Great interview! I also liked that the interviewer just let Matt talk without interrupting too much, too many interviews talk way too much themselves instead of listening.
Epiphone is beyond fortunate to have this guy and Bjorn Gelotte as their artists, who used the same guitars on stage as the one we can buy anywhere. Mad respect for Matt and his way of thinking regarding signature gear.
Matt is so real. Seriously if there's any musician that people should idolize, it should be him. You can tell he's more than serious about what he does, not because he has a serious personality, but because he loves it and doesn't want to waste it. He's blunt and to the point, but not in a dick kind of way. He's not overconfident and a humble soul.
to be fair, trivium is not my kind of music i do respect what they do, and matt is a really nice and gentle person, he is really a guy i would like to hang around with and have a good talk about music
They definitely are amazingly tight and consistent, but they've definitely been missing some of the spontaneous epic shit that they've done in the past. Also, their tone is a bit robotic and dry because of the Kempers. They should just go back to some legit organic 5150's with the maxon overdrive.
Lionhardt369 I don't know who pays for what in the touring industry, but if the need for more storage for gear while travelling (more renting or probably tour support for gear as well) comes with a deduction to Trivium's income, then they would be insane to go back to amps. It is a little robotic i agree, but it suits their style for live purposes.
I really love Matt's outlook on music and how art should be looked at in general. I hope one day to be able to develop my musical talents to that level and see what I can create.
Funny how emperor and trivium have been some of my favorite musicians for a long time now and little did i know until i saw this that emperor is one of matts favorite bands.
This is a great interview. Interviewer is great, it seems like a genuine fluid conversation instead of awkwardness reading from a list waiting for queues. Also interesting questions, stuff I actually want to know about. Matt is a great too, down to earth dude.
Discussing the right hand picking and left hand positioning is excellent in this video. And wow, having John P showing him how to do it....man, what a privilege. As always, Mitch, great interview.
He's really awesome I actually have one of his white snowfall signature Epiphone guitar. Real thing of beauty and a deadly weapon. The riffs on it are quite insane too.
Great interview and really interesting to hear Matt talk through the technical side of his playing. Cool to see his picking style variations for each technique
that was awesome.. matt is sick wit it and very well spoken.. i wish i could have found loyal musicians with that much dedication.i also love all marshall arts so i'd be down to practice ju jitsu every chance i got..sweetwater rules....metal
After listening to this amazing interview & hearing Matt echo alot of the same thoughts & feelings regarding the disgrace that is manufactured pop music that I have, I am now a fan of Matt Heafy THE PERSON, and will definitely check out Trivium's music with a fresh ear. I will admit, being an old school metalhead more in the mold of Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, I didn't give his band a fair listen before writing them off as just another cookie-cutter metalcore band... I was wrong & do apologize.
I recently had my Spotify playlist playing and didn't realize that it ended and when it does... it will play similar bands to the ones that are on the playlist. A song came on and I was driving at the time and was kind of just jamming with it not even realizing that it was Trivium. I will say, I never gave them a chance before either. They came out around the time of bands like Bullet for My Valentine and I wrote them off as I was in the midst of getting into tech and death metal. After hearing that song in my car, I went back and listened to Trivium's latest album, and while some of the parts are still not necessarily my thing, I gotta say I enjoyed it more than I thought. I also watched some of Matt's videos on his UA-cam channel and he is just a stand up guy and a heck of a guitar player.
Try their Shogun, and The Crusade albums. Very good albums for an old school metal dude to ease yourself into Trivium. The Crusade album drops 95% of his iconic scream to a more traditional metal orientation. But of the two Shogun is my favorite due to its fantastic musicianship. The album In Waves is also badass.
Thank you for this awesome interview! Very observant interviewer :-) And very passionate interviewee :-) By the way, Steve Smyth taught me to pick at an angle, like cutting into the string. It gives increased control at higher speed (the string never gets 'trapped') and more even attack instead of duds mixed with aggressive pops.
Surprised to see his signature Epiphone Les Paul Custom doesn't have any binding on the back - One of the few things that sets it apart from Les Paul Standards.
Having mixed extended range guitars, I've found that even a 9-string doesn't necessarily interfere with the bass (certainly not when they're in unison). The tone of the bottom strings comes 99% from harmonics, not the fundamental.
Why is the nut white on his guitar ? The majority of production models have a black nut ! But I have seen some including mine with a white nut ! I wonder if it depends on the year of manufacture? His Gibson Les Paul Custom that this signature Is modeled from has a white nut .
Yeah that was said well by Matt, other people "like" a certain type of music or genre, but if you are a real metal head then it's like you are a part of something , it's not just a type of music that you like 😂😂😂😂😂you also like doing stuff like wearing black and it never changes .....I'm 45 now and recently realized that I'll never change and I found that strange cause I always thought that as I get older I would grow out of metal and death metal but it just keeps growing
They use a Kemper profiling amp, kinda boring. It's a custom tone done by Colin Richardson. Basically a 5150 running into a Maxon Overdrive pedal. You can find some general stuff about the settings online, like they scoop their mids a bit. The thing about trivium is that all 3 instruments kind of blend together well, but separately they don't sound AS great.
Great interview! I also liked that the interviewer just let Matt talk without interrupting too much, too many interviews talk way too much themselves instead of listening.
There's nothing more inspiring to me than a musician talking passionately about the art of music.
Matt is a great player and really cool person. Trivium puts on a great show.
Epiphone is beyond fortunate to have this guy and Bjorn Gelotte as their artists, who used the same guitars on stage as the one we can buy anywhere.
Mad respect for Matt and his way of thinking regarding signature gear.
Don't forget Robb Flynn from Machine head
..and of course Jeff Waters, who plays extensively his red Epi Annihilator V.
It´s like matt being interviewed by old Corey....
Mitch Gallagher does a fantastic job interviewing people. He asks great questions and does his homework on every player he sits down with.
14:08 love how for Matt this was his downpicking go-to riff to practice, while mine was actually Like light to the flies! Matt is such a legend.
Sweetwater's always got the best guitarist interviews.
These interviews are sooo good.
The ascendancy riff!!! Awesome!!!
to be fair, trivium is not my kind of music i do respect what they do, and matt is a really nice and gentle person, he is really a guy i would like to hang around with and have a good talk about music
Never got into this band but after hearing him talk so passionately I think I'm gonna give it another chance
emilio olivas I actually like their newer stuff more. It’s al great but I really dig their newer stuff. Great great band
@@ambrooks5 Shogun and Ascendancy are both awesome albums!
Best Interview I've Ever Seen Matt Is The Man!
Thanks for posting this, great interview congrats. Great people right here !
seriously an amazing interview. thank you for asking legitimate questions
I really enjoy seeing big artists with epi custom guitars
doesnt brendan small use an epiphone explorer?
+Probosquadhenry Thunderhorse explorer was a Gibson first.
Matt is truly passionate about music, Trivium, and metal.
Metal is music
18:47 I totally thought he was gonna play the last solo in Four Horsemen
The amount of passion and effort that matt puts into being the best he possibly can is insane!
finally good to have such a great in detail interview about matt and trivium
This is one of the most interesting music interviews I've ever heard. Thanks and kudos to both Matt and Mitch!
I love watching all things Mat Heafy. He seems like such an incredible guy to hang out with.
This guy is an excellent interviewer. He asks great questions.
I'm not a fan of his band (just not my thing), but I've always had massive respect for Matt. Just seems like a genuinely good dude.
Matt's spot on about their live rigs nowadays. They sound Godlike on stage
They definitely are amazingly tight and consistent, but they've definitely been missing some of the spontaneous epic shit that they've done in the past. Also, their tone is a bit robotic and dry because of the Kempers. They should just go back to some legit organic 5150's with the maxon overdrive.

Matt is such a cool, level-headed guy. Definitely a good interview.
His comments on metal being a lifestyle and discipline are spot on.
Fantastic interview Mitch. Right out of the top of the pile that one, well done.
Great interview! I am 9 years late... Trivium is an excellent band!
Am I the only one who thinks Matt looks like Joseph Gordon Levitts brother?
if you follow his twitter, he always said Joseph Gordon L is his doppelganger LOL
lol Ive thought the same thing for the last 10 years
Yep
He's like a Japanese version of JGL
Whoa
im not a trivium fan but at least i respect matt, hes a real guy!
He's really awesome I actually have one of his white snowfall signature Epiphone guitar. Real thing of beauty and a deadly weapon. The riffs on it are quite insane too.
One of the best interviews on youtube! And i am not a huge Trivium fan
Speaking as another non-huge fan, I totally agree. What a great interview. Matt seems as cool as they come.
Great interview, Mitch!
Well done Sweetwater! What a fantastic and quality interview.
Great playing! Awesome interview!
What an awesome interview. Interviewer let’s Matt talk. But He’s clearly very knowledgeable so it brings new subjects. Super great interview
Great interview and really interesting to hear Matt talk through the technical side of his playing. Cool to see his picking style variations for each technique
Matt Heafy is awesome definitely one of the worlds greatest guitarists & singers on earth
the best interview ever, good job
Excellent Interview! I know this is from a few years ago, but the new Trivium record is on fire!

Love these interviews.
that was awesome.. matt is sick wit it and very well spoken.. i wish i could have found loyal musicians with that much dedication.i also love all marshall arts so i'd be down to practice ju jitsu every chance i got..sweetwater rules....metal
This is a perfect interview.
This was a great interview! Thanks for posting it.
Awesome interview. You rock Matt! Trivium is the best!!!!

Nice, very good interview.
Awesome interview! really enjoyed it! \m/
Rex Ryan interviews Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Thank you for this awesome interview! Very observant interviewer :-) And very passionate interviewee :-)
By the way, Steve Smyth taught me to pick at an angle, like cutting into the string. It gives increased control at higher speed (the string never gets 'trapped') and more even attack instead of duds mixed with aggressive pops.
Great interview. Interviewer asks great questions. Pretty sure he is a guitarplayer himself. Keep it up.
Shoutout to the Behemoth shirt! Great interview too, love Trivium
Surprised to see his signature Epiphone Les Paul Custom doesn't have any binding on the back - One of the few things that sets it apart from Les Paul Standards.
This is fucking awesome -- Matt gets into picking techniques and everything...Even thumb position -- This is so great, thank you for this.
Mitch is so observant..thats a skill in itself :)
Matt Heafy Is an awesome Guitarist & Trivium is one Of the Worlds Greatest Bands
what a cool guy.
11:29

Hey we opened for after the burial at Memento Mori's Toni's house o love!!
Greetings thanks for the lessons
love you matt
Damn! He played a Krisiun song! That was a fun little surprise.
Behemoth shirt!
Having mixed extended range guitars, I've found that even a 9-string doesn't necessarily interfere with the bass (certainly not when they're in unison). The tone of the bottom strings comes 99% from harmonics, not the fundamental.
so disciplined
woah, the little detail of the thumb, that man is so perceptive, even Matt didn't noticed that
He has on a Behemoth shirt! Hail!!
5 years late to the party, but great interview!
Nice Behemoth T
Matt is such a beautiful human #nohomo
Stock MKH is a black nut. Ivory looks so much nicer!
Rockin the epiphone nice.
I think it's really cool. He even uses them live, for most if not all of Trivium's Bloodstock set he used his Epi signatures.
i was wonderin why i love trivium but cant find another metal band where i like the vocals. i guess he answeared that here
Super !
I have this guitar. Solid built axe
He shreds in the beginning
He’s got some gr8 posture
18:48 sounds like the four horsemen solo
He's such a stud.
Matt is a really cool guy :-)
What is the black metal group and song he mentioned at 13:40 ?
JhnOne Krisiun - Aborticide
does the signiture guitar have a left handed model
He was a lead singer of a metal band and was 12?
Why is the nut white on his guitar ? The majority of production models have a black nut ! But I have seen some including mine with a white nut ! I wonder if it depends on the year of manufacture? His Gibson Les Paul Custom that this signature
Is modeled from has a white nut .
22:15 sounds like Periphery's live show these days.
Do Sweetwater ship worldwide?
At 14:21 I wrote the same little lead thing
Artie Lange gives such an epic interview.
anyone have a link to a profile of Trivium's rig??
They use a Kemper profiling amp, kinda boring. It's a custom tone done by Colin Richardson. Basically a 5150 running into a Maxon Overdrive pedal. an interviewer that researches and actually asks interesting questions. is this real life?
