I like how you explained the difference between short waisted and short torso. I am short waisted as I could identify with all the same examples you gave. One of the tell-tale signs for me is trying to fit a v-neck top or a top with any kind of straps-they don’t usually fit. I like the examples for dresses that flatter our short waisted bodies. I will definitely seek those out! Love your videos!😊
I am 46. This is the FIRST explanation (and an excellent one) about short-waisted I have ever seen in my life. THANK YOU! So so helpful in styling tips. Appreciate you. ❤️🙏🏽
This was super helpful for me and I am tall! I have a short waist and a long rise, so because I am tall, my rise is L-O-N-G! It explains a lot about why certain styles work and certain styles don't for me. I love the idea of the dresses with the long waist areas! I literally cannot buy a ready-to-wear dress because 1) the waist hits too high, and 2) the dress is too short. But I am getting into sewing, so knowing what style of dress to make to suit me is a huge help! Thanks for your content!
This is gold! I appreciate you very much for making this eye opening video. I thought I was short torso but this video cleared up exactly my problem with being short waisted. The v neck, the straps falling and the riding up of my skirts, that is exactly me! Thanks to you, I have a better grasp at what to look for when I go shopping.
Please make a video about how to dress if you are thin but broad. I often have a problem finding coats, shirts and dresses that are broad enough across the chest and shoulders. If I go up in size the arms, neckline and garment length will be too much for my frame. My best outfit concept is a sleeveless top (=no shoulder width problem) under an open long oversized cardigan. But would be happy for more great options. Love your channel and your attention to detail!
I’ve been trying to determine my body type for years, but couldn’t - it’s because I’m short waisted! So none of the shapes are me, I’m petite with short waist and balanced hips-shoulders. Finally, thank you! 🙏
Tops with V necks are always too low-cut on me and tank straps constantly fall down. Sizing down doesn’t help much, the tops are then too tight across my bust. It’s frustrating being short-waisted. High neck tops don’t flatter me much, being busty.
My family all sews. I am 70 years old. I have known that I am "short-waisted" since I was a teen. They used to make patterns which were "half sizes". You could even buy half-sized clothing. Some think that half-sizes were for chunky women. For children, yes. But for women, half-sizes were perfect for short-waisted individuals, even the skinny ones!
So much good information in this video that I had to watch it twice!😀 I always thought that if a person has a long torso they are long-waisted, but I was wrong. Thank you, Chi for explaining this concept in a way that is easy to understand.
Yay for mentioning this. I always knew that I am short-waisted (short from waist to shoulder), but have a long lower torso (waist to leg break). I agree, this proportion is fairly common, especially among petites.
This is so helpful! I have always known from sewing dresses that I am short-waisted. But I never sew pants and never thought about the aggregate torso measurements for the shoulder-to-waist combined with the rise. And although I am only 4 ft 11 inches, petite sized pants which are really cut for ladies between 5 ft 3 to 4 inches do not need to be hemmed for me. And sometimes with very high rise jeans I have to keep tugging them down. I realize now that I am short-waisted with a medium rise, resulting in my torso being closer to medium than short, and my legs being relatively long. This is going to be SO HELPFUL , whether I do my own alterations or take clothes to a seamstress. THANKS!!!
I have figured this out the hard way over the years. I'm short waisted with long legs. I guess medium or short torso. Anyway, I love empire waists dresses! Thanks, Chi! Btw, you look so beautiful in both of the blue dresses. I love them.
Thanks Chi. I believe your videos are getting more and more sophisticated. Well done. Now I gotta refigure my figure because I always assumed that my short waist meant a short torso.
I've got a long torso & short legs. I think I have a short waist. By watching to the end, I figured out I do have a short waist. All the ways you say to dress for it are what I have liked for myself for decades. Thanks! Great information on your video!
I am only 5’ 2” short waisted is an understatement. I cannot use any pants that are higher than a 9” rise (mid rise) however, I can use regular inseam pants, any petite cut would be almost like wearing Capri pants😭 my body is so fking weird!
You have the best editing and comedy skits Chi 😍 Really appreciate all of the information and work you put into each video. I love binge watching them. Keep up the excellent work.
Loved this video! You are spot on about the V-neck and shoulder issue. I always have to have things altered in the shoulder to fit properly. I now realize I am short waisted as well as having a short torso. When I wear a high rise trouser, I feel like they go up to my boobs! 😂 I have recently rediscovered dresses and realize, as you point out, they are more flattering.
Omg...I wish I found this YEARS AGO! I often alter straps and v-necks, my waist is invisible. I hate pants...they never fit right. I struggle with how to dress and hide at home. Thank you!
I am 5’1” and 62 years old. I haven’t seen much information over the years to help and guide short women with fashion. Your videos fill that need!! Thank you and keep up the great work!!
Very well presented. It is extremely helpful that you identify the critical elements of each example. Thank you for the insight that you have shown to include this information that very few stylists offer.
Thank you!! I've been just today finally realizing more that I have a short waist but at least slightly long torso plus slightly short legs. I think. Which is why it makes sense certain things flatter or don't flatter me.
im 4'10 and struggle so hard with clothing looking the way i want it too, it didnt matter so much as a child but now that im 20 i find myself lacking confidence because of my stature. my waist is high on my body but i find high waisted pants go near up to my armpits, i also have a really short rise. also tops, i wear alot of belts but struggle to find tops that are cropped enough to show my belt, i usually have to crop the tops myself to get the look i want
This Is why I always feel more comfortable in dresses. I am short waisted too and also have a longer torso and not so long legs. I always have to wear high raise jeans because my lower torso is longer and alot of high rise ones are still at my hip/below my belly button.
My Mum has always told me I'm short waisted & I've never really been sure what she's talking about?! I always have problems with V necks being too low & straps too long. Thank you for explaining 😊
Wow, I am a huge fan of your videos! 😮 you have completely changed the way I see my body, in the best way possible. I have been taking steps to dress for my body and your channel was where I started, thank you so much 😊
I have a both short waist and a short torso, and relatively long legs for my height (5'1"). I find that having an overall short shoulder-to-hip distance means that tops in general don't fit right, especially in combination with my narrow shoulders. I think with your long rise, you get away with a lot of styles that simply won't work for me. Especially since I'm also pear-shaped with wider, curvier hips. I definitely agree with you on high rise jeans or pants: I can't wear them at ALL! Midrise or low rise all the way, baby.
There’s also the fitted dress test. I always have problems with the waist of the dress sitting on my hips unless I buy from a petite range. I also find that v necks fit me better now. When I was younger I had a flat chest and had the exact problem you describe. Now that I am older and since giving birth I have a fuller bust and those v necks fit.
Today on 3/3/2023 i finally realised i am short waisted . All of those tests, i passed all of it .. Thank you so much.. Now i know why some clothes made sense and some not. The general style advice classifies body type in broad categories and then one remains confused, why even following all that advice i still dnt find the right fit
Thank you for a very informative video, Chi! I always had a feeling I have a short waist and short torso but a long rise. I recently bought an Alice McCall denim dress on sale and the shoulder straps were so long on me that it would cost a lot of money to alter it in the shoulders in order to take it in! 😭😭 Needless to say, I refunded it. It wasn’t going to be worth the hefty tailor fee.
This was so helpful for me. Because I have a very large bust and a long rise, I couldn’t ever figure out where to measure my waist, but now I know I have a short waist, long or average torso, and short legs. Not a problem when I was young and slim, but now that I’m middle aged and plump, dressing for my shape has been so confusing.
I’m all pelvis, short waist, short legs. I have to really focus on ab workouts, or I can’t find my waist. Bikinis have always been awkward, either high rise bottoms or low rise…the skirtini that comes to my natural waist works best and is most comfy.
This is all true for me! If I buy petite pants and they are high waist but they come up really high with some space in the crotch what does that mean for me?
Short-waisted women actually have less distance between the lower ribs and the waist, this causes the lack of waist definition. That’s why plastic-surgery addicts like Kim Kardashian have ribs removed, it gives a smaller waistline. Not something I would ever consider! Ribs are there to protect the lungs and other organs and support the body, removing them is major, major surgery and a risk to overall health.
So does short torso + short waist = a more hourglass figure? The image you show of the short torso body type is quite curvy and looks more like me than the long torso. I am short waisted but have a defined waistline.
I related to V neck tops always too plunging. I never buy an item without adjustable straps. Short waist, longer legs, narrow hips, square shoulders. So difficult to find clothing small enough to fit.
Thank you for clearing my confusion about short waist=long legs 😅. I have neither and it was very confusing. Now I understand I have a long rise and therefore long torso- I have violin hips and they start high, than a little hip dips and than round wide part connecting to my also wide thighs. Also my ribcage seems very long+I have flat chest so even though there is some wais definition in my measurements (chest 78 cm, waist 66cm lower hips 95cm) my waist is so short it is barely visible
I have a long torso, but there’s one inch between the top of my hip bone and the bottom of my ribcage. I have a long ribcage and long hips. Stuff looks super weird on me tucked in.
Finally, i know what my body type is I'm 37 years old and barely finding out 😢 lol, thank you, I'm just like you with the spaghetti straps and my braws they constantly fall down. But i have the opposite effect, my shirts always rise up on the front, so the bottom of the v neck is choking me. I'm like why does it do that. Also the same thing happens to me with my skirts and no waist definition. I'm short waisted but have a long rise i feel better in high waisted pants cause i have a lot of junk in the trunk and those pants keep my crack from showing and keeps me from having camel toe. It's so hard to find pants that fit. Plus i was born with hip dysplasia so I'm uneven it sucks I'm all screwed up.
Which rise is best for a 5 ft 1 inverted triangle? I wear mostly mid rise. I do have a balanced torso as well. Should I stick to that or try high rise so I can wear short tops and make my outfits apply to the rule of thirds?
So I am short waist it seems, but also have a very short torso. Normally I have a very fine waist (hourglass) but since I have Colitis it also means it can bloat one way and thus I can bloat up literally 10-12 cm on a bad day. I guess I should have known I was short waisted as indeed with small straps I always have to adjust them (read make them shorter or adjustable). My legs are normal length compared to average size, it is just my body is missing 5-10 cm in my torso. Was fun when pregnant... You can imagine where the baby-bump goes, right... my waist went from 60 cm to 129 cm... I always have trouble finding the right pants, most come up to high for me (like underbust style) and also why most pants are way to wide in the waist. So I always have to adjust my pants, even leggings (which I use in the winter in stead of pantyhose under a dress (panty's are always to short for me, I have chubby legs but due to the length the seem normal, pfff...). I prefer dresses and skirts because that hides my bloated belly when I do have it.
Im short waisted and short torso but I'm 5 feet tall and chubby mostly in my lower half and stomach I have a triangle/ pear shape finding clothes while losing weight is a nightmare as my thighs and hips have also been wider even when I was skinnier and healthier weighing at 125.
I am 5'2 I have long torso but short waist it seems. Also short legs and my big broad face makes me look weird in photos since i am big boned and i look skinny and bony which actually i am not.
Maybe you can help. I have a 8" rise. But my pants sag in the crotch big time. I can't find any pants that fits. Everything sags and bags in the crotch . I have one pair of mid rise jeans and they bag within a few mins. What can i do? Anyone?
It confirmed my suspicions. Short waist, long torso. My natural waist is where Chi's is. Already knew I have a long torso since my skeletal waist is way lower and I have a long rise.
Haha I think I have short everything. For sure a short waist, a low rise, but also defined waist line ánd short legs !!! 😂😂 so nothing to win here ( 5.2 shorty)
I have a short waist because my breasts sit low on my ribcage. I found this out as a skinny 12-year-old in sewing class at school. The teacher helped me lower the bust darts on the pattern. I don't have a short rise. Is that unusual?
I like how you explained the difference between short waisted and short torso. I am short waisted as I could identify with all the same examples you gave. One of the tell-tale signs for me is trying to fit a v-neck top or a top with any kind of straps-they don’t usually fit. I like the examples for dresses that flatter our short waisted bodies. Killing it again with the intro! I am shortwaisted so this is so helpful. Thank you.

Honestly you are the best. Finally style advice that actually makes sense because it's based in reality.
That’s me with the V necks that are always showing too much chest/bust. I like how you are so positive and give good examples how to look good.

Dear Chi, you're hilarious! I love your videos; you provide valuable information and do it engagingly. Thanks for sharing them!

Very informative. About the skirt test - a skirt also goes up if it's too tight.
Well this explains the skirts issue I have. Now I get it! Thank you!!
I just learned I have a short waist. Thank you for your amazing help like always.

This is so helpful distinguishing between short waist and short torso. I also have short waist and long torso. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this!!!! This explained everything I’m experiencing in how most clothes fit me.

Amazing! Thank you so much for this
0:30 Omg, Im looking for a coat like this 😮 please tellre where it's from and let's hope they still make it a year later 😅
I really love those jeans! What brand? Where do I get a pair??
You can check out our online store for some jeans you might like www.petitedressing.com/

What type of swimsuit or 2 piece would you recommend for short waisted older women.
I related to V neck tops always too plunging. I never buy an item without adjustable straps. Short waist, longer legs, narrow hips, square shoulders. So difficult to find clothing small enough to fit.
Fantastic video!!
Your vids are so helpful love from India ❤️
So glad!
Where is the dress from you show at 5.42 please x
Where can I get the empire waist dress? ❤❤❤
I have short waist and short legs. all petite dress waist are at least 1-1.5" too low for me.

Love your videos
Thank you so much for loving it! ❤️
Which rise is best for a 5 ft 1 inverted triangle? I wear mostly mid rise. I do have a balanced torso as well. Should I stick to that or try high rise so I can wear short tops and make my outfits apply to the rule of thirds?
I feel so represented with this video 😂
Thank you!
Love watching you. I have a long torcole with puged tummy. I'm 5 1 and find it hard to wear swim wear. Weight 135 pounds. Could you help me.

Maybe you can help. I have a 8" rise. But my pants sag in the crotch big time. I can't find any pants that fits. Everything sags and bags in the crotch . I have one pair of mid rise jeans and they bag within a few mins. What can i do? Anyone?
Can you have a hourglass shape and have a short torso?
I got the double whammy of both… for my height I have stupid long legs though
I'm short waisted, short torso and have been told so many times that I look tall until the person stands close to me 😆 I'm 5'1
I wonder if this could also apply to men.
It confirmed my suspicions. Short waist, long torso. My natural waist is where Chi's is. Already knew I have a long torso since my skeletal waist is way lower and I have a long rise.
I must also be short waisted as whenever I'm being measured for a theater show, once I get the outfit -- it's too big for me.
I like your videos and you're funny
i hve shorr waistw and short legs😅😂
Same :/
Haha I think I have short everything. For sure a short waist, a low rise, but also defined waist line ánd short legs !!! 😂😂 so nothing to win here ( 5.2 shorty)
Let's go short girls! ❤️
I have a short waist because my breasts sit low on my ribcage. I found this out as a skinny 12-year-old in sewing class at school. The teacher helped me lower the bust darts on the pattern. I don't have a short rise. Is that unusual?
