Really well thought out list. Thank you! Very few weak songs in the entire catalog. Personally, I'd put Wings Wetted Down a bit over Teen Archer, but both are great. Flaming Telepaths is an all time fave from Secret Treaties (especially how it cuts into Astronomy). From Spectres, I Love the Night is sublime, but less of a deep track, I guess, and I do think Nosferatu is one of their best songs ever. People bag on the covers on Some Enchanted Evening, but the energy level and the guitar playing are stunning on Kick out the Jams. The production on Mirrors is annoying, and I really don't like Dr. Music and can't believe how often they have opened shows with that song and those silly sounding disco era synth drums. I guess the band really likes that song for some reason. But otherwise, in terms of songwriting, Mirrors has some of their best material: The Vigil is an all time classic. The Great Sun Jester, Moon Crazy, I am the Storm, and Lonely Teardrops are all GREAT songs. I could go on and on... I would like to give some props for highlighting the live version of Psychic Wars off of ETL, though! ETL is also an underrated album. A bit superfluous since it again has Reaper and Godzilla and CoF and HRtH, etc., and some people don't like it because it mostly has Rick Downey instead of Albert. But there are some really inspired performances on there, especially Psychic Wars, and in my opinion, this song kind of becomes the "Astronomy" of the early 1980 shows... atmospheric and open, really highlighting Buck's musicality as a lead guitarist.

I enjoy Talk a lot more than Close to the Edge. Yeah, go ahead and freak out but I find Close to the Edge has some good parts here and there,, but ultimately it bores me silly. And I have listened to CTTE many times over the years. I doubt I'll ever listen to any of it straight through again. Really the only parts I like anymore are the Get up/ Get Down, and the first 2 minutes of And You And I

Went to see them in Aberdeen in 1997. I knew nothing of them other than I'd seen the name in NME/Melody Maker. Came out of the gig their biggest fan. They just blew me away. The handclaps during Blood Chant etc Went to see them loads of times and followed them closely after that. Proper band, loved looking forward to their albums, they mellowed out over the years but kept making amazing music. The only strange thing for me was how little anyone else seemed to care for them. Super Furry Animals were a lot more popular, they were great but I didn't think they held a candle to Gorky's. Best band of the 90's.

Why collect CDs? I collect CDs for the following reasons: For the Artwork CD's are pieces of art in and of themselves, irrespective of the music thereon contained. Each one is amazingly unique in it's artfullness. For the Lyrics For the Additional Information, the liner notes: Who played what instruments, who wrote the songs, etc. For The Quality of the sound For Ownership : you are not renting the music, you own it. For the ART: The music is presented in the form the artist intended : most artists put a lot of thought into the album they've created, the order of the song presentation, the artwork added, etc. For Storage: You can rip the CD to your computer and store it that way Economics: It's often cheaper than buying the album on iTunes Variations: CDs often have extra cuts that are not on the streaming service. Rarity: The artist and music may be obscure and not available on streaming. Or they might not be there next week. The Master: The song version on the CD may be different than the one on the streaming service: Some songs have been recorded by the same artist multiple times, different ways, or with different mixes. Often the streamer just has one of those versions. For Nostalgia: they are cool. CDs are a souvenir of a specific time, a concert or a period in your life Privacy: The music you listen to on CDs is not monitored Dependability: The music on a CD is fixed. It was mixed and mastered a certain way and it will never change. The iTunes or Spotify version of the song may be remastered, remixed and dynamically altered, and the old version removed: Here you go, we want you to hear it this way now. (I have multiple copies of the same music on CDs mastered at different times. They sound different from each other.) Support the Musician: Buying a new CD supports the artist much more than a stream does. Why should (s)he work for 0.00001 cent per stream? Why make another album? Disconnect, from cyberspace. Put your phone away. Play the CD on a real stereo system, turn down the lights and really listen. Social: You can display your collection, share them with others, discuss them with other people. You can give them to other people as gifts. Memories: Having them reminds you to listen to them. They are fun to collect.

In a blog Burton Cummings spoke about Life In The Bloodstream's meaning. He said it was about stream of consciousness and existential and universal themes, rather than what mere mortals like me found it to mean. I had the crazy notion it was about family and life situations and not some cosmic celebration. But then Burton Cummings is operating at another level.

I always thought Don't You Want Me was a great Rock 'n' Roll tune and should have been a hit record. But then there was those lyrics like, "I'll kill your kid sister and murder your dad..." that AM radio would not abide.

  • @FreddyMF

I asked Burton about Self Pity and the Got Mystery Train Fever section of the song. He said he simply combined several song titles together to produce the section. I was dumbfounded because l had listened to #10 dozens of times and those obvious song title lyrics had gone completely over my head until Burton Cummings pointed it out.

I think the band's latest Mirror To The Sky is a welcome partial return to form especially after the lacklustre previous 2 releases. As for Talk i will need to revisit after this compelling review. Always felt it was a little disjointed and, in parts, a little mundane. Still time to have a possible rethink.

Fabulous review, one I've only just tripped over. My listening to this set hasn't been as forensic as yours, Hans, so I won't second-guess your assessment. I like it for (1) having this material in one place, and (2) there's a page in the book of my original photos. It's cool to have made the slightest contribution to this release.

Probably the most mismanaged and badly produced band in music. Case in point was "Life in The Bloodstream". Lyrics and melody a total mismatch. "I'll kill your kid sister and I'll murder your dad, I'll rip the lashes off your eyes. Slaughter all your cattle and I'll burn your crops, If your dancin' with another guy." "Don't You Want Me " from the LP's "Rockin'" and "Road Food". Truly one of the maverick bands in the day.

Sorry your Wrong (With all due Respect)... its all Subjective... there is no mixture... As far as a consensus that's impossible one (of many) reason(s) for this is most people are followers and will never diverge from their community's group think... (especially critics & fair weather fans) On the sticks in your head (accessibility) bias... that rhetoric doesn't hold up either... Because every time the brain Learns/Experiences something new it starts to forms lines/creases in it... the more the Individual revisits said experience the deeper the crease becomes & is easier to access/experience again *This is why people shouldn't abuse someone consistently (or at all for that matter)... *Its more common for people to do what everyone else is doing (Listening to) or keep participating in their conditioning (grew up on/media/era) rather than challenge their minds with something new (out side the box/more complicated) their not used to because that takes time & effort... So all accessibility (Melodic "Catchy" nonsense) really is... This music is just similar to everything you've listened too your whole life & your mind doesn't have to work that hard to access or relate it... Aesthetics (Emotions) is where its really at... that's what makes individuals UNIQUE Art is Subjective... My Aesthetic (Volitional) Ranking (correct one for me) 1. The Power to Believe/Discipline 2. The Reconstruction of Light (skip Prozac Blues) 3. Three of a Perfect Pair 4. Thrak (THRakaTTaK) 5. Islands 6. Starless & Bible Black (skip title track) 7. Larks Tongue in Aspic 8. In the Court of the Crimson King 9. Red (skip Fallen Angel & Starless) 10. In the Wake of Poseidon 11. Beat 12. Lizard Whatever your Ranking might be... is the correct one for you (as long as its Authentic & not just following the crowd) There can't & never will be anything Definitive (it will always be skewed) concerning Art... Tho, currently... there definitely is a Musically Illiterate Plague... Demonstrated in some critics comments (The Power to Believe/Adrian Belew, Islands... Rhetoric)

I fall into the “listened once or twice and wrote it off” camp previously. Now, I’m excited to have a “new” GG album to appreciate. I do think the boosted low end improves the album overall, and although the band was trying (somewhat) to change with the times, I’m finding even the attempts at pop pretty appealing. Thanks for the thoughtful analysis. It gained a subscriber.

Nice list! Jeff Buckley was actually a big fan of English pop and rock. Some additions: Red House Painters' singer Mark Kozelek did a pretty good version of Carpet Crawlers too. Then, not on Spotify, but Vince Gil and Alison Kraus did an amazing version of That's All, that can be found on UA-cam, and to me - Genesis fan for decades - is better than the original. That's All has been covered a bunch of other times, most notably (to me) by a Canadian group called Claire And The Reasons. To me, their version ALSO surpasses the original. I also particularly like Katzenjammer's version of Land Of Confusion. And if you're looking for a really really good cover of Back In NYC, you should check out the one by And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead.

Tough subject, but I must say agree with you sir! But, it is how it’s done now, so it would be nice if a positive methodology could be sparked here and it would allow for we music loving humans to experiment and push our own musical tastes further. However, I despise the thought of someone telling me what to listen to! Ugh!
