Would like to add something about a comment you made about the guys enjoying each other. They've said this in many an interview and I think it's quite obvious to see over the years, but Banks, Collins and Rutherford truly do like each other and liked working together
Pleased you have ranked Heathaze in the top 19. I've always felt this is a vastly underrated song. It's an emotive and melancholic performance and melody.
Albums made by bands who consequently split up. A Tony Lyric. Just two highlights from this video. Thanks! The quirky Twilight Alehouse always annoyed me but your appraisal made me want to enjoy it from now on. Every Genesis Fan should watch this series. I'll tell HeyitsJustJP about it too!
@@marchersant5758 yes indeed. Re-evaluation is healthy though. finding the time and prioritising is problematic. Getting things in perspective and enjoying the processes are essential! I'm gonna put the archive 1 CD on now and I'll report back OK? Thanks for the compulsion. While I'm at it - I'll check out BBC Stagnation too which atm sounds mindblowingly pretty . I haven't got the Trespass booklet though...
Too bad my Stagnation appraisal was hampered by a jumping CD . But, wow, Twilight Alehouse sounded good! Very good. My memories of it were the ending -with the organ bending and heavy thunder- but what I hadn't appreciated were it's gentleness and also it's Funk Flute 12 string guitar Battle accompanied by Phil 's Cymbal Fills. Trying to say that after a visit to the Twilight Alehouse would be fun. Thanks for makin me listen! Enjoy your day.
These vids are quite interesting to a "classic Genesis only" fan! I doubt if you will make a convert of me but your description of some of these "pop" songs seem worth looking into. Great to hear you have some more PH/ VdGG related content coming! BTW It took me a little while to figure this out but your knowledge and quiet confidence and insight remind me of Carl Sagan. The Carl Sagan of prog I guess🙂✨🎷🎹🎸👍
"Mama" is never high on my list. I still remember the first time I heard it in 1983. (Granted on a little cheap radio playing in my workplace, then.) I'd been eagerly awaiting the 'new' Genesis album. The radio DJ said this is from the 'new' album - I can't recall if it had been released yet - and I started to get excited. But then I heard that mechanized drum machine loop. My heart sank. I immediately thought of black club music, that artificial hand clap sound. Yeah, I know the song builds from there, but first impressions really stick with me. Plus I think it goes on longer than it should, without doing anything truly different.
Was very excited to see this come up and not oh boy sone cracking tunes here. I actually just did my own order (leaving out all songs I actively dislike and all of the first and last album) and watcher of the skies is actually third for me but it is really arbitrary now so let’s just discuss the songs. Only recently discovered heathaze and it really is a gorgeous song as are a lot of tunes in Duke. The lamb tracks are all bangers - In The Cage is fantastic of course, it’s actually my favourite Lamb track marginally ahead of The Lamia (which I’m thrilled to see has made your top ten - great song)The title track and Carpet Crawlers. There’s not a lot on Lamb that stands alone I discovered when doing my own ranking but the things that do are spectacular. Mama and home by the sea suite is also a solid part of the self titled album. There’s some great moments in all of them but one of my biggest highlights is when the drum fill comes in on the toms in Mama. God that’s epic. So top ten will have a few usual suspects: dance of the moonlit knight, firth of fifth, cinema show, supper’s ready and musical box are ones that haven’t been mentioned yet (unless I forgot) but also the lamia, I can’t remember if can-utility or white mountain have been mentioned and I know there’s a song or two from Duke (or at least I’m pretty sure). Still I’m sure there are a few surprises that I haven’t seen yet. Looking forward to the reveal!!!
Interesting. I was a bit surprised to see Heathaze so high, which I'm fine with as I enjoy this song immensely. Home by the Sea would be in my top 10. Strong list for this segment. A few I would lower, but worthy effort
What an insightful och impressive review of the Genesis catalogue this has been. It has been a pleasure to follow the journey from 179 and up. As a Genesis nerd, I couldn't resist trying to figure out which 10 songs are at the top. I'm pretty sure I know which they are but I'm waiting to get them in the "correct" order.
'Mama' is probably the very weirdest and darkest "hit" or "pop" song by the band. Not a mega-hit, perhaps, but the popularity of the song (at the time, and continuing) is pretty surprising to me. 'Stagnation' I'd easily place this high up as well, works like crazy for me.c
I have a notification for a comment that mentions your band but I can't access it for some reason and it cuts off during the list of influences. Lemme know the name and I'd be interested in checking your album out when it drops.
While I greatly respect your effort and commitment to do this project, which includes rare B-Sides and unreleased songs, I've been very surprised and even stunned by some of your choices. Putting Twilight Alehouse this high is almost inexcusable. I'm certain that even the band members would roll their eyes. Like so many of these songs, even they concluded these songs didn't 'make the cut' to even BE on the albums. Obviously some are better than others, and in some cases could legitimately be ranked higher than other 'legit' album songs. But to rank Twilight Alehouse above so many other incredible Genesis songs unfortunately, IMHO lowers your overall credibility. I have no doubt that every member of Genesis would agree.
you're looking for originality at all cost in your choices. Music is more simple and less narcissistic than that. Mama would be around 120 for me, and your number 17 close to the end of the list. These musicians had an excellent taste to protect their most perfect album (if not the most intense) from this mediocre song. But of course your taste is yours, mine is mine! watcher of the skies is an obvious top 5 for almost everybody. To be honnest, i think it is shorter but more impressive and perfect than Supper's ready (in my top 5 also).

Much appreciated! People usually say Dave Mustaine from Megadeth so that's a nice change.

In the Cage being my favourite Genesis song, I’m very happy to see it rank this highly!

Don't worry bud. My dad also says that exact same thing.

Mama? There are 18 better tracks on The Lamb alone!

Have to say Mama is a dirge, one of the worst Genesis songs.
Are dirges bad?
