It's so clear how much more emotional elephants are... So sweet how she was running around looking for them, and how happy she was she found them...
Also how happy see was when she was trying to kill the calf
@@parthasarathykhiriya that is what i thought....if those buffalo are so valuable, why are they letting her kill bulls and babies? that just doesn't make sense. Crate her and get her out of there and slowly introduce to a herd of her own kind.
@@bevfrench3496we already see consequences of killing of bull elephants on younger males. Who knows what killing cape buffalo bulls are going to do.
@@bevfrench3496 she protects the human and saved his life. so in return she keeps him safe and he keeps her there.
Nzou's story : She was an orphan in the 1970's and they had no elephants in the sanctuary. She was surprisingly adopted by a herd of buffalo the did have. Since that time she has become the herd's leader and protector. There is now an elephant herd in the sanctuary and though they try to interact with her she wants nothing to do with them. She is happy with her buffalo family, and loves to lead and protect them. The youngsters in the herd are 5th generation! So you could say she was also a very GREAT grandmother.
in the doc, they say that she hasnt seen another elephant in 15 years. I was going to say, this is a great set up, but i wonder if it would be best for her if she was with other elephants. If its true there is another heard on the reserve and she wasnt interested in interacting with them. Then for sure i would leave her there. That still seems like a crapy set up for those bulls though.

Great Story.Thank You.❤❤❤❤❤
She also needs another elephant companion even though she leads the buffalos herd.

It's well known Elephants are extremely family orientated staying together beyond death. My heart fills with grief and concern for her...she needs her own kind she needs to be an Elephant!
There are other elephants but she chooses to be with the buffaloes.
She identifies as a buffalo. Her pronouns are moo/cow 😁
She’s been fine all these years, it would cause her more grief to be wrenched away from this family.
Lies, she can be with elephants

Nzou should have been sent straight to an elephant sanctuary when she was a baby. It sounds as though her needs for social structure and contact have never been fully met, despite the most loving intentions of her caregivers.
DSWT would have been so perfect for her, I agree totally!
spiralrose I absolutely agree. She needs to be amongst her own kind. She needs a baby of her own.
@@jacksprat429 I never was able to have a child, everyone copes😉
Hello Sweetheart I am sorry to hear that, and yes, everyone copes. I appreciate that. However, we are speaking about a wild animal, who is not with her own kind. That should at least be the ultimate goal, to get her to a sanctuary with her own species. It is not even about her not having a baby of her own, but blending in with an elephant herd, not a buffalo herd.
hse needs elephants for sure
At first i wanted her to be re wilded, but she seems very happy, loved and cared for, she has a great life!
Awwwww 😔
I'm dying inside watching this beautiful elephant's affection being rejected 😔 🐘 ❤
Znou needs her own family that will touch her back. She needs emotional friends just like her
What a remarkable story! I was surprised that she didn't trumpet when she found the herd again. It's like she just came in like a nurturing mom with no fanfare. So great that the owner takes in all animals. Really fantastic that there are people who don't work for their own benefit but for the benefit of others. Wow, she killed that many bulls?!
Fun Facts:
Elephants and buffalos are among two large mammals on land who had great memory/high intelligence by remembering even a dark past that affected them emotionally (i.g: for losing their close members of the herd) as they will never forget something that damages their lives and as a matter of fact, both animals have proven to be great to amazing parents at best regarding their parental care to their young as they are the best mothers in the natural world.
And the moral of the story: Both of them will never forget something!
Nah Buffaloes are dumb as hell! Elephants are hella smart I'll give u that! But African Buffaloes is super dumb lol
This is a sad documentary.. Nzou need to be with the herd elephants. She need elephants families that will protect her from predators.
I agree with you.
I agree too. She has killed 15 male buffalo, a few babies, and longs for touch, something the buffalo do not do.
Elephants can also die from broken hearts :(
Elephants have no predators besides humans
@Not interested to tell my name a 6000 pund elephant can easily kill a 420 pound lion
I love how she loses her herd then frantically finds them and gets her daily Lovins all over again ❤️
she can't have her own cub, so sometime she kill the buffalo cub. she can't get any male (elephant) so she kill the male bull.

Nzou is the elephant version of the crazy cat lady.

Lmaooooo!!!
Aweee 😂
Jaaaaaaaaaa
why would they not just put her with some elephants so she can have friends? This is so sad. Also how did it take them 15 dead bulls to realize they should keep them apart?
Elephants have to learn how to socialize, a lot like how we have to. Nzou also might not even be able to speak her own language either, and it'll be very hard to learn it at 26 years.
Don't forget she killed 4 calf's too. There is no other elephant like her in the world that's why. I was thinking about getting a pet elephant, I changed my mind
I think they are experimenting... why else would they not put her with her own kind.....
It seems like a lot of "BULL" to me ...

From the comments you realize that it takes some people watching over 1 documentary to become an expert in elephants, amazing!
I LOVE NZOU and pray she gets to an ELEPHANT SANCTUARY LIKE THE ONE LEK HAS IN THAILAND. Surely there are some in AFRICA.
2dasimmons you sound ignorant as fuck. Africa is a content. Imagine not an elephant sanctuary in a whole continent? The one that built pyramids
Monsieur LaFlamme ,well how many have we black Africans set up? The pyramids were built by the Arabs and are only found in North Africa and not throughout Africa.
Sam Warmate you also sound ignorant sir. I live in South Africa and know about 8 elephant sanctuaries in my country yet we also have the famous Kruger national park where we let a lot of wild animals roam free something you wouldn’t understand because you love western culture clearly !!!

Nzou needs to become a mother herself, perhaps she is jealous
It’s instinctual there are no male elephants in an elephant herd!
I also spontaneously thought about jealousy
@@jgg59 😞😕👁😜🤑😝😝🤐🗯😯😪😪
That's what I'm thinking. It might have something to do with her never mating and having young of her own and this whole situation has thrown off her natural instincts and causing her to kill young buffalo that aren't excepting of her by their own instincts
John Gerard Griffith yeah the no males thing makes sense. The killing of the other calves doesn’t really make sense though. In full elephant herds, mothers are usually very tolerant of other mother’s calves.
poor elephant.. such social animals
This is a nice documentary. It was quite different to see an elephant living with buffalo family and there is nothing to say against it if that is what the elephant wants.
Cute and tragic at the same time
Very Beautifully documented. Please move the elephant to her crowd so that she can also live happily..
Lol, find this elephant a elephant herd
1SuperLOL
I agree
Why is this elephant on her own, without her own kind?
What is going to happen when her career ( he is the only one that can get near her when she needs to be controlled?) dies???
Are you from Australia because I’m Australian!
Nothing about the Elephant and buffalo's lives make any sense except the situation probably makes money and a little notoriety for the sanctuary/ranch owner. Well that's the way I see it.
Exactly.
Not sure about that, perhaps they would make more money with the increased successful reproduction rate if she wasn't their killing bills and calves. I think we know why the younger buffalo don't like her as much as the older ones. I wonder if it bothers her that the calves are not recognizing her as the leader rather than their mother or perhaps it's only the male calves being killed.
Wow! Truly miraculous! I click these alerts immediately, such entertainment & teaching & wildlife appreciation ♥️ Morimbiwa is an angel 🙌😇
That was such an awesome documentary. I love elephants and it was so precious to learn about buffalos too. Tnank YOU!!!
Give her mirror so she can see herself lol
Yes she should of been put with her own kind... EXSPECIALLY since she desires touch an companship/family.
It's an ODDLY WONDERFUL STORY. I Really enjoyed it.
i’ll bet if Znou were to have her own calf, she would not only not attack her calf but she would also stop attacking the buffalo calves. She may attack the buffalo calves because she’s jealous she cannot have her own offspring.
*Nzou
I was thinking the same thing. Poor girl just wants her own baby 😢
Fully agree
good point
Or maybe she would attack and kill her own calf, because she has no idea how to be an elephant, and would have no idea what that creature is.
"Sir, the elephant has just killed our 13th bull, what do you want us to do?"
"Throw the 14th in there. I think she's starting to come around."
She actually did it after her 150th kills, we all cry out that day and gave thanks to mother earth and to Greta Thunberg for this, we did it for the planet and one day we will succeed
For cape buffalos, elephants are by far their closest and great allies in the wild, as well as good buddies that respect each other !🐃🐘
Not really. They don't interact on friendly terms at all in the wild. Even here, you heard that Nzou killed 15 prize Buffalo bulls.
Please keep Nzou safe!!!
Better still bring her to an elephant sanctuary where she can be amongst her own. Let her be with an elephant family.
😆❤️lmao i can't stop lmao she's so funny! I'm not even 8minutes in yet lmao she cracks me up! This girl is hilarious lmao😆❤️👊 I love her!!!smh😆lol
*She'd blend best with her own kind, a herd of elephants. They'd likely stop all that aggression she displays towards any buffalo but the female. A herd of elephants would never tolerate that behavior unless she was their matriarch and that's not likely. I hope one day she does get to go be with her own kind, it hurts my heart that she's not with em now. The idea that she may not know she's an elephant would go out the window immediately if she ever we're to meet just one other elephant. Aww what i wouldn't give to witness that❤️😲
As sweet and caring as this man is to her and as tolerant as the buffalo are, she needs elephants💔😞 she needs a herd I think.
By far, this was one of the most interesting documentaries about an elephant!
Poor thing, she really does not know how to be an elephant, and she is failing at how to be a rhinoceros!...
Funny and sad at the same time.
According to the Imire Black Rhino and Wildlife Conservation area, they did try putting Nzou with other elephants. (I don't know why this documentary said that she'd never seen another elephant; maybe they suspect the game reserve lied about it?) It's not as simple as just dropping Nzou off at an elephant sanctuary, though. The Wildlife Conservation area said they attempted several times to encourage Nzou to become part of their elephant herd, but she would not respond to the other elephants in Imire at all, likely because she no longer understood what they were saying. She is content with the buffalo herd and, as long as they accept her as a leader, she is happy to be their matriarch. Obviously the situation isn't ideal for Nzou or the herd, but I'm not sure there is a better option for her after decades with her buffalo family. Like they mentioned in the doc, allowing her to become pregnant could also be fatal; she's never learned how elephants mate, gestate, or raise a calf.
This is an article about it from 2014:
Elephant who thinks she's a buffalo- joins herd from different species

This is such an incredible story! Thanks so much for sharing this!

They need to let the other elephants socialize with her.
Wow! Truly miraculous! I click these alerts immediatel
I'm confused why keep the elephant if it's killing many buffalo?
I think the narrator said something about how it's their leader and protector and it's too late to separate them. But it's nagging me that this herd doesn't need protection in this protected ranch, and if they got rid of the elephant an older female buffalo or the bulls being penned up now could join them and lead the herd around just as well. I would hope it's still possible to have the elephant adopted by it's own kind and have a better life. This arrangement doesn't seem to add up as being the only way to go forward...
Because she plays a vital role in protecting the man responsible for tending to the buffalo, they said as much.
1.) She protects the man in charge of the buffalo from the buffalo themselves, very dangerous animals. He needs to be there as well because poachers have snuck onto ranches like these before.
2.) Nzou has no social skills, most of the behaviors elephants express are learned behaviors, especially when it comes to socializing. She also would probably not be able to communicate, as elephants have their own language which is used very similarly to ours.
3.) They're doing fine as is.
The killer / bodyguard elephant for the herd then dew to it being a desease free herd - they're a prized herd....and being that the killer bodyguard elephant will only calm down by the command's of the brother-man , because killer bodyguard go way back ....and yah know elephants have a heck of a memory ~ loyalty .....but it all comes down to (Buffalo'$) with this video . Made to sound like a documentary 👌😂😂🤐😎.
Would you rather have the elephant dead!!!!😲😮😧😦😯😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

This elephant should have beer introduced to a herd long ago. An injustice seems to be done here.
@@elijahvargas6338 You're ignorant. Sandra is right. Do some research.
The whole affair is total bull.
Jose Cuervo (1795) , much better then beer.
Especially when I notice being chained up, the elephant is to suit their purposes and their needs, who knows that maybe the reason why they have the elephant in the first place. It's said time and again Nzou is to important. This situation is totally business, it's nothing like being taken in giving a animal a home and allowing that animal if it chooses to live amongst its own kind. They do not have Nzou best interests. Keeping her from her kind is not good for her, I have a feeling Nzou's life will end when there's no need for her anymore. I hope not.
Perhaps you should have taken up roots, and gone over there to show the experts how it needs to be done... I AM sure all nationals from the area would stop and listen to your opinions, on how they went wrong...
What an absolutely lovely story. So unique and so special. Bless

Lol sounds like you're talking about death by elephant
Here in india elephants are domesticated each temple in kerela have more than 10 to 100 in their wings
I wonder about the kindness of the buffalos. Humans always dream how they suffer other
humans and innocent animals. But they never dream how to erradicate the traditional deadly enemies of the innocent animals . Lions, different cats, crocodiles, snakes eagles and other carniverous wild animals are their fierce enemies. .......................................
How pleasant it is to see the calves and their parents live without fear..!
__________________________________________________________________________________
I hate Humans as well as crocodiles , many different cats and snakes.
.......I AM ERITREAN......
That is amazing how animals will except anyone as family. We People of the world could take lessons
My uneducated opinion as to why the elephant sometimes kills calves is that she knows she herself is the leader and yet she has no progeny, and I think there is something in her that senses in a very vague way that it's wrong for the others of the herd to be able to calf before/and more often than herself, and I believe that how she interprets the "wrongness" of that is the catalyst for her instinct to destroy them on occasion. I think if she were allowed to have a baby it would stop. I think she is just trying to interpret and correct what she cannot help but feel is disorder.
Awe, they need to take her to either an elephant sanctuary or even a baby elephant sanctuary so she can help raise the babies. Poor girl... she needs her own kind. 😢💔
"Game Reserve"..These animals are hunted for sport. They forgot to mention that.
Sickening.
NO, that is not what 'Game Reserve' means here. There are so many 'Game Reserves' to PROTECT species and do not allow Canned Hunting. All the while, it is NOT right to chain her, ride them, or keep her from her species either...still some sort of injustice being done here regardless. Blessings!
That's horrid
I hope they don't do that. That would be disgusting.

Hello from India 🇮🇳, Congrats 👌👍
it's a very unique and sad social structure for this buffalo-elephant, it would be great if she could be with her normal herd but to separate them now would be even more cruel, I'd imagine she would die from the loneliness. She has her herd and it appears that all have adapted so that the farmer, the elephant, the buffalo and surrounding community benefit from this sad but kind of necessary situation.
Awesome animal documentary! I was very nervous that the female elephant was going to kill the baby buffaloes again. It was such a huge relief that she did not do so this time.
Unite the elephant with an another elephant herd . I think the ranch has it to get visitors over ? But killing of prized Bulls .. cost that does not add up .
There is absolutely no reason that Nzou must stay with the buffalo, it's cruel.
there are other elephants in the park now, they have tried to approach her too, but Nzou won't have anything to do with them. After several failed attempts over the years to encourage her to become part of an elephant herd, conservancy managers decided to let her stay with the buffalo. Its her choice, they can't force her to be social with other elephants or make her join a herd, and there are other elephant herds around she is free to join anytime if she wanted to, she has made it clear in previous attempts she doesn't, whether its ideal or not -she sees the buffalo as her herd and family now, and that's it.
She is happy where she was , if she was not feel right , she would walk out long time ago , as long as she feel happy and comfortable ❤

Elephants are one of God's greatest creations.
Elephants are very intelligent and she would know that she is not allowed to have babies. She is jealous, thats why she would kill out the young ones. That is unfair to her. Selfish people and cruelty to the elephant. Where are those in authority? The persons who videoed this doc all of them needs to be fined.
This is just cruel. Both for the elephant and the buffalo.

Nzou should be around other elephants. It's better than being alone, but they don't speak Elephant. That must be hard.
For some reason this story is different for all the wrong reasons. I've seen other videos of odd couples and the owners seen to care in ways I can't complain about, when I finish watching the story makes me feel good about what I see humans are doing, but not this one especially when I saw the chain on her foot.
Also, water buffalo are awesome, an elephant running the crew is actually a shitty thing for a buffalo group imo. Reason being, elephants live a long time and I guess dont relinquish leadership easily. Buffalo? Well they have the best system in nature imo. Big badassiest buffalo looks after the herd, takes watch, guides them to feeding grounds, deters predators, watches whilest they sleep and when they get tired? Nope they dont get torn to pieces by a younger competitor (learn something lions), the badass wanders off for the fecking holiday. That's right. They go on holiday. They wander off alone, scaring off entire prides of lions from watering holes to have a swim and a drink and chillax until they decide goddam when they are bored of it, and then, only then, do they just slowly mosey on back to the herd, and guess what, just join right back in as a normal buffalo under the new leader until they break and decide to take a holiday. People say nature is cruel, and 99% of time it is, but the buffalo, man they got this shit figured out way better than we do.
At this point it may not be possible to integrate her with a normal herd. If it is tried it would require a specialized sanctuary that can start introducing her through heavy fences. It would take a long time to teach her how to be as normal an elephant as possible & integrate her into a herd.
This game park is in my back yard I hope more will be done to protect it upstream. I have noted some changes especially on the rural side and more involvement and education with the locals is needed in terms of water and tree planting and retention in order to protect the water sources. Hopefully relations are built that are beneficial to the locals so they see the value of this park. Its a beautiful place I must admit.
