show my son this video this morning . our small farm generator would not run ,only on choke. he ummed and aahed. then started to follow video. Less than an hour after he statared it up and the thing purred away and ran on RUN. He was impressed with himself and more impressed with the clarity of all aspects of video. Many thanks from both of us. We have a small farm in Cevennes France.
Thank you so much! We are getting ready for hurricane Milton here in Central Florida and my parent's generator was only running on choke. I watched this video, and I was able to fix it for them!
Just wanted to add my thanks for this DIY video. I needed to fix the Choke problem on my generator and this DIY video showed EXACTLY what to look for and how to resolve the problem. This video is the Gold Standard for DIY videos on You Tube.
I almost turned off the video after the first 3 solutions but decided to watch to the end. Turns out I had an air leak due to faulty gaskets. Glad I stayed tune till the end. Now my lawnmower runs perfectly. You saved me from buying a new machine !
Just finished this repair on my Powerhorse 9000W generator, purchased in 2020. It would start in choke and stop running when placed in run. The video is SPOT ON! There was just 1 difference, the bowl. There was a component attached to the bottom of the bowl with 2 screws. I had to use my Milwaukee impact drill to remove them. Then I could remove a nut to remove the bowl. Thank you soooo much for your video. 👍
I am pretty good with small engines but for some reason couldn't get my generator to stay running smoothly at idle. I had just fully cleaned the carb (I thought) so figured it was something else... But this video convinced me to check it again, and sure enough there was still debris in the throttle jet! I guess I either didn't do a good enough job the first time, or there was still debris somewhere that found its way there on the next startup. Either way, running great again... thanks for the great video
I've rebuilt a few carbs before, but all I did was clean every part and port I encountered. My 2000 W Champion generator was waffling and required half-choke to run. Following these steps fixed both issues. I appreciate videos that don't waste time with the weather outside, pets, and trying to act cutesy or clever. After a brief description of basic carb functions, it got straight to the instructions. Well done!
Mate, you have absolutely saved my bacon with this video. The pilot jet was the culprit and I was going mad trying to troubleshoot the carburetor on my generator. I have literary done it all except for the pilot jet, until I saw your video that is. Now we're back in business. The whole video is super easy to follow, so thanks for taking the time to post it.
Great video!!! I took the bowl off, the gas was really old, and it was full of junk that looked like sawdust. Normally I would just buy a new carb, install it and call it a day. I have never had success cleaning the carb and getting it to work. I followed this video, all four steps, and like magic, my generator runs like new!!! Thank you, you saved me $80 for a new carb!!!
Thank-you!!! First time pulling apart a carb, great instruction. Found the clog, cleared, and now generator is purring like a kitten. Very thankfull I happened upon this video.
Excellent! Honda 2000 Needed a carb cleaning but still stalled off choke. Ran for 10 minutes gradually reducing choke and voila! All good now. These are awesome generators. 😉
Thank you very much for this video! There is a hurricane headed our way so I pulled out the generator in order to change oil and make sure everything was in working order only to find out it was running on choke only. Cleaned the main jet and the pilot jet, now she's spinning like a top!
Hats off to you mate. This has to be one of the best videos I've ever seen on UA-cam, you know so much that it's just transmitted effortlessly. Thanks for sharing!!
Hi, thanks for your help solving the problem on my Honda GX200. I did evrything you suggested: new fuel, clean main jet, emulsion tube, pilot jet. It now works as it should. I looked on other youtube posts, but they didn't fill me with confidence. Thanks again from England.
I am not a mechanic, but understand the principles of the simple gasoline engine. Rarely do I undertake mechanical repairs or troubleshooting without encountering multiple issues that i will not go into here. But I watched this video and followed your instructions, and solved the problem on my Champion generator without any mishaps. Other than losing the spring on the float pin and having to make a trip to O'Reilly's for some serious carb cleaner to get the green varnish out, and my generator hummed to life and started to sputter until I turned the choke down, and then off.... it ran for plenty of time without a hitch. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, it helped save me a great deal of frustration and money paying someone else or replacing it after I killed it.
Your video got me through a mfer of a time. I had the carb out 3 times before your tips got me in the right areas. Step 2 and 3 solved what I didn't on my own. Thanks a million for your help!
Thank you for taking the time share your wisdom. Your video eliminated the intimidation factor and I can't wait to fix my generator and my power washer. They both have the same problem. Again, thanks!
Very detailed video 🤓. Generator maintenance school is in session. Your guidance and explanation of trouble shooting is very helpful getting my generator operating smoothly. Thanks
Thank you my man... I have watched about 5 different videos and then happened to come across yours ... Thank you ! 🙏 I got a little education and my generator is up and running !!'
Hi "Home Battery Bank" I'm so happy now!!, i removed the carburetor, unscrewed and cleaned both main and idle jets, despite not being able to see any dirt, and now, for the first time since I bought, it runs absolutely regular. Thanks for your tutorial!
I knew all this already but I just wanted to comment to say very well spoken, explained & you didn't use the word "SUPER" as an adjective or adverb, not even once.
You have said soooo much knowledge, and I'm amazed at how well you explained Thank you and good job, sir! Coming from an old man with mad skills, I'm impressed!!!
Thank you for this video. I fired up my generator today for the first time in six months we have rare extreme cold coming to south east Texas to start Christmas weekend and I don't trust that ERCOT has our grid ready since the big freeze caused rolling blackouts in Feb 21. I noticed the generator would sputter/stall with no choke and would run fine with about 1/3 of the choke applied. I didn't use any fuel stabilizer so I added some and also removed and cleaned the pilot jet and allowed the generator to get nice n hot and now it's running smooth with no choke. Again thank you for the video and the clarity of instructions.
This was the perfect fit for my 37 Ton Champion Log Splitter. After watching this video I was able to clean my carb and exactly as stated in this video, there was a tiny piece of dirt in the emulsion part and every time I turned off the choke, it would stall. I took it apart as directed in this video, cleaned it with a small wire and now it's running perfectly. The only thing I would add to the video is mentioning the tiny "O" rings on the piece below the idle screw. Mine popped off while cleaning and lucky I had a white towel below so I easily found it. Great video, thanks!
I had this exact problem today because we lost power at 9PM last night and didn't get it back until 5PM tonight. You were EXACTLY right about the cause. My hat is off to you! Luckily it ran (full choke) for about 4 hours before it would only run for 2 seconds and believe it or not the electricity went on at the same time. I must have someone upstairs looking out for me.
Just an important remark for people following this great tutorial. I recommend doing it in the order of the video, because the last solution might make matters worse. The reason for this is that the last solution involves taking off the carburetor, and in my experience almost every time you take off the carburetor, the little gaskets get damaged because they are partly stuck to the metal. You might have created a whole new problem now. If you do damage a gasket and you need to get the generator running asap and can't buy one, you can make a new gasket yourself from thin dense cardboard like a juice or milk carton. Take the black plastic manifold that is in between the carburetor and the engine and trace that shape onto the cardboard. With a sharp box cutter cut out the outside shape and the intake circle. Use a drill with a wood bit to make the two smaller holes on the sides, but go very slow not to tear apart your diy gasket. Push down the plastic manifold tight onto the cardboard while drilling as slowly as possible to prevent tear. Hope this helps.
Thank you, not sure if it was #1 or #2 or 33 but i cleaned them all and it worked - thank you for the great info - i appreciate all the insights on what it could be and how to fix it, you seem like a really cool dude, wish i had a neighbor like you!👍
Thank you!!! I have had a problem with my generator that it will only run with the choke slightly closed. I had cleaned the carburetor 2 times and checked the needle valve, ect. The key was that secondary black screw trick where the tube was clogged with a piece of dirt. It runs perfect now!!!
The video really helped me and the last part of checking my carburetor gasket was the solution to my problem as my carburetor was brand new and it only works on choke all because of the wrong installation of carburetor gasket.
Thx a lot! I'm new to engines. Destins video on carbs made me dare to try, and your video made me succeed. You are awesome at educating - keeping it to the bare facts, showing just what is needed. Great stuff :)
My generator and carb are a bit different than those shown and I didn’t know about the jet on top. So naturally that was the blocked jet. Thanks, your video made me have a look and fix the generator. A big thumbs up 👍🏻
Thank you sir! Power is out here and the generator stalled after a couple of minutes. Drained the 2 year old gas out. Took off the carb bowl and there was a lot of funk on the bottom. Took the main jet out and it was clogged. Put it back in after cleaning everything and it fired right back up! I almost gave up.
Excellent video! I had to run on partial choke. Would still run fully open, but far from smoothly. Duromax XP4400E. I knew it wasn't bad gas, so I did the carb things you suggested. The jet and tube holes didn't seem clogged at all, but I ran the tiny wire through them anyway. I tried the same on the teeny tiny jet, but it seemed the wire was slightly too big to go all the way through, so I sprayed some brake cleaner in it. Wire still wouldn't go through so I put it back together not expecting the issue to be solved, but it was. Runs perfectly now. Thanks!
Hi, I'm writing from Spain, my brand new chinese ac generator 4 stroke gas engine powered, from the begining has only runned smoothly with the choke lever at mid range. I carefully read and listened to your excellent video and I'll try to check all the jet screws, main and idle. I'll do that tomorrow and I'll publish here the result. Thanks a lot for such a well performed and didactical video.

We have used the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!
Thankyou so much for this. Your explanation was perfect. Just bought a second hand one and it won’t idle after the choke is off. Just one thing. What is the small screw on the left of the carby for? The one sitting all by itself?.
Great info my petrol compressor has been running like a dream until I started having a problem that it would only run on half chocke...I will carry out the checks
@@HomeBatteryBank tell me about it, I was super stoked, not so much because I got I going but mostly because the obnoxious, ear drum piercing banshee that had following me around for hours prior, suddenly disappeared, and my wonderful, lovely, perfect wife suddenly reappeared. Thanks for offering your information. I cleaned my carburetor, change the oil and spark plug, and filled up my gas tank. I regularly used my generator. But now it still will not start. Previously it was only running on choke, so now it won't start at all
I'm well versed in this but this is a GREAT video!!! I learned from UA-cam but this definitely compiled a lot of what I had to learn over time into one video. Especially about the pilot screw and cleaning out behind it.
Every hurricane season I always start my generators and make sure they are running like they are suppose to. This year I went to start it and it will only run with the choke on. Hopefully this resolves my issue. I always turn my fuel off and allow the generator to run until it runs out of fuel just so there is nothing left so idk how it would get clogged. I also don't leave any gas in the tank and drain it all out into a gas can prior to storing it.
First I want to say: Thank you very much for this vid. Now to the question::: My generator is having this exact issue. I got it running smooth with the choke almost all the way on. If I run it like this a few hours will it cause damage? Power is out and I need the generator running for my family and also myself. I will try to repair it using this vids information another day.
I have a Honda eu2000i and has been having this issue. It’ll run for about 30 minutes on full choke, but as soon as I try to run without the choke, it immediately dies. I’ve only run it about 8 hours and it’s just starting to act up. I pulled the main jet, and pilot jet, cleaned them up, and cleaned the carb too. All the gaskets look brand new, and lines all clean. I have no idea what’s going on!

I always turn my fuel off and allow the generator to run until it runs out of fuel just so there is nothing left so idk how it would get clogged. I also don't leave any gas in the tank and drain it all out into a gas can prior to storing it.
Awsome! 😀👏 Fixed my generator straight away!
I knew about 1 &2 but needed#3 to fix my problem. Thanks 👍
Did it...it worked...cant thank you enough

Happy to have helped! 🙂
Excellent rundown
That worked. Fixed my EU3000is generator with this technique.
Awesome!
Yeah very explanatory thanks so much
Cheers, I’m gonna try all you have shown to cure my problem of the choke. Thank you so much for the info’.👍☺️
