I’m more of that lazy Gardener that throws the fertilizer close by and hopes that all the plants get what they need… eventually 😆 your garden is heaven!
WOW!!! What a beautifully serene garden you have created! So tranquil and peaceful. I bet in the evening, sitting on your back patio, the beauty and peaceful feeling just washes over you. So glad that I discovered your channel!!!
Loving your garden and the changes we're allowed to enjoy with you! As a side note, will there ever be a time we can meet your sweet little fur babies?
Great fertiliser video!!! It’s great to see how other gardeners fertilise there plants, trees, veggies, flowers whatever. Your garden will be so happy. 🌹🌿🌱🌺🍓🍅🌽🌸🌟👌👍🥰
Love this content so much. I have several hydrangeas here in my North Texas garden and I nearly burned one plant up one year. So thrilled to learn more about fertilizing my roses and hydrangeas from you. Love your garden and your common sense approach. And all the beauty you have created is so healing!
I can’t believe the difference you have made on this property. What a gorgeous garden. I just planted some Green Giants as a hedge, and love them already.
THANK YOU!! Was just wondering what fertilizer you use. Your gardens are fabulous. I can’t believe how well you remember all the plant names! All great info. 🌸🌷🌻
I'm just planting my first whole 2 yards (front and back) with shrubs, perienniels, and a few annuals. So glad to find someone with alot of plants and types, and all organic matter,,,I appreciate this! But as I said,, everything is new... and for the last MANY years all my plants were in pots, so it's also a new part of the country. Here it rains alot! When do I fertilize when it's raining all the time? Anyway, I'm watching now and thanks for your perspectives, and your lovely gardens. Cheers!
Thanks for a great video. The view from your pergola area looking over your gardens is lovely. My dogs have to be closely watched for a few days, as the tempting smell of organic fertilizer is quite attractive!
I absolutely love it so! It's been so nice to have this Spring already to sit under as a break from garden work or to listen and watch the rain. One of the best investments I've made in the home/garden.
So I looked this up because I was curious and apparently the American pronunciation is say it like the allium (sha luht) and the British pronunciation is like you said (shuh lot). Very interesting!
Hi Matthew! I don't have any trees, shrubs, or hydrangeas, but this was very interesting and informative. The view from your new pergola is beautiful. I'm so glad you were able to get it, and I'm sure you've been enjoying it a lot already. I hope you will do a video on fertilizing your other perennial flowers and annuals. I plant a lot of annuals in pots on my decks and have a few perennial flowers out front. Thank you so much for sharing!
I bought 10 bags oh holly tone from HD early this year, it was only $16.99 per 27lb bag, it's such a great price. Thank you Matthew, great garden, and fertilizer is the key to a successful garden for me.
We went organic - and mulch and we really see a huge difference We still have to manage diseases in our fruit trees and roses, but welcoming wildlife, infusing some natives, and most importantly not pushing too much growth on plants - so much less to do, and it looks so much better. But we agree it adds up.
LOL I have the SAME pronunciation issues with Lady of Shalott!! I always want to say it like the small onion first too. Your roses are looking so gorgeous!! I love your Weigelas too!!
I love this clip. I would love to see how you apply the stake fertilizers. How far from the plant they go? How long do they last? How deep do you have to bury them? Etc.
They hammer into the ground with a mallet and the little plastic cap you set on top of them that comes in the packaging. You just follow the instructions on the packaging. I place mine under the canopy (drip line) like my other fertilizers and only do it once per year. I generally use more than one for my larger trees. The instructions may recommend more times per year, but if you have a lot of trees that could get expensive.
I do about the same as you ln only I split it up & do it twice, ince in the spring, once in the summer, because I get 70 inches of rain on average, & have clay soil, & my property floods a lot, & I feel like it washes it away more quickly... so I split it up. Nut good to know its not really good to do it in the summer!
Maxsea bloom is the best, it’s very, very expensive but worth every dime, all my neighbors ask why my flowers are so abundant with bloom. It’s Espoma and Maxsea especially, also Neptunes harvest is a great organic alternative. You get what you pay for and I’m will to pay more for the best!
Those were planted 4 years ago, so I don't have a video on the planting itself. But, one of my very first videos I uploaded in 2020 discussed how they were planted, width, watering, etc. So if you look way back in time you'll find it. :)
I fertilized my bushes in April the day before a night rain so I know it’s going to get into the plant root system I want rather than wildlife or pets scratching it away.
Costco is by far the cheapest place to buy Hollytone, particularly if you want to avoid buying 50lb bags. But when it comes to Biotone Bulb tone and Rose tone, we have found that nurseries that sell wholesale that cater to landscapers that also sell retail can be a good option at least in some cases. The key is to be willing to buy 18lb bags (25 lb for biotone). Or start a really popular YT channel LOL
I NEED A FERTILIZER SPONSORSHIP! haha. In the realm of things, I don't actually purchase much throughout the year since I only fertilize in Spring for the most part. But I did go through almost 4 complete bags yesterday, (roughly $80-100 in fertilizer in just an hour) so it does add up. I have purchased Biotone online and locally and the price on it specifically this year has skyrocketed. It's at least $10 more at every garden center I've been to than it was just last year and I've already purchased 3 bags this year. I've just had the best luck with it so I can't see forgoing purchasing it as a great starter fertilizer.
@@SouthernersGarden We only fertilize in the early spring, except DA roses which get a second sprinkle (often Rose and Iron tone) after the first flush. We use a lot, but a lot less than recommended. What we find particularly hard to buy is Biotone - the price on that is high - really high, now that only plus is available. But by buying a 25lb bag, that helps a lot. The key is avoid buying it at the local nursery, unfortunately and buying at a place where landscapers shop - that is what we do, we have to Note We buy a lot of plants from small places
New Jersey has a fertilizer law due to the destruction caused to the Barnegat Bay but it’s impossible to enforce. Composted leaves and wood chips are the cheapest fertilizer.
Thank you for sharing this educational video. I wish I could use this fertilizer. I bought a whole bunch of it at beginning of spring. Found out the hard way my German Shepard puppy is highly attracted to it. She dug massive holes around the plants and pulled some things out, eating the bottom of the plants used with biotin when planted. If you ever hear another option for dog owners, ha please share. For now I think I’ll try to find a liquid.
Oh no! Most organic fertilizers use some type of animal byproduct which some pets are super attracted to. Maybe finding something that’s not animal based may work well, but it would be hard to find.
Wanted to let you know I just bought an Eley garden hose. No leaks or links so far. My only issue is my favorite hose sprayer doesn’t fit and it fit my other hose that was also 5/8. 🤷♀️Also seems pretty heavy for a lightweight hose and yes VERY pricey. As gardeners, we are always looking for the perfect hose. Thx for the recommendation!
Oh nice! I love mine. My oldest is probably going on 4 years old and looks brand new. It's odd you hose sprayer doesn't work though since they're the standard size of any other hose. I've not had that issue with any attachments. The prices do look like they've increased quite a bit though. Much more than what I paid several years ago.
I will have to check my Home Depot locations in late fall for Espoma fertilizers. I have come to understand that the stores in the northern states tend to put more plants and garden supplies on sales than the stores in my area, southeastern NC, zone 8a. I just figure we have a long growing season, so why would they discount products that remain in demand? Your garden is looking quite lovely!
@@SouthernersGarden Can you address that sometime in your vlog? Even just acknowledging you have the problem. Not only do they munch but this year something is incessantly digging in the beds and pots. I'm growing veggies in Wisconsin so can't put the usual repellants down. Just started landscaping and you are an inspiration and a great source of knowledge. Thank you!
@@terrimarks3694 I mentioned it in several videos in early spring where many of the shrubs I planted last fall were ate to the ground. I don’t typically have issues except in late Fall and Spring.
Tell me about your DeWalt drill. I've gotten a long bulb auger (4"x28") and don't want to buy an actual auger. I see yours is a 60V, found a combo kit for $379, but you may have a more specific recommendation. Thanks.
The drill I use only for gardening is in all my video descriptions. :) It’s not a 60v drill, I just use 60v batteries because it provides it a little more power and runs much longer than the 20v batteries do. All the Dewalt 60v batteries can be used in the 20v tools which is super handy.
@@SouthernersGarden Thanks, I had no idea you could use a higher voltage battery! I was able to get my last holes dug today because of the rain we’ve had (Chatt) this week, so I can delay a bit longer on the drill. I’m all planted and mulched now 🥳 for this year.
I went over it in more detail in my grass seed sowing video I did at the beginning of the month, so I didn't discuss it here as I don't use it on my flower beds specifically.
I looked it up because someone said something different in another comment. The correct American pronunciation is "sha luht" like the allium, and the British pronunciation is "shuh lot". So it's good to know that whether I mispronounce it one way, it is correct in another country. haha
Arbs are not acid loving plants. That’s why I clarified that I have a high pH soil and that I use holly tone primary to bring the pH closer to normal instead of plant tone. If you have an acidic soil I wouldn’t necessarily use it, but I’ve been using it in my garden for 4 years now to fertilize the arbs.
So fun to visit and see how you do things thank you for sharing!
Beautiful garden! Good information on fertilizer.
You are so knowledgeable thank you for sharing. I am a new gardener of one year and I’m excited to see how well my hydrangeas do this second year.
