      but if you had the discipline youd use the zoom with same intentions and rather than one focal length you'll have several. "Today ill use the 25, tomorrow ill practice with the 35" and so on and so forth

      I also own a sigma 10-20 4-5.6 that is perfect for vlogging, i also own a 24-70 2.8 sigma but it's awful, cannot focus, colors are flat but in the wrong way, quality isn't there..

    With photography I never liked using zooms because I always felt like it led to me framing shots the exact same way. I would use primes so that I’d have to get creative, move around a bit instead of just zooming the lens to the point that I had a decent frame from my position. From this video it seems the depth of field is the main consideration for you when considering primes vs zooms. What about these super fast zooms? There’s a Lumix 10-25mm 1.8 for m43 (bmpcc4k) that would probably be amazing, ticking your dof box as well as convenience.

    @Mark Bone A question regarding Fstops: On full frame cameras, making the aperture as open as possible gives you that razor thin plane of focus especially for a lens that goes to F1.4. That being said, do you rack focus like crazy on your shoots? Do you use the Sony wizard magic auto focus? or maybe a bit of both? (Good luck to Panasonic users on that BTW).

    Your videos and documentary approach have helped me a lot in rethinking and writing my projects.
    I am currently shooting with an APS-C camera and I have 2 prime lens 35mm and 50mm ( 52 and 75 mm equivalent on my camera ).
    I love the rendering of your close-ups in 24mm, which is very interesting for interviews or portraits. I have two questions:
    Do you have distortions with the sigma or canon at 24mm compared to other focal lengths : 35/50 mm in particular ?
    Do you find the result of the canon interesting from 24 to 35mm, I'm interested in the zoom for the versatility ?
    Thanks in advance :)

Rather than focus on the shoot. Primes just free my mind up and give me a look I really love. My go to primes sigma 20mm, 35mm, Canon 50mm, pretty soon I will add a medium teIephoto. Mark the FX9 is so amazing. I know you already found out about the fx9 by buying it, but I just wanted to say that. We use an fs7 for college athletics video as our “big” camera and I love it so much compared to our c300ii. I am hoping to get an fx9 one day for my personal work. We use the Rokinon primes a lot, they are cheap but look really really nice. Eventually I’d love to rent some sigma cine zooms... for sports we need to make quick adjustments so we often use a 70-200 for football or a 24-70 for basketball. Zooms are essential for some sports but you can make a prime work!

    • @markbone
      @markbone  4 роки тому

      Yes I agree, the Fs7 was superior to the C300ii in many ways. I think Canon has made some incredible progress with the C500ii. 7:36 ...but with the *prime* lenses...
    But, yes, that's one of the main differences.
    Although I think that in situations of improvisation, with prime lenses you can defend the position for being close to the subject while with zoom lenses there is a risk of blocking the subject by someone standing in front of the camera. I've missed important moments like that.
    Of course, with zoom lenses you still have the opportunity to shorten the focal length. But often with the possibility of zooming, we become lazier.

    I have a Sony 24-70mm F/2.8 G Master I would be really interested to hear your thoughts about how using it at 24mm stands up to the Sigma 24mm F/1.4. How big of a deal do you think that F stop difference is when it comes to film making? The Sigma is affordable so the price isn't an issue I'm just more curious if you feel that it's really worth me infesting in being that the G Master is a very good quality lens. I'm also interested in how you feel about the Sigma 24mm F/1.4 vs the Sony 24mm F/1.4 G Master being that they have the same specs. From the reviews I've seen they are both great lens with the only noticeable difference being that the sigma is a little less sharp in the edges. I know you're not a big gear comparison guy but I really hope you reply bc I'm really interested in your thoughts! Thanks for all the great content man!

    Maybe you can help: what's special about Anamorphic lenses? i've looked around on and off youtube, nobody seems to give a good answer..everybody says that they are expensive, but not why..

    • @markbone
      @markbone  4 роки тому +1

      Anamorphics shoot a 1.66 or 2.35 or even a 2.1 aspect ratio so they essentially double the lens size for field of view (FOV). So essentially when shooting on anamorphic with an aspect ratio of 2:35:1 (or 2:39:1) your lens length is cut in half. So if you shoot with a 35mm you get the frame size and FOV of something closer to an 18mm BUT you get the shallow depth of field as if you're shooting on the 35mm still. It allows for unique bokeh in the background on wider shots. Overall it's a more "organic" look that isn't so sterile as stills lenses. The bokeh on anamorphics IMHO and many other cinematographers would agree is that it's just more interesting and helps you isolate your character better
