Once took shelter in the firebox of one of the locomotives at IRM in Union Ill. during a tornado. It blew one of the doors off barn 3 and left it 10 miles away in Woodstock. Tornadoes are nothing to mess with, stay safe. Great composite video, thanks!
@@iatif1995 It was LS&I #34 which is now Western Maryland #734. The locomotive hadn't had a fire in it in years and my friend and I were covered in cinders and soot.
Having been through a few including the Gaylord tornado, those sirens are frightening. JT: Tornado's coming.....but there's a train followed by storm chasing. Awsome!
We still use our fire sirens here to activate our VFDs in addition to radio dispatch. We have 2 sets of siren cycles. High-low cycling is for a fire dispatch, and the siren pitch rising and staying at high pitch is our weather alert siren.
Cool! I wish they still used them for fire runs in my area. It adds excitement when you’re at the station and a call comes in. I use to be able to hear several departments from my yard.
@@JawTooth When I was young, every FD’s siren sounded every day at noon. Now they get tested once/month, and a handful of our sirens blow at noon only on Saturday.
The old neighborhood I used to work in had a volunteer fire station next door with an old one horsepower motor driven federal siren. I was back in a neighborhood and they had a ridiculous electronic siren that also had a voice announcement as well as a commercial giving the name of the company that produced a siren.
Where I live on the Oregon Coast, we used to have a noon siren (called a noon whistle), and the siren would go off for the fire department. Now they dispatch on the radio only. The only sirens we have are the tsunami sirens, and most of them don't work.
Hello from the UK. Brilliant - that old little locomotive 2414 is back. I don't think that we have seen this one for a while. In fact it was being moth balled in the sidings last time I saw it and thought that the new shiny red locomotives were there to replace it!
we've had tornado warnings and small one hit in our area as well, tis that time of the season... stay safe out there, loved seeing that type of engine. thanks always
That’s dedication waiting for a train and tornado sirens going off. And when tornados sound like a train you could get a double wammy. A train and a tornado. Video of the year.
I have vague memories of it but my Mom, brother and sister and myself were in the one in 73. We were coming back from Woolco when my mom lost control of the car and ran off the road. We ended up staying the night at Mr Rodman's. A family friend and local pharmacist. I remember being amazed at their house because it was big old farm house. That's terrible about the police officers. My prayers go out to the families. Another great video JT!!
Always good to.see the switcher out on.the.road. Wow the Coe Metal.car fleet grows. Be careful these storms can turn in.a minute. Im sure the dogs would be howling up a storm.
Prestonsburg is a beautiful town. I thoroughly enjoy watching the coal trains anytime I'm down in the mountains. My family hails from Jenkins, not too much father down the country music highway. Thanks for the live action son!
Thanks for sharing JT! This was neat to see and hear since I am also a weather fan along with loving trains. That sky did not look that ominous for a tornado warning but the sirens were sounded for a reason, of course! That one track (of the two) at that neighborhood crossing curled around and looked like it was no longer being used with all the weeds on it. You were MUCH braver than me to drive into that storm on that two-lane highway. Glad you were ok.

If you see light green or light blue (cyan), you definitely want to take cover. This isn't always tornadic but instead means lots of hail and some of that can be really huge. While out on storm chasing trips, I saw baseball and larger hail while down in Texas. Some of the hail took out our windshield and damaged roofs and other vehicles. The hail was so thick that the town we were in took out their road graders to clear the roads like we take out or snowplows to clear the snow and slush in the winter.
