I wondered for the longest time what pixel peepers were talking about. I've seen great photos on way less than 20 megapixels. I almost stood up and applauded when you said, "No one cares." Jeez, think about all the 35mm film photographers doing all that amazing work before we had digital. It's like you said. Those pics are great because I felt something.
I actually love the fact that people think because it is an older camera it is an inferior product. Every time I see one come up on my local market place for a good deal I snatch it up. At this rate I've got at least another 15 years of shooting with a 6d.
Martin's 6D fan club. It's where all the cool kids hang out. I only used it a few times for this, but I took a few possum photos at night and the bloody thing could focus on it when I couldn't properly see it. I was stunned. R.e. that charger I am quite interested now, I like the USB charge I could charge that in the car on the go.
The "Canon color" is definitely a thing. I have owned many cameras from many brands. I have loved many cameras, like my old X-Pro1, E-M5ii, K-5, and D3s. The D3s is arguably my favorite camera ever. It just did so much, so well, and was a joy to use. However, none of the cameras from any of the brands, mirrorless or DSLR, of any sensor size, of any age, seem to predictably look so good and so "right" straight out of camera as my Canon gear. I think another thing that is often overlooked, in terms of technical stuff like dynamic range and high iso performance, etc, is that while Nikon, Pentax, Sony, etc, will have better dynamic range or color depth at base ISO (anything below 400, usually), the Canon files typically hold up better at higher ISO values. Of course, there will be exceptions to this, but it does seem to be the case pretty often.
Indeed, I have been looking at a ton of dynamic range DxOmark measurements, and the other brands usually have superb dynamic range at 100-200ISO, but their advantage is all but gone by ISO400-800, and then at ISO1600 or above Canons (of the same camera generation) are better. I have a suspicion that Canon have optimized their sensors for lower light, and Nikon / Sony / Fuji for super bright light.
Agree with your comments on how awesome the 6D is, especially the colours. I shot a track meet my wife was competing in with the 6D and an inexpensive 85 1.8. The photos looked amazing and her team was thrilled with the results. Just kept it on Servo AI focus, Center point only back button focused. Almost all the shots were in focus at f2. I felt my only limitation was composition since I had to stick to the centre point. 4.5 frames/second was enough to capture the moments, although more would have been nice for events like javelin. I had forgotten how well these old DSLRs tracked action.
I’m a Nikon / Fuji shooter and just picked up 2 mint 6D’s and some L glass! The L glass is so cheap today! And I was immediately shocked how that 11 year old camera or so hold ups very, very well to the latest Nikon! Low light and dynamic range is so close!! I was expecting night and day difference!! Plus there is an undescribable look to the Canon images…colour, tones and almost a paintingly look!! Those gorgeous subtle greens in landscapes!!! Why spends thousands when you can pick up full frame cameras and professional quality L lenses for a few hundred! You’re channel is very refreshing in this modern photo madness world!
There must be reasons why the 6D is THE most widely used camera for astrophotography, even 10 years after its initial release. Quite incredible when you look at the advancements in technology and the capabilities of more modern cameras.
Just purchased my first full frame dslr. Found a 6D with a shutter count of 1608 and snapped it up !!! Since I wear glasses I was having trouble seeing the full frame with the standard eyepiece. Then I found an eyepiece extender which reduces the viewfinder magnification by 30% and extends it away from the camera by about 1/2". What a great little gadget!
I bought a used 6d a few months ago, one came up at a price I couldn’t refuse, also have a Panasonic G9. Both have their strengths. I’m enjoying the 6d and used it for a couple of events. Great colours and look, overall it’s a keeper for me
You're spot on! When I switched from a Canon T2i to a Panasonic G85, I instantly realized how spoiled I was with Canon colors. Fortunately, Olympus cameras have fantastic colors, but I have a 5D classic when I need those special Canon tones.
Great points! I appreciate the points on dynamic range especially. I'm going to pick another 6D today. I had one previously, used it for a year very happily -- much enjoyed the upgrade from an 80D -- and replaced it with a 5D4. Of course, the 5D4 has many more AF points. But you know, after a year of regular use, I found that for safety's sake, I would always use the centre point. I'd focus and recompose, exactly as I had been doing with the 6D. I just hate it when I miss focus, as I don't shoot large barrages of shots as a regular practice. I point carefully and shoot, and expect to get a sharp image. With the 5D4, I found I had my greatest chances of success if I used that centre AF point. Or at least one of the four or five points which are arrayed up the middle from top to bottom (not side to side). I had my 5D4 stolen recently, and if I were rolling in money I'd get another, or an R6--but I'm not, and I'll be very happy with my old friend the 6D. BTW, I can recommend the 6D as an ASTRO camera. I have one now that has been astro-modified at Spencer's Camera in Utah, USA, and it performs spectacularly. And speaking of colors!--The removal of the IR-cut filter that is standard practice in astro modification, MUCH increases the color pouring into the camera from the night sky, especially those gorgeous magenta-pink nebulae in the Milky Way core. But the 6D performs extremely well in astro without any modification. When I had my unmodified 6D, my astro files at high ISO's were about the same quality as those taken with my 5D4, which is also regarded as one of the best astro cameras.
I have a 5D classic that I got at the end of last year. I decided on it based on Martin's videos. I had both 6Dmk1 and 5Dmk1 i mind, and went for the 5D because I had the 20D previously, which I loved very much, and the 5Dc is almost exact replica of the 20D (same buttons, layout, menu, same battery!), but with a full frame sensor. So, with the 5Dc I did not need to get new batteries, new charger... And indeed, it is so much like my beloved 20D, with the difference that the ISO3200 of the 5Dc is as good as the ISO800 of the 20D was - or maybe even better colors, even at that high ISO! In retrospect, I would love to have the low light ability of the 6D, for indoors shooting. For outdoors, daylight, the 5Dc has not just lived up to my expectations but far surpassed it. I used to think that the Leica Q2 was my bucket-list camera, but the 5Dc feels so good, and has such astonishingly REAL looking files that I have been completely cured of my Leica-itis. Martin's advice is absolutely superb, far more practical and beneficial than binging on the marketing channels of the latest $$ gear.
I feel the same way about my 5Dc! Outdoors it is my go-to and I’m wondering if it could be the greatest camera ever made???! Always wanted a Leica m9 but the Canon files are so satisfying and feel finished with no extra work afterwards in Lightroom. I carry mine as a second body to 5dm3 when shooting weddings but loud shutter sound limits when I can use it. Will probably retire it to “private life” soon and swap in a 6D for low light reception duty
I just go myself a 6D and am waiting for its arrival. This is my first venture into full-frame digital. Getting back into the hobby, I've been using for ages a 40D which I got new and was my first digital camera. While the 5D1 is still my dream camera (and my next purchase), I opted to get the 6D first after watching a ton of 6D reviews (including a bunch of yours) and it seemed that for what I wanted full-frame for it made more sense that the 5D1 at the moment. Can't wait!
I bought a used 6D because of your earlier video, and i love it! One of the benefits no one mentions is the silent shutter, it sound really nice and silent. But the drawbacks are that the sensor is actually 0.81% smaller, and the flash sync is only 1/180 of a second, instead of 250 on 1 series. I had 1dsmk2 before (still selling it, actually), and i'd say colours are even better on the 1ds, it's just so big and clunky. The reason i'm selling is actually because i started to use flash a lot, and the integrated grip + flash is just too much to carry around, and i use a vintage lens, and the problem is not so much i don't have live view on the 1ds, but that the mount has an extra pin that detects a genuine ef lens, and if adapter blocks that pin, it gives an error. So i had to slightly unscrew the vintage lens on 1ds before shooting, super annoying.
Hit the nail on the head there Martin. I've got a 5D3 as well, but find myself picking up the 6D all the time - its just so good to hold and is in my bag ALL the time. I got the 5D3 for the AF as I shoot a lot of equine sport (and it is great for that) but I can still use the 6D centre point and get great results. And then there's the look to the images - just wonderful. Super camera.
@@thetoyota86perspective54 5D3 without a doubt. 5D3's are very capable, but football might be pushing it a bit. If you have the budget, maybe something with higher burst rate (FPS) - 1DX are now pretty reasonably priced, weathersealed and built like bricks. Or go Nikon and a D3S..

I picked up a 6D with only a couple thousand shutter actuations and it has been perfect except it kept selecting the left focus point and I had to keep manually bringing it back. Thought it was faulty. I realised a couple of weeks ago my nose is hitting the D pad when I look at the viewfinder because I shoot left eye dominant 😂 other than that I have really loved it.
This is so on point. My 6D is an absolute workhorse, and as you said, it gives you all you need to take good photos. If you can't take decent photos on cameras with this tech then it's not the cameras problem, it's the operator. Another great summary of a solid camera. And in a p.s, I just ordered the Neewer charger. Maybe it's me but here in China the Canon chargers 110v current thing makes them so hit and miss, you can leave one on overnight and wake up to find 10% battery charge. Having a visual % display means a lot, and 3 batteries means 2 in the grip and 1 standby. Cheers fella, top job.
Brilliant video Martin the best photography UA-cam channel by far you say it as it is. I love my 6D I’m just an amateur but it does everything I need I certainly wont be changing.
First time I’ve listened to one of your reviews, what a breath of true air. I’ve been shooting since the 70’s and have all sorts of Canon pro gear. I still get my 6D out to shoot water sports with the 500L f4 II and get fantastic results. It rarely misses the shot with that sensitive central focus spot when tracking surfers which is pretty tricky. I’ll never get rid of it.
Canon 5D3 is my latest purchase. It was ridiculously cheap with 40k shutter count from Park Cameras and is as good for studio as my old D3X whilst being a lot more versatile for neutral light shooting. Unlike Martin, I wasn't in love with the 5D2 colours and I find the mk3 colour easier to work with (personal taste.) I am minded to get a 6D to see if I like it. With all these lovely bargain used DSLRs around, I am very happy to try them out to see if I like them. I have no intention of going mirrorless currently. There's not much wrong with good old DSLRs & the prospect of expensive new super high-tech stuff just doesn't inspire me. Props to Martin - I like his approach of focusing on a camera's user experience and the aesthetic & characteristics of the RAW files - rather than on high tech features and specs.
If I got a job using a camera (not necessarily as a creative photographer) I would get a 5Diii. It's almost as cheap as the 6D but having dual card slots would be vital for clients. The 6D has better ergonomics though. I also have a 7Dii which has ergonomics like a 5D series, and it's so annoying!
hi , infact i have 6D and love it all the way, now planing to buy 5D iii , just to have 2 full frame cameras, in the other hand i have 7D i , and 90D, so by getting 5D iii, balance will be there among them, so what do you think about 5D iii?
@@simonharry9618 I like it. The build of the mk3 is a little more solid feeling and I feel the colour is a little more natural than the colour from the mk2.
you might be surprised but the 6D’s dynamic range is actually superior to 5D3. Well-known photographers like Dustin Abbott actually chose 6D over 5D3 for this reason. With that said, you still got a fantastic camera in 5D3, and I’d love to try one someday!
@@guyfromhelsinki Yes - I've seen quite a few of Martin's reviews. I think it would be fair to say that the 5Diii is NOT a favourite of his . I (on the other hand) am rather liking it. I am also the guy who bought a Nikon D3X in 2019 and loved it - after I'd seen The Angry Photographer saying that it was a terrible camera & no good whatsoever. 🤣
I've had my 6D for about a year, prior to that it belonged to my Uncle who used it as a second shooter body for his wedding work so I already knew what kind of results it was capable of. I've recently paired it with the 100mm f/2.8L and that's me done for the foreseeable as far as kit goes - a flash/trigger/softbox is next on my list but hopefully we'll get some decent light towards the end of the summer so I can get some outdoor work done. Always great to hear from you Martin, hope you've had a good week mate 🙌 Edit: Just remembered that Duracell also do excellent quality LP-E6 replacements, I got 2 for about £25 from their website but the triple charger makes that Neewer set cracking value.
[Shshshshsh… Stop telling people about the 6D classic!… The used price will start to go up!…] Seriously though, it is an excellent camera, I use mine mainly for streetphotography, where the size and weight are of importance for me. I'm always blown away by the image quality when I nail a shot. Recently I've been comparing it with my 6Dmk2, which I also love, but has a slightly different look. I mainly use the mk2 for video, but together, they are like the tag team dynamic duo. Personally I would encourage new users to bypass the 5D Classic, and even the 5D mk2 (which I actually love) for the 6D classic which is the perfect balance between; hardware, software implementation, sensor optical performance, and price. btw, there's no way you would ever need to charge three LP-E6 batteries simultaneously if you have a 6d Classic. I use my 6D every day, and can't even remember the last time I had to charge the battery. I've even shot events on ONE BAR, and gotten away with it!… Props!
Hi Martin! Nice video as always! In part thanks to your helpful videos I recently decided to purchase a used 6D dirty cheap with high usage count. Coming from a 450D, then a 60D and micro four thirds bodies, I am in love with the bigger size, deep grip, central focus point, high iso performance, colors, black and white SOOC JPEG rendering, safety shift function, battery life, wifi function to transfer already available, the great feel of the back rotating dial, big square top LCD and the (very appealing to me) silent shutter sound (which is not actually completely silent anyway). In general I prefer to use my Olympus EM1 Mark 2 micro 4/3 setup for its EVF, absolutely perfect ergonomics and layout, lesser weight, incredible IBIS, AF, advanced functions and awsome Zuiko lenses, but in al fairness I am blown away with what I am getting with just a plain 6D and 50mm f1.8 and for the case of low light or portraits I am finding 6D is just incredible. Color is something a bit personal but, honestly I much prefer the 6D colors to the ones I obtain from my Olympus system. And I am not one disliking the Olympus colors.
I'm going to get one within the next weeks, upgrading from a 1300D, my first full format. I'm really stoked for it and thank you very much to that overview video 👍👍
I got one few days ago, with a battery grip and the 50mm 1.8 stm for $115usd. It was cheap! But it have missing flap rubber doors, the rubber it's separating from the body, the camera have marks and scratches, mushy buttons, and 120.000 shutter actuations. Weird thing it's even in that bad shape the camera works perfectly fine. I hope the shutter don't fail soon, but the replacement is cheap. Now I'm having fun, buying rubber replacement parts from China and watching tutorials to clean and repair the body, i want to make it look as new as possible. For some reason I love buying neglected things and repair it the best possible (bicycles, audio equipment, etc).
Great review. I bought my 6D back in early 2013 and along with the Leica M Monochrom I bought in late 2012 it remains one of my favorite cameras today. There is just something about the files from that camera that bring me back every time I try something newer or supposedly better. The 5DSR also has a place in my kit, but the 6D gets far more use.
Spot on comments, Martin! I've just begun to shoot mostly RAW with my 6D, having previously shot mostly JPEG Standard Picture Style while I was on a learning curve with the 6D. I'm amazed at how good the RAW files look straight out of camera. They only ever need minor adjustments using Apple Photos for iMac. I have no interest in camera reviews anymore, because I can't conceive of a camera that would be better than this, for the reasons you outlined. On the megapixel question, 20 MP is actually more than enough on the full frame 6D. I recently worked on an old portrait of my son which was taken in RAW on a crop sensor 300D with around 6 MP and a 50 mm 1.8 lens. Even working on my 4K monitor, the image looked great! Maybe (just maybe!) slightly more resolution would have helped for a landscape shot, but my understanding is that a 4K monitor cannot resolve more detail than is contained in around 8 MP, so it's just cold calculating marketing that is brainwashing consumers into getting locked into an eternal hardware upgrade cycle. If you shoot fast action wildlife or sports then often need to crop in significantly to frame the composition, then maybe the 6D is not the camera for you in terms of fps and sensor resolution, although it is actually surprisingly good. For all other genres, I don't understand why anyone would look elsewhere, especially with that gem of a sensor.
BTW I've purchased the Neewer pack since the original battery had lost capacity, and it has performed well for me for the past month. Much less hassle to have three batteries available. Thanks for the recommendation. @@MartinCastein
love my 6D. Bought it after watching your videos on it. Got a beat up, high shutter count model to see what the fuss was about and love it! Can push the RAW files when I need to and love the high iso performance. The only thing I miss is a flippy screen (my 70d has it) for those low shots.

Your excellent commentary on the 6D led to me ordering what appears to be a nice, low shutter count example today. Despite having a Sony A7III and several lenses I've always wanted to try a Canon DSLR. I actually don't consider it to be that "old" a camera. The MkII version is still a current production DSLR and some reviews even give a slight edge to the image quality of the first version. I'm looking forward to getting back to basics and trying it out. I'm pairing it with the Canon 50mm f1.8 to get started.
I still use the 6d for product images with macro lenses and Mauaul Focus, if I need more megapixels I use focus stacking a lot of the time, it's a gem of a camera.
I used my beloved 6D for two years before it gave out on me (power issue that’d cost more to fix than to buy another) and have been looking to get back into photography with an 5DMkIII as an upgrade for videos, but I have experienced those colors. I remember that feeling with a well lit and colorful scene, it is damn intoxicating. Likely will just end up getting another 6D but with a better lens
I've learned photography on the rebel T2i, and have rocked that for the last 5 years. I shot a concert for a buddy of mine, and I've realized I've finally gotten to the point of maxing out the limits of its abilities. I always look for deals on lenses, and bodies, but yesterday i saw a deal too good to pass up, so i just made the jump to a 6D mk 1, scored it for $150USD. I'm sooo excited, and what little I've played with it so far, it feels like its totally reinvented photography for me, and totally re-lit that spark i felt when i picked up my first DSLR 5 years ago. The dynamic range is night and day difference 🤯😍
I have the 6D (my first camera, thanks to your recommendation), a 5D classic, an essentially free 40D, and now I have a nikon d610 on the way. We'll see how I like the nikon, it was super cheap.
I’ve been shooting since high school(89-92), I started with a canon T50. I took forever to jump to digital. I went from a canon A2 to a canon 50D in 2010 just because diapers were more important at the time and the 5D MkI was way out of my budget. I finally got a 5D MkI, I use it to shoot my daughter’s wrestling events. I was bummed when I started reviewing my pics but thank you for reminding me that this camera was designed to kind of replicate film. I love the grainy look on my pictures.

I have never used a Canon camera of any stature. I have considered picking up a 5D and 50mm f1.8 to play with it some. They can be had for a song now and as you point out, they are still awesome. Thanks for this video. 👍📸
Spot on as always, Martin. I also use third-party batteries in a dual charger. Never an issue. I can set the 6D aside for weeks or months and pick it up and have little difference in the battery level. Just grab and go shoot. I've been wanting to go a little lighter gear-wise these days and sell/trade my Canon gear. I was thinking of the Sony a6700 that just came out. However, the 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8 zooms aren't really much lighter for the Sony. I already have the Sigma MC-11 that runs my Tamron 2.8 zooms like natives on the a5000, 5100, and ZV-E10. So keeping those lenses. I also have a Canon 80D (also solid camera). But... The 6D is just too good a camera. I'm thinking let the 80D go and the Nikon D300 with a few lenses. And keep the 6D and lenses. As you noted, the 6D is light, fits very well in the hand, and is still a rugged camera. I'm not shooting for money and haven't for a good while. I'm thinking I need to stick the 40mm F2.8 STM on the 6D and just work that combo to see where it takes me. I was wanting to go with a lighter kit I can just grab and go with instead of the whole, heavy backpack. Maybe I have just that if I simply shift my approach with what I have. Okay, I do want the a6700, but the 6D just keeps being one amazing bit of kit.
As a hobbyist, some years ago I was about to upgrade from a Canon 500d to a 6D but kind of last minute I changed my mind and got a Fuji XT-20, mainly for its small size. Though I really enjoyed the Fuji lenses and better DR (compared to the 500d) there was something about the colors that just wasn't right for me. Not to say they were bad (though some might argue that the color science in that sensor generation was worse than the previous) but it was just not my thing and even through editing I wasn't getting what I wanted. Four years later I traded in the Fuji for a Canon RP with the RF 50 1.8. I know this is extremely biased but I can say that even from the first couple of shots with it, looking at the colors I had this feeling of returning home. Really enjoy using it and I'm blown away by how good the RF nifty fifty is. The EF version was good stopped down but the RF version is usable (for me) even wide open. Cheers!
Hey Martin : I committed years back to the 6D MII system and built my lens kit around it. I'd be really curious to see your perceptions of it and how it's different from the Mark 1 if you've had a chance to get to know the M2. If you get a chance to make a video about it I'd love to see it.
Apart from film, I am shooting old Fujifilm cameras (X-T1, X100T and X-E3). I love them for the B&W images and their compactness. I am also shooting Pentax K1 ii and Canon 6D (the most recent purchase). These I prefer for their colour output (generally I am not a fan of Fuji's colour pallet and I almost always find I have to tweak it in post to get results I like) and nice, big OVFs.. Although the K1 ii is relatively new, it has not got a great up to date AF system, but that does not matter because I use mostly old and great MF Pentax K primes on it. It's beautifully engineered, built like a tank and really nice to hold in the hand, if a bit heavy. It has great functionality, ergonomics and really useful and easily accessible features built into it. The 6D is a great compromise between the small light Fuji's and the bulky K1ii. The ergonomics and functionality are almost as good as the Pentax's, but it scores with being just a bit smaller, quite a bit lighter and more discrete, has better AF and produces lovely images SOC with the two primes I currently have with it, the 40mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.8 STM ii, which are probably all the lenses I need for it (maybe an 85mm would be handy on occasion).
Spot on! However, to get that Canon color science, you need to shoot in raw. AWD jpeg on my 6D are a color disaster in tungsten light. Another nice thing is it's lightweight. I used my 6D and nifty fifty, while my 5Dsr and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 are more that twice as heavy and stay on the shelf for almost every subject.
You’ve convinced me, I’m in the market for another DSLR (partly because they aren’t making anymore) and just lately I have heard nothing but good about the 6D, I am sold on it and will get one. I was thinking about the 7Dmk2 but a lot of the features, “upgrades” on it are irrelevant to me and my photography. I have always used APS-C, apart from 35mm film and my Lumix LX100, (I often joke that I always shoot full frame, as I don’t crop my images, I love the discipline of getting it right when framing and I want to use everything the sensor has to offer) 20mp on a full frame sensor sounds like low light heaven to me, I only ever use the centre focus point anyway. My first DSLR was a 6.3mp Canon 10D and the A3 prints from it were beautiful! Then a 30D, I used a 40D for years, then a 7D. I will keep my 7D and still use it because it’s a quality image making tool. All things considered it makes perfect sense for me to get the 6D as another body. I try not to get too bogged down in technical stuff, I know how to get the best from a camera, everything else is art, but I appreciate and enjoy channels like you who tell it like it is. One of the many reasons that I’m not interested in the new Canon mirrorless jobs is that a DSLR is simple in comparison, I don’t want to go through 600 menus when I can just get the settings I want with a click and a turn! And why would I want to pay a lot more money for a mirrorless system when it’s not going to benefit me in any way, shape or form? I prefer the look feel and handling of a DSLR. Someone could go out and buy the most expensive, latest, camera it’s possible to buy, it wont/cant give you great images…only the person behind the camera can do that!
I sometimes think that camera manufacturers push the 'more is better' argument to help sell their latest models. More focus points, more frames per second, more megapixels. I've been a fan of the 6D for a long time (I bought a one new in 2012, which I still use) and it's specs have always met my needs. For example, I don't need 20 fps - I rarely use the 5fps the 6D offers. Short of using a film camera. the 6D is the closest I have found to getting back to traditional hands on photography. And while I know the single SD card slot is a risk (though I've never had a failure) - film cameras only held one roll of film - so that came with its risks too.
Martin, thanks for your great and timely video. I have been eying to buy a 6d for some time now. And I purchased a well use one on mbp last week. I have been shooting with the 5d classic for over a year now. And I want some better low light performance. Actually at a friend's birthday party I shot photos with a borrowed 6d and the 24-105, 4.0. I thought ergonomic wise the camera felt a little bit too small in my hands compared to my old Nikon d200. But time will tell. Once I receive the camera, I will slap on a 40mm, 2.8 and report back...
Yes report back, the 6d feels a bit small I agree, but if you try mirrorless then they feel smaller and then going back to the 6d feels like a good compromise all round
Completely agree on the bit about Canon colour science. I had a 5D mk1 but sold it because I mainly use a Fuji XT3. I find myself playing with the Fuji JPEG settings or editing the RAW files to look like the output of my 5D SOOC.
I have worked with a lot of cameras, even Nikon...wel, most of the 5D's, exept for the "Classic". And some more expensive brands. I used to live off of portrait photo. I always just use the center focus point and recompose anyway. I now live with my beloved 6D, a 5D MK2, a 70D and the first EOS-M. And i love it!! :) About focusing and recomposing. I have heard "skilled" photograpers say "ok, recomposing is ok, but you can only lock the focus, not the ligth messuring". To those I will only say....if you look faaar up on the rigth backside of your Canon DSLR, rigth belov the top LCD....there's a button with a little "star" abowe it. Lock the focus, press (you don't have to hold it) that little star-button. Then a little star will appear in the bottomn left corner of your viewfinder, and the ligth messuring is locked with the focus. ;)
I've been a Fuji user for some time now and was looking back at some of my older work shot with the 5D Mk3 and the 6D. I was blown away, why did I sell that 6D? I've had a XH2 for a few months and now thinking about going back to a 6D. Sure it's not got some of the convenient things I've come to like but at the end of the day it's the final shot that counts. The RAW files are so easy to colour grade, unlike the Fuji where I have to spend way too much time to get what I want. From a financial pov, image quality and ease of use the 6D makes a compelling argument. I don't see the one very good focus point as a bad thing either. I actually found on looking back that my 6D files were generally sharper and cleaner than the XH2!
I've had this camera since 2013 and only ever used one focus point. Shot portraits, action, landscape, night sky, travel to name a few. Why someone would need 52 focus points on a camera unless they're a spider is beyond my comprehension.

Maybe should you make a small video about how many camera bodies is not "too much" (especially old cheap ones) and what should be the "difference" between the camera bodies we should look for to cover a large scope of capabilities? I think the 6d1 wont add much for you, its similar but a bit more modern and better high ISO and dynamic range but I would also say if you want it and can afford it then why not. Its not a camera id add to plug any gaps but it is one i would add because i want it haha
Hello Martin, yet another great one. Since you tout the grip on the 6D I wanted to draw your attention to 2 critical pioneering Canons that created a proper grip. I am talking about the pre-AF T-90 and the AF era EOS 600/650/630 family with bottom undercut. I have all those samples and can't stop smiling how Canon nailed it nearly 40 yrs ago.
Yep, the extended grip on my EOS 600 is a small but significant improvement on the standard one and I like the way it gives you another choice for a strap connection. I prefer attaching my straps to the RHS of the camera rather than the default right and left hand fixing points. Apart from low light AF hunting those original EOS cameras also nailed the AF system pretty well too. It's great they work with the modern lenses.
@@richardhale9664 I use them with my 28-105 F4 IS2 L lens, amazing results; I always use 100 speed film and can get shutter down to 1/15 most of the time with clarity
“Nobody cares about blades of grass” …hilarious!!! FACTS!!! I shot portraits of my elementary art students with two totally different camera bodies, with the kit lenses, in blk&wht, and displayed them down the hallway of the school. I wanted to get reactions to my work, I needed the practice (as I am a new photographer), and I wanted to see if anyone would call me out on image quality. NO ONE CARED!!! They talked about how I was able to capture just the right moments, and how their children's personalities shown through. Actually, they're buying me more frames to fill with student portraits because they enjoyed that experience so much. You said it…the photos made them feel something special. And I can't be happier!!! Can I point out mistakes, things I could change to each portrait I put up…of course I can. You could probably teach a masterclass on what not to do with them being used as examples. But as you say, that's not really the point!
I have just got myself a 6D for astrophotography. I only have crop sensor cameras currently so I’m also looking forward to the full frame of the 6D. The only reason I would want more than 20MP is when printing and blowing up an image. Could you give some advice here? Would I be able to print a landscape at 16mm to say about a size of 60cm x 45cm?
6D bought last month as my first Full Frame - really like it. That plastic screen tho is so hard to see outside - but ordered a matt cover from Amazon (probs been in a box for a decade tho) - will update if its any good. Magic Lantern is nice for a back preview false colour to show super darks and super brights.
matt screen protector arrived and was easily installed. Made a massive difference to the usability of the annoying-to-see 6D screen - was called Expert Shield. Worth every penny.
Bought a 6D last year mainly with astro photography in mind and matched it up with a Samyang 14mm. It's performed really well and surprisingly it has also been good when used with my Sigma 150-600C for wildlife. All round a great purchase and very pleased with its performance despite its age.
Do you have a public social media I could view those astro photos? I have a Canon 6D and last year got a rokinon 14/2.8 for astro but I haven't had a chance with good composition to really test the kit yet. I have a location picked out for when I have a clear sky.
Funny; so many years ago I bought a 1 year old canon 350D and became the family photographer. And started to buy FF lenzen with the idea that one day I will upgrade.... Came in the canon 5d mark I and I almost bought one when being in Shanghai shortly after its release. But I didn't buy and over some years I lost my focus on photography. And now time to pick ; so funny to see how 'old' cameras are still holding up. Like nothing much has changed over the last 15 years. Biggest change seems just the quality of smartphone cameras...
Doing portrait shooting exclusively, I'm looking to ditch a mirrorless system for either a Canon 6D and a 50mm 1.4 and an 85mm 1.8 OR a Nikon D610 with the same lenses. There are some differences between the two cameras, but overall, they seem pretty equivalent. Do you have an insight into which might have an edge for portrait work? Thanks for your great takes on photography.
I used to do a lot of low light photography and on a tight budget - i chose the 6d. Now I'm doing more casual family photography and... What can I say? I don't think I'd become a better photographer over night but these pictures are calendar quality! (Used 5d mark 1 before).
30D and a 550D that I got for nothing. Got a Nikon D200 as well but that's probably not for this channel. Looking at the 6D for my next purchase but may end up with a 5D mk2 (bit cheaper than the 6D)
my only complaint about the 6D from a buyer's perspective is the cosmetic screen deterioation on a lot of these models. the screen's on the 5D and 5Dmkii seem to be made of better quality materials

Mostly I just use AWB with canon that seems to not really be an issue ever. Always does well, but if you prefer you can set it yourself, it just seems very accurate in auto.
Hi Martin. The 6d mk 1 is overlooked in the same way as the Fender Telecaster. People want the Fender Stratocaster with its fancy curves and Guitar Hero looks. The Telecaster is a workhorse used by the likes of, Wilko Johnson. Plus, Keith Richards, plays his Telecaster with only five strings akin to fewer focus points if you know what your doing. I still have my 6D but not used it so much after I bought my Panasonic G9 . I wanted more MP but could not afford the step up to Canon, and you can get 50 and 90mp with the G9 but as you say it does not have Canon colour science.
I'm really enjoying your videos. Talking about actually taking photos, from a previous video, I use a Canon T7i (24mm, 50, 10-18; 18-55; 55-250) other than the 50mm the rest are ef-s lenses. Without blowing up to 200% a lots of my photos look very good. A lot of "youtubers" really poo-poo apsc cameras. i do a lot local driving around and my camera is usually with me for landscape and wildlife. A shoot a lot of family outings and if I were able to shoot a wedding what other lense would you recommend, ef and or ef-s? Thanks. PS. Is there room for apsc cameras today?

I've owned EOS film and Canon DSLRs for years but only lower-mid models, so I never got to experience the multiple focus points of the pro models. And I miss focus because I have always been someone who prefers to concentrate on composition, not focus-and-recompose, or shoot with subject in the middle and crop later. I know I'd need to do either to ease frustration with results but have always resisted. I'm tempted by the R8.
My Leica M240 files were pretty easy to handle. Just take some magenta out and color balance. Very similar to my Nikon files. I love Fuji color profiles / film sims but when it comes to my own grades I struggle with their files. Things tend to get thin and desaturated so quickly. I keep them because I love the handling and the lenses.
Hi, I've just for the canon 6D for astrophotography but I was wondering what's the best sd card to use with the canon 6d? Or doesn't it really matter which one buy for it?
Back again, because once again I was trying to convince myself to dump the DSLRs and lenses and go lighter. Again. Nope. When I really give it proper thought and not just wishfulness, I realize that my 6D and 80D with my current lenses are just too good and useful. I haven't shot in a good while for various reasons. I pulled the 6D out of the bag yesterday and guess what? The battery is still well-charged. The colors and images are still great. The camera is still so nice in hand and to use. I suppose to help alleviate my burning desire to "Get something interesting to play with." affliction I just need to get an old CCD digicam. Okay, I did just order a Canon 20D to go along with my 20D Infrared converted. It's kind of like shooting a film camera without all the added expense of film. I still need to get my Nikon FM and Canon Canonet QL17 out for that matter. Let's face it. The Canon 6d is just good a camera to get rid of.
Hello Martin. Not sure if you ever had a chance to put into test Canon's EOS 1 series, but to me - they are far superior to 5D's lineup in terms of image quality (not to even mention focusing system). I sold almost immediately all of my 3 cameras (5D classic, 5D Mark2, 6D) right after I opened a first RAW file from Canon 1Ds Mark III. (Which can be considered as a "classic" camera accordingly to your definition). :) Color accuracy, image quality, details, tonal rendering and ergonomics are just on a different level compare to 5D and 6D series. This is my personal opinion, based on more than 10 years of practical experience.
I wondered for the longest time what pixel peepers were talking about. I've seen great photos on way less than 20 megapixels. I almost stood up and applauded when you said, "No one cares." Jeez, think about all the 35mm film photographers doing all that amazing work before we had digital. It's like you said. Those pics are great because I felt something.
Mine is still going strong of nearly 10 years of use. In fact it is still my main photography camera.
I actually love the fact that people think because it is an older camera it is an inferior product. Every time I see one come up on my local market place for a good deal I snatch it up. At this rate I've got at least another 15 years of shooting with a 6d.

I only used it a few times for this, but I took a few possum photos at night and the bloody thing could focus on it when I couldn't properly see it. I was stunned.

The "Canon color" is definitely a thing. I have owned many cameras from many brands. I have loved many cameras, like my old X-Pro1, E-M5ii, K-5, and D3s. The D3s is arguably my favorite camera ever. It just did so much, so well, and was a joy to use. However, none of the cameras from any of the brands, mirrorless or DSLR, of any sensor size, of any age, seem to predictably look so good and so "right" straight out of camera as my Canon gear. I think another thing that is often overlooked, in terms of technical stuff like dynamic range and high iso performance, etc, is that while Nikon, Pentax, Sony, etc, will have better dynamic range or color depth at base ISO (anything below 400, usually), the Canon files typically hold up better at higher ISO values. Of course, there will be exceptions to this, but it does seem to be the case pretty often.
Indeed, I have been looking at a ton of dynamic range DxOmark measurements, and the other brands usually have superb dynamic range at 100-200ISO, but their advantage is all but gone by ISO400-800, and then at ISO1600 or above Canons (of the same camera generation) are better. I have a suspicion that Canon have optimized their sensors for lower light, and Nikon / Sony / Fuji for super bright light.
@@ShutterNChill Actually the dynamic range gap has been closing with the new R series mirrorless, which all have now dual-ISO just like Sony.
Agree with your comments on how awesome the 6D is, especially the colours. I shot a track meet my wife was competing in with the 6D and an inexpensive 85 1.8. The photos looked amazing and her team was thrilled with the results. Just kept it on Servo AI focus, Center point only back button focused. Almost all the shots were in focus at f2. I felt my only limitation was composition since I had to stick to the centre point. 4.5 frames/second was enough to capture the moments, although more would have been nice for events like javelin. I had forgotten how well these old DSLRs tracked action.
I’m a Nikon / Fuji shooter and just picked up 2 mint 6D’s and some L glass! The L glass is so cheap today! And I was immediately shocked how that 11 year old camera or so hold ups very, very well to the latest Nikon! Low light and dynamic range is so close!! I was expecting night and day difference!! Plus there is an undescribable look to the Canon images…colour, tones and almost a paintingly look!! Those gorgeous subtle greens in landscapes!!! Why spends thousands when you can pick up full frame cameras and professional quality L lenses for a few hundred! You’re channel is very refreshing in this modern photo madness world!
There must be reasons why the 6D is THE most widely used camera for astrophotography, even 10 years after its initial release. Quite incredible when you look at the advancements in technology and the capabilities of more modern cameras.

Just purchased my first full frame dslr. Found a 6D with a shutter count of 1608 and snapped it up !!! Since I wear glasses I was having trouble seeing the full frame with the standard eyepiece. Then I found an eyepiece extender which reduces the viewfinder magnification by 30% and extends it away from the camera by about 1/2". What a great little gadget!
wait does having glasses make it difficult to see from the viewfinder?? i have glasses would it be a problem

I bought a used 6d a few months ago, one came up at a price I couldn’t refuse, also have a Panasonic G9. Both have their strengths. I’m enjoying the 6d and used it for a couple of events. Great colours and look, overall it’s a keeper for me
You're spot on! When I switched from a Canon T2i to a Panasonic G85, I instantly realized how spoiled I was with Canon colors. Fortunately, Olympus cameras have fantastic colors, but I have a 5D classic when I need those special Canon tones.
Great points! I appreciate the points on dynamic range especially. I'm going to pick another 6D today. I had one previously, used it for a year very happily -- much enjoyed the upgrade from an 80D -- and replaced it with a 5D4. Of course, the 5D4 has many more AF points. But you know, after a year of regular use, I found that for safety's sake, I would always use the centre point. I'd focus and recompose, exactly as I had been doing with the 6D. I just hate it when I miss focus, as I don't shoot large barrages of shots as a regular practice. I point carefully and shoot, and expect to get a sharp image. With the 5D4, I found I had my greatest chances of success if I used that centre AF point. Or at least one of the four or five points which are arrayed up the middle from top to bottom (not side to side).
I had my 5D4 stolen recently, and if I were rolling in money I'd get another, or an R6--but I'm not, and I'll be very happy with my old friend the 6D.
BTW, I can recommend the 6D as an ASTRO camera. I have one now that has been astro-modified at Spencer's Camera in Utah, USA, and it performs spectacularly. And speaking of colors!--The removal of the IR-cut filter that is standard practice in astro modification, MUCH increases the color pouring into the camera from the night sky, especially those gorgeous magenta-pink nebulae in the Milky Way core. But the 6D performs extremely well in astro without any modification. When I had my unmodified 6D, my astro files at high ISO's were about the same quality as those taken with my 5D4, which is also regarded as one of the best astro cameras.
I have a 5D classic that I got at the end of last year. I decided on it based on Martin's videos. I had both 6Dmk1 and 5Dmk1 i mind, and went for the 5D because I had the 20D previously, which I loved very much, and the 5Dc is almost exact replica of the 20D (same buttons, layout, menu, same battery!), but with a full frame sensor. So, with the 5Dc I did not need to get new batteries, new charger... And indeed, it is so much like my beloved 20D, with the difference that the ISO3200 of the 5Dc is as good as the ISO800 of the 20D was - or maybe even better colors, even at that high ISO! In retrospect, I would love to have the low light ability of the 6D, for indoors shooting. For outdoors, daylight, the 5Dc has not just lived up to my expectations but far surpassed it. I used to think that the Leica Q2 was my bucket-list camera, but the 5Dc feels so good, and has such astonishingly REAL looking files that I have been completely cured of my Leica-itis.
Martin's advice is absolutely superb, far more practical and beneficial than binging on the marketing channels of the latest $$ gear.
I feel the same way about my 5Dc! Outdoors it is my go-to and I’m wondering if it could be the greatest camera ever made???! Always wanted a Leica m9 but the Canon files are so satisfying and feel finished with no extra work afterwards in Lightroom. I carry mine as a second body to 5dm3 when shooting weddings but loud shutter sound limits when I can use it. Will probably retire it to “private life” soon and swap in a 6D for low light reception duty
I just go myself a 6D and am waiting for its arrival. This is my first venture into full-frame digital. Getting back into the hobby, I've been using for ages a 40D which I got new and was my first digital camera. While the 5D1 is still my dream camera (and my next purchase), I opted to get the 6D first after watching a ton of 6D reviews (including a bunch of yours) and it seemed that for what I wanted full-frame for it made more sense that the 5D1 at the moment. Can't wait!
I bought a used 6D because of your earlier video, and i love it! One of the benefits no one mentions is the silent shutter, it sound really nice and silent. But the drawbacks are that the sensor is actually 0.81% smaller, and the flash sync is only 1/180 of a second, instead of 250 on 1 series. I had 1dsmk2 before (still selling it, actually), and i'd say colours are even better on the 1ds, it's just so big and clunky. The reason i'm selling is actually because i started to use flash a lot, and the integrated grip + flash is just too much to carry around, and i use a vintage lens, and the problem is not so much i don't have live view on the 1ds, but that the mount has an extra pin that detects a genuine ef lens, and if adapter blocks that pin, it gives an error. So i had to slightly unscrew the vintage lens on 1ds before shooting, super annoying.
Hit the nail on the head there Martin. I've got a 5D3 as well, but find myself picking up the 6D all the time - its just so good to hold and is in my bag ALL the time. I got the 5D3 for the AF as I shoot a lot of equine sport (and it is great for that) but I can still use the 6D centre point and get great results. And then there's the look to the images - just wonderful. Super camera.
Which would be better for sports like football/soccer ?
@@thetoyota86perspective54 5D3 without a doubt. 5D3's are very capable, but football might be pushing it a bit. If you have the budget, maybe something with higher burst rate (FPS) - 1DX are now pretty reasonably priced, weathersealed and built like bricks. Or go Nikon and a D3S..

I picked up a 6D with only a couple thousand shutter actuations and it has been perfect except it kept selecting the left focus point and I had to keep manually bringing it back. Thought it was faulty. I realised a couple of weeks ago my nose is hitting the D pad when I look at the viewfinder because I shoot left eye dominant 😂 other than that I have really loved it.
This is so on point. My 6D is an absolute workhorse, and as you said, it gives you all you need to take good photos. If you can't take decent photos on cameras with this tech then it's not the cameras problem, it's the operator. Another great summary of a solid camera. And in a p.s, I just ordered the Neewer charger. Maybe it's me but here in China the Canon chargers 110v current thing makes them so hit and miss, you can leave one on overnight and wake up to find 10% battery charge. Having a visual % display means a lot, and 3 batteries means 2 in the grip and 1 standby. Cheers fella, top job.

First time I’ve listened to one of your reviews, what a breath of true air.
I’ve been shooting since the 70’s and have all sorts of Canon pro gear. I still get my 6D out to shoot water sports with the 500L f4 II and get fantastic results. It rarely misses the shot with that sensitive central focus spot when tracking surfers which is pretty tricky. I’ll never get rid of it.
Canon 5D3 is my latest purchase. It was ridiculously cheap with 40k shutter count from Park Cameras and is as good for studio as my old D3X whilst being a lot more versatile for neutral light shooting. Unlike Martin, I wasn't in love with the 5D2 colours and I find the mk3 colour easier to work with (personal taste.) I am minded to get a 6D to see if I like it. With all these lovely bargain used DSLRs around, I am very happy to try them out to see if I like them. I have no intention of going mirrorless currently. There's not much wrong with good old DSLRs & the prospect of expensive new super high-tech stuff just doesn't inspire me. Props to Martin - I like his approach of focusing on a camera's user experience and the aesthetic & characteristics of the RAW files - rather than on high tech features and specs.
If I got a job using a camera (not necessarily as a creative photographer) I would get a 5Diii. It's almost as cheap as the 6D but having dual card slots would be vital for clients. The 6D has better ergonomics though. I also have a 7Dii which has ergonomics like a 5D series, and it's so annoying!

@@simonharry9618 I like it. The build of the mk3 is a little more solid feeling and I feel the colour is a little more natural than the colour from the mk2.
you might be surprised but the 6D’s dynamic range is actually superior to 5D3. Well-known photographers like Dustin Abbott actually chose 6D over 5D3 for this reason. With that said, you still got a fantastic camera in 5D3, and I’d love to try one someday!
@@guyfromhelsinki Yes - I've seen quite a few of Martin's reviews. I think it would be fair to say that the 5Diii is NOT a favourite of his . I (on the other hand) am rather liking it. I am also the guy who bought a Nikon D3X in 2019 and loved it - after I'd seen The Angry Photographer saying that it was a terrible camera & no good whatsoever. 🤣
I've had my 6D for about a year, prior to that it belonged to my Uncle who used it as a second shooter body for his wedding work so I already knew what kind of results it was capable of. I've recently paired it with the 100mm f/2.8L and that's me done for the foreseeable as far as kit goes - a flash/trigger/softbox is next on my list but hopefully we'll get some decent light towards the end of the summer so I can get some outdoor work done.

[Shshshshsh… Stop telling people about the 6D classic!… The used price will start to go up!…] Seriously though, it is an excellent camera, I use mine mainly for streetphotography, where the size and weight are of importance for me. I'm always blown away by the image quality when I nail a shot. Recently I've been comparing it with my 6Dmk2, which I also love, but has a slightly different look. I mainly use the mk2 for video, but together, they are like the tag team dynamic duo. Personally I would encourage new users to bypass the 5D Classic, and even the 5D mk2 (which I actually love) for the 6D classic which is the perfect balance between; hardware, software implementation, sensor optical performance, and price. btw, there's no way you would ever need to charge three LP-E6 batteries simultaneously if you have a 6d Classic. I use my 6D every day, and can't even remember the last time I had to charge the battery. I've even shot events on ONE BAR, and gotten away with it!… Props!

Hi Martin! Nice video as always! In part thanks to your helpful videos I recently decided to purchase a used 6D dirty cheap with high usage count. Coming from a 450D, then a 60D and micro four thirds bodies, I am in love with the bigger size, deep grip, central focus point, high iso performance, colors, black and white SOOC JPEG rendering, safety shift function, battery life, wifi function to transfer already available, the great feel of the back rotating dial, big square top LCD and the (very appealing to me) silent shutter sound (which is not actually completely silent anyway). In general I prefer to use my Olympus EM1 Mark 2 micro 4/3 setup for its EVF, absolutely perfect ergonomics and layout, lesser weight, incredible IBIS, AF, advanced functions and awsome Zuiko lenses, but in al fairness I am blown away with what I am getting with just a plain 6D and 50mm f1.8 and for the case of low light or portraits I am finding 6D is just incredible. Color is something a bit personal but, honestly I much prefer the 6D colors to the ones I obtain from my Olympus system. And I am not one disliking the Olympus colors.
I'm going to get one within the next weeks, upgrading from a 1300D, my first full format. I'm really stoked for it and thank you very much to that overview video 👍👍
I got one few days ago, with a battery grip and the 50mm 1.8 stm for $115usd.
It was cheap! But it have missing flap rubber doors, the rubber it's separating from the body, the camera have marks and scratches, mushy buttons, and 120.000 shutter actuations.
Weird thing it's even in that bad shape the camera works perfectly fine. I hope the shutter don't fail soon, but the replacement is cheap.
Now I'm having fun, buying rubber replacement parts from China and watching tutorials to clean and repair the body, i want to make it look as new as possible. For some reason I love buying neglected things and repair it the best possible (bicycles, audio equipment, etc).
There's a UA-camr (a few years ago) who had two 6d cameras. One on 900,000 iterations and the other 400,000. Both working well.
Have the 5D and 5D II; now you have me thinking about getting a 6D. Great videos always.
I love my 6D. I have the 5D and 5D mk 2 as well but there is just something I can't explain about the 6D. I just love it!

I bought my 6D back in early 2013 and along with the Leica M Monochrom I bought in late 2012 it remains one of my favorite cameras today. There is just something about the files from that camera that bring me back every time I try something newer or supposedly better. The 5DSR also has a place in my kit, but the 6D gets far more use.

I've just begun to shoot mostly RAW with my 6D, having previously shot mostly JPEG Standard Picture Style while I was on a learning curve with the 6D. I'm amazed at how good the RAW files look straight out of camera. They only ever need minor adjustments using Apple Photos for iMac. I have no interest in camera reviews anymore, because I can't conceive of a camera that would be better than this, for the reasons you outlined.
On the megapixel question, 20 MP is actually more than enough on the full frame 6D. I recently worked on an old portrait of my son which was taken in RAW on a crop sensor 300D with around 6 MP and a 50 mm 1.8 lens. Even working on my 4K monitor, the image looked great! Maybe (just maybe!) slightly more resolution would have helped for a landscape shot, but my understanding is that a 4K monitor cannot resolve more detail than is contained in around 8 MP, so it's just cold calculating marketing that is brainwashing consumers into getting locked into an eternal hardware upgrade cycle.
If you shoot fast action wildlife or sports then often need to crop in significantly to frame the composition, then maybe the 6D is not the camera for you in terms of fps and sensor resolution, although it is actually surprisingly good. For all other genres, I don't understand why anyone would look elsewhere, especially with that gem of a sensor.

BTW I've purchased the Neewer pack since the original battery had lost capacity, and it has performed well for me for the past month. Much less hassle to have three batteries available. Thanks for the recommendation. @@MartinCastein
love my 6D. Bought it after watching your videos on it. Got a beat up, high shutter count model to see what the fuss was about and love it! Can push the RAW files when I need to and love the high iso performance. The only thing I miss is a flippy screen (my 70d has it) for those low shots.

Your excellent commentary on the 6D led to me ordering what appears to be a nice, low shutter count example today. Despite having a Sony A7III and several lenses I've always wanted to try a Canon DSLR. I actually don't consider it to be that "old" a camera. The MkII version is still a current production DSLR and some reviews even give a slight edge to the image quality of the first version. I'm looking forward to getting back to basics and trying it out. I'm pairing it with the Canon 50mm f1.8 to get started.
I still use the 6d for product images with macro lenses and Mauaul Focus, if I need more megapixels I use focus stacking a lot of the time, it's a gem of a camera.
I used my beloved 6D for two years before it gave out on me (power issue that’d cost more to fix than to buy another) and have been looking to get back into photography with an 5DMkIII as an upgrade for videos, but I have experienced those colors. I remember that feeling with a well lit and colorful scene, it is damn intoxicating. Likely will just end up getting another 6D but with a better lens
My one love is the 5D MKII with 50mm F1.8 stm and Tamron 70-300mm this is my set up.

I've learned photography on the rebel T2i, and have rocked that for the last 5 years. I shot a concert for a buddy of mine, and I've realized I've finally gotten to the point of maxing out the limits of its abilities.
I always look for deals on lenses, and bodies, but yesterday i saw a deal too good to pass up, so i just made the jump to a 6D mk 1, scored it for $150USD. I'm sooo excited, and what little I've played with it so far, it feels like its totally reinvented photography for me, and totally re-lit that spark i felt when i picked up my first DSLR 5 years ago. The dynamic range is night and day difference 🤯😍
I have the 6D (my first camera, thanks to your recommendation), a 5D classic, an essentially free 40D, and now I have a nikon d610 on the way. We'll see how I like the nikon, it was super cheap.

I’ve been shooting since high school(89-92), I started with a canon T50. I took forever to jump to digital. I went from a canon A2 to a canon 50D in 2010 just because diapers were more important at the time and the 5D MkI was way out of my budget. I finally got a 5D MkI, I use it to shoot my daughter’s wrestling events. I was bummed when I started reviewing my pics but thank you for reminding me that this camera was designed to kind of replicate film. I love the grainy look on my pictures.

I have never used a Canon camera of any stature. I have considered picking up a 5D and 50mm f1.8 to play with it some. They can be had for a song now and as you point out, they are still awesome. Thanks for this video. 👍📸
Spot on as always, Martin. I also use third-party batteries in a dual charger. Never an issue. I can set the 6D aside for weeks or months and pick it up and have little difference in the battery level. Just grab and go shoot. I've been wanting to go a little lighter gear-wise these days and sell/trade my Canon gear. I was thinking of the Sony a6700 that just came out. However, the 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8 zooms aren't really much lighter for the Sony. I already have the Sigma MC-11 that runs my Tamron 2.8 zooms like natives on the a5000, 5100, and ZV-E10. So keeping those lenses. I also have a Canon 80D (also solid camera). But... The 6D is just too good a camera. I'm thinking let the 80D go and the Nikon D300 with a few lenses. And keep the 6D and lenses. As you noted, the 6D is light, fits very well in the hand, and is still a rugged camera. I'm not shooting for money and haven't for a good while. I'm thinking I need to stick the 40mm F2.8 STM on the 6D and just work that combo to see where it takes me. I was wanting to go with a lighter kit I can just grab and go with instead of the whole, heavy backpack. Maybe I have just that if I simply shift my approach with what I have. Okay, I do want the a6700, but the 6D just keeps being one amazing bit of kit.

As a hobbyist, some years ago I was about to upgrade from a Canon 500d to a 6D but kind of last minute I changed my mind and got a Fuji XT-20, mainly for its small size. Though I really enjoyed the Fuji lenses and better DR (compared to the 500d) there was something about the colors that just wasn't right for me. Not to say they were bad (though some might argue that the color science in that sensor generation was worse than the previous) but it was just not my thing and even through editing I wasn't getting what I wanted. Four years later I traded in the Fuji for a Canon RP with the RF 50 1.8. I know this is extremely biased but I can say that even from the first couple of shots with it, looking at the colors I had this feeling of returning home. Really enjoy using it and I'm blown away by how good the RF nifty fifty is. The EF version was good stopped down but the RF version is usable (for me) even wide open. Cheers!
Hey Martin : I committed years back to the 6D MII system and built my lens kit around it. I'd be really curious to see your perceptions of it and how it's different from the Mark 1 if you've had a chance to get to know the M2. If you get a chance to make a video about it I'd love to see it.
Apart from film, I am shooting old Fujifilm cameras (X-T1, X100T and X-E3). I love them for the B&W images and their compactness. I am also shooting Pentax K1 ii and Canon 6D (the most recent purchase). These I prefer for their colour output (generally I am not a fan of Fuji's colour pallet and I almost always find I have to tweak it in post to get results I like) and nice, big OVFs.. Although the K1 ii is relatively new, it has not got a great up to date AF system, but that does not matter because I use mostly old and great MF Pentax K primes on it. It's beautifully engineered, built like a tank and really nice to hold in the hand, if a bit heavy. It has great functionality, ergonomics and really useful and easily accessible features built into it. The 6D is a great compromise between the small light Fuji's and the bulky K1ii. The ergonomics and functionality are almost as good as the Pentax's, but it scores with being just a bit smaller, quite a bit lighter and more discrete, has better AF and produces lovely images SOC with the two primes I currently have with it, the 40mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.8 STM ii, which are probably all the lenses I need for it (maybe an 85mm would be handy on occasion).

Spot on! However, to get that Canon color science, you need to shoot in raw. AWD jpeg on my 6D are a color disaster in tungsten light. Another nice thing is it's lightweight. I used my 6D and nifty fifty, while my 5Dsr and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 are more that twice as heavy and stay on the shelf for almost every subject.

You’ve convinced me, I’m in the market for another DSLR (partly because they aren’t making anymore) and just lately I have heard nothing but good about the 6D, I am sold on it and will get one. I was thinking about the 7Dmk2 but a lot of the features, “upgrades” on it are irrelevant to me and my photography. I have always used APS-C, apart from 35mm film and my Lumix LX100, (I often joke that I always shoot full frame, as I don’t crop my images, I love the discipline of getting it right when framing and I want to use everything the sensor has to offer) 20mp on a full frame sensor sounds like low light heaven to me, I only ever use the centre focus point anyway. My first DSLR was a 6.3mp Canon 10D and the A3 prints from it were beautiful! Then a 30D, I used a 40D for years, then a 7D. I will keep my 7D and still use it because it’s a quality image making tool. All things considered it makes perfect sense for me to get the 6D as another body. I try not to get too bogged down in technical stuff, I know how to get the best from a camera, everything else is art, but I appreciate and enjoy channels like you who tell it like it is. One of the many reasons that I’m not interested in the new Canon mirrorless jobs is that a DSLR is simple in comparison, I don’t want to go through 600 menus when I can just get the settings I want with a click and a turn! And why would I want to pay a lot more money for a mirrorless system when it’s not going to benefit me in any way, shape or form? I prefer the look feel and handling of a DSLR. Someone could go out and buy the most expensive, latest, camera it’s possible to buy, it wont/cant give you great images…only the person behind the camera can do that!
I sometimes think that camera manufacturers push the 'more is better' argument to help sell their latest models. More focus points, more frames per second, more megapixels. I've been a fan of the 6D for a long time (I bought a one new in 2012, which I still use) and it's specs have always met my needs. For example, I don't need 20 fps - I rarely use the 5fps the 6D offers. Short of using a film camera. the 6D is the closest I have found to getting back to traditional hands on photography. And while I know the single SD card slot is a risk (though I've never had a failure) - film cameras only held one roll of film - so that came with its risks too.
Martin, thanks for your great and timely video. I have been eying to buy a 6d for some time now. And I purchased a well use one on mbp last week. I have been shooting with the 5d classic for over a year now. And I want some better low light performance. Actually at a friend's birthday party I shot photos with a borrowed 6d and the 24-105, 4.0. I thought ergonomic wise the camera felt a little bit too small in my hands compared to my old Nikon d200. But time will tell. Once I receive the camera, I will slap on a 40mm, 2.8 and report back...
Yes report back, the 6d feels a bit small I agree, but if you try mirrorless then they feel smaller and then going back to the 6d feels like a good compromise all round
Completely agree on the bit about Canon colour science. I had a 5D mk1 but sold it because I mainly use a Fuji XT3. I find myself playing with the Fuji JPEG settings or editing the RAW files to look like the output of my 5D SOOC.
Love my 6D, would never change it. Even use it for wildlife, small birds etc. I don’t mind binning those that the focus missed.

I have worked with a lot of cameras, even Nikon...wel, most of the 5D's, exept for the "Classic". And some more expensive brands. I used to live off of portrait photo. I always just use the center focus point and recompose anyway. I now live with my beloved 6D, a 5D MK2, a 70D and the first EOS-M. And i love it!! :)
About focusing and recomposing. I have heard "skilled" photograpers say "ok, recomposing is ok, but you can only lock the focus, not the ligth messuring". To those I will only say....if you look faaar up on the rigth backside of your Canon DSLR, rigth belov the top LCD....there's a button with a little "star" abowe it. Lock the focus, press (you don't have to hold it) that little star-button. Then a little star will appear in the bottomn left corner of your viewfinder, and the ligth messuring is locked with the focus. ;)
I've been a Fuji user for some time now and was looking back at some of my older work shot with the 5D Mk3 and the 6D. I was blown away, why did I sell that 6D? I've had a XH2 for a few months and now thinking about going back to a 6D. Sure it's not got some of the convenient things I've come to like but at the end of the day it's the final shot that counts. The RAW files are so easy to colour grade, unlike the Fuji where I have to spend way too much time to get what I want. From a financial pov, image quality and ease of use the 6D makes a compelling argument. I don't see the one very good focus point as a bad thing either. I actually found on looking back that my 6D files were generally sharper and cleaner than the XH2!
I've had this camera since 2013 and only ever used one focus point. Shot portraits, action, landscape, night sky, travel to name a few. Why someone would need 52 focus points on a camera unless they're a spider is beyond my comprehension.

Maybe should you make a small video about how many camera bodies is not "too much" (especially old cheap ones) and what should be the "difference" between the camera bodies we should look for to cover a large scope of capabilities? I think the 6d1 wont add much for you, its similar but a bit more modern and better high ISO and dynamic range but I would also say if you want it and can afford it then why not. Its not a camera id add to plug any gaps but it is one i would add because i want it haha
Hello Martin, yet another great one. Since you tout the grip on the 6D I wanted to draw your attention to 2 critical pioneering Canons that created a proper grip. I am talking about the pre-AF T-90 and the AF era EOS 600/650/630 family with bottom undercut. I have all those samples and can't stop smiling how Canon nailed it nearly 40 yrs ago.

Yep, the extended grip on my EOS 600 is a small but significant improvement on the standard one and I like the way it gives you another choice for a strap connection. I prefer attaching my straps to the RHS of the camera rather than the default right and left hand fixing points. Apart from low light AF hunting those original EOS cameras also nailed the AF system pretty well too. It's great they work with the modern lenses.
@@richardhale9664 I use them with my 28-105 F4 IS2 L lens, amazing results; I always use 100 speed film and can get shutter down to 1/15 most of the time with clarity
“Nobody cares about blades of grass” …hilarious!!! FACTS!!! I shot portraits of my elementary art students with two totally different camera bodies, with the kit lenses, in blk&wht, and displayed them down the hallway of the school. I wanted to get reactions to my work, I needed the practice (as I am a new photographer), and I wanted to see if anyone would call me out on image quality. NO ONE CARED!!! They talked about how I was able to capture just the right moments, and how their children's personalities shown through. Actually, they're buying me more frames to fill with student portraits because they enjoyed that experience so much. You said it…the photos made them feel something special. And I can't be happier!!! Can I point out mistakes, things I could change to each portrait I put up…of course I can. You could probably teach a masterclass on what not to do with them being used as examples. But as you say, that's not really the point!
I have just got myself a 6D for astrophotography. I only have crop sensor cameras currently so I’m also looking forward to the full frame of the 6D.
The only reason I would want more than 20MP is when printing and blowing up an image. Could you give some advice here? Would I be able to print a landscape at 16mm to say about a size of 60cm x 45cm?

6D bought last month as my first Full Frame - really like it. That plastic screen tho is so hard to see outside - but ordered a matt cover from Amazon (probs been in a box for a decade tho) - will update if its any good. Magic Lantern is nice for a back preview false colour to show super darks and super brights.
matt screen protector arrived and was easily installed. Made a massive difference to the usability of the annoying-to-see 6D screen - was called Expert Shield. Worth every penny.
Bought a 6D last year mainly with astro photography in mind and matched it up with a Samyang 14mm. It's performed really well and surprisingly it has also been good when used with my Sigma 150-600C for wildlife. All round a great purchase and very pleased with its performance despite its age.
Do you have a public social media I could view those astro photos? I have a Canon 6D and last year got a rokinon 14/2.8 for astro but I haven't had a chance with good composition to really test the kit yet. I have a location picked out for when I have a clear sky.

Funny; so many years ago I bought a 1 year old canon 350D and became the family photographer. And started to buy FF lenzen with the idea that one day I will upgrade....
Came in the canon 5d mark I and I almost bought one when being in Shanghai shortly after its release. But I didn't buy and over some years I lost my focus on photography.
And now time to pick ; so funny to see how 'old' cameras are still holding up.
Like nothing much has changed over the last 15 years. Biggest change seems just the quality of smartphone cameras...

Doing portrait shooting exclusively, I'm looking to ditch a mirrorless system for either a Canon 6D and a 50mm 1.4 and an 85mm 1.8 OR a Nikon D610 with the same lenses. There are some differences between the two cameras, but overall, they seem pretty equivalent. Do you have an insight into which might have an edge for portrait work? Thanks for your great takes on photography.
The 6D Mk ii would have the DPAF focus system and a flippy screen.... Which one did you pick?
I used to do a lot of low light photography and on a tight budget - i chose the 6d. Now I'm doing more casual family photography and... What can I say? I don't think I'd become a better photographer over night but these pictures are calendar quality! (Used 5d mark 1 before).
And key feature I forgot to mention: the wireless connection, being able to share pictures immediately via smartphone
30D and a 550D that I got for nothing. Got a Nikon D200 as well but that's probably not for this channel. Looking at the 6D for my next purchase but may end up with a 5D mk2 (bit cheaper than the 6D)
Why would a 6d mark ii not be on the same level under the radar like the mark i..?

my only complaint about the 6D from a buyer's perspective is the cosmetic screen deterioation on a lot of these models. the screen's on the 5D and 5Dmkii seem to be made of better quality materials

Mostly I just use AWB with canon that seems to not really be an issue ever. Always does well, but if you prefer you can set it yourself, it just seems very accurate in auto.

The 6d mk 1 is overlooked in the same way as the Fender Telecaster. People want the Fender Stratocaster with its fancy curves and Guitar Hero looks.
The Telecaster is a workhorse used by the likes of, Wilko Johnson. Plus, Keith Richards, plays his Telecaster with only five strings akin to fewer focus points if you know what your doing.

I still have my 6D but not used it so much after I bought my Panasonic G9 . I wanted more MP but could not afford the step up to Canon, and you can get 50 and 90mp with the G9 but as you say it does not have Canon colour science.
I'm really enjoying your videos. Talking about actually taking photos, from a previous video, I use a Canon T7i (24mm, 50, 10-18; 18-55; 55-250) other than the 50mm the rest are ef-s lenses. Without blowing up to 200% a lots of my photos look very good. A lot of "youtubers" really poo-poo apsc cameras. i do a lot local driving around and my camera is usually with me for landscape and wildlife. A shoot a lot of family outings and if I were able to shoot a wedding what other lense would you recommend, ef and or ef-s? Thanks. PS. Is there room for apsc cameras today?

its similar, its about the closest in a more modern camera. If you are used the 5d mark 1 then the 6d colour will feel at home to you

I've owned EOS film and Canon DSLRs for years but only lower-mid models, so I never got to experience the multiple focus points of the pro models. And I miss focus because I have always been someone who prefers to concentrate on composition, not focus-and-recompose, or shoot with subject in the middle and crop later.
I know I'd need to do either to ease frustration with results but have always resisted. I'm tempted by the R8.
My Leica M240 files were pretty easy to handle. Just take some magenta out and color balance. Very similar to my Nikon files.
I love Fuji color profiles / film sims but when it comes to my own grades I struggle with their files. Things tend to get thin and desaturated so quickly. I keep them because I love the handling and the lenses.

Great value camera with full frame sensor.
Back again, because once again I was trying to convince myself to dump the DSLRs and lenses and go lighter. Again. Nope. When I really give it proper thought and not just wishfulness, I realize that my 6D and 80D with my current lenses are just too good and useful. I haven't shot in a good while for various reasons. I pulled the 6D out of the bag yesterday and guess what? The battery is still well-charged. The colors and images are still great. The camera is still so nice in hand and to use. I suppose to help alleviate my burning desire to "Get something interesting to play with." affliction I just need to get an old CCD digicam. Okay, I did just order a Canon 20D to go along with my 20D Infrared converted. It's kind of like shooting a film camera without all the added expense of film. I still need to get my Nikon FM and Canon Canonet QL17 out for that matter. Let's face it. The Canon 6d is just good a camera to get rid of.
Still going strong, as a backup now.
The only thing chagned was the rubber on the body..and the batteries.Been through ice and hell and back.
Hello Martin. Not sure if you ever had a chance to put into test Canon's EOS 1 series, but to me - they are far superior to 5D's lineup in terms of image quality (not to even mention focusing system). I sold almost immediately all of my 3 cameras (5D classic, 5D Mark2, 6D) right after I opened a first RAW file from Canon 1Ds Mark III. (Which can be considered as a "classic" camera accordingly to your definition). :)
Color accuracy, image quality, details, tonal rendering and ergonomics are just on a different level compare to 5D and 6D series.
This is my personal opinion, based on more than 10 years of practical experience.
