After reading some other comments and re-watching, some things seem clear. There was more than one herd at the lake. The mother and calf pair were not part of either herd, and were being rejected in the efforts to join one herd. Yes, he goes against the female who was hurting him and first, chasing his Mom. Before that, he make mistake at coming back to the wrong mum...Its why ! Look how he ask others by taping his mouth "where is my mother" and all others give respons. Many people are confusing mother and agressive female. (sorry for my english)
Thanks for sharing this remarkable footage! What I saw was a mother with good instincts - patient, helpful and protective, giving the baby time to gain some strength before following the herd. She even helped push him across the water and let him learn how to get back on the bank with just enough help from her. Too bad not all human mothers are as caring.
Look closely. It’s still got its umbilical. It’s a brand new baby, very unsteady on its feet. Unlikely blind or ‘mentally defective’ as some are spouting off. Imagine being born and being expected to run with the herd five minutes later?! Also, baby elephants can take a few months to learn to use their trunks. They tend to put their faces right into the water to drink.
All elephant babies are born blind and then as time goes by their eyesight gets better, but elephant's in general have bad eyesight, they rely on their sense of smell instead.
La mère passe sa trompe sous le ventre du petit , elle ne l'ignore pas . Elle n'est pas agressive . Je souhaite que tout ira bien pour ce petit éléphant .
No the herd did not reject the baby. Sometimes too many at once cause confusion. But that doesn't mean they won't intervene to help. Those adults were only warning the baby to be careful as mommy thrust to drink. When the hippos came by distracted the herd, there goes baby in the deep. It's a learning experience. Baby hovers between the legs of the momma assures that baby is protected. 🍃I❤Elephants🍃
The baby was fine, no worries. The mom was trying to teach it to pay attention and listen to her. Something we seldom do as humans. After she risked her life to threaten two humongous hippos just because they got too close to her baby.
Personally, I believe this is a BRAND NEW-born baby.. seeing water (getting in it at least) for the first time, ALONG with mum..who must be feeling so good after a 2 yr pregnancy, and quite possibly a young mum's *1st baby?? Therefore, I think they were just enjoying the moment & a 'lesson' on slippery edges was being learned too. I believe the mum knew exactly where her herd was headed, and caught up with them. I don't think either mum or baby was 'left behind', etc. Soooo beautiful!! THANK YOU for sharing this video! 😊✌💫🐨
@@NikelaWildlife You're most welcome! Thanks again for sharing the footage! I live in Australia, so I would be so blessed to ever get to see these beautiful, wild gentle giants in their *natural environment! I'm so glad you got to. The 'hippos were hillarious'! 😂 I forgot to ask last time.. Do you know why the water pump was there? Were they draining the water away!?? Or 'adding' it, & if so..from where, etc.?? Thanks!! 😊
It was a very dry time during our visit so they were adding water to the waterholes everywhere. Sadly, that's what has to be done when wildlife movement is restricted by us humans.
@@NikelaWildlife 😟 .... That's what I suspected. It looks like central Australia, (so dry!) except with elephants. That's so amazing that they can do that, and are! Makes me think even more strongly, that it was the baby's first encounter with that waterhole, if not first waterhole ever!? 😊
well I for one would like to say thank you for posting this video and it did look like at one point the the baby was being picked on / rejected by some of the herd but mum stayed with her baby in the water and on land , your so lucky to be able to see them in the flesh it must be truly awesome 👍☺
The "mother" appears to have a hernia (the bulge in her abdomen), so she's easy to identify. This baby elephant still has a bit of the umbilicus attached, so it is very very young, basically a newborn. The baby does not nurse at all during this video, which is very atypical especially for a newborn. As others in the thread suggest, this baby may have lost its mother (which may be the dead elephant we can see in the foreground). The baby may have latched onto the herd in desperate need of a mother and food. But if there are no lactating females that are willing to take the baby, it can't survive. It looks like at least one elephant (the one with the hernia) is willing to be an allomother but isn't lactating and cannot feed the baby. At 4:23, "mom" is chased away by another female elephant, and it is this new elephant who kicks the baby away when the baby tries to attach to her. If the baby is not part of this herd, it is fairly normal for the elephants to refuse the baby, because any females who are lactating need to give that milk to their own babies, and won't be able to feed two. It's very, very rare for elephants to have more than one baby at a time. The hippos are not an actual threat. Elephants are just very aggressive about chasing away anything that might possible be a danger, whether it actually is or not.
I think the bulge is not a hernia but excess skin. Elephant pregnancies last a couple years and the skin stretches and grows out. After birth the skin slowly contracts. This occurs in most mammals, including humans.
this video reveals so much! the one thing that i did take away from this was even though the herd rejected the baby, that one elephant that was in the water with it saved its life from the herd of hippos!
First off, the baby was never stepped on. The elephant went to step off to the side and pushed the baby away so it wouldn’t be stepped on. You can project human emotions or actions onto wild animals. When the baby was in the water multiple elephants came by to help him if he wanted to get out. Then the mother came by and they played in the water, rinsing off, and the mother even protected the baby by chasing the hippos. You could see the baby is still trying to get milk from the mother and it is at the age where it’s transitioning to water as well. No one is neglecting the baby, and it’s not being abused. People get so sensitive over nothing because they treat animals as if they were humans. I’m 38 and while I keep my own kids close to me, likely too close, I remember my mother giving me way more space… they are wild animals
I must've missed it!! All I saw was the poor tiny baby get stepped on. And none of the herd helping or even attempting to help mom and her baby, and the herd just walking away to leave mom to fend off hippos and get her baby outta the water to safety. The herd going one way and mom and her baby the other way.
You are wrong, the mother of the baby was getting pushed away from one in the heard. The little baby did his baby things in the water and wasnt noticing that. The one elephant out of the heard was chasing the mother around you see it when everyone was thinking they hunt the hippos, they did not hunt the hippos the elephant out of the heard was chasing the mother. The baby than tried to find his mother in the heard and was rejected. Seems like the mother tried to join the heard very slow and carefully but they had no interest for some reason.
It looks like the mother and baby are not part of that herd, hence the defensive reaction when they encounter the baby. The mother is definitely taking care of her baby. Bless the little cutie. 🥰
@@NikelaWildlife Just my take as I've watched the HERD channel where I've seen the 'Allo' mothers all take care of the cutest little orphaned elephant. The Mother is right there & is definitely keeping watch & helping. She is really tall & that baby so small. She even stood at angles where she looked like she was lowering her body so the baby could suckle (unfortunately it looks as if it can't). Other than that, I also agree w/the poster above about herds meeting & getting lost. I'm also in agreement w/you about Ellies not being aggressive except the bulls at times. At 08:06 you also see another Ellie try to help get the wee one out of the water. How amazing you got to see this!!! It's on my bucket list💕✌
Completely misleading title of the video! If the calf was rejected it would not be allowed to walk with the herd or to suckle and it would be treated in a violent way, meaning stomped or attacked with tusks until it leaves the herd. Here the herd even helped the calf repeatedly to go back on its feet. There is a documentary "Fight for survival - Africa wildlife documentary" in which a calf is REALLY rejected. It got lost from its original herd and was attacked by other elephants whenever it was looking for company. At the end of the day it was eaten alive by hyenas while a lot of adult elephants were just watching. Not one of them tried to help the calf!
I saw in a different documentary several years ago (I don't remember the name), where a herd of African elephants actually adopted a baby male that they found abandoned. The new herd had tried to ignore him, but at the end couldn't resist his crying. In the documentary you saw, I wonder if there was something wrong with the calf. That could be why it was abandoned or lost in the first place, and no other elephants intervened.
Sorry you see it that way. We saw the herd that mother and tiny had come in with leave without them. Plus there was this strange interaction at the waterhole where the whole herd seemed to chase the little one off.
Notice when the herd walks, the babies are usually in the middle surrounded by the large ones to protect them, but the tiny runt was left outside the herd often and running trying hard to keep up. They seemed to ignore this baby, but not the larger baby who would likely be less of a liability/ burden. It's sad to see when there's no compassion even for one's own young b/c everyone's selfishly thinking of themselves and what's easier for them (humans do the same).
Looks to me like she recently gave birth and is very thirty. Baby is still wobbly in legs but learning fast... thank you for sharing your wonderful experience.
There's a strong possibility that it belonged to a different herd, got lost and tried attaching to this herd. Elephants are often reluctant to adopt a lost newborn calf, despite having a reputation to do so, especially if they're already nursing calves of their own or if they're having trouble producing milk, due to a lack of food. I don't believe that the so called "mother" is actually the elephant calf's real mother because it doesn't even look like she's producing milk. You can clearly tell when a mother elephant is producing milk. I think this calf just attached itself to this elephant.
When it looked like the herd was chasing him, they were herding him away from the hippos, which are very territorial and a serious threat to that curious young fellow. Other than the hippo, that’s the safest place for them to be while he gains balance and strength. If the lions show up, there’s plenty of carnage lying around they won’t even have to hunt for!
Poor Baby. I hope it survived the abuse by the herd and the ignorance of the mother. Poor baby looked exhausted and hungry. Prob one of the reasons it kept drinking that muddy water to fill up ❤❤🐘 ❤❤
Mom is always there by the baby taking good care of her, mom is protecting and nursing baby so I don't see any rejection, baby seems kind of weak but it's probably because is a newborn.
Thank goodness for such a loving caring mama, and a very protective mama at that towards the hippos. It breaks my heart that none of the other elephants came to the mama and babys rescue. And I'm glad mama and her precious beautiful tiny baby went their separate way. 🐘🐘♥️
This was so stressful to watch! I was afraid the baby was going to drown and then I was afraid the hippos were going to get it. Mom was not very helpful through the whole thing. I'm stressed out now. Whew.
Animals know what they are doing..I think at times moms practice tough love, which is essential to push the baby to be more independent for survival. And the baby elephant never got stepped on, like the narrator said. That was a bit dramatic.
That is not the mother and calf's herd. You can tell they came from a different direction not to mention their less than friendly interactions. They just happened to meet at the waterhole. Sadly it seems the mother and calf are all alone. Hopefully her herd is still around somewhere. The calf looks very young, can't be more than a day or two old
The title question cannot be answered. As the herd approaches the watering hole take note that there is a small elephant already dead at the waterhole. The carcass is being eaten by birds (1:45). The relatively uneaten carcass suggests there are no predators (lions, etc.) in the area as the elephant has not died from a kill but rather likely from sickness. The herd takes in this information as a reminder: the herd must survive even at the expense of one (or two.) Some commenters suggest Momma kicked her baby (4:50), she did not. Momma used her rear left leg to guide her newborn over a depression in the land but the baby fell. Momma momentarily became excited and a bit disoriented. The Matriarch came over to give a stern warning to the newborn (and perhaps to Momma) to get with the program; recall that two rather active hippos are now at the watering hole. About a minute later you see the same Matriarch and Momma working together to chase the hippos away. While Momma may be inexperienced, Momma demonstrates her love for her calf AND her strength when she later defends (by herself) against the same two relentless hippos (beginning at 12:00) one of whom is MASSIVE. These are all appropriate elephant behaviors. As for the herd: it is possible Momma is NOT from this herd as her baby appears to be a late term birth relative in size to the two other calves. Her origin herd may have earlier moved on while Momma was birthing. Late in the season a herd needs to stay on their migration timeline even if it means one must be left behind. Again, the herd cannot be sacrificed for the one, thus the herd is not going to risk itself for [a non-related?] Momma and her calf. Lastly, this newborn could already be sick or afflicted and the herd KNOWS it although in my opinion the newborn is exhibiting good strength and decent skills. While the herd moved on for the day it is possible they will return to the watering hole tomorrow and Momma can attempt to rejoin. If not, as apparently several herds are visiting the watering hole, Momma can try to join another herd when baby is a bit stronger.
@@NikelaWildlife While your comment is true it is a question that cannot be answered given the limited amount of information provided by this video. Perhaps someday you will post Part 2 and then I can answer?
What attitude is that? We shared what we experienced and welcome feedback. The truly knowledgeable have no need to be rude... at least, that has been our experience over the years.
There's still a bit of umbilical cord dangling off its belly. I think it's a newborn still unsteady on its legs, never been to a waterhole before and hasn't got a clue about anything.
I think she is a first time Mother. She doesn't seem to know what to do with her tiny baby. She doesn't stand still long enough for her tiny baby to nurse. Tiny babies like this need to nurse lots to be strong enough to follow the herding hope she stays with the herd for protection from rhinos and lions. Hope this sweet baby gets big and strong.
The baby is days old. See the remains of his umbilical cord. That is why he walks funny like his back legs are stiff. This baby Ellie loves the water and his mum was indulging him. No fear of drowning. He is a head strong calf and will no doubt get some discipline not just from mum but his herd family. And yes the others moved on having their fill of the water, probably to browse for food. If mum is wise she will soon catch up with the herd for safety sake.
No,you completely missed the point. The mother was the dead elephant we saw at the start that the birds were feasting on. That baby elephant has no chance as it needs it's mother's milk and as she's dead so is the baby. The other elephants won't be producing any milk and the baby doesn't have a chance without milk. It's days old and can't eat vegetation. Even if the other elephants want to help without milk it's a goner. It's following the other elephant ( possibly an aunt ) who obviously wants to adopt and look after the baby but unfortunately she won't be able to feed it. The only chance the baby has is if another elephant has recently given birth and is lactating and let's the baby suckle,so the chances of it's survival really are minimal
The herd protected that baby. The one time that little one was alone at some distance, the entire herd moved to surround him. Otherwise, there was always an adult escort. When the hippos got too close, the adult chased them off, then scurried after the baby. When the baby slipped in the mud, the adult helped the little one regain footing. I would have been happier to see the baby nursing. Obviously it has been feeding because it had the energy to keep moving with the herd.
I would say that the mother and her calf had become separated from their family. Notice at the beginning of the film that they were separate to the arriving elephant family and that they did not leave with any family. Without the support structure of her immediate family the mother would have been stressed which would have greatly reduced her milk production. As a result the calf looks somewhat malnourished and is attempting to fill its belly with its attempts to drink water. The mother has an obvious abdominal hernia. That and her obvious affection for the calf, indicates to me that she is definitely the mother of this calf.
Please read and learn about Elephant behavior. You sound foolish with your remarks. The elephants were trying to protect the baby elephant, because as you noticed there were hippos around and hippo’s are aggressive, especially a mother with her baby hippo. Elephants are extremely protective of their young as well as each other!❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️

Tari Akpodiete actually baby elephants can’t even drink water yet. They rely 100% on moms milk
Impalas, wildebeest aka gnu, buffalo and a bunch of other animals are expected to run with the herd at birth.
Jeff somersby LoL! How in god’s name do people like you end up commenting?
I love all animals and i love Elephant so much.. ❤🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❤❤❤🙏🙏

Thanks!
The baby elephant swims very well. Mum really loves her baby!!
For the most part, elephants are really just gentle giants.
Mom & her 🍼 baby are a wonderful love & life story .
That’s beautifully put!
The baby was fine, no worries. The mom was trying to teach it to pay attention and listen to her. Something we seldom do as humans. After she risked her life to threaten two humongous hippos just because they got too close to her baby.
Beautiful.
Why did the younger ele close to the beginning go after the little baby...and the Mom? That was one sassy teen elephant!
Oh thank God!!!

Thank you very much for this beautiful video! I’ve enjoyed it immensely. I’d like to see this little thing bigger and stronger! 🐘🥰
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. We wish we could go back and see this tiny one again too... all growing up with mum.
To cute for words! Love this!!!!
So cute little one baby elephan god bless you all family daling be save with mom darling ❤

Thanks for your comment.
@@NikelaWildlife You're most welcome! Thanks again for sharing the footage! I live in Australia, so I would be so blessed to ever get to see these beautiful, wild gentle giants in their *natural environment! I'm so glad you got to. The 'hippos were hillarious'! 😂
I forgot to ask last time..
Thanks Sarah. 'In the flesh' is always best. Though glad you enjoyed it. Like many others its the only way you get a taste for the wild things.

She gave them a chance too didn’t she?
Poor baby.. May God bless these beautiful innocent animals 🐘💔❤️🙏🙏🙏
What a cute baby! Very small and young!
Sehr lehrreich, danke ❤
I think the bulge is not a hernia but excess skin. Elephant pregnancies last a couple years and the skin stretches and grows out. After birth the skin slowly contracts. This occurs in most mammals, including humans.
the water pump sound is still better than some added music
So so true. My thought every time
I agree
Agreed completely 👍

I think mumma was trying to teach her baby to follow close, but not that close. The baby was getting entangled in her legs. She's a lovely mumma. :)
this video reveals so much! the one thing that i did take away from this was even though the herd rejected the baby, that one elephant that was in the water with it saved its life from the herd of hippos!
Was quite the scenario to watch unfold
Poor baby,,very inteligente and abandoned,God bless you baby orfan
Thanks for commenting
Nice one. 😊☘️🇮🇪
4:20 aww the little baby was blowing bubbles in the water 😭😭😭 it's so sweet
Beautiful work mommy ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It looks like the mother and baby are not part of that herd, hence the defensive reaction when they encounter the baby. The mother is definitely taking care of her baby. Bless the little cutie. 🥰
Thanks
Thanks for your feedback @misanthrop we just called it as we saw it. No misleading intended at all.
NikelaWildlife okay, nevermind...
I agree. I see no "rejection" going on here at all. Totally misleading clickbait title. Dishonest!
Sorry you see it that way. We saw the herd that mother and tiny had come in with leave without them. Plus there was this strange interaction at the waterhole where the whole herd seemed to chase the little one off.
Sweet baby
Definitely!
I think you are misreading the situation entirely.
January 24, 2019: Without animals, the earth would be completely intolerable.
Agreed! Actually when nature gets too far out of balance we all suffer.
I know right!? Hamburgers wouldn't exist!!
Without humans, animals would flourish.
Humans are animals, we’re evolving primates.
Man is the greatest enemy of nature!
thats so sweet and so precious. the elephant is majestic, powerful, strong and meek. awesome animal
Looks to me like she recently gave birth and is very thirty. Baby is still wobbly in legs but learning fast... thank you for sharing your wonderful experience.
Thanks for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed it. Was fascinating in real life.
There was no rejection, the mother just must be new and inexperienced.
Gaming Central 2020 uhh ok
True, no rejection because the herd was very protective generally.
no rejection, the baby want someone teach how live in the group. and the mother just learn how to take care the baby.
Right
We could learn so much from these..she looks a very proud mother
Many babies and young ones in this herd!😍👍
There's a strong possibility that it belonged to a different herd, got lost and tried attaching to this herd. Elephants are often reluctant to adopt a lost newborn calf, despite having a reputation to do so, especially if they're already nursing calves of their own or if they're having trouble producing milk, due to a lack of food. I don't believe that the so called "mother" is actually the elephant calf's real mother because it doesn't even look like she's producing milk. You can clearly tell when a mother elephant is producing milk. I think this calf just attached itself to this elephant.
Interesting! Thanks
The baby tried to nurse several times.
I saw this b 4. At the end mum helps calf& let it suckle.
Mum needs 2 let baby nurse.
Thank you for sharing this.
You’re welcome. Was quite something to watch in real life.
Thanks for this.
A very protective mom over that cute dumbo
Jumbo 👀
The bullies called him Dumbo
Elephants are highly intelligent and protect their young at all costs. I love ‘em. Thanks for the video.
Poor Baby. I hope it survived the abuse by the herd and the ignorance of the mother. Poor baby looked exhausted and hungry. Prob one of the reasons it kept drinking that muddy water to fill up ❤❤🐘 ❤❤
Maybe!
I disagree
tough love also takes place in the wild still despite it being a non-option with today's oversensitive cry babies!
Mom is always there by the baby taking good care of her, mom is protecting and nursing baby so I don't see any rejection, baby seems kind of weak but it's probably because is a newborn.
Thanks for commenting
Seems baby disoriented, turning back toward deep water. So new & mother & calf need protection of their herd. I stressed watching the vulnerability
Thank goodness for such a loving caring mama, and a very protective mama at that towards the hippos. It breaks my heart that none of the other elephants came to the mama and babys rescue. And I'm glad mama and her precious beautiful tiny baby went their separate way. 🐘🐘♥️
They gonna be easy prey and that baby elephant gonna be eaten soon
The baby needs the herd. Neo zeon is right…mom alone cannot protect baby from predators, they need the herds protection
That baby wouldn’t have survived with just mom
The baby is tiny & cute.
God bless them all thank you Jesus and praying for the babies
Very nice video thank you 👌
the baby is so cute
Oh only hope that the baby is going to be ok and cared for.😯❤👌
This mother is disturbed I just pray for the baby. Only the strong survive. Philadelphia USA
I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ELEPHANTS REJECTING AN INFANT. THEY USUALLY ARE SO PROTECTIVE OF THEM.
Yup! That’s what made this so strange for us too
This was so stressful to watch!
Beautiful mom helping her baby
Was neat.
That is not the mother and calf's herd. You can tell they came from a different direction not to mention their less than friendly interactions. They just happened to meet at the waterhole. Sadly it seems the mother and calf are all alone. Hopefully her herd is still around somewhere. The calf looks very young, can't be more than a day or two old
L
Sweet.
That female elephant is not lactating
@@calgal5752 Yes she is
The title question cannot be answered.
The question was about the herd... not the mum
@@NikelaWildlife While your comment is true it is a question that cannot be answered given the limited amount of information provided by this video. Perhaps someday you will post Part 2 and then I can answer?

cute small elephant-he explores so nicely with his long.....just above water
There's still a bit of umbilical cord dangling off its belly. I think it's a newborn still unsteady on its legs, never been to a waterhole before and hasn't got a clue about anything.
Excellent footage... thank you so much 😊😍
The mum DID NOT reject her baby; she seems to really love her baby a lot especially when she pushes the hippos awayWITH her tusk.9
The question has nothing to do with mum rejecting... it’s the herd that acted strangely.
Amazing baby elephant
She did get her baby out of the water. Hurts my heart to see this precious little guy trying to keep up, he's so little compared to the adults.
Definitely a tiny one. Sure gutsy though.
Hope this sweet baby gets big and strong.

baby having fun in the water with mum
That's motherly love. Good mama
Thank you for sharing this video. And special thanks for not adding music!
Thank you for that feedback. We try to share how we experienced it.

God bless all babies! Did someone continue to watch over this baby to make sure it was okay and fed?
Thanks for caring. There was a ranger present. We were told mum and tiny would probably meet up with the herd later. Was a relief for us too
My heart was beating so hard! I was worried about that precious baby!❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘
Mom is a bit clueless, but is allowing the calf to nurse. Their bond will grow stronger over time.
Good carrying mother elephant for her baby❤
The herd protected that baby. The one time that little one was alone at some distance, the entire herd moved to surround him. Otherwise, there was always an adult escort. When the hippos got too close, the adult chased them off, then scurried after the baby. When the baby slipped in the mud, the adult helped the little one regain footing. I would have been happier to see the baby nursing. Obviously it has been feeding because it had the energy to keep moving with the herd.
Thanks
The baby tried nurse in some parts of video. It is a newborn and I don't think that it is being rejected. The herd is nervous but we don't know why.
Thanks for your insights.
Happy journey mom baby elephant
Please read and learn about Elephant behavior. You sound foolish with your remarks. The elephants were trying to protect the baby elephant, because as you noticed there were hippos around and hippo’s are aggressive, especially a mother with her baby hippo. Elephants are extremely protective of their young as well as each other!❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️
