Seeing as they are both luxury cars, a "road/wind noise" challenge would be sick! Just measure which one is louder in the cabin.
But wouldn’t that depend on the wheel/tires and Suspension? Since how wide the wheel is , and how much side wall a tire has for a comfortable ride, and last the suspension how soft or stiff it is , many factors :/
@@EZ_EZzzz wel, if they are running the same continental and around the same width tires, it'd be a pretty even comparison. If their goal is to build a great daily, the quieter the cabin the better.

"He brought a spoon to a gun fight" 😂😂 looks like the M5 has the common trifecta and no speedo which usually means the ABS module needs to be rebuilt. Delete the clutch delay valve while at it to make the clutch engagement quicker! Looking forward to this awesome challenge

I love this series idea. E39 m5 is one of my all time favorites. Also curious to see how that Lexus v8 does, I love the way those sound and have always wondered what kind of performance can be extracted from that engine. This is a series I'm I'm definitely stoked on. Good job guys! More of these budget battle series for sure!
For the speedo, check your front ABS sensors. Over here in the UK I've got a Rover 75 (poor man's BMW 😂), same symptom. Was my DSF ABS sensor (what would be PSF for you guys)
One wire corroded and just needed repair :)
Best part of the LS: sleeper factor. You can’t get pulled over in one going double the speed limit shooting fireworks out the moonroof. 🚗💨

Understand your connection with the LS, had mine now for 14 years & still makes me happy pulling her out of my man cave, shes been dealer maintained from day one & the thought of some numpty bending her is not good, a DUI driver that causes that better be able to run faster & further than I can. Just fitted a pair of Varex remote control silencers so now the sewing machine sound track has been relegated to history. looked at HKS supercharger but bang for buck just didnt make sense & I understand my limitations under the bonnet. Just had my first mechanical failure, rear off side ride height sensor, show me a loaded S Class with 100K plus with that reliability, few & far between. Shame, I'm on the other side of the planet, Id love to give her a no compromise paint correction/detail for you. Thank you for the post, wishing you all the best, success, health & happiness !!

I know you just started this series, but what about a cheap sports compact vs series for something ridiculous like sub 1000$ or something. I know it would certainly end up really frustrating for you guys on the mechanical side, but it would make a really entertaining show.

Concerning checking the M5's VANOS: when you hook it up to BMW's INPA software, you can monitor the target and actual cam positions. I think VANOS issues should become visible this way.
You guys HAVE to check out ALL4SWAP for the 3UZ-FE ECU “tune” (or quantum-auto in the States). 3UZ owners report significant improvements in performance.
I daily an LS430 so this series hits right at home, excited to see where it goes!

I hope so too. It's gotta be a supercharger. An ECU tune would only yield maybe 15-25 hp at best. A supercharger should add around 40-80 hp or thereabouts.

Excited to see what you do with the LS430 since I have a SC430. MeisterR coilovers and Magnaflow exhaust helped mine. Love the engine but it could use more power. Supercharger would be good but not sure internals can handle it and its a lot of $$$.
I would have loved to see them do some track times just for the fun of it.
I feel like you're going to NEED to do both the Winding Road and Comfort challenges. Part of the point of this challenge is to build sports luxury sedans, so those are really the two tests that will properly test those categories.
I've had a 2002 LS430 Ultra for 13 years. I live in Ontario and drive quick and I've actually auto crossed once with good results.
Pros- amazing low speed steering feel, great transmission shifting
Cons - '04 to '06 traction control cant be totally shut off, rear suspension geometry is not that great, not enough torque.
To make it faster, Lower the car at least 3/4" ( easy to do with air ride), max out the front caster and give the front end lots of negative camber ( I have -1.8 deg). Pump up the front tires, 38 fr, 35 rr. De-camber the rear if needed with shorter factory lower arms or add eccentric camber bolts. Dont waste your time on the exhaust. The headers are crazy restrictive. Wide open factory headers are as fast as a full factory exhaust. Aftermarket headers would add 30 hp. Left motor mount will break after some use.
Oh, and it's a sleeper. Cops never even look at you in this car.
Honestly one of the challenges needs to be something about the ride quality. If the goal is a comfy cruiser, there needs to be some part of the judging that factors that in.

I think it's interesting that 3 of the best independent UA-cam automotive channels are all located near each other in Canada/Upper Midwest. Throttle House (Toronto), Speed Academy (Toronto) and savagegeese (northern Illinois outside Chicago). Oh and The StraightPipes is also in Toronto but I don't watch that channel (sorry 😅).
Once the Toyota V8 breathes in some fresh cold air, it’ll be a totally different car. Keep the mufflers, ditch the cats. 4” intake and headers. Only thing that’ll always hold it back is the slush box, but it’ll still be quick

I've got a 96 GS300 the power button doesn't do a whole lot. I'm pretty sure it just changes the shift point but it's very subtle so you may not even notice it

I’m friends with the guy you got it from we picked up the car from Sarnia he gave us a few parts with you , struts, shift knob with boot, muffler and a few other parts he really loved that car he said he done a lot of maintenance
