I'm not sure Canon is worst at motion pictures. There are a lot of options of autofocus at menu. Did you select the option (focus first+motion second)? Are the glasses equal at this point?
Is the Canon 6D good for weddings? I am trying to get more into weddings and my current camera is a Rebel T5i. It does good pics but shows a lot of noise in low light situations. I want to get a nice full size with a low cost.
Yes, keep in mind the 6D is better than the 5D Mark ii and the 5D Mark ii was a huge wedding camera. It still is. There are plenty of people still shooting with it. The 6D is like a 5d Mark ii PLUS, not quite a 5D Mark iii with the focus system but better than the 5D Mark ii's focusing system.
Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 SP Di VC USD vc is this a match for NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II or does Tamron have a better one that closer match???
ive been reading lots of complaints about bad moire and aliasing on the 6D during video. how do these compare on that front? and in your opinion is the 6D any worse for video than the 5D mark 2?
Matt,
What specific lenses were you using on the 2 cameras?
Were you in shutter priority mode?
What focussing mode did you use for tracking?
Please advise
Thanks
Bob
are you sure the settings are the same for both cameras? to me the shutter speed seems to be set lower on the canon. the background and the hand on the model looks like it's moving. (at video clip 5:40)
Hi
Thanks for this review. I see this video has been uploaded in 2012. Nowadays, it is rumored that CANON will be releasing 6D-MKII. Do you think it is worth waiting? What is your opinion about it?
Thanks
Depends on whether the cost is worth it to you. You can get a used 6D really cheap now. You can resell it later and you won't lose a lot. :-)
She is running far away from Camera while taking shots from Nikon. Allowing to focus better.
She is running so close to camera while shooting form Canon. Hence giving bad focus.
Isn't it a little unfair?
No, Canon sucks ass
hahahah.. Okay. Thanks.. Just wanted to make sure :)
Syed Armaghan Hassan I was just about to type that lol
i was thinking about that
Syed Armaghan Hassan which cam is Gud?
I don't know but the model was much closer to him during while running from one side to the other while shooting with the Canon in comparison to when he shot with the Nikon. I wonder if that had made a difference as to how many clean shot he could have got on the Canon. Nevertheless it is obvious the Nikon is going to have a superior AF. I just though that maybe the Canon could have done a little better.
Ah i will upgrade to D600 from D3100 too some day. I wanted to ask you how is the autofocus? Is it much faster than D3100? Do you find few stops of ISO a big advantage? :)
hey could you tell me which one is better for video? which of these is better in low light mode?
hi i have just started bird photography..i want to buy a new camera?? i have a 7d.i am confused between d600 and d800.are they good for bird photography? 90% is d600 as fps is okay with 5.5fps. it's not bad.what do you suggest.should i stick to 7d only or d600 is a good opition for me.
6D Would be my choice. And I'm actually saving up for it and 50mm Sigma ART lens.
max quality
Is the 6D better for video, and if so in which ways? Which would you choose for portrait photography?
you think you'll still get the same results if you used a comparable lens for your test? for nikon you seemed to be using a fixed aperture lens (more expensive) vs a canon zoom w/ variable lens (cheaper).
I just got a canon 6d after initially ordering the d600. I cancelled d600 order when I found out you cannot adjust the aperture while in video mode. I liked that the d600 had a headphone jack and 2 card slots but the aperture thing killed it for me. I use my 6d for video only and I am very happy with it. As a video guy I do everything in full manual so auto focus and af points do not weigh on my opinion for the camera. Thanks for the informative review.
I use the pop up flash all the time on my D600- use with a diffuser for remote flash with Nikon CLS system - D600 in Commander mode for full control .
Good day Sir nice meeting you. please how can I use Canon 5d mark iii to snap different 4 person and all of them will be Sharp. or how can set it to give me a better result.
hi! Great test! a question. wich camera dose better for sport photography? traking?
regards!
I agree. The 6D is a low light monster. I'm sure the D600 is a fine camera, but I shoot in the Canon system. I'd love to have the 5DIII, but they haven't made selling organs legal in the US yet.
But time machine works well. Several moments and 9 years passes which means you can buy 5Dmlll for far less than 1000 bucks :)))
I am really leaning towards the D600 but people keep saying how it has dust/oil problems on the sensor. Any thoughts?
I admit i am more a Canon Guy .. but between this two i would choose the Nikon, its just aimed for better Pictures.
But anyway i will stuck to Canon, and my question would be how is the 6D comparing to the 5DMark II ( and Mark III).
Until now i am using a 60D and i really want to step up and i am thinking about a used or new 5dII or the new 6D.
Did u actually test the sync speed if is really 180 or maybe lower/highter. On the 60D its 250 but most the time i have to use 200 anyway
Is it true that Nikon Processes more in the camera the Canon. Meaning post processes the image before it gets to you like fix Brocken pixels. Reason I'm asking is I would like a nice camera for day and also astrophotography. I'm in between these two.
Dxomark says that the d600 is better in low light than the canon ? is it true really want to upgrade from my d3100 because of the noise performance!!
Shows you how over priced Canon stuff is versus what you get. Specs go a long way when it comes down to bang for buck. Sure you can go out and buy another recorder and all those canon comments for the lacks of simple things that the Nikon has but why pay for a Canon when you can get more with a Nikon? Plus Nikons focus better and the glass is incredible.
which is better( canon 6d or nikon d610) for portrait & weeding I need to help I am confused ....
I personally choose the 6d. It handle nice high iso performance and better on video quality. But if you need that the 2 sd card, you occasionaly underexpose your image, go with d610. And if you plan to upgrade the body later get the nikon. Since d750, d810 and d850 is superb and fairly better price on used item now, i personally choose d750 if i have more budget. In my country used d750 only $333 more expensive then used d610.
Hi guys, Im Just Here to ask For suggestions, I am planning to buy a Dslr camera for my Graduation gift and im Finding it hard To choose between Nikon and Canon? Can You Suggest Me Which one Is Better for a Begginer Like me? and What Model? :) I'll be fully Glad To hear Your replies :)
The better is the one you like more ;) Go to a shop, try them both and you will get your answer.
as you may know DSLR's aren't cheap but you can get a canon 100d to learn the basics!
Canon is good
very nice video! =)
got a question for you if you dont mind:
I have used my Olympus E-500 for the last 6~ years, and am after a nice improvement.
so too my question!
wich camera would you surguest to an hobbyist photographer the nikon d7100 or the d600?
thanks for your time! :)
please check out on MOTION6D Chanel about high ISO comparison between.
under title: Canon 6D vs Nikon D600 vs 5D Mark III Hands-On
Great video as always, thank you. I'd love to see a low light iso and low light focus test as I have heard conflicting reports on both cameras. I'm a Nikon shooter and my neighbor has just purchased the 6d, i have to say its a very impressive piece of kit!
Hi, Did you notice the dust problem of the D600? I am really waiting to buy this goody. But the dust just...
Great wrap up at minute 8!
-WB is going to jump if you leave it in auto and background colors change. Thats what being in auto means.
-AF. What AF mode were you in. Yes it's going to be blurry if the subject leaves the center of the frame if you choose the wrong AF mode.
-AF tracking again. Time 5:00 had her running close to the camera, 7:00 (Nikon) she ran much further away. This makes ALL the difference.
-Focus up close. What was the minimum focus range? I know the pic at 6:13 was within it.
I am usually a canon guy,i love the canon setup, and pretty much everything about them, but that is probably just because i am used to canon, and i feel lost when i am going to change fancy settings on a nikon. For the 6d and d600 i feel like canon is holding a bit back, espesially with frame rate and focus points. They sort of cheap down on everything else. if i was to choose between theese, it would have been the d600, but in the real life i would have gotten a 5d II used, because i like canon
excuse me If I am considering portraiture photography which camera do you think should I buy??
What IOS did you use when shooting? For Canon and Nikon?
Noise performance 6D is almost 2 stop better in high ISO, more accurate color and better JPEG performance and videos (noise and detail). Canon dynamic JPEG file size is way better than NIKON that tends to keep the JPEG at the same file size and loose some detail. D600 autofocus is better but only about 20% in real situation in bright light. In low light dusk/down Canon do better tracking with telephoto lenses.
lol what? Nikon has 1 1/2 stops more DR than Canon, same with video, plus it's sharper
who shoots in JPEG? Noobs do.
you said nikon loose of the detail? canon did.... rendering all of noise n i think .. i dont know, i dont like canon in detail... 100%size... same condition for both! about color we can do much more in photoshop but how about detail? but i do agree... this video doesnt good in compare... like any other else saying,
I think people downplay the importance of 100% viewfinder, and 2sd card slots. That alone should render the Canon a non-consideration. The inability to frame correctly in the eyepiece cannot be understated. I had said that I would give up film when 3 things happened: 24MP Fullframe since I think that's what top of the line 35mm film is equivalent to, 100% viewfinder, because getting an extra quarter inch in all your pics is annoying, and 2SD cards. They happened on the D600.
hello i just wanna ask which is better canon 600d or nikon d5200?? please let me know..
What would you use WiFi and GPS for? I know you can control with WiFi but the GPS?
To geo-tag the photos
+AndreCorner geo-tagging photos. The only use of it that I can think of at the top of my head is for landscape photographers to be able to locate their spot.
Hydrokat yeah I got a reply but thanks anyway. I also thought about that but I still find it kinda useless, I mean photographers that are into landscape for real know exactly where they're going and why, and they often have other devices to record that anyway...not to mention that EXIF are editable so you can check the coordinates on your smartphone and geo-tag them later right?
Again, I may be missing something but I really don't see the point of the gps in a camera.
AndreCorner Perhaps it's more of a convenience of not editing the metadata later.
I own a 6d but have never used the wifi and GPS feature. A few searches on google might land us on someone who has a better perspective than what we have though.
Hydrokat yeah I red some posts that supported this but well, I'm not saying it's useless but like you it's something I wouldn't use if I had it.
hear is the Video with the ISO comparison ( Canon EOS 6D vs Nikon D600 ) it is a Digital Rev video, and it's at around 11:04 where he shows the high ISO test, the Canons high ISO performance is really good
Wow! Nikon's quality is Great, no he is not paid by Nikon, i disagreed with persons who said he's paid
Good review. In my opinion (I've got to use both cameras), I like the 6D better. The 6D is more ergonomic to me and the button layout just makes more sense. I don't really care for flash, the 6D takes great shots without the need for it, plus I have a speedlite if I really really need flash. The 6D is targeted for portrait and landscape shots, not sports...which is what I shoot. Also, because I travel a lot, I love the ability to use GPS and wifi.
How about some low light tests of both cameras? Everybody who compares them is nitpicking Canon's lack of AF points but I haven't heard anything about it being able to focus down to -3EV. That's an important factor to keep in mind when comparing the two.
Not in digital, though. The cost of a sensor isn't linear with size, it's exponential, due to the whole "squaring the circle" issue, a little bit (silicon wafers are circular), but mostly due to defect density. Basically, for every wafer made, some chips will hit a part of the material that's defective. As you increase the size of the chip, you both have fewer chips for the same wafer cost, and the chance of any given chip having a defect is higher. Things get better here, but very slowly.
You have one mistake in your video, the Nikon D600 only syncs up to 1/200th of a second. The D800 goes up to 2/250th.
Regarding the dust issue everyone's talking about. I was very nervous about it too, but I got a refurbed from B&H and the tiny amount of dust that has been visible in the f11 range is easily blown away. Not an issue at all in my book.
I agree with you. But I read that on the set of Dexter they used the D800 and just recorded to SD cards for video. The thing is if you use a camera below broadcast you need to get that camera approved by someone high up like the producer or the director to give the okay of cameras that are not on the list.
There is a cameraman for the BBC he uses a Panasonic AF100 and a GH2. The AF100 is on the list of cameras to use but GH2 not. But 20% of BBC footage can be from a camera not on the list.
D600 much more appealing imho. Great video Mat!
He did a fair review and gave pros/cons for both, didn't even declare a winner, yet Canon users still waved their "you hurt my feelings" card. I'm not fond of the Canon, but then Nikon never robustly addressed the oil on sensor issue with the D600, so I'll pass on both for now.
Had i not invested in my lenses i would jump ship to Nikon but since i can't... Can you do a similar review like this with 5Dii and the 6D. would appreciate it that much! and with your model too of course! Cheers Matt!
Hi Mate, Terrific review of the 6D and D600. Best review yet, personally. I am looking to upgrade from my 450D, and am exactly at the point of not deciding whether to go Nikon or stay with Canon.
As I am looking at it from a landscape and macro photography POV, I think I will stay with the Canon. I worked out whilst in Africa recently that if it moves, I can't shoot it! :(
Sorry if this is a silly comment but at the focus test where she runs from side to side, there is quite a big difference in where she actually runs. I bet Nikon does focus better but the Canon had a tougher job since it had to choose between her and background while Nikon had her so close to the background it would not really matter where it focused. Running straight toward the camera, Nikon seemed waaay better though (suspect focus system is male while Canon is more interested in architecture)
I'm a Nikon shooter but for most of us canon is still the way to go for video. The D800 only records at a woeful 24Mbps, you need to use an external recorder on the HDMI out for broadcast work. You also need to add a VAF antialiasing filter to fix the moire in video. I suspect the fact you can use the HDMI out factored in the decision to use it, but a firmware update will give the same to the canon at which point there is NO advantage using it over the 5DMKIII.
I don't know about Dxo Mark report, but everywhere even Kai form Digital Rev, said Canon 6d is better than D600 in high ISO performance
Matt how long does it take you to film and edit a review? I really like your reviews you cover the tech specs really well.
Thanks for the review. Good one, except that I missed any mention of dynamic range and low light performance. Woould be interesting to know how they compare in that regard.
I totally agree. Just call it a Full-frame and Crop-sensor respectively. We obviously have a Nikon user here.
Appreciate you for coming up with this comparison video. But not sure what your shutter speeds were for her freezing her running. She was not blurred due to out of focus.
Steven, I agree with you, Nikon D600 is more complete camera, but there are a lot of complain about dust or oil on sensor. If I want to buy Nikon D600, I probably have to wait until Nikon straight it out.
"it was tracking her chest-skin area"
The dude was using the camera to check her out >.>
LOL ...
Thank you once again for the good informative review. Spec wise Nikon appears to be the choice for me. However, I got cold hearted when went to the shop and took some sample photos, of the white wall, just to see the discussed oil spots at the left bottom corner. I wish Nikon solves the issue soon.
Sorry, I may have worded it incorrectly, I know Nikon can but not sure of the Canon. A major reason for going Nikon, I went with a D300, have had it for about 2 years.
Thanks for the reply.
Maybe because it comes with it, whereas Canon forces you to buy it as an extra accessory... as they do with every part in their camera range. No lcd screen protection, no hood for the lenses, no flash, no adapters... I wonder how they still sell their cameras with the strap! Ah, the advertising on it, got it :-)
Whatever, both are superb cameras. The choice is really on the photographer's needs (2 cards, onboard flash, better video...).
Wonderful review again, man. And model as well!
can i use 6d in india wedding shoot. ?
any auto focus problem?
The D600 is rated as better in low-light/high iso by both DPReview and DXO. Not sure where you're getting your information from.
Still trying to decide twix 6D and D600. Really don't like Nikon's non-response to the well documented sensor contamination problem.
Apparently you have to lower the 6D from your eye and fiddle around in the menus to change your ISO so the Canon is not without issues.
Nikon, in my observation, performs better in many ways. Canon blew everything on auto WB, though skin tone still goes in favor of Canon.
Just want to point out that Canon is the way to go for video if you plan to make a movie. The codec is very high that broadcast TV stations need. That said the Nikon D800 is being used on Dexter and the Nikon D800 has a bitrate that is below broadcast. So times you can get the okay to use some cameras of video like the Nikon D800 is the producer gives it the green light.
are you in AI-servo for canon? From what I know, canon is very good at AI-servo. Almost anything moving in the foreground would be focus based on their algorithm used. AI-servo, coupled with highspeed burst is very good for sports.
For Bird photography I think you're better off with a crop sensor for that extra reach, and a fast FPS. So I think you're good with the 7D.
Dxo mark came out for the sensor for both cameras. Nikon is the better camera for ISO capability, but it looks close regardless.
Cool! Where was the picture taken?
Im surprised how there is no single shot in focus when she is running towards the canon camera. Did camera ever focus on her ?
If you know anything about shutter speed, you'll recognize how bogus this review is. The tracking test on the Canon was shot intentionally with a slow shutter speed to make it look out of focus. Whereas the Nikon was shot at a proper shutter speed for the test. Disappointing.
That doesn't change the fact that she's out of focus. That's not motion blur.
So, you think having motion blur on an image you're looking at to determine proper focus isn't a problem? Ok, then why didn't he have the same motion blur for the Nikon shot? He negated that test by not having the same shutter speed on both shots.
+Greg Garner Actually, there was one factor much more unfair than that!! Tina was running much further away from the camera when shooting with the Nikon than the Canon. She was running alongside the low bushes in the background. The Canon shots were all taken about midway between the low bushes and Matt, which makes a hell of a difference to focusing. She is running much, much, much faster relative to the camera when up close.Imagine panning with a car driving by half a mile away then a car driving by fairly close. With the close car you have to accelerate your panning exponentially as the car is passing you.Having said all that - Canon offers 100x better focusing on its entry level cameras these days than that old 6D. I recently took shots at an underwear race (to raise money for charity) and every single shot of people both running straight at me and away from me was in sharp focus. I was using the 760D (T6s) and it was so good that as it was rattling off 5fps, just as one person left the edge of the frame, the camera had already achieved focus on the next person to take a sharp shot of them without missing a beat. Sometimes that meant one shot was of a person 2m from me and the next shot 6-7m from me... all in a 5ps burst continuously.
accurate.
Greg Garner :) that is what i actually saw...video is total in favour of Nikon....
I heard that too, but it is not true. It has to do with the physical construction of the D600 body. It involves a gear (some physical apparatus) that the D800 has but the D600 does not. I wish it were not true because then I would have my headphone jack and 2 SD slots. I suppose it would not be that big of a deal if you have zoom lenses that maintain an aperture all the way thru. I am very happy with the 6D.
Mr. Granger, I find all your videos very entertaining and informative. What lens was used on the Nikon? It looks like the 24-70. Thanks.
The year 2012 was an exceptional year for Nikon. The Nikon 600D is the original idea of changing the market, making the FX accessible to ALL of us. The Canon 6D is only an imitation of this new trend. It's a great invention Nikon: lower prices and, perhaps, make obsolete the market aps-c. Nikon has given us so much and asked us LESS MONEY. Canon continues to give too less, few functions using a dropper, and continues to ask for too much money. The Nikon D600 gives us more and costs less.
If you are comparing two cameras of different manufacturers could you please desist from using the Nikon marketing terms for the chip sizes? So if anybody else wonders: DX = APS-C, FX = Full Format
Pop up flash is really handy for firing external flashes wirelessly... Works really well with cls etc
Are you talking about DigitalRev? In terms of actual review of cameras, I would prefer Matt, Jared or a third party site to show the comparisons. DRtv is mostly for entertainment.
One important thing on Canon is about ISO: You can take pictures under low light, using up 10,000 ISO with better quality!
On 6D, she was running closer.
On D600, she was running farther away from you.
Agree, that's the first thing I noticed and thought "not like-for-like comparison". Also Nikon had a lens hood on as well which I don't know if it would make any difference.
I'm not planning to go to a FF camera soon, but still liked the video to see both of them perform. I'm shoot with Nikon, so I probably won't go to Canon, but you never know. And can I say, Tina makes your videos much better. I especially love her kind of humor and your interaction with her. Keep up the good work!
What are you basing that claim on?
Check out the DxOMark ratings. The 600D was scored at 2980 ISO and the 6D only 2340. Not a huge difference but the Nikon is the clear winner.
why you doing unfair test?
I agree here, but still the point of oiling and dusting remains. That showcases Nikon's heist in releasing the Camera and subsequently forcing Canon to release "something" to stay in the market. However, with 11 focus points and 1 SD card slot (whereas, even APS-C are coming with much better specs), Canon is a just making a hopeless attempt.
go with Nikon D300s with a battery grip, you can go up to around 8-9 FPS and obviously much nicer focus and image colour accuracy, i reckon thats the best way to go for bird photography, how ever the canon 7D wont disappoint either, i just hate the fact that the 7D has only one storage slot.
hope it helps
And did I mention 2.5 stops more dynamic range?? Unless you already have a lot of canon glass, I don't see how this is even a consideration.
Not sure I agree w/ the final comment. It doesn't come down to that stuff at all.
More AF points, especially cross type and better movement tracking push the Nikon out in front by a long shot for me. If I didn't already own... a different full frame option, and wasn't invested in Canon, I'd go w/ the Nikon for sure based on those 2 things alone.
I think he's talking about acquiring focus in near darkness conditions on still/slow moving objects which 6d excels at - better than d600 or 5dmk3
Exactly - actual pictures prove a lot more than laboratory testing.
Also, (I asked on another video) what chance of testing some Sony bodies. Interested to see if the quality of 3rd party lenses from Tamron and Sigma now make Sony a viable alternative.
ISO test for both pleaseeeee :)
Im a canon user but have been using two d600 the last couple of days, i still prefer canon. Seemed like he used slower shutterspeed on the canon shots, thats weird. Pop-up flash isnt really a plus, never used that. The only real minus for the 6D is the headphone jack. I use canon for their lenses and the simplicity of the camera, nikon puts stuff on weird places.
I'm sorry but I think this is an incomplete and maybe a bit biased review. You don't explain where the 6D is better than the D600 (for example high ISO noise, and many other aspects). You based 70% of the review on the focus tracking, which we already knew from specs sheet it was way better on the Nikon.
did you noticed this "famous" dust problem on the D600 ?
Thanks
On UA-cam the Canon shots looked spot on and vibrant (w/ the better bokeh) while the Nikon shots looked a little underexposed and cold. So should we take your word for it?
Honestly, the FX sensor for everyone, is the future. The excuse of the possibility of "crop" with the DX format, it is an urban legend, an urban myth. And maybe in 15 years, all brands will manufacture Medium Format for everyone. Yesterday, the world was changing every 150 years. Today the world changes every 10 years.
I don't remember who had it, but I saw a high ISO test between these two cameras, and the Canon was the clear winner, it might of been Digital Rev I saw it on, i'm surprised that Matt didn't include a test in this comparison, because if you like to shoot at night it might be an important strong point of the Canon, and the wi fi is an under rated really cool feature also, but I don't get why Canon doesn't put pop up flashes and autofocus assist beams on there full frame cameras
what about when the lady is running straight at the camera... seems pretty clear which did a better job. Also, if say the camera were used to take pics of any sporting event or higher speed subject the clearly smaller buffer of the canon(due to one card slot?) would be problematic...
I thought the flash sync speed of the Nikon was 1/200th? I still think it is daft that the D600 doesn't have a separate aperture motor.
