- Brazil’s supreme court ruled Wednesday that former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has to start serving a 12-year prison sentence immediately, even while he appeals his conviction for corruption. The ruling effectively knocks him out of this year’s presidential race - which he was leading in every poll.
Lula’s imprisonment sends the Brazilian left even deeper into a long-brewing crisis.
And Operation Car Wash - the sprawling corruption investigation that led to Lula’s conviction - has brought down and implicated high-level politicians by the dozen across the political spectrum. But it’s the right wing that has best taken advantage of the crisis that Car Wash caused, forcing Lula’s center-left Workers Party out of power - and now, with Lula almost certainly out of the way, clearing a path to the presidency.
One of the most powerful drivers in the rise of the Brazilian right is the rapid growth of Evangelical Christianity in a traditionally Catholic country.
Evangelicals have one of the most powerful blocs in the country, and high-profile pastors have the power to direct their congregations toward voting for (and donating to) their anointed candidates. That means the Evangelical machine is in better shape than most heading into this year’s elections - even more so now that Lula, the undisputed center of gravity on the Brazilian left, is effectively out of the way.

Yes, I definitely noticed. Why is it people don't make the connection? This is no different from Nigerian pastors fleecing their flocks. And the economy never gets any better when schools, universities, museums, health care, etc. get ignored. Nigeria's solution is to build more churches. Of course, it's profitable!, but not for the people who are already struggling.

People with Christian foundations are as corrupt as anyone else. I agree if 100% of them would actually 100% follow values 100% of time. But that's also true for Buddists; Hinduists; etc. Christianity isn't unique. You see most of ideologies are good on paper for the most part. The difference is only in people. If you bring new ideology to same people; well they are not gonna foundamentally change personalities; they will change surface of their personalities. They will play the role that's now more acceptable ; maybe even benefitial in society. But they won't just change themselves ; because to change actual values it takes a lot more than opportunism. They won't change personal ideology out of blue moon; they will just use new ideology to work with their personal one to fulfil common human need of being seen as a good people. When eyes are not watching though most of them will be same as you always been; as corrupt as always when expecting to not getting caught ; or getting caught but still profit more than lose from penalities.

In the UK, evangelicals are more left wing. It's not the fact that they are evangelicals that makes them right-wing, it's the fact that they are conservative fundamentalist evangelicals. Please, lazy journalism has led to evangelicals being mass stereotyped as right wing nut jobs whereas in reality, this should not be the case. The main reason evangelicals are right wing in the US is due to the majority being fundamentalist evangelicals. Furthermore, they believe in christian nationalism - basically a belief system that america is God's chosen nation which is obviously fucking absurd. In the UK, evangelicals are more swing/left and the only christians on the far right are fake Christians such as Britain First who only say they are Christian as a shield for their racism. It is a sin to have hate in your heart. Therefore the christian right in the US is not acting Christian, simple as that.

The Guardian sometimes posts good articles where you can tell they have actually put research into the UK evangelical church. The Telegraph sometimes does the same too, however the rest unfortunately would rather take the easy option and get clicks. Saying that evangelicals don't hate the LGBT community, aren't racist, run food banks and homeless shelters, don't discriminate isn't exactly gonna sell newspapers.

Why/when did we start using the term "far right" so often?
Are Erica Kokay and the Workers Party "center-left" now?! And ALL evangelic block is "far-right"?! Okay, I didn't expect any different form a far-left media group such as HBO and it's proselytizer UA-cam channel.
Talking from Brazil... The majority of people does NOT think a theocracy is free from corruption (actually, we think quite the oposite of that). But, as it is happening in other places around the globe, the inequality is growing because of huge abuse of power (in a pact made by the rulers and the market) that is hurting mainly people without education and diving in desperate.
The result is politicians like the one appearing on the video - that impose views pretending to do his job and have the courage (or evilness) to say that we didn't had a dictatorship and that those years were great (wen in fact there was torture, censorship, international debt, inflation... With some influence of the USA, by the way).
But to call them far right is shallow viewing... The projects they support break the incentives for entrepreneurs and elevate taxes. It's not far right, guys... Is an aberration that does what the current rulers area already doing (helping their friends and themselves), bus with biblical things in the mix. 0o
Ending this gigantic text (hehehe), Evengelicals are Materialists Espiritualists and that is a strong door to corruption. They have amazing histories about people that found faith and got out of drugs, found jobs and had many other great changes in life. But they function like an big marketing company, finding the "pains and fears" to grow the results. :/
This video is very biased ans misleading. Right-wing views are common between everyone (excepts members of the elite financially tied to the state), not only evangelicals.

Bolsonaro's rich mates? He didn't have influence until the last years, i think that almost no one knew him in before 2010, he got famous by being out of corruption scandals, and also by being against a congresswoman that was defending the rights of a rapist, he wanted to reduce the legal age, so criminals like him could face consequences as an adult. Most of the destruction in our rainforests is illegal. There are criminals everywhere, cops are being murdered. And he is the one tough on criminals. Bolsonaro is still a congressman, more famous than powerful, you can't blame that on him.

Use your brain, he is extreme right wing - that means business interests and wealthy private interests. As for the cops brazilians know they are just one of the gangs in the cities the way they are at present.

We used social media to promote him. He's from Rio de Janeiro, far away from the Amazon rainforest. The cops are not just one of the gangs, they deserve respect, some of them are involved in bribery. Most of them were just young men willing to help people, to fight against the criminals, save people. We always have to choose between far left and left for president, the far left calls the moderate left right, as an insult, if the moderate left is called right, the right is called far right.
We fear a socialist government, like Venezuela. If the left wins here, it will support dictatorships around the world, like cuba and venezuela, and some african countries. They support maduro. If the left wins, Latin America is doomed, even though we Brazilians face a lot of poverty, our country is rich, and our country has a lot of influence. I wish i could flee to a better country. I support him because I use my brain. I don't want to loose the rest, the bit of freedom I still have today.
