Hand Drill Plug w/ David Holladay | TJack Survival

- This summer, Dave and Tyler were teaching and came across a concept that we wanted to explore further. They were out in the middle of nowhere, when they came across a mullein shard that could be used for a hand drill plug.
The idea for the hand drill came from a class that they attended to create a hand-drawn plug. It was explained to Tyler, along with some others back then, that white people had lost their connection with hand drill fires because they were forced to use the bow drill instead of the hand drill.
In this video, he’s using the reverse grip technique because “it is more fluent” for him. He has a blade in his hand and is holding it up to his biceps. You get a lot of power and leverage without putting in much effort.
If you consider the overall survival situation, you want to make a fire as soon as possible. As you are strolling through the bushes, you will likely come across a shard of mullen stock or a stub of willow.
In order to run your hand drill correctly, you will require something that is straight and hard that has been cut and can be split open, as well as some natural cordage attached to the backside. You can use something similar to processed cottonwood roots or more cotton roots in their natural state.
Before using the cordage, you must smoothen it out a bit. Yucca’s leaves could be used to tie your stick together, but you can use a piece of your shirt if you have nothing else to pull it together.
Now that you've got your stick, how are you going to get the stick to work into your plug? The key is to not make your plug into a square but to make it a diamond or like a tipped-over box.
The other thing that you start to learn after you've done this trick a few times is that you can't make it a really steep angle. You’ll have to stretch it out a lot and you can't make it too deep or you end up having your stick eating your plug.

The living legend David Holladay and TJack. What can go wrong. Thank you guys not only for this video, but for everything you've ever done to connect us to Mother Earth.
They're great together.
Hey thanks for watching. I’m just lucky to have a friend and mentor like that. He’s the best kind of person.
@@Ghost_Os thanks
He's a wealth of knowledge and a gifted educator. Got to get out there and learn from you two!
I see my arm! My arm is on tv! My arm is famous!
Wow, just wow!
Like getting information from the source huh.
I loved that. Thank you
Stories like that are riveting in my mind.
@@TJackSurvival it reminds me of an old truck driver named “dink” who took the time to show me how to make cordage and what-not. He had the greatest stories and I learned more from him than I could ever learn from books/internet. My goal this winter is hand drill fire and quick tarp shelters. Thanks for passing on the knowledge.
@@webb618 that’s excellent! If I can help let me know. I get you with that old guys stories thing. So much knowledge is lost when they pass.
Thanks guys
Hey Grampaw Terry!
@@TJackSurvival great teaching brother
@@grampawterry8957 thanks. Clearly this is a majority of information from Dave.
Could we get a step by step tutorial for us slow people?
I’ll make one in the next few months.
I have a full tutorial series on my channel if you're interested! I go from gathering materials and plant ID to crafting the set to making fire. I don't cover compound spindles, however.
In the end we Win. Victory. ✌️
Excellent!
25:57 kid's a natural!
Great video as ever Tyler 👊🏻
Ya he's my budd.
@15:15, take what onto planes? I couldn't understand or hear it clearly.

Improvise.
I need a hands on demonstration. Otherwise, interesting.
I’ll make one
