties gonna see him into his autumn years...

One of the best British bands of all time...and there's a lot of 'em!
Suggs is a British legend. Madness was a great band and they made a lot of classic songs. 👍👍👍
The years just rewind & im back at school going to youth club playing space invaders going to the social club discos not a care in the world just fantastic memories thats what madness bring to the table a very special band
It's truly great how they've honored doughboys.
Best love song ever written.
+Lita Dark Go to Labi Siffre. He wrote the song that made a hit a decade earlier. Labi is in this video as the last violin player. Write some songs.

All this time ... All I've known was Our House. I dig it. I really do.

Labi Siffre was one of the violinists! All these years and i never noticed that bit. Showing Madness much respect and vice versa!❤️
Probably my favourite Madness song of all
Madness is a madness
Such a happy 😊 band
Makes me feel old. 1981 - the year I left school. Thumbs up, if you agree with me. 1980's BEST Decade for new bands and music!!
No
I lived as a schoolboy through the '80s, and I think that decade was quite poor for pop music compared to the sixties and seventies. It's continued to decline since. Why do people always think the decade when they were young was the best?!

Incredible to think this only made number 4 back in the December of 1981, it should have been that year’s Christmas number 1, alas it was Don’t you want me baby.

I remember crying too this song as,a teenager after a breakup . Now I'm older I realise wasted tears
Count me in.Touch of Madness.
This song holds wonderful memories for me.
So underrated. They deserved more recognition,
2 days ago Madness preformed this song in Amsterdam. Of course the audience sang along ❤❤❤
the strings at 2:38 are divinely inspired. they seem to yearn and swell as the song builds, mirroring the lyrics. given that most of the strings for this song are plucked sticatto notes, the contrast of the drawn out sliding tonges really helps add to the impact of this moment, and differentiates it from the rest of the song. its as if they where played on his very own heartstrings
Had my first kiss to this
Crazy.....if it wasn’t For Tv reporting on the Madness touring right now in Germany I wouldn’t have known that this Excellent Song is from Madness......the Band which is known to me because of “Our House”......so Hats Off Madness.....this Hit is Yours Aswell!
What a lovely and British Song in the Best Sense thinkable! Great, Great, Great Stuff🇬🇧✌️❤️👏👏👏👏👏👏
It Sure takes an Old and Good Soul to come up with a Song like that! Long Live England!

@@reggiekray270 I was born less than a month before the millennium ended, and I like music from the '80s and earlier…there's some good newer music but it generally doesn't get very popular.
