The title of the video made me jump for a sec 😭
I thought the 2024 met gala had just begun!
Same I was like what? When?
Same!!! I was like what? When?😭
Same!
Same lol.
He’s good at click bait, 😊
these reviews are more important to me than the actual met gala
lol yes i can’t wait for the 2024 review
the Y2K revival was gaslighting me into thinking maybe fashion from the early 2000s wasnt that ugly... but my memory was right
It's the most horrid moment in the history of fashion
@@MsTriangleLIES!!! That is absolutely the 80s!!! 😂
@@rachelhatchet the 80s were ocasionally tacky but in an endearing way
As a younger millennial i still remember and have seen how "ugly" people looked in 2000s so i can't follow this Y2k trend. Nope, still looks ugly to me. Maybe for gen Z it's something like how i look at 90s fashion.
Those low rise jeans, the thong sticking out...combined with a big ugly belt. Don't forget the "hats" and nothing matched. Jesus Christ..
My ratty jeans, old t-shirt, and I are absolutely ready to pass judgement on these looks.
Clicked on this video instantly ready to judge. While wearing sweatpants, a Buffy tshirt and a messy bun.
@@lakritz8732a Buffy t-shirt is an eternally good fashion choice 👏
😂😂😂
Same!😂
Someone needs to say it Carolina Herrera is a very smart and elegant woman.
Having worked with her in the 2000’s, she is also extremely kind, generous, and devastatingly chic.
@@cooperbt that’s so nice to hear.
"I respect where we are coming from, but I don't like where we went"...HauteLeMode regarding fashion worn by Gemma Ward at the 2004 MET Gala. Luke never disappoints! I love the idea of showing unidentified guests who GET IT.
Carolina Herrera looked so flawless and in her element in that dress. And I absolutely love the reference and how she honored it. Very thoughtful and elegant. Love.
OMFG OLD MET GALAAAAS this is such a good idea i'm so excited!!
i know Luke says he doesnt wanna know, but for others who might be interested:
Sheryl Crowe - Ralph
Famke Janssen - Marc Jacobs I think
Gemma Ward - Rochas
Hillary Swank - Calvin
Ivanka - Behnaz Sarafour ?!?
Julianne Moore - Lacroix
Kristin Davis - LV by Marc
Liya Kebede - Kors? YSL?
Naomi Watts - Marc
Natalie Portman - Chloe
Scarlett - Calvin
Sophie Dahl - looks like Alberta Ferretti
You don't mean to tell me that Sheryl Crow is wearing Ralph Lauren. That off the rack looking horror that appears to have come from JCPenney??? Her bust isn't even supported on her left side, completely uneven bustline. I can't get over it. Oh my goodness, Ralph!
Please continue to do roasts of prior decades fashions! It's fun to see what people were wearing back then.
Their outfits feel like a fever dream
People love to talk trash of the fashion of today, saying it was better before... but this is the proof that things were not necessary better before 💀💀
"The early 2000's socialites needed to be stopped and nobody did it, and that's really sad". Luke, you simply are the best!!! Love your work!🔥🔥🔥🔥
21:41 Im dying at you blurring Isaac Misrahi's toes lolol
I lost when he said Lucy Liu was wearing a pathogen
Luke - love your videos! The woman in the black dress you thought was "cute" was Pat Buckley (RIP), wife of arch conservative author and television commentator William F. Buckley. She was a real NYC social icon back in the day. She chaired the Met gala for several years, and I think that she was one of Truman Capote's "swans." Damn you for making me feel ancient for remembering this. 🙂
Anne Haches look is so fun. Idk if it's beautiful, and certainly not on theme, but the more i look at it the more i like it
Honestly justice for Anne Heche, I looooved the hair and didn’t mind the look tbh
I think it honestly didn't suit her particularly well. I could imagine a more ethereal looking person getting away with it, like Anya Taylor Joy or Elle Fanning. Anne Heche has more classic and less dreamy features, so it just doesn't suit her as well.
@@chelseacheckington7421had. She’s very much dead in a very extreme way
I kinda thought she was attempting a tosseled "just had wild sex" look with her hair, so I didn't hate it
I like the hair but not the clothes, they didn’t mesh well. She sort of had an exaggeration ofCharlize’s hair look . If she had been dressed in something more to the theme I think it could have been great.
Honestly kind of love her look, thought it was a nod to the theme with outfit and hair
Anne looks to me like a Lady of the court who just got caught have a passionate “dangerous liaison” in a dark hallway. She had to hastily wrap up in a sheet and the hair… is 1700’s “post coital bed-head” and I love it ❤❤
I kinda didn’t mind Anne’s hair. It looks reminiscent of late 18th century hair once it dropped frm the tall look it went out sideways with a frizzy curly halo around the front. It definitely was a later style than when the movie is set
I loved her hair. She looks on point, especially knowing that a few ppl back then literally had rats in their wigs. 😂😂😂😂
I feel the same!
This is so fun to watch. Im glad you pointed out that people didn't necessarily dress on theme at the time. This represents so much of the side of fashion that is ironically hilarious. As an art form that has one of the largest groups of followers across the globe, it is REMARKABLY difficult to get people to move outside of their comfort zone. They like to watch OTHERS do it, but not take part. It is, in fact, extremely conservative in nature. It's why the pageantry, the industry of models and masquerade exist in such a large part... and why those who DO take part enthusiastically are so celebrated. It's also very high school. Asking Amber to be more costume was their way of educating guests and media... albeit without fabulous execution. The general response shows how 'mean girl' the majority would behave to stepping up. Thirty years in this industry and I still roll my eyes on the daily.
Just a few notes. Isaac's slides are a bit trademark for his personal "out and about". He's always maintained a very casual middle finger approach to what he's 'meant to do'. He's the most laid back punk personality you'll find. But that's why he's fashion.
The liquid silk satin sheath inspired dresses were all a nod to the slip / negligé. The theme inspired a lot of lingerie type ideas. That's why that seam was visible, it was meant to be a cheeky "it's not a gown, it's an undergarment" statement. That was about as on theme as people got then.
Anne was wearing a variation of a smocked dress that EVERYONE was wearing at the time. I wish I could remember who wore it most memorably so I could look it up. Someone important wore one in green that was all the media could talk about. The smocking and the ribbon was meant to reference ballet or some such. Can't remember but I promise, it was having a moment. I was obsessed with a pink version so I remember enough to know she wasn't a one off with that look. 😂
Commenting because I hope Luke sees this
FYI, Anne Heche has passed away in a tragic accident, she had mental health issues and was part of "the world's first gay supercouple" when she was dating Elen DeGeneres in 1997-2000. I hope she Rests in Peace, she seemed to have had a troubled life.
'Heche'
You should spell her last name correctly. I didn't even know who you were talking about until I read the first reply to your comment.
I loved the snark but I do think Luke should’ve just done a quick google search for the people he didn’t know. I cringed when he made the last jab at Anne knowing how hard it was for her in the later years of her life. He would never say anything like that if it was Brittney or Amanda Bynes.
Her death was also on TV super tragic
begging anna wintour to come on theme this year 🙏
although zendaya might overshine her anyway
She didn’t… she doesn’t… she shan’t & aught naught!
🌈🪬
The gaslighting of it all
Fashion is far from my lane but I would listen to this man talk about it all day. So knowledgeable and opinionated.
PLEASE let your next Met Gala review be the 2015 one I'M BEGGING 😭😭 One of the best Met's ever, almost everyone was on theme.
Scarlett's wearing a John Galiano dress, I remember reading an interview with her in a magazine back then, where she fangirled about it, it was very sweet.
I feel like most people took dangerous liaisons as a theme literally like sex, affair, etc instead of the French reference that the met intended
Also Sheryl Crow in straight up Wilma Flintstone Cosplay is sending me
Her bosom also appeared very lopsided.
Take a drink every time Luke says, "I don't know who they are wearing, I don't care to know." LOL
It would be too early in the morning for me to be that drunk, but... TTYL.
Amber's skirt is based on the Bayeux Tapestry, basically it's a tapestry about the Norman conquest of England
Love the throwback!! More please!
I love that your channel has educated me a lot on fashion. Before I would have assumed that logomania and anything released by a well known fashion brand would be the height of fashion. I’ve learned to be more discerning. I don’t always agree with your opinions but you really know your stuff. ❤
The guest round is amazing lol
poor famke janssen is giving middle school dance with that dress
OMG this is too true 😂
Omg so many people were giving prom, the 00s were so rough
Its so interesting to see what the met red carpet looked compare to today. Such a big improvement for the backround. They look like they are in a creepy alley.. those poor stairs
Loving the Carolina Herrera's look, while Luke is wearing almost the same idea 😍
Renee Zellweger was a Carolina Herrera muse at the time so that dress is probably Carolina.
I would love a video of you going through your bookshelf.
The robe hamish bowles is wearing is referencing the banyan, a type of 18-19th century eastern inspired robe/loungewear
Loved this throwback! Amazing how the entrance presentation has improved since 2004 - so weird to see ugly, wet concrete & barriers
I would love for Anna to shock us all and change her hairstyle 😮
OMG, all I can see is Calcifer 🔥 in the background! It is a DREAM bag! You are an absolute legend!
Haha. This is the comment I was looking for. I'm doing the same.
yesssssss I am fucking DYINGGGGGGGGG HERE! The Calcifer bag!!! Ugh!
I know nothing about fashion, but I would watch you roast and review anything...anything! You are a gem :)
RIP Anne Heche (1969-2022)
This was everything I wanted and needed it to be - we laughed, we cried, we cringed, and we celebrated.
There's an entire video about the outfit Marie Antionette wore that inspired the dress at 39:00. It was actually a sort of "cottage core" outfit meant to imitate the simpler peasant style of dress so that she would seem more relatable to the common people.
Murphy is in Gucci, Tom Ford's last collection. Legendary. Janssen and Davis are in Vuitton. Kurkova in Alaia.
RIP Anne Heche
This makes me long for how simple things were back then. The 90s and 2000s fashion is such a lovely hit of nostalgia for me and the people trying to do Y2K fashion now have no idea what they're actually doing. The Anne H(A)che look will be renting space in my head for weeks.
Favorite episode in ages. I laughed so hard. Thank you so much for that!
This was so much fun! Please do more 🙏 Would definitely love at least a 2005 look back for next year’s Met Gala
perfect timing for lunch! happy met monday 🤞🏼 we pray for some serves
Continue the throwbacks every year!
As a Dutch person It was such a throwback to see Famke Janssen on the met gala carpet omg, she's a dutch actress that's i think still most well known for her roles in James Bond Goldeneye (Xenia Onatopp) and the X-men franchise as Phoenix! Absolutely loved the Guest part of the video, so refreshing to see!
Came here to say this. Famke was such an icon during the time, at least to young straight dudes. She had a memorable & heartbreaking role in Star Trek: TNG also.
Also the Taken franchise
And she was Jean Grey. Phoenix didn't come until much later.
This was rough - but so entertaining. I really liked the guest round since Gala pics generally just show celebs now (Socialites still attend, right? Maybe Page Six makes room for them among the stars?).
Unrelated, has the black bag featuring what looks like Calcifer been discussed yet?
I'm not sure if it has been discussed but it's a loewe mini puzzle from their collaboration with studio ghibli.
charlize hasn’t aged at all omg. eternal MOTHER
The statuesque Sophie Dahl was one of my favorite. There’s a really nice picture of her where she’s posing that shows off more of the details.
Holy cow, clearly satin dresses were in. Its definitely not as fun when they didn't dress on theme. Luke is spot on!
Cheryl Crow was dating Lance Armstrong at the time and made every effort to wear yellow to remind everyone. She was also very interested in choosing garments that reminded people that even though she is 10 years older than him she still "had it." I have no idea why the turquoise but I have to expect it was simply the only dress that checked the boxes she cared about in an pinch.
I have zero in depth fashion knowledge but boy have you mastered doing fashion roasts and reviews but still keep it accessible to us laymen. Literally anyone can be entertained by these videos and you always keep it educational without compromising the entertainment value. Incredible for someone as young as you! Well done Luke and I’m so happy for your success!
p.s. Your shortform content is also incredible! 👏
Omg can we get more of this 'past Met Gala / Red Carpet roast 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾💜 Roasting current/events as it happens is soooo last season 🤷🏾♀️🤣 Im totally invested here😍 Keep this coming , we all wanna know everything about past met galas/red carpets, award shows 💜
Was the 2004 theme 'shiny satin'? 😂
Satin type fabrics were very in then
Am I correct to say that Rihanna in Yellow was the start of the peak of Met Gala popularity that we know nowadays?
Famke Janssen was in X-Men...she played Phoenix, the part was taken over in the reboot by Sophie Turner.
p.s. She is Dutch.
I'm quite old, I was introduced to her acting through her being a Bond girl. Mid to late 90s, I think.
@@hrdillon1980 You're Old?? I remember Sean Connery as Bond!!!
She was Jean Grey! Phoenix was just her alter ego later in the movies!
What's weird is that random guests whom may not be celebrites are the ones serving looks than the celebrities getting photographed.
These looks seem so simple compared to what people turn out today!! These look like ordinary red carpet/ prom dress/formal event gowns. And not the really creative, dramatic stuff we see today.
It wasn’t a costume party yet, the met gala is very old it only recently became a publicly broadcaster event with a lot of (non fashion industry) celebrities and more focus on theme
Twenty years ago the whole set-up looked really pedestrian. no carpet or glamorous tent, no fancy fences or anything. concrete floor, cheap plastic tent, temporary metal fencing and that's it.
Gwen Stefani would have pulled this MET off, she had this rococo Alice in wonderland style around her What you waiting for? era, it would have been interesting to see her take on this theme 🤔
I want to say the Renée Zellweger reference is the fact that wealthy people in the French court, actually would take pieces of gold that had been sewn in as an employ and things like that and one of their past times was to pick it out after all these people spent all this incredible amount of time embroidering this real goldinto their outfits and they would sell it back so I’m wondering if that’s where the reference was not 100% sure that to me seems like it might be
Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette would have been in pre-production during this. I wonder if there was a lot of buzz and they decided to hop on an early train. Odd they asked someone to be here when I don’t remember Antoinette being in Dangerous Liaisons. But it’s been a while since I saw it.
I hope you'll do all the years ❤ love the video and the concept.
God I love your Met reviews...never change!
The coat/robe situations on Talley and Bowles are referencing the banyan which is a lounge suit with matching large robe and waistcoat or sometimes just the robe that was kind of the bathrobe of the day. They would be worn in intimate company like family and good friends while entertaining in your apartments or at your home.
The difference that a piece of fabric makes... Never thought I'd miss the carpet.
This throwback was a great idea and I loved the guest round! I do not miss 2004 era shiny silk though, ugh.
I remember when this happened, Natalie Portman was on many best dressed looks with that green gold get up.
A video I never knew I need!
Love that you had the guest round! That should definitely continue forward for eye catching looks of "unknown" guests
What the heck is that fabric they are all wearing!?!?!
Shiney✨️
solid question, nobody even seems to know how to work with it
Satin silk incredibly hard to work with and wear it. Extremely popular back then as you can see :)
EXACTLY what I was thinking it's horrendous or maybe they just don't know how to use it😩
It's either taffeta (more matte shine) or satin (more lustrous)
Lol - as soon as you lead with Amber Valletta, I knew the video had to be old, who knew 20 years old! damn!!!
I love Famke Janssen's dress. I even wore one of those type of silhouette with a corset and a full round skirt. They were like a thing at the time *cries in millennial* 🥲
Yass! It was a thing.. A moment. Everbody wore it
Keep the guest round forEVer! Loved that so much!
Hoping that someday Luke gets to do a live review of the Met Gala -or maybe even invited to it as a commentator!
The Framke Johnson roast ~ I’m rolling 😂
IT'S FAMKE JANSSEN
I saw that exhibit at the Met in 2004, plus bought the accompanying book. Truly a stunning exhibit! Looking forward to seeing your take on this year's Met Gala!
Fantastic videos - such wonderful knowledge and research. I learned so much, 😊
i would love to see you roast more old met galas!!
Love the random guests! ❤
I appreciate all the time you put into this. Thank you!
He seemed to put little to no time or effort into this though lol he doesnt know or pronounce half of their names correctly or know the designers
I HAVE BEEN WAITING. I ONLY SAW THIS NOWWW!!
i hope you do more of these 😁
15:55 Famke Janssen: the best Jean Grey ever!
Kim Catrall is wearing Donna Karan and Scarlett Johannsen is wearing Calvin Klein. Not sure, but Hillary Swank could be wearing Ralph Lauren.
Loved to watch this
I have to say I really liked the dress worn by Anne Heche. Could it look more expensive... yes. But I enjoyed it somehow. Diane Kruger's dress is stunning.
Looking forward to watching another one of these :)
I just know the roast for the 2024 looks is gonna be fire! can't wait for it
Peep foot took me OUT! 😂
My God Luke please catch up on Anne Heche truly it is a whirlwind
Wonderful video! Just one thing, I think you meant the first French empire, as in the first Napoleon, and it was his empress, Joshepine, that started the empire waist, column dress style across Europe.
I absolutely love your honest to the fashion gods commentary, Tim Blanks definitely watches ;p
thank you luuuukke
Love that pink LV Petite Mal on your shelf. Such a great bag!
