I mean, metalcore in the 00's used to draw a lot from melodeath. (In the 90's it was closer to hardcore punk, and in the last 5-10 years it's been starting to incorporate more and more Meshuggah influences, as well as post-rock elements and even some nu metal) There's even this joke/stereotype that all metalcore bands from that era almost literally ripped off Slaughter of the Soul.
I remember seeing Niclas' original band Engel supporting Children of Bodom on their Are You Dead Yet? tour. I have Engel's original demo that they gave out for free on that tour. One of the best live performances I've ever seen. 'Casket Closing' by Engel is still an absolute banger.

Niclas Engelin & JB Brubaker have the most unique picking styles I’ve ever seen
I saw Niclas play with In Flames in 2013, his live energy and charisma was crazy. His other band Engel has some great riffs too.
