Thanks for watching. This generator is practically new but it has a very strange problem. The problem is that it runs perfectly fine in choke but not at all, off choke. The problem was related to the carburetor of course but its something I've never seen before.

That nozzle as you called it, is known as the high speed jet. In this video, the guy should have cleaned all routes within the carb, not just the high speed jet. There was no mention about the low speed jet that's in every carb on the market. They need cleaning as well, and might as well do it the same time you clean the high speed one, so you don't get surging in engine.

@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Just a follow up. I was able to do this procedure this morning. It worked!!! Reason I'm excited about this fix is I'm in Texas and you probably heard about the problems we've all had here with the freeze. Our power went out during the rolling outages from the power company, then a water pipe busted (luckily in a exterior wall and not in the ceiling). I had started my generator just about a month earlier but with temps in the low 20s, with no lights, heat, or water.... OF COURSE, when I needed it the most, had no luck starting it. Pretty sure I flooded it and sure the choke situation was the problem. That jet was semi clogged, like you showed, and after cleaning and re-assembly, it ran like new. 20/20 hindsight. Should have searched a month ago for this problem. Anyway, thanks again for sharing this video. So many times UA-cam has saved me lots of costs.

Hey, sometimes...if there's enough room you can remove float bowl bottom bowl..without removing the carburetor and linkages and use a carb-spray into that jet and then a metal needle or pin to clean out that brass jet from below...and then just one bowl-bolt back on and you're up and running.

As far as the choke handle goes you do not have to force it off simply turn it so that the notch comes through the notch in the plate. If you look at 2:27 you can see the plate notch and the little bent plastic piece you forced with the screw driver. If you had tried in the run position it would have came right out.

I have had my 8250/5500 generator since 2009 and have had to pm it many times over the years! I forced my choke handle the first few times before I noticed the notch myself. I would say after having to rebuild my carburetor twice over the years that running it empty does not guaranty it will start next time. I agree 100% it seems like it would but I will challenge you to run it dry remove carb bowl and see what comes out.

Obviously junk in the fuel can that ended up in the carb. Dissoluble crud is a simple fix with Sea Foam but dead bug parts or leaf bits not-so-much. You can't know which "flavor" you have unless you tear the carb down.
This is the biggest reason to use a screened funnel for ALL gas into small engines.

Only thing that got me was on the B&S 6000 portable generator there was NO spring inside, despite being very careful, it just didn't have one. Haven't watched the video yet, but just by going by what the Title says, tells me carb issues. Running on choke means not getting the right amount of fuel mixture, possibly running too lean., or carb. jets needs cleaning badly. I picked up a generator a couple of weeks ago, that had the same issue. I both cleaned the carb out properly, and reset the fuel mixture, and it runs great now. Starts on either first, or second pull. Now I'll watch the video, and see if I am correct in what I wrote above. I'll bet I am right.

What tool did you use at the 3:47 mark to push the jet down to pop out from the bottom?
How do I put the jet back on?
Is it pushed down from the top?
Can it be cleaned out with a wire without popping it out?
    Appreciate any help!

    • @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE

I used a torx screwdriver, but anything that will fit will work to push the jet out.
You simply put it back in the hole, gravity keeps it in position.
Yes push down from the top to put it back in.
Yes you could clean it without taking it out but it might get clogged again, thats why I take it out.

The problem is Briggs carbs do not run good with ethanol additive in fuel. Per the B&S people they never modified their carbs to adjust for ethanol additives. That’s what I finally pulled that info from one of their techs, 4 years ago. The engine only had 45 minutes on it. I now drive into town to get ethanol free gas. Expensive!
And here’s the kicker…. They wouldn’t cover it under warranty. They sent a new carb but I was not allowed to install it. I had to have the carb sent to a professional and I had to pay for labor! I’ll never EVER buy ANYTHING that has a B&S engine. Honda is the best I’ve found to date…

interesting, first what I would do, would be to turn off the fuel valve, disconnect the line from the carb, and put it not a cup, and then open the valve to see what kind of flow you're getting from the tank, to the carb. If that's good, then there might be a clog that made it from the tank to the carb and it needs to cleaned.

Well, I watched the video, and I was correct, but don't just clean the main jet. Blow out all the other routes the fuel uses to operate properly as well. The jet cleaned in video was the high speed jet, and there was no mention of the low speed jet, being cleaned, nor the routes the fuel takes inside the carb, for low speed idle. NOTE: ... If your going to open up a carb to clean the main high speed jet, clean, and blow out all other routes inside the carb. as well, where the fuel takes through the carb. to operate properly. Then it's not a waste of time, in taking carb off a second time, if cleaning wasn't done well enough and still ran bad.

I did all of this and got me a new carb and still ran on choke?

The carb wasn't the problem on yours, The fuel pickup inside the tank that goes out of thank could be your problem. It has a built in mess screen the will varnish over and limit the amount of Fuel the flows to your carb.

@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE hi there again. I did what you said about the fuel tank. I hook up a separate clear tank I have for testing ethanol free gas and filter and still runs with the choke on. I guess I will clean the new carb again, but everything looks super clean and lights thru all the orifices. I have a mikuni VM 22 I will thinking about putting on it.

You know, 90% of all small engine issues, are caused by bad/poor fuel mixture, or dirty carbs. I have worked on thousands of small engines, from lawnmowers to outboard motors, and they all have the same fuel issues in most cases, when they run poorly
