It really warms my heart to hear metal musicians talk about old In Flames in that way... I don't know where the whole Melodeath scene and just Metal in general would be without the greatness of Jesper Strömblad's musicianship and sense for melody.
Yeah unfortunately in flames aren't the same without him, I still don't think they as terrible as people say but he definetly added that extra kick to there sound that there missing now
@@metalkid2923 Bjorn is credited on 3 songs from that album. Glenn too. The bulk of it was written by Jesper, as is the case for Whoracle. That's what Gepic's point was about: without Jesper, melodeath would be nowhere, just like it would be nowhere without Jonas and Anders Bjorler from ATG and Henriksson from DT
Bjorn was just as much responsible when he moved over to guitar from drums in IF, he doesn't get enough credit IMO. He has an insane sense of melody as well as being a great songwriter. You really see him shine through in Colony and Clayman. The Gothenburg scene was just a perfect storm of talent in all of these bands at a time when metal was somewhat in it's prime in the 90's. I'm stoked to see IF back to form with Foregone, I think we could see a bit of a revival.
The solo in December Flower is amazing. This whole album is essential listening. I think Whoracle may have been tracked at the same time as Jester Race?
The december flower solo was not performed by a memeber of in flames. it was a guest guitarist for that song, this is why they never really play that song live and when they do they skip the solo.
In Flames!!! INCREDIBLE sound. I was listening to But-Rock (Creed, Nickleback...)in the early 2000s. Then I heard In Flames Trigger. Opened up my mind to real music.
Ember to Inferno wasn't even out yet when I discovered In Flames but I had the same experience as Matt, after pretty much only listening to Metallica and a handful of other bands from American metal growing up my mind was completely blown when I first heard in Flames. Dialogue with the Stars, Episode 666, and Zombie Inc were the first songs from this band that really truly grabbed me and never let go. In Flames showed me how metal THIS heavy really could have melody and it was amazing. Then I found Trivium and they brought me to even new levels of appreciation. Amazing amazing amazing
In flames has always been my favorite band for the same reasons. Soundtrack to your escape was my introduction to them when I was like 15. I remember before listening to only American bands like Godsmack,Metallica, soad etc. Once I heard how they connected melody and melody like that it instantly became my favorite metal sound.. eventually it led me to trivium and I could hear the influences. Embers to inferno i believe was the first trivium album I had. But whoracle, jester race, colony and clayman i believe are the very pinnacle of this sound.
There's also a big Power Metal influence on that era of In Flames. Heck, Jesper was part of HammerFall when they started. I can hear traces of Helloween/Gamma Ray in some of the instrumental parts of this very song.
Everyone needs to check out the new band the Halo Effect.. All ex In Flames members and it sounds like 90s In Flames with the vocalist of Dark Tranquillity.
I would suggest another Gothenburg band that really captures that 90s-00s melodeath sound. They're called In Flames and they just released a sick single. If i'd listened blind to the instrumentation i'd guess halo effect was in flames and in flames halo effect.
a lot of the Halo Effect album sounds like modern Dark Tranquillity + some '90s-style In Flames melodies, except way more slanted toward DT's sound. I still like it, but it's not as amazing as some of the singles made me think it would be.
So good to understand where Trivium evolved from, particularly bands I love in Dark Tranquility, In Flames as well as the Gothenburg scene. Finally got to see In Flames live the other month and met Björn which was so cool.
That's actually where they get the name for the band aswell, it's to represent the 3 subgenres coming together Tri- Melodic death metal, Thrash metal and Metalcore. Atleast this is what I read in a interview before
Awesome dude 🤘😝. I didn't realize how much of an influence In Flames had on him. I just saw both Trivium and In Flames in concert (along with Lamb of God and Megadeth♡), they all kicked so much ass♡♡♡ ✌😊✌
props to heafy for talking up the melodeath bands from the 90s. Were the same age and the vast majority of metal guys in our age range now act like these bands werent the main way they got into heavy music. Anyone millenial metalhead who acts like they were born listening to burzum, hellhammer and mayhem was rocking in flames, soilwork, bodom etc when they were 16/17
At late 90s a good friend of mine who owned a small record store handled me this wonderful album. I’ve become an instant fan of In Flames since then. The Jester Race is a true masterpiece
TJR was the first album I ever heard by In Flames, super inspiring sound throughout the entire album, the melodic harmonies were certainly the one trait that separated their sound from the rest.
I was lucky to catch in flames in their support of slipknot Iowa tour in 2002, in flames were pushing reroute to remain at the time and that was my introduction into my 2nd favourite band of all time. The missing piece to all metalcores early bands I think (the main piece being Metallicas thrash)
I really like: In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and At the Gates, but some other great MDM bands are Gates of Ishtar and Sacrilege. Its just hard to find the first album by Gates of Ishtar on ITunes and in physical form. When it comes to early In Flames some of my favorite tracks are, Goliaths Disarm Their Davids, Gyroscope, Lord Hypnos, and Moonshield.
I’m a huge IF fan (though paradoxically one of the rare IF fans that doesn’t really like the early stuff that much compared to newer stuff like Sounds of a Playground and I, The Mask. My issue with the early stuff was never instrumentation but the all-scream vocals. Once Anders started really learning to actually sing my love for the band took off. The sing-to-scream ratio of 50:50 or so is one of the reasons I fell in love with bands like Trivium, A7X (WtF) and Killswitch. Really appreciate hearing Matt’s thoughts on IF as he is so well-versed in the metal scene and a tremendous guitar player/writer/vocalist!
My first exposure to the more extreme styles of music was through coming across ‘Take This Life’ on the Guitar Hero 3 bonus track set list as a 9 year old back in ‘06. It blew my mind how a band could be so heavy and yet simultaneously so catchy when it came to their guitar parts and choruses.
When I was young I used to listen to In Flames and Trivium was one of those commercial bands that I never cared about it's funny cause this is the 2nd time I see the frontman of Trivium playing a song by In Flames.
Purchased the Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance split here in Australia, early 2003. Their best work by far, another great band that took it to another level was Gates of Ishtar, all their work is phenomenonal but the standout is At Dusk and Forever.
Matt heafy showing artifacts of the black rain?! Awesome!! Ive seen them play together like 3 times! Once with COB too!! Its cool that theyre fans too!! Why wouldnt you be?? HAHAHA!!
Became a huge fan of In Flames from guitar hero 3 and binging their whole discography. Literally no one else I’ve met knows them so I got my gf into them, seeing other fans makes me super happy. I hope in flames plays at aftershock since they’re touring with meshuggah
Whoracle and Jester Race are two of my favorite albums of all time. I don't know why they aren't included in the top 20 metal albums of all time in most of the lists. They are masterpieces especially Jester Race
And it was great. Perfect blend of American aggressive metal and melodic guitar sensibilities of Gothenberg-style. Gothencore got overdone heavily and pretty quickly, but so did melodeath as a whole, too. But they both got so popular and copied quickly cuz they were genuinely great.
First song I heard from them was trigger on Cronix aggression radio back on winamp. I always listened to punk rock and just happened to click that channel and I was transformed into another person when I heard that song.
ALSO i just wanna shoutout a metalcore/melodeath scene that is hugely under-represented the H8000 scene from belgium, bands like arkangel, heaven shall burns first album, and many others, hugely influenced metalcore and melodeath and hardcore forever
That entire album is packed full with some of the richest guitar harmonies ive ever heard. Read that they multi tracked up to 8 guitars at a time on some of the parts.

Really likes Goliaths Disarm their Davids on the Black-Ash Inheritance edition.
Jester Race is one of my desert island albums. It’s back to back bangers.

Never thought of this, but it's damn right!
The first hammerfall album is my favorite. The vibe of Jesper is very clear....also Synergy first album.
My first metal concert was when Trivium opened up for In Flames at The Roxy in Atlanta, 2006!
Everyone needs to check out the new band the Halo Effect.. All ex In Flames members and it sounds like 90s In Flames with the vocalist of Dark Tranquillity.
It's pretty awesome that Mikael was a session member when he did vocals for the first album, Lunar Strain.
I've heard a couple songs yes it's good. So far....

I'm so happy Heaven Shall Burn got a shout out on here. Love that band.
One of the most Influential melodeath bands that gets no credit lol, love them.
Cloud Connected was my introduction to their work. I think that track is a masterpiece.
Best In Flames album hands down. 🔥🔥🔥

Very cool shoutout to the Gothenburg scene and tying in melodic death metal and trivium. Love the little history lesson
Love to see some love for this song - it’s heavily underrated! One of the funnest songs to play for sure
I basically had the same experience around the same age and time, but it was Moonshield. Cool video
Haven is probably my favorite DT album. Oh my gosh. It is sooo good.
In Flames early albums are legendary
Favorite In Flames album!
At late 90s a good friend of mine who owned a small record store handled me this wonderful album. I’ve become an instant fan of In Flames since then. The Jester Race is a true masterpiece
i love that matt shows love for other bands
This is the first track I heard from In Flames. Whole album is still one of the best albums ever released for me.
Yup! In Flames and their journey has been fantastic, huge influence on myself also.
Great video by Matt. Now PG, give us some content from Jesper and Björn. In Flames and The Halo Effect both have new albums coming out soon.
TJR was the first album I ever heard by In Flames, super inspiring sound throughout the entire album, the melodic harmonies were certainly the one trait that separated their sound from the rest.
Gothenburg scene in the 90's set the base for melodeath. At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames.
I was lucky to catch in flames in their support of slipknot Iowa tour in 2002, in flames were pushing reroute to remain at the time and that was my introduction into my 2nd favourite band of all time. The missing piece to all metalcores early bands I think (the main piece being Metallicas thrash)
Bring on more content like this please. Thanks Matt for the great lesson.
I am still blown away by in flames regardless of era. Early stuff has inspired my playing too.

For me the haunted's early stuff and obviously Arch Enemy are top tier melo death too
Great vid. Jotun is also amazing. Maybe next episode ? :)
The Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance is melodically mind blowing. Especially when realizing it was ground breaking at the time.
Great song and I’ve been listening to it since it came out. You’re playing it about 95% correctly.
In Flames was so great in those days. I still love it

"Artifacts..." makes me a huge In Flames fan in 2000, everyone loves Teen Pop, but Gothemburg scene sends a light of little hope in the horizon.
When I was young I used to listen to In Flames and Trivium was one of those commercial bands that I never cared about it's funny cause this is the 2nd time I see the frontman of Trivium playing a song by In Flames.
Old in flames tracks are so fun to play

I never knew I’d like this song in this key but holy shit 😩
In Flames will forever and always be top tier.
This song is amazing!
In Flames and Heaven shall Burn are probably my top bands ever.
My fav song from them❤❤❤
Nothing will ever touch old In Flames.
00s metalcore was 100% *inspired by/stolen* riffs from 1995 at the gates´ slaughter of the soul and early in flames
True 💯
Very true. In Trivium’s song A Gunshot To The Head Of Trepidation the main riff sounds pretty similar to Blinded By Fear by At The Gates
And it was great. Perfect blend of American aggressive metal and melodic guitar sensibilities of Gothenberg-style. Gothencore got overdone heavily and pretty quickly, but so did melodeath as a whole, too. But they both got so popular and copied quickly cuz they were genuinely great.
Should've stayed this away. Enough of this djent crap. Bring back melodies!
Matt Rocks!
Jester race so good
Such a killer track!
Jester Race through to Reroute is practically perfection
What's your favorite Sigh album?
Mine is probably Infidel Art, or Imaginary Sonicscape
@@wilaim8549 Imaginary Sonicscape is great. Also love In Somniphobia
In flames 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This song is from 1996 and that's what i got into death metal , i never leave since then ...
90s In Flames is absolutely amazing
I like all In Flames but nothing absolutely nothing touches albums like Jester Race, Whoreacle, Clayman and Colony
The Jester Race has and never will leave my top 10 albums of all time.
I enjoy all in flames music regardless of era
I don’t dig Trivium but Matt is legit. And the Ibaraki album is really good.
If you like melodic death metal, tan a listen to Mors Principium Est. MINDBLOWING!
Sucks that Andy left, especially on bad terms with Ville. Really digged Andy's work with MPE.
First song I heard from them was trigger on Cronix aggression radio back on winamp. I always listened to punk rock and just happened to click that channel and I was transformed into another person when I heard that song.
in flames jester race is one of the best and most prolific metal albums to ever come out, change my mind
ALSO i just wanna shoutout a metalcore/melodeath scene that is hugely under-represented
the H8000 scene from belgium, bands like arkangel, heaven shall burns first album, and many others, hugely influenced metalcore and melodeath and hardcore forever
Fucking awesome 👌
In flames music sounds like it could go on some of iced earths something wicked this way come
Dude you know your metal
wonder if thats the "gold top" gibson the producer from the shogun album bet them ..
Holy fuck i forgot about dark trNquility! Thanks matt!
Jake E Lee....is that you? great video.
Melodic death metal is the best.
In Flames we trust
Heaven Shall Burn was sick back then
Please do a video on December flower
Trivium wasn't as loud as the other bands at North Charleston for some odd reason.
Yeeeeeesssssssss
In Jesper we trust
the Rock on guitar
Надо же. Trivium играют in flames
See now why can't more vids be like this instead of the 144p look of Zoom calls ?
Not everyone has a streaming rig like he does.

It's quiet sad if you Google any articles or UA-cam videos of top 10 guitarist, jesper never on the list..
Because he's not a top 10 guitarist.
It's hilarious to think that someone who understands and appreciates this era of In Flames could shit out Trivium lol
Jester race is excellent..in flames are absolute excrement now
