  • After riding on each tire for about 15 hours, I decided to do a review with my thoughts on each one - IRC M5B vs. VE33S Gekkota vs. iX-09w Gekkota.

    VE33S is the Goldilocks of tires. It has been a fantastic performer in the Northeast tight technical environments of, rocks, roots, brook crossings and mud.

    Thanks for taking the time for doing this review. I’ve been running the ve-33s for a few months now in the Vancouver BC area (PNW) and it’s by far my favourite tire to date. For winter riding weather (cold and wet here), I just put on a set of Dunlop AT81-Ex. They’re very gummy with amazing grip in the wet roots. I look forward to trying the IX-09 to compare.

      I agree - VE33s is my fav all-around tire. I’ve heard good things about the EX. ITC is coming out w an update to the ix-09 - it will have a stiffer carcass.

    For my Westbird5 KTM 500 I've been very pleased with the M5B coupled with a Tubliss and LOW psi. Like Velcro traction I tell people! As it wears down I get another fresh tire feel when I cut and edge on the leading corners. I ride it in the ugliest PNW trails in the winter sloppy roots and rocks.
    My channel vids reveal this traction. I must state though, the Rekluse in 2nd gear instead of 1st in the gnarly tech stuff is THE magic for maintaining traction!

    I’m not tire spinner but Dunlop’s at81ex is soft and only last for 15 hours.
    I flip the direction each 7-8 hours which is about half of its life
    I think this tire is close to ix09w and has 2 plies of struct as well. I had 3 flat tires in 6 hours with tubliss……
    What do you think about JX8? In between ve33 and ix09?

    • @WASemiHardEnduro
      @WASemiHardEnduro  Місяць тому

      I'm a big fan of the JX8. It's very similar to the AT81EX. The JX8 seems to have a stiffer sidewall through, but they both have soft crowns. I like the JX8 a bit more overall, but the AT81EX has larger/wider knobs that help it dig in soft terrain instead of folding.

    • @WASemiHardEnduro
      @WASemiHardEnduro  4 роки тому

      I haven’t tried it, just read other reviews where they mentioned issues w tubliss. In theory should be fine, you just won’t need to run as low pressure.

      WA Semi-Hard Enduro I just put 7 hours on the ix09w gakkota with tubliss in Moab (obviously the wrong application) and punctured it. The 2 ply gakkota probably needs an HD tube. And in 7 hours the tire was gone.

    • @WASemiHardEnduro

    Appreciate the review! I have a M5B sitting in shed that I am planning on running in the E Washington races this season. How would you compare the VE33S to the Cheater 525? The 525 has been my go to tire for the PNW.

    • @WASemiHardEnduro
      @WASemiHardEnduro  4 роки тому

      The VE33s is very similar to the 525 Cheater! Can’t go wrong with either, just avoid the 110 Cheater. The 120 is better, it heavier.

    • @evanjohnson5480
      @evanjohnson5480 4 роки тому

      I agree. The 120 version of the 525 is very similar in performance to the VE33S. The 110 version of the 525 chunks easily.

    Interesting about the M5B sizing being smaller than expected. Is this your opinion or something known in the industry?
    I was going to order a 120/80-18 but now I'm thinking a 130 at least.

    • @WASemiHardEnduro
      @WASemiHardEnduro  3 роки тому +1

      M5B sizing is known to be off. If you’d normally run a 120 in another tire, then get the 140 M5B.

    I am very interested in the VE33S but the 110 size makes me leary. I've always ran the FIM rated 140 tires (Michelin and Shinko). Does the 110 mount up larger than the size indicates? I wish they would offer the tire in a larger size
