At first I thought that if the bike had a decompression mechanism that decompression mechanism was stuck open a little ways, but didn't know that the valves being set wrong slightly would make such a huge impact on its compression, as a 2 stroke guy I'm glad to learn this about 4 strokes
Absolutely a great score, I look forward to more of your content .. valve train is the reason for so many people getting stumped and giving up, you are doing great work just keeping it simple, that's why you succeed... Don't ever overthink it, because then you have gone past the problem.
@Nasty Habitz I can't tell u how many videos I've watched on my ATV or dirt bike. I learned so much from UA-cam it's not even funny. And Facebook groups. But mostly from having to start from scratch on my old 88 kx80. It still throws people around somehow. No shocks either. I never got to fixing those. But she hauls asss. I call her the 2 kick bandit. Almost every time. 2nd kick does it. Bbbrrrrp. 😂 Gotta love it. Taught myself how to ride on it, matter a fact. Now I'm back in to ATVs. I wanna get a king quad for whatever reason
Vinny is amazing! Once again he diagnosed the issue on first sight. If you recall, the first thing he did after seeing the bike was to take a couple of dumps. He was indicating that the exhaust system, and specifically the valves on the exhaust side, were okay. But he did NOT eat or drink anything, indicating that the intake valves were closed or too tight. He blows my mind how accurate he is with his diagnoses! Was he born in a shop, descending from a long line of mechanics’ dogs? 🔧🐶
I've watched about 20 plus videos and have learned something from each video. The troubleshooting and diagnosis are on point. KEEP DOING YOUR THING I SUPPORT THIS CHANNEL.
Love my yzf, I used to ride a ktm sx-f and thought it was the best bike ever made til I started riding the yamaha. yzf has the best power curve of all and by far the best handling and most bulletproof. Best 4 stroke 250 ever made in my opinion. This bike, with new forks and top end rebuilt, will outlive most of us I bet..
There's an inexpensive tool for removing the caps that you've been using a screwdriver and hammer to remove. The tool has 4 different size ends and doesn't require the use of a hammer. It will leave no marks on the caps.
I'm starting to see a re-occurring theme in all these videos, it appears most people have no idea how to adjust valves or don't seem to know thats a thing they need to do lol. Love these videos, learned soo much from them!
Enjoyed your talking through the logic of each step. I work on my own bikes, but i also help friends and am always up for learning more efficient troubleshooting.
top quality mechanicing .. the result speaks volumes well done . I was 1980 Donnington GT championship champion one liter class.my hillman imp based engine was overhead cam and the cam clearances were a regular adjustment .. for optimum performance . i assembled a decent set of shims to achieve the correct clearances .
I like the sound of this one, my kind of bike. Your videos are great. It seems like I’ve watched you grow up on UA-cam I’m 59 so I can say that stuff. I mean it in a positive way. Keep the videos coming. God bless you and your family.
First video of yours I watched. Very impressed. Great camera angles, and not boring or drawn on like some others. Very happy to actually see the bike ride after!! Subscribed instantly!
Stole another one ! Kudos on the diagnostic steps. Also thanks for sharing the hopped up cam and gear timing marks. The valve shim calculation seems to be a frequently overlooked step when improving performance of a bike engine. Plain lazy.
Nice work there Mr. I'm really glad to see your thorough approach [professional]. Especially since the buggy project that had gas in crankcase Yowza. Inspiring
Brings back memories from when I was a kid with my 88 XR80 in the summers. I sold it and bought a 1990 RM80. What a completely different animal that RM was lol. The power band was vicious
Another great video. Great diagnostic skills. Your videos are well paced. You've become one of my favorite channels. Thanks for all your hard work. I've learned so much from your channel.
Just got a 1980 KX 80 in the shop. Immaculate bike, no compression. Top end shot, 1/2 " hole in piston ringsin pieces, new one on me. I'll get her fixed tomorrow. I have a new top end on shelf already. Got last year for that old popper.
My 2003 yz 250f always needed valve adjustments. Once the compression started going(getting easy to kick without the compression release lever, and hard to start cold ) , adjusted the valves and she was good to go for another summer.
Great work work man!!! But that thing defenitly has a hanging idle , wouldn’t recommend running like that , possibly jetting or an air leak . I also bet that mid body carb gasket has never be replaced !! Please read this ❤
I can’t ever seem to fix those on my own. I have a street titled Honda dual sport with a keihin. I completely rebuilt the carb, inspected the intake boot and the air box connection to the carb. Still hangs terribly. I’m considering taking it to the shop since I can’t figure out where it’s leaking.
I would love to see a Q&A to know what his neighbors think of him always riding bikes and contraptions down the road. I would also love to know if any of the people you buy the machines from buy them back after they have been fixed. Also what do you do with all these machines after you have fixed them.
hi tomspiffles have you become a flat earther yet? If not I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. I got it in my about tab.
I am sure you have heard this before but troubleshooting and teardowns on newer models ( something this decade) are much more in demand. Also a lot more to get into but the ROI for a 2020 2 stoke is ridiculous now a days. Plus you cant beat the engineering of a new design, especially the Austrian brands.
Nice video always love those easy fix cheap finds. You’re holding the quart of oil wrong. If you turn it 180 degrees so the angle is facing down it pours smooth and won’t gulp. The oil sits low in the angle of the quart and the air goes in through the gap at the top, everyone holds quarts upside down and makes the oil gulp out instead of a nice flow nice and smooth how it is designed and supposed to.
Sounds a little low on the idle side of the fuel settings? Seems to be not dropping down to idle like it should. Remember to rich is better than to lean especially in the break-in process. Good job catching the mistake on the Eng. valves.
Was just coming to see if someone was complaining that you didn't wash it. And then....you washed it lol. I like the barn dust buys lol. Makes the OCD fans panic.
Seems like you could have a "yard sale" with all the bikes for sale at same time. Springs coming and demand for bikes should be high. Too much money tied up in depreciating inventory
I'm guessing he makes more off of UA-cam then he would with a shop. Ofcourse you could do both at the same time Joe. Make it a stipulation of working on their stuff that you get to post the video.
Great pick up Joe definitely a nice purchase you ended up with a great looking bike for the price the oil that was in this was a insane amount that why I like the way you check everything have a smashing evening mate enjoy the yz 250 #2Vintage
Does anyone else miss the top speed runs? Joe we need to occasionally bring back the top speed runs at your parents! I know it won't be very frequent but just occasionally with some cool machines like this and that tricked out YFZ450.
Thanks for another informational video. Always a learning moment and a nice ride. The hardest-working man in the Dairyland, except for maybe Aaron Rodgers
You don’t need to remove the whole cam chain tensioner. You can just remove the cap and stick a small screwdriver into the tensioner. Turn it clockwise and it will stay all the way out. When done, turn the screw counter-clockwise and it will re-tension the cam chain. Much easier….
Joe I think you should consider working on some newer bikes too! It would be so cool to see you work on newer tech and engines and make profit off it would be good content as well. Great job again Joe!!!
If you ever buy a used 4stroke motocross bike that doesnt run.....90% sure its the valves. No one gets them adjusted after purchase, no one checks clearances, no one knows how to fix them.
If valves are zeroed out I pull them, cut seats and install new (usually stainless). Shimming is just a bandaid to intake valves being cupped and eventually losing heat transfer to valve seat then valves snap.
I wouldn’t ride it two feet until I went over complete bike .safety first .that bike looks tired and never been taken care of except for the new plastic he put on it just before you showed up.I like that he had 4 guys coming to look at it .never heard that before .lol
Yep motorcycle pretty easy to fix , 1994 was the last time my bike was ridden and came with water in the motor and a sandwich in the air box and it runs fine now. Easy peazy
One thing I like with the carwash is to make bearings spin at like 100000rpm , If that bearing pops off and explodes - you didn't need that bearing anyway
uh oh I didn't see you crack the timing chain tensioner cap loose before loosening it from the cylinder! Also, that intake cam looks kind of special. I know I've commented this before, but I love those 5 valve yamaha's! The center intake valve always tightens up first
Ya know your missing a whole top motor mount too? That's what the holes are for in the top of the cylinder head on the backside of it by the carb as well as on the frame right above the hole in the cylinder. Also you cannot accurately get a compression reading on these as they have an automatic decompression release built into the exhaust camshaft so it will always show low on the gauge.
Man I’m always excited when Joey posts man you should get modern sled and fix it up and sell it haven’t seen you do a modern sled yet in the 2000s n up

Even looser valve springs will cause a huge leak.
Absolutely a great score, I look forward to more of your content .. valve train is the reason for so many people getting stumped and giving up, you are doing great work just keeping it simple, that's why you succeed... Don't ever overthink it, because then you have gone past the problem.
Valves are everything in a 4 stroke. I bought n learned on an 88 kx80. Then moved to 4 stroke just cause I didn't like carrying the oil
@Nasty Habitz I still haven't learned it yet but when I have to I'll learn real quick. So many times I thought it was valves n thankfully it wasn't.
@Nasty Habitz I can't tell u how many videos I've watched on my ATV or dirt bike. I learned so much from UA-cam it's not even funny. And Facebook groups. Simple process if your a mechanic like him or me.
That's greenhorn shit.
Tbf it's wot you think when you no how 4stroke work

Awesome find for such a simple fix. She's is loud, but sounds like a true thumper at idle.
First video of yours I watched. Very impressed. Great camera angles, and not boring or drawn on like some others. Very happy to actually see the bike ride after!! Subscribed instantly!
It is drawn out, could easily cut 10 minutes.
No parts required is always a plus. Good job
The fixing part between the engine and the frame is missing.😉
I have flipped more bikes that I got cheap just because someone didn't have wires connected or valves adjusted. It truly amazes me.
Another great job Joe. I'd bet the compression increases a bit after the rings seat.
Yeah I'm sure it did
Stole another one ! Kudos on the diagnostic steps. Also thanks for sharing the hopped up cam and gear timing marks. The valve shim calculation seems to be a frequently overlooked step when improving performance of a bike engine. Plain lazy.

Probably needs a mid body carb service…hell of a wandering idle …but other than that great find find sir 👍
Amazed about how you are able to tackle any problem with those bikes again and again. But practice makes perfect I guess.
Just got a 1980 KX 80 in the shop. Immaculate bike, no compression. Top end shot, 1/2 " hole in piston ringsin pieces, new one on me. I'll get her fixed tomorrow. I have a new top end on shelf already. Got last year for that old popper.

Too funny... :D :D :D

Yeah definitely an air leak!

Start it and spray around carb with brake clean.
Start it and spray around carb with brake clean.
The dog taking a dump at the beginning was funny! Lool! Nice find on this. They can be a money pit if stuff goes wrong.
I had the same bike! I polished the frame brake and kick start along with swing arm and it looked so sick.
I had a nearly identical 2007 YZF 450......fun strong cool looking bike 👍 I think the looks with black and white for a yammie was neat!
Joe you are the man! We all appreciate the troubleshooting best practices...so fun to watch.
You are the man good job 👏 👍 🙌 you diagnose, repair and restore, even though Vinny took a dump, you found gold, keep on brother

At this point what CANT you fix joe lol been watching for years you have came a long way my dude it's great to see all the fruits of your labor bro 👍
Where and how did he learn so much? This man hits every nail in the head
Vinny and I share an opinion on Yamaha.
Great Video showing how the top end of the new 4 stroker MXer's operates. Thanks!

Gonna have to build a separate shop to hold all the fixed machines if you don’t start selling them
Yeah ill have to do that here soon
Seems like you could have a "yard sale" with all the bikes for sale at same time. Springs coming and demand for bikes should be high. Too much money tied up in depreciating inventory
The only guy I know who could invite a crowd of people on a group ride and put them all on a nice ,well maintained machine…
@R T are we not still in an Era of unprecedented resale values?
I need this kind of bike...am in Nairobi Kenya how do I get one?
Best mechanical channel on you tube in my opinion
Dude knows how to fix anything !
She sounds super sweet, Joe. Nice find and great to hear it running! Thanks for this video.
Great to see ya get work on a dirt bike again. Great video as always. Thanks for sharing.
gotta chill out on all the revving, if its freshly rebuilt that means the rings haven't even seated into the cylinder yet but great fix and sweet vid

“Got a present for ya dad”…..🐕💩

Yeah he was. Crazy dog
I know you've probably thought of this but you may want to consider building a shop. :) Such a beautiful bike....super nice find
Yeah I really need to haha
I'm guessing he makes more off of UA-cam then he would with a shop. Ofcourse you could do both at the same time Joe. Make it a stipulation of working on their stuff that you get to post the video.
Excell rims came stock on yz250 and 450 years 06-09
It's always mind boggling to think about how they checked the valves and they actually thought they were in spec.
Happens more than you think .
Exactly why I try to stick with 2 stroke. No time for messin with valves
Some people should really do their research before they mess with valves or just leave it to the people that know how to...
”And That is the valves...They are indeed here, perfect”
its because if the timing is off then it will change the clearance
Great pick up Joe definitely a nice purchase you ended up with a great looking bike for the price the oil that was in this was a insane amount that why I like the way you check everything have a smashing evening mate enjoy the yz 250 #2Vintage

It’s a brand new piston no top speed run ffs 🤣 🤦♂️
Thanks for another informational video. Always a learning moment and a nice ride. The hardest-working man in the Dairyland, except for maybe Aaron Rodgers
Hey bro am in Africa Kenya Nairobi...is it possible to get this kind of bike to Nairobi
Vinny pinching off a loaf at the beginning had me in tears
Man, not sure if you noticed or not but it appears to be missing an upper engine mount lol
You don’t need to remove the whole cam chain tensioner. You can just remove the cap and stick a small screwdriver into the tensioner. Turn it clockwise and it will stay all the way out. When done, turn the screw counter-clockwise and it will re-tension the cam chain. Much easier….

@@jerrywilcox9890 chill out it’s just a suggestion bro😂
he is called 2vintage for a reason!
@tricker7060 exactly I think he should get even older stuff
You got to Love Deegan and the others are flying on this years YZ's!
Tacking a yamaha! You have earned my respect!
Thanx Joe, i was just eating my lunch here in the UK when you zoomed in ov Vinny taking a dump. 🤮HA HA.
Hahaha sorry about that🤣
I feel the air screw needs to go in alil more because it hangs on too long on the D-CELL of the rev.
That’s crazy
It’s 80 degrees here in the south
You are like a surgeon diagnosing a patient well done God bless
See a lot of those with valve issues, rebuilt top end, 99.9% valve, usually intake.
Great repair. I love a happy ending.
Weerrd on that💯😆
If you ever buy a used 4stroke motocross bike that doesnt run.....90% sure its the valves. No one gets them adjusted after purchase, no one checks clearances, no one knows how to fix them.
I said at the very start of video valves were the problem. You just got lucky that it was an adjustment and not a burned up valve.
If valves are open just a little, all your compression goes away. Great Job!
If valves are zeroed out I pull them, cut seats and install new (usually stainless). Shimming is just a bandaid to intake valves being cupped and eventually losing heat transfer to valve seat then valves snap.
I bet the intake valves being too tight made them be stuck open that’s why there was no compression.
I wouldn’t ride it two feet until I went over complete bike .safety first .that bike looks tired and never been taken care of except for the new plastic he put on it just before you showed up.I like that he had 4 guys coming to look at it .never heard that before .lol
Always hold the throttle open when doing a comp. test.
I'm doing a 2Vintage Thanksgiving marathon and just cracked up watching Vinny drop a duce for the camera! Go Vinny!
your first mistake is trying to start it like a 2 stroke. never turn the throttle to start
Yep motorcycle pretty easy to fix , 1994 was the last time my bike was ridden and came with water in the motor and a sandwich in the air box and it runs fine now. Easy peazy
Actually it probably sat longer I’m just guessing by some date codes on replacement parts
Too bad your so young. We needed you! I was great at tearing bikes up! Greetings from Delaware!
I love your dog taking a dump at the beginning of the video lol
Those carburated 250f were powerhouse… had two of those - amazing bikes
One thing I like with the carwash is to make bearings spin at like 100000rpm , If that bearing pops off and explodes - you didn't need that bearing anyway
I have the exact same bike in 2007 model. What a thing of beauty.
Congrats on 300k SUBSCRIBERS!
Good job on getting it running .still idles high.😳😳😳😳
have issue check your throttle cable clean carb. Nice find bro.
Your dogs first impression is correct! You couldn't GIVE me a Yamaha!
What the dog doin at 27 seconds in haha
This thing needs spark, compression, and fuel to fire up.. so let’s check the coolant 😂 made me laugh. Great videos man keep doing your thing
At the 745 Mark I said to myself it ain't got no gas in it...
uh oh I didn't see you crack the timing chain tensioner cap loose before loosening it from the cylinder! Also, that intake cam looks kind of special. I know I've commented this before, but I love those 5 valve yamaha's! The center intake valve always tightens up first

Nice nice bike for the money... Great video... Great diagnosis

Ouch i hope the seller isnt watching the vid. Nice bike and nice fix!
I just got my 2006 yz250f for $900. Previous owner said the valves were in spec and new top end, but mine is much harder to turn over than that. We shall see

The factory tank graphics on that year are pretty cool tbh!
