Happy weekend, y’all! HeirloomRoses.com is having a large sale through December 2nd and I have an additional stackable coupon code for an extra 10% off using “SOUTHERNJOY” across the entire website. That puts many roses at a great bargain for spring shipping and if you like the trellis I put together in the last video you can get up to 30% off it using the stackable code. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families!
Hi Matthew, great video. I am forever fighting black spot on my roses. I pick up fallen leaves and clean my secateurs etc. I also spray my roses. Then I see that some garden advice says don't worry about black spot. I will follow your instructions. 😊😊😊
I consider all rose pruning videos a good refresher, Matthew because I always question myself in pruning. I do mine late winter/early spring (when the forsythia blooms). Good video.
I have been joining my wife in watching your blog in our morning garden videos. I really enjoy your expertise since you are in our area of Ohio and we can apply your knowledge to our garden. Please keep up your good works!
2April ice storms here is Mid Ontario Canada killed 4 standard hydrangea trees so now we cut the blooms off and wrap them in burlap. So far so good🤞🇨🇦Zone 5b/6a
In southern Ontario, Canada, I find the buds on Macrophylla hydrangeas are fine over winter but it's in early spring when the buds start to swell and then we get a late hard freeze that may kill them.
I haven’t winterized my climbers before. The ones on the front of the house against brick seem to stay evergreen without any issues. They at least did last year. We will see how the James Galway performs this winter without protection.
This was a great pruning and winter prep video. Looking forward to seeing your Heirloom Rose Collection bloom in 2025. Have you heard of Grace Rose Farm roses? The colors are unique.
When you winterize your roses do you put down any mulch/ compost around the base? I’m in 6b in New York and new at roses. I had been told/read to do that to protect the crown. Is that because some roses are not thier own root?
You can certainly do that or wrap them like I mentioned for the hydrangeas. I tend to plant mine a little deep anyway. I haven’t found it is necessary to pile mulch where I am and I have so many roses it would take more time. But if it makes you feel comfortable, do it!

That’s wild! I’d never expect that because they’re so hardy.

Agree, in north west michgian my hydrangeas are fine through the winter. If I ever cover them briefly, it’s in spring.
Great info,thanks
Thanks Matthew. This was a very good educational video! Happy Thanksgiving if we don’t see you until then. Have a great holiday!
