you may not read this but your rear chain slider is on backwards it should probably be fixed before it breaks and causes more damage. just figured i would give you a heads up happened to my banshee and it toasted my output shaft bearing and messed up my transmission.
Glad you fixed that older YFZ450! These are probably the BEST all around sport/race quads ever made. Older ones are great too. Fuel injected models are best ('09+).. but ANY good running/well maintained YFZ is excellent. I think 1yr ('06) had an inherent oiling issue (was easy fix @dealer or online many ppl posted the fix) that's it! Can still buy one brand new says alot. Keep sport quads alive!
04 was the first year, 06 received some good changes with fixing the charging system and new swingarm, 07 and after the oil problem was fixed. I am a HUGE fan of the carbed yfz's..
Good built and tuned carbed yfz will smoke a FI yfz anyday, my 13 carb yfz was dead even with my buddy's 23 yfz450r , but since I've took the factory mikuni carb off and put bigger fcr carb on , and it's alot faster now , the carb quads make more hp with same mods
These guys all know what they are talking about ! A carburetor on yfz feels to have higher butt dyno ratings
Agreed they are a lot of fun, good work! My Honda 450F quad is torquey as hell. I bought a 2004 CRF450X with the same motor and that bike actually scares me… lol
every morning i get up i always look forward to you're videos i love em keep em coming bro
Couldn’t have said it better!
Goob
For sal
These videos that he makes are some of the best videos I’ve ever watched. I love four wheelers and love riding it so cool to watch him fix them and ride them so much and see how they work.
Basic step one replacing a blown head gasket where the head and the cylinder are both aluminum is to check the surfaces of both to make sure they are flat and true. I didn't see him do that in this case. This is especially true if improper torque procedures were done sometime in the past.
Never knew that! Been lucky not to have had blown head gaskets in any 2strokes or 4strokes ive owned. Thanks.
I came here to add this. it's going to blow again, in that exact spot, because it has a low spot on the head/deck.
head is probably warped.
Unlikely to happen and usually don't even bother checking and mine is always fine not that I've ever really blown one I've just replaced them doing top ends
I don't care if it is a V8 or 1 banger, warpage is a common malady that MLS gaskets cannot cover for. It is a MUST to check for warpage. Annnnnd, either go with an ARP stud kit or replace the TTY bolts. Any time the torque pattern involves following a torque number with a 90°, 90° (180°) final, we are dealing with TTY. These are notorious for stretching and at high rpm, the head will lift. I live in Colorado, not far from the Continental Divide. That stretch of I-70 kills Subarus due to people railing up the pass for extended high rpm, 90 MPH travels. I get to do head gaskets on em frequently. Same thing happens with the Quad being railed at high rpm. Especially when TTY bolts have been reused.
I also use copper head gasket spray on those head gaskets about 3 good coats
Where do you buy that from?
@@2vintage any good part store should have it.
@@chucksanders7788 I just found it on Amazon and ordered it, thanks!
Most manufacturers of MLS gaskets advise against using copper spray. The viton is supposed to stick to the metal surfaces.
Sounds like you got it dialed and properly sent! Thanks, Joe, for a great video, glad you got the bugs ironed out!
Congrats on getting it fixed! Time for a top speed test now lol
you may in the future want to get new head bolts cut grooves in the old ones so you have a home made thread chase. The engine is near 20 years old and grease oil and grit will take up some of the stretch. Just an Idea I've cleaned plenty of LS engine blocks this way and you wont believe the junk that comes out even after spraying brake clean and compressed air
I love watching every single video you post looking forward to the next already 💯🙏
This kid always has decent content. His riding though is enough to drive me crazy. I'm a novice at best and would ride circles around him all day.
Customers bikes tho init
This yfz would be my first nomination for a 4x4 drive system. Reminds me of a friend of mine driving home his ls7 corvette. When he hit the straight of way he said he could never match his rear wheels to the speed he was going in snow. He ran off onto the tracks rolling over. The battery came loose striking him in the head. Too much power.
Great Vid Joe. She sounds great
That thing is a unit. Great job as always
It's an old machine + can tell when he 1st got it ..was marginally maintained. If I were him & he KEEPS IT..def put FULL SYNTHETIC 10W40 (Mobil1 4T racing 10w40 is awesome) & he should if that's his only YFZ. They are amazing sport /race quads. Best all around high- performance quad ever built most say. I have a "very well maintained" 2010 YFZ that's never needed any engine work as of yet. Perfect compression etc.
Oh yeah buddy she sounds so much better then cylinder temps just had to have been through the roof for it to make the coolant boil that fast lmao egt’s must have been absolutely crazy lol
The best sound'N audio by far since the 350 banshee you did. Both throttle not friendly quads hahah
I find it strange the fan wasn't coming on....should look into that 😘
Hey Joe I bought one of the Niche kits for a Polaris 400L top end complete .
The piston clearance was within spec but the bore needed a small cleanup and hone and the ports definitely needed chamfering. $55
No studs pulled out
Starts like a new car
Runs perfect
Just have the Niche kits FINISHED by local machine shop .
Great fix today Win !
The cheaper kits do work most the time but even when they do they wear out in half the time that's the catch u save some money but then ur rebuilding a lot more frequently I've tried them all on my bikes and ended up going back to the better brands
I've had terrible experience with niche. I just spend the money but save the time and headache later.
i check always at surfaces are both flat's before i put new casket and right way to done all its in Aluminum heads you should ,
Iron heads can be re-torqued when hot, the head bolts may
expand in length when warm more than the iron head. Otherwise the head
gasket may settle some when it gets warm.
Great job I know that feeling when u finally get it right !! Beautiful thang!!
You need to get a pressure tester for radiators most systems work under pressure also check voltage rectifier Joe 😊
tuning 101: lean it out until it overheats at idle and exhaust glows red, then go back up a couple jet sizes. Gotcha. Man, if only they made an affordable sensor you could use to get it right the first time...
Your videos always get me through the tedious train journey to me dad's house
@martin barr's CRF450 it's called speaking Somerset
So it could have been a head bold stretch issue. Start using some assembly lube on your head bolts unless your told not to by the manufacturer.
Good pt. Or new bolts maybe too. It's near 20yr old motor! Always use some assembly lube why not? You mean an adhesive glue on head gaskets?
I had my XX out in the snow just like that today... I didn't keep it out long because these conditions are really hard on race bikes! All the reving and spinning will cause Carnage if you over do it
That thing would smoke the everything except maybe the quadzilla banshee.
Those head bolt are torque to yield bolt. Suppose to go to like 40lbs than back down to 30lbs. That means its torque to yield. Those bolts are meant to stretch. Should have looked into some aftermarket head bolts
Or a stud kit
I saw the tire lockup in the last video and assumed it was due to the camera frame rate giving the illusion that it wasn't turning.
Sometimes you have to spend some money on good gaskets like cosmetic MLS gasket , I built one where I used ARP studs and nuts cuz it keep blowing gaskets
Oil or coolant on the surfaces can cause the viton coating to slip as well (make sure it is CLEAN!). Cometic are definitely a step up from many others, they must have their own supply of coated stainless stock, as the cheap brands all use the same material. If it doesn't have the black coating, don't bother, the clear doesn't work more than a year. I've had a few cheap brands leak between the plies as well, not just between the gasket and head/cylinder
Hey there, love watching the channel. By chance have you posted a video for a Yamaha Timberwolf 250 99' model? Trying to find some info on one. Picked one up that runs but would like to service it. Looking for specs on how much oil, air filter, oil filter, and anything else I should service. Looking forward to your response.
Enjoy your videos. You have taught me patience.
Probably a bad fan or fuse caused it to heat up and ruin the head gasket. Would look into that. My honda cbr600 will blow the fan fuse sometimes, especially when hooked up to a jumper pack.
Nice job joe sounds a lot better mate crackin quad it's got plenty power that's for sure take care mate 🔧🔧👍👌🔧
SHIFT!!!!😂😂😂 Dude is just bouncing the thing off of the rev limiter.
The quad is like brappppa braapppp
I Told you when you purchased a yfz450 that you would be under the fuel tank more than you on the seat
I can attest to that🤦🏿♂️. Seems like every few hours I'm rebuilding. It's amazing when running though
Can’t wait for this one
Throw a new iridium plug in it Joe while you can access it easily! They start quicker (saves starter) & should improve performance ever so slightly. Never heard of YFZs goin thru head gaskets? You mustve meant THAT yr you have! Never knew that just '06 oiling issue. Btw, have NGK iridium plugs in both my quads ..'10 YFZ450X & '21 Raptor700R-SE . Even bought a few for an 06 RM85 i just got. Not sure how good in 2-strokes.. anyone tell me if its a waste of $ or not. Thanks. - Ohio
That thing sounds bad ass on the rev limiter in those woods wow
When the engine is hot and you killed it, should turn the key to on again so the radiatorfan can keep running. 👍
No need, the engine stopped producing heat, and the coolant flow has essentially stopped anyways, so you'd only be cooling the radiator.
@@plkracer lf the fan is on when the bike is brought to a halt, the engine should be kept running until it switches off to keep the coolant circulating round the hot areas of the cyl. head.
You should check the cylinder head for being warped my yfz had a warped head and cylinder
Laser cut copper head gasket- heat up the gasket let it cool a bit then put it on tuque it down .
Gotta actually ride these things. It’s fun o watch you build but I’m sure we would all love to see you actually rip these on a trail or something
Awesome video. I can’t imagine how much money you save by doing all the work.
Damn those bolts are in there. It was quite scary to see that turn in that much
I agree ..really surprised me as well. I take it the bolts were stretched plus he used gasket adhesive too? *I wouldve replaced the bolts its an '05!!! Joe was quite surprised too!* He's getting really good at this. Give him alot of credit..he took alot of flack early on.. has alot to learn yet.. he's 75% the way there tho + well rounded on multi brands is good attribute.-Ohio
that thing is a beast !!
Hey love the videos keep up the good work 👍🏽
I find it amazing that folk just learn to live with the snow, it would really piss me off if we had to put up with the stuff for more than a week as we do in south of UK once a year. its like the end of the world if it lasts more than that.
just cant get my head round it why would anyone want to work live and earn a living in the stuff. lets go ice fishing.......no chance im building a damn fire
Man, you gotta consider moving to a warmer climate .... no reason to suffer every winter and having only 2 months of summer ... it gives me flashbacks of sufferimg in buffalo ny ... shoveling snow is a sucker move 🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶😪😪😪
What, and not drive snowmobiles?
That thing sounds like a monster
check your thermostat that gasket looked as if it overheated
i said it in your other video
I recently bought a 400ex and I was wondering if you could just tell me if you know this issue. The issue im having is that when I have the throttle about halfway pushed it makes a rattling sound, its in all the gears. Do you know what this issue is? I would really appreciate it, thank you
My dream quad this and a 250r my raptor got stolen right out my carport
Wow she looks & sounds awesome man 💪🏻💯
You got some patience man
For the win !
Also you need a case saver
Dang man you are tuff riding in those conditions
You should put 2 vintage sticker on all the four-wheelers u fix
Hey Joe. Never use your torque wrench in reverse, and if using it to set a certain degree, set the wrench much higher than initial torque setting or its better to use a breaker bar. The head bolts stretch and should be replaced every time they have been torqued. They may or may not last. Either way good luck.
Lol these engines are nothing of like a car
@@connorbryan1663 really. Hmm. Tty is stretching the bolt. Do you actually know or just assuming. I build these daily
Benjamin i dont wanna be rude but you keep correcting someone either it be joe or someone on the comments on atleast every video... really?
@@crboi6440 I'm just trying to help and give good advise. I mean zero harm. Joe is still a rookie but he has gotten so much better. I don't need to watch his videos as I learn nothing. I like Joe and support what he does and his willingness to go above his skill level and learn. I'll correct myself, Joe has inspired me to make my own videos. I guess if you don't like my comments you can give them a thumbs down. I don't mind.
This is not comercial aviation maintenance bud. Changing a bolt every time u torque it is a waste of money imho.
Find out when it is spring and it is warmer temps. Think its good for now though...
Let’s see how these yfz’s stack up against other fast machines
They are #1. The only sport/race quad you can still buy brand new. That says alot! Was best selling thru yrs cause Yamaha is all around the best @ performance 4-stroke tech ..followed closely by all others. You may have never owned one.. but since the fuel injected models ('09) nobody's been close. Watch old online tests/reviews.
@@Davido50 I have one with a 480 kit
@@datssan Wow.. that must be sweet. Who makes the big bore kit? May need do that when my '10 YFZ450X Bill Ballance finally needs rebuilding. Motor still runs great tons compression. I'm really big on maintenance tho.
@@Davido50 a company named alba
Great video 👍
Aha Finally got something running right u need to to look in to jetting on ur 2 strokes tho 👍🏻
The pressure from the cap keeps the boiling point of the coolant higher.
I like to add a switch to the thermo fan so I can turn it on constant.
If you had to do this something is wrong. Yamaha(and other good manufacturers) do lots of testing in all conditions before specifying the final cooling system components.
@@bananabrooks3836 nothing wrong just an add on for occasions in the real world-example - tight trails on hot days-night riding where u have to leave lights on and bike running
I love your video i’ve had three of these bikes that had the same issue with having to jumpstart please figure out why we have to keep jump starting
Are you exhaust valves in spec? Too loose, and the decomp doesn't work.
Cooling systems work under pressure you must bleed all the air out of the system top it up and put the radiator cap on never run the motor for extended periods of time without the radiator cap on
hell ya had it tore down ya should put the new base gasket on it as well hell ya had it tore down
If that front wheel locks up again cheak out the wheel baring happend on my buddys wheeler going down the road and if the head gasket blows again cheak how long the head bolts are supposed to be mine stretched and I put 8 head gaskets in and I couldn’t stand it
My YFZ 450 Big bore won't start but back fires out the air filter. Any idea what could be causing that? Thanks
You should try buying a Polaris outlaw 525 they are very fun and I have one and it is very fast just if you could look for one
Same as 450mxr. And you can just put a 525 cylinder and piston on one.
I really want one!! It's sick!!
Sounds healthy now
To keep it from blowing u should put some gasket glue on them yfz I had to use gasket glue with the gasket and it won't blow Nomore
Man I miss my yfz450. Thing was minty after I put some time and money in it then everyone I know decided to sell their quads and left me with no where else to ride lol I’ve heard that 2022 or 2023 will be the last year the yfz450 will be imported to the US I hope it isn’t true
Question why do quads have a thump throttle instead of a twist ?
They r mostly on motorcycles bc u dont use the bars to turn as much u use lean. So on a quad u tend to twist as u try to turn the bars and it can make for a whiskey throttle situation. Some people put them on race quads. I feel like u can rev them up a bit faster than a thumb throttle as well or at least it feels that way.
advice i was thinkin 700 or 450 450 seems to be plenty the new 1's look great any problems havnt heard yet 700cc or 450 cc ? and whats more reliable
If you’re going to trail ride, the 700 is worlds better for that. The 450 is just a track machine.
What’s the link for the one you bought cause I need one
haha, couldn't get away from the stupid ramp falling on you.. lol
How much you want for this 450? I live in Wisconsin and am interested.
Where do you get those gloves
I like your Yamaha...
Did you really go 180 degrees, or one half turn more? Seems like a lot. Why not use torque instead of degrees of a turn?
Your torque readings are off because you are using a extension, u should look into it
Sounds likes she's kicking ass lol I never had a 4 stroke quad b4 but you could b changing my mind lol 😆 have you ever thought about putting a v twin engine in a quad maybe like a sv 650 engine or something similar. Think it would b interesting 👌😁lol
That engine makes alot of chatter, how was the crank ?
I bet the heat that comes off that header isn't helping coolant temps with that lower hose
2 vintage is always out of breath lifting a head off of a cylinder... Good thing he never has to lift a bundle of roofing shingles
If only you ride the 2 strokes as hard as you rode the yfz lol
your starting issues is due to low battery amps need more cca not ca
Any time you rebuild an engine, you're supposed to break the engine in slowly. Probably why the head blew after you just rebuilt it.
I can’t get my bottom timing mark to stay in place
@Whoop!
The fan didn't come on but the coolant was boiling 👀
The pressure keeps the boiling temp down, the rad. cap should be ON when the engine is run.
@@bananabrooks3836 it should still be above the 90-95°c mark to cut in the fan in my eyes. I get what you're saying though but that coolant for very hot very quickly and I think the sensor would have caught that... If it works.
Definitely a athena jug can tell by the coating they use that coating on most cylinders
The not turning over problem I have no clue what that is my kfx 400 does the exact same thing🤷🏻♂️
I'm thinking it is the one way bearing.
@@2vintage kinda what I’m thinking at this point
Check and see how hot the starter motor gets after like 10 or 20 seconds of cranking.(which is a long time). Rebuilt/chased a problem on one of my quads. Starter, although working, was going bad. It really shouldn't get real hot. Bay area powersports has limited parts but very cheap.
So now how many CC's you rocking 🤔
I’m guessing 480
why the fuck do you have to rev it to redline with every quad / dirtbike
What jets did you end up putting in?
178 55 ... . Or just watch the damn video.

I don't like four wheels bikes man 😕
