I didn't pay attention to the pop years of the band, so i'ts been a very pleasant surprise to listen to Duke and realize how strong the great majority of the material in it is. It isn't as musically proficient as the work during the classic period, but it goes for a different approach and suceeds at that.
"Hogweed" stuck me as overly silly when I was young but I've gotten over myself and have really grown to love it (and become particularly how much of the lyrical content is, in fact, botanically and historically accurate, if dramatically stated) . Carpet Crawlers is among the top few tracks for me, but not for any reason I can easily verbalize. It just works on my primitive brain centers, I'm always moved and mesmerized by it.
Confession time: I’ve only listened to Duke and Shapes once each in full. So sone of the more obscure album tracks have gotten lost do so far. I have seen many opinions on JAJTD and it is interesting to see it so high. It’s prompted me to immediately go back and listen to it. I feel listening to lesser known tracks individually is sometimes more effective then listening to it within the context of the album as a whole. I also need to replay ATTWT in full again although the amount of ballads and mellow tracks in that one put me off. Turn it on again is such an exciting captivating tune and doesn’t overstay its welcome. And dukes travels is one of my favourite instrumental sections in the discography.
Volcano is an interesting take - I think you may be right about the instrumentation- it really did sound perfect. I think the production of this album is a step above Lamb and Selling which only enhances it. I just love that this is the first track after Gabriel left and you immediately think “oh they haven’t lost it”. Trick of the Tail is quite possibly their most polished album if it’s not their best. Hogweed is a fun song and yet again you have sone chaotic drumming from Phil here. Just a pleasure to listen to. I always look forward to this track when I play NC. Carpet Crawlers is a beautiful song but it is possibly the most pleasing song vocally. That refrain is just - ah, words escape me. I have run out of superlatives for it to be honest. I don’t care about the lyrical context of it. To me it’s just a beautiful song and of all the tracks on Lamb it stands by itself probably the best. (Though like you it is not my favourite track)
Totally agree, esp. about Carpet Crawlers. I love it and recognize its singularity but there are definitely other Lamb songs I feel more passionate about.
Well, some interesting choices here. I am surprised that Just a Job to Do is as high as it is as it's definitely more on the pop side. Though it's tough to come fill out Top 20, I'd probably put Duchess, Dance on a Volcano and Blood on the Rooftops up there.
@@electricbrainelectricshado9490 well, ranking 180 songs is no easy task!! And on any given day, various songs for a variety of groups including Genesis can change from day to day where I'd rank them.
Funnily enough I listened the Shapes album recently, and found myself enjoying Just a Job to do much more than usual. It does deserve to be high, however, I got to say I really can’t see how you can rank it higher than all time greats like Carpet Crawlers and The Musical Box.
Yeahhh fair enough! I filmed these over a few months and there were definitely a few times I thought "hmm I dunno if I should have put this so high" but of course the lower-ranked videos were done so it's stuck there.
Not being around the musical circles in ‘71- and initially introduced to the Seconds Out outro section- I’m one of those who think that Salmacis and Hogweed are superior to The Musical Box as far as epics are concerned.
I've never heard it confirmed but always assumed that the title 'Blood On The Rooftops' referred to the aerials on UK house roofs that received the broadcast signals during the terrestrial TV era. Hence, if someone was watching say, The Streets Of San Francisco, then there would be 'blood on the rooftops'.
Had no idea what song u were referring to at Number 25 as i was listening not watching. Was it JHKM or NRAA or even LF under discussion?- nah ! Twas LOC!!! No shirley it was LION, that MikeyR beast of a bass Plod?! Just goes to show how much we take for granted with this band (and frankly with your channel ). Only 19 to go! Who’s next? Great Fun as always, Hans! Thanks.
I must give you credit for acknowledging much of the good in the so-called "pop years." Three Duke songs in the Top 30! Duke is probably ranked as my third top album behind Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering. I also put Abacab in my Top 5. Just one PG era album in my top 5, which can rotate between Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound. I've enjoyed the series
"Just a job to do" better than "musical box"! It's a joke, i can't take this seriously. I'm still looking at this ranking, after months...but i do not believe anymore in your appreciation, sorry. It is ridiculous, a masterpiece of very bad taste.

I agree that Dukes travels is so good its unexplainable, its just pure epicness it can't be described in words!

Btw, Tony Banks often lists Duchess as one of his favorites

If I had it to do over again I don't know if I would have put it quite so high frankly.

@@twilightpole8634 which part specifically? Sorry for the lack of clarity...it makes sense at the time. Enthusiasm > Effective communication .
