Ok, I have to admit this video was not optimal. And I wasn't too prepared. The good news is that I have made a part 2 where I show some more of the good features of this BMW. It will be uploaded later tonight :)
Hi Bjorn - I usually enjoy your videos, but I don't enjoy watching you bash other vehicles to reaffirm your choice of a Tesla. Not everyone can afford a car costing more than $100K. I know this was a loaner, but you're comparing apples and oranges.
+garytanaka Watch the whole video. I already said that this was a car that cost 1/2 or 1/3 of a Model S. What I wanted to test was aspects that didn't depend on the price of the car at all: - Refueling time/cost, smell of diesel - Pros and cons of BMW interior vs Tesla
+Bjørn Nyland The fuel cost is an interesting point that is easily overlooked. I was waiting for the moment where you would say: "Considering my wage at the university, income tax etc., it would take me about X to earn back the 200 NOK that I left at the pump. By that time the Tesla would have been on its way already with a full charge." In a world where time is money, spending time at a supercharger can be cheaper than spending money for fuel.
***** That is true. However, the fuel cost is calculated in the car. That's how many people do it when they consider a Tesla vs a fossil. For example: A BMW 3-series like this one with some equipment cost 400k NOK. Over a period of ten years it would cost 150k NOK in fuel and 50k nok in repairs (very rough numbers). For the same money, you can buy a Model S 70D for 600k NOK.
I get this car (320d). What is amazing is the range : 1000km, 4,5l/100km. But Elon answered to my concern with yesterday announcement: in 3 years, EV will have a 1000km range!
Why do you intentionally behaving like a newbie to this conventional automobile? even if it has one of the most ergonomic and simple to figure out control units :) I know that you may wanted to put some humor flavour but it is irritating, just saying :p
+FreewayMT Thank you for the feedback. I wasn't really trying to be funny. I stated in the beginning that this was a loaner. That means I don't know the system too much. So the clumsy start was actually how some new driver would have done as well. My point with that part is that a touchscreen is superior to any other input method when it comes to navigation. Don't worry. I made a part 2 follow-up video that I will upload later today. This time I actually read the manual. Speaking of manual. Most people don't read the Tesla Model S manual either. They ask all kinds of questions on Facebook that they could have figured out by themselves if they did read the manual. However, even though they haven't read it, they were still able to use most of the car's intuitive features.
+FreewayMT Unless you've driven and experienced a Tesla, you would not understand how outdated and clumsy traditional gas cars are...we traded our Mercedes in for a Model S and my wife's first comment was how amazing the Tesla was to drive and live with day to day in comparison.
SmartElectricCar My point exactly. Before I got my Samsung S2 smartphone a long time ago, I refused to get a smartphone because I believed my Samsung SGH-E370 "dumbphone" was better for writing text, answering phone, etc. But now that I have used smartphones for a while it would be going back in time using the SGH-E370 again.
I think what you said about charging and refuel time comparison is true. There are exceptions in cities like Hong Kong. The superchargers are always fully utilized and the charge speeds are slower or it is difficult to get a charging spot.
Humm.. yes anybody that has regular use of an electric car will know exactly how it feels when you get back in a combustion engined car. It is exactly how you describe.. very strange feeling! Just like going back to the steam age.
Thank you, for your honest evaluations. I know some people may have some trouble, with you saying things that they don't agree with. You can't please everyone, even if you wanted to. Also, I've noticed that some people are so in love with the a car manufacturer, they don't have an open mind, when it comes to reviews of cars made by the said manufacturer. How dare you say ANYTHING negative about _______. (fill in the blank). lol I have to mention that you also say negative things about Teslas, for example - when you talked about the light in the trunk. I know you aren't pandering to Tesla, and that you are sharing your honest thoughts. Thanks, I appreciate that, very much!!!
+Astrogirl1usa Thank you for the feedback. Yes, I did point out good and bad sides of both Tesla and BMW. The problem was that the BMW fans only saw my bad comments about the BMW.
I'm so used to watching you in your Model S ; that after watching this video for next 10 minutes or so i napped. I guess ICE or diesel cars don't fascinate me anymore.
Once you are used to a Tesla, this user interface seems prehistoric. Makes you wonder why they can't come up with something better after decades of making cars. Why no use a large touchscreen like Tesla? Makes life so much easier.
Hi Björn, I drive exactly the same BMW Model as Company car, 80.000 km per year, but the 320d with 184 hp, its the best "fossil-car" I ever had, but I rather would drive a Tesla! Wait for Model 3 ! Ronald
I'm also looking for his opinion too. Many vw drivers are angry because they'll be forced to apply the emission software that may increase mpg and reduce performance.
Bjørn said that I could answer this. I am Morgan btw, so you might know me from the world record attempt :-p For me, this was not really surprising. There was something fishy about VW being able to make a diesel engine so efficient and clean as they did. NOx (will elaborate on this further down) is created mainly in diesel engines, and happens when there is high temperature and high pressure. That fuses the oxygen and nitrogen molecules and creates NOx gasses. The only way to avoid this is to lower temperature or pressure, both of which reduces efficiency. So this is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of situation. Either NOx, or good fuel economy. Most others solve this by adding a mixture to the exhaust or I believe also combustion. This mixture binds the NOx, and creates harmless or at least less harmful chemicals. There is so little needed that this is only refilled when doing car service. So how could VW manage to avoid this extra mixutre? Well, seems they could not. Laws of physics is a bitch sometimes. So what is the deal with NOx? They just reduced efficiency when they detected emissions testing, and that got them past that hurdle. The most dangerous NOx gas is NO2. That is where a nitrogen molecule (N2) and two oxygen molecues (O2) binds and forms two NO2 molecules. In themselves not very dangerous, but very reactive. It easily reacts with moisture in the air, ammonium, or worse, moisture in your lungs, and combines with the water molecule (H2O) which gives H2NO3. That is nitric acid, and is proper nasty stuff. In your lungs it will do serious damage, but also easily enter your cardiovascular system and cause and worsen heart and cardio deceases. More info here: www3.epa.gov/airquality/nitrogenoxides/health.html Needless to say, this is a direct health risk. In my opinion, these cars should be banned from driving in densely populated areas until they are fixed. 40X the allowed emissions of this nasty stuff should also be severely punished. Here in Norway we have some of the best incentives on EVs in the world, they are tax-free. Normal cars are often about 50% tax and 50% car price (double the US price in most cases). that makes EVs pull in a lot less money than ICEs of course. Still, I saw one scientist saying that taking one diesel car off the road reduces health and society cost by more than the reduction in car import taxes cost. Chew on that a bit. The cost of the emissions and crap from an ICE cost the society more in healthcare and other benefits to people getting sick than the original price of the car? These numbers are not verified, and with so many variables, might not ever be, but I for one, am looking forward to the results. This, by the way, was before the report from the Swedish scientists that concludes that exhaust gasses causes age-related illness like Alzheimer. We should have switched to EVs a long time ago, that is my conclusion. To elaborate on this, like Elon Musk sais, if only the oil industry and ICEs where not given tax exemptions, but taxed based on the damages done, both reduction of the workforce, but also medical bills and environmental problems they causes, EVs would be way cheaper than ICEs. It would put a whole lot of people out of a job though, but hey, they also said that abolishing slavery in England in the late 1700s would be a disaster. Only few years later the industrial revolution began. People will step up to the plate and make the world better, we just need to tax everything like we should, and not reward huge businesses just because they are huge.
+Thomas Davies It's too bad that VW took a shortcut. They should have done like the other car manufacturers. Cheating will never be rewarded. And eventually someone will find out. Until now, I kinda wanted an e-Golf as a wifey car. But after this scandal, I feel like boicotting them. Model 3 is a much better wifey car anyways!
Hilarious! When I have to drive a car other than my Model S, I usually leave it running when I park it and have to go back. The Nav system in this BMW is awful. Yes, we are spoiled by Tesla. Lack of regenerative braking is scary for the first few km.
I love the Model S and have friends who one it, and been driving it myself.. but can't compare it to a 3-series. It's a entry model BMW. Still the 3 series does much better at cornering, much lower curb weight. On windy roads the Model S wouldn't stand a chance. 2nd this diesel engine has a range of around 950km highway driving, which makes it a great candidate for the German autobahn. What's the range on a Model S cruising at 150 km/h plus anyway? If you really wanted to compare a Bmw to a tesla, would have to be like 5 series GT, or a 6-series Grand Coupe. I believe that that battery or hybrid cars are the future, and I love that Tesla is pushing the other brands to make even better cars. Btw, Model X looks awesome!
+Morten Aasheim He got this as a loaner as he said in the start of the video. It was not selected for a comparison with Model S, this was an opportunity to make a video of a ICE, and he took it. At 150kph on the autobahn I think you will get somewhere around 300km with the Model S. I will take my Model S on windy roads and compare with this 3-series any day of the week. Comparing against an M3 will be a loss, but a slim one, and again, it should rather be compared to a 7 series or S500 Merc. The Model S is a large car. A small car with decent engine will obviously not be a fair comparison.
+kodez79 Bjørn made the comparison himself, not me... The only way you can compare a Model S to a 7-series, is the weight. Well, the model S is still heavier.. ;-)
+Morten Aasheim I did take the 318d on twisty roads today. Even with M-sport package, it wasn't even close to my P85. And the P85+ or the first P85D have even stiffer suspension. Sorry to say, but the BMW rolled like a boat in the turns. I drive a lot on twisty turns between Oslo and Bergen. The Model S handles those roads very well than any other car I've used before (BMW 525d E61 included). I did also say in the video that it's not fair to compare a 3-series that cost 1/2 or 1/3 of a Model S, ddn't I? Or didn't you watch the whole video? ;) I reviewed aspects of the car that didn't depend on which price range the fossil car was at. Towards the end you see that I compare refueling time/food stop with Model S. And I also look at how the gearbox works and how the interior is. As for range. My previous diesel cars could do way over 1000 km. My record is Oslo to Bodø in one tank. That was 1200 km with my Renault Laguna 1.9 dCi. But you know what? Even though I was able to drive that far without refueling, I needed to take bahtroom breaks and food breaks. What I demonstrated towards the end of the video (if you watched it) is that eventually a fossil driver also needs to stop. While it is possible for a fossil car to do 600-1000 km without refueling, most humans need to stop at least every 300-400 km anyways.
Arnis Tarassu Yeah I know, that's why our horsepower is always lower and a lot of people are starting to put ethanol injector tanks in their cars. I'd still however question a $4.00 difference.
+Lazy Yeah, this is still a very expensive car. You can get 2-3 bimmers for the same price of a Tesla. (That's pretty much what I said in the video as well.) But when Model 3 comes out...
I know that you tried to be funny, but it didn't work out that way. In fact, the first couple of minutes of your video were quite irritating. The rest was fine, though. I hope your car will get fixed soon, and you will be able to enjoy driving again :)
+MrSomebodyPL Thank you for the feedback :) Which part did you find annoying? Was it the part where I entered the address in the GPS or the fiddling with gearbox?
+Bjørn Nyland To be honest, mainly the part where you pretended that you didn't know how to start a diesel powered car. When it comes to the voice controlled satnav, it is not that straightforward to me as well, so I can understand that you had a problem with entering your destination ;)
+Bjørn Nyland I get that, because the satnav system that BMW use in their cars doesn't seem intuitive at all. I remember that people used to laugh at Volvo and their take on satellite navigation, but I think that the German one is worse when it comes to user friendliness. Anyways, do you think that the newest BMW 3-series is a vehicle that people could be fond of?
Seems so primitive. Especially the navigation system. It's a shame tesla has no model 3 yet they could take a huge chunk of the midrange car market with the diesel gate scandal atm
+Ahmadi Arismaharto As long as people can afford a Model S, they should choose electric. The reason why Norway don't go crazy on Teslas is because Norwegians in general are very skeptical.
Bjørn Nyland of course. I don't think there would be any excuse for people who claims to care about the environment and could afford a Tesla to choose otherwise. As long as it is available in their country and the country's EV charging architecture supports it.
+Ahmadi Arismaharto Even when electric cars dominate the car market in coming decades (when the cost makes them affordable to average consumers) there will be no alternative but diesel for haulage and commercial vehicles. Batteries just don't have the energy density when it comes to hauling 50 tons of cargo 500 miles in a day. High mileage company vehicles for area managers, technicians and sales people will have to be diesel as they need the ranges and can't afford the time to charge every 250 miles. Diesel engines will also dominate maritime transport, cargo and commercial fishing for at least the next 100 years. There is also no foreseeable technological substitute for kerosene burning jet engines either.
+zoidberg444 I agree with you on most of the points, but seriously - 100 years? WTF are you talking about? Everything FF will be obsolete in the next 50 years. In 100 years we will have probably discovered how to create wormholes or teleportation.
kriss2005 Consider the fact that the petrol and diesel engines are more than 100 years old by now. They are a lot more compact, powerful and durable than 100 years ago but the underlying technology and concepts are the same. Kerosene burning jet engines have been around since the second world war in one form or another. Most of the underlying technology and principles are unchanged. The same with electronic systems. The AC power grid is a 100 year old technology, same with the induction motor. The only difference is all the fancy stuff that semi conductors and micro-controllers can do. All thanks to transistors which are a 65 year old technology.
Diesels should be banned from any car, lorrys and buses fine, cars NO. This car is also a very basic spec car and im sure you had issues when you first learnt how to use the Tesla sat nav? :) At least this car has it, i just have to read road signs.
Adam Webb The BMW had huge 19" low profile tires. They are probably runflat as well, now that you mention it. My Tesla uses 19" with more rubber. So the road noise is a lot better. I did say this many times to make my viewers sure that this is not a fair comparison because of different tires.
+Adam Webb There are plenty of people such as myself who drive 20,000-40,000 miles a year who need diesel cars. Also people who have trucks, 4x4's, vans and stuff for towing or hauling gear for work need the torque they produce. The problem is all of the idiots who buy one because they do 10,000 miles a year and think they save on fuel. When in fact your just asking for expensive problems such as DPF failure or recharging DMF failure, blocked EGR valve or turbo failure.
After the Model X being unveiled yesterday, this was the last type of video i was expecting from Bjorn. :D
Ok, I have to admit this video was not optimal. And I wasn't too prepared. The good news is that I have made a part 2 where I show some more of the good features of this BMW. It will be uploaded later tonight :)

Good frog impression at 32:00! :-)
It does seem odd going back to fossil.
Cool. I like the comparison with the Supercharger ;-)

First time I drove the F30 it was all known in 5 mins nothing complicated like the acting here. BMW is an easy car to drive and operate.
Great review.
Thanks!
Humm.. yes anybody that has regular use of an electric car will know exactly how it feels when you get back in a combustion engined car. It is exactly how you describe.. very strange feeling! Just like going back to the steam age.
Btw Bjørn. Let me know when you're in Bangkok next time. I'll let you review my M3 ;-)
318d, so is the car comes with dual motor too? :P
+adam juneau BMW 318d... So it is a 318kWh battery and dual motor! Shit, BMW is light-years ahead of Tesla, it seems...
You can write letters on that iDrive controller thats why it sometimes messed up, because you had your finger on the touchpad on top of the controller

I'm also looking for his opinion too. Many vw drivers are angry because they'll be forced to apply the emission software that may increase mpg and reduce performance.
+EinkOLED Shouldn't it decrease mpg? If it increased the engine efficiency it would be a good thing actually.

That price conversion equates to almost $6.00 a gallon. That is ri-damn-diculous. Y'all are getting screwed over in Europe.
Arnis Tarassu
Yeah I know, that's why our horsepower is always lower and a lot of people are starting to put ethanol injector tanks in their cars. I'd still however question a $4.00 difference.
+HJW018 We only have "premium" petrol in Europe though.
Another informative piece. I love BMWs but honestly Tesla has me hooked. As soon as I can afford it I'm going for the Model 3 probably.
Time to refuel full is like 2 min max for 15l. Time you need is another thing. I love el.cars but price and charge time is still no go for me.
+Lazy Yeah, this is still a very expensive car. You can get 2-3 bimmers for the same price of a Tesla. (That's pretty much what I said in the video as well.) But when Model 3 comes out...
30:20 Supercharger in back of the Car... ;) #stilicrafter
maybe you should change the mode.. Eco mode aint the best mode for overtaking, try Sport+ and it will give you the full power ;D
Which tripod /mount you use to film inside the car?
waiting for Model X review :)
+vitexdp I have to get the car first :)
How stupid is to require engine to be running to setup the navigation? Was anyone testing that car?
It was sooo funny at the beginning :D
Tesla @9:09!
MrSomebodyPL
Starting the car was easy. I had no problems with that. What I wasted a lot of time on was the navigation.
It's like you are making it extremely hard to use just because you drive a tesla now.
The 5 series weighs 1740 kg, a 3 Series is way lighter
+Andreas Lie I checked the "vognkort" on the 318d. The weight was actually 1750 kg. Same as my old 525d E61.
Thats weird.... BMW says it weighs from 1510 and up depending on engine and drivetrain Bjørn Nyland
Andreas Lie I also found that strange. But that's what I saw in the vognkort.
I see... Bjørn Nyland
+Andreas Lie A 318d weighs 1500 kg without a driver.
Seems so primitive. Especially the navigation system. It's a shame tesla has no model 3 yet they could take a huge chunk of the midrange car market with the diesel gate scandal atm
it is disturbing how most people still defend the right to consume fossil fuels for transportation. it doesn't make sense.
In 100 years we will have probably discovered how to create wormholes or teleportation.
kriss2005
Consider the fact that the petrol and diesel engines are more than 100 years old by now.
You're comparing a 318d with 136hp ($40k) to a Tesla Model S (who incidentally you're a shill for) for over $60k.
Shhiiiiiiiiiiit! :D
I wanna see you when you say SSSHHHEEEEEEIIIIIIIT
Shiiiiiieet! Nice review :)
In my case 10 minutes is maximum break time.
It is like comparing a bugatti to a tesla
32:47 :D :D :D
why is the hood so ugly? looks like cut off.
Diesels should be banned from any car, lorrys and buses fine, cars NO. This car is also a very basic spec car and im sure you had issues when you first learnt how to use the Tesla sat nav? :) At least this car has it, i just have to read road signs.
+Adam Webb As a matter of fact, I didn't have too much issues with the Tesla. It's as easy to use as a modern touch screen phone.
+Bjørn Nyland true, it does look pretty simple. damn my point is invalid then :)
+Bjørn Nyland road noise probably due to runflat tyres? BMW use them on most cars. Dunno what your Tesla uses :)
When in fact your just asking for expensive problems such as DPF failure or recharging DMF failure, blocked EGR valve or turbo failure.
you are so funny!
Oh shshshsh- -t LOL
Nice comment at the end. Ultimate driving machine? Not really! 🚀 tesla wins! Need model 3 asap! Model S is $150,000+ here
Funny!
This has to be a joke... lol
LMAO ;-)
