The best part of this movie is the simple fact that it stays so true to the graphic novel. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. Frank Miller is such an amazing artist and writer.
Of course the Spartans didn’t fight wearing just leather bikini bottoms. They wore head to toe bronze armor. That gave them a big advantage over their lightly armored Persian opponents.
Ive been to thermoplye it was insane to stand where 7000 greeks( its true there were 300 spartans but they had other greeks with them) stood against the persians for 3 days
That’s right. The Spartans covered the retreat of the rest of the Greek army when the Persians flanked their position. The Spartans died to the last man but bought time for the rest of the Greeks to get away to fight another day.
As a student of history this battle was most important to the future of Europe. There was one place and one place only the Persians would go to after completely destroying the Greeks and that was Western Europe.
The Best Movie of 2006 hands down. I lost count how many times I have watched this movie. I remember watching the Original movie with my father as a kid.
Facts: 1. King Leonidas was around 60 years old when he fought this battle..!! Also today's military schools, teach his war tactics.. 🔥⚔ 2. Efialtis (Εφιάλτης) (The traitor who told Persians the secret passage), actually means "Nightmare" in Greek 3. The phrases below, were actually told by Spartans in that battle a) Get back with your shield, or on it. (᾿Ή τὰν ἢ ἐπὶ τᾶς) b) Then we will fight in the shade. (Εἰ ἀποκρυπτόντων τῶν Μήδων τὸν ἥλιον ὑπὸ σκιῇ ἔσοιτο πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἡ μάχη καὶ οὐκ ἐν ἡλίῳ)** c) Come and get them. (Μολὼν λαβέ) (Actual translation/meaning: "If you find the mental reserves, come and get them") P.S.: Spartans didn't wore full armor because it was heavy and would make them move slow in the battle.. Also their swords, spears and shields where made from various alloys that made them very superior against other armies.. **Dienekes, disciplined, modest, and laconic, at the age of forty, had declined every proposal for promotion and advancement. He remained at the rank of Enomotarch, commanding 32 or 36 men, because, as he said, "…I only know how to count up to thirty-six!" According to the laws of Lycurgus, he could have avoided participating in the campaign since he had no male children. However, he arranged for one of his slaves to claim she had given birth to his son, allowing him to take part. Besides, he was a dear friend of Leonidas, and they often dined together. Dienekes had studied fear and asserted, “If we drive it out of the flesh, where it is born, the mind will simply follow.” His fearlessness led him, along with the Olympic champion brothers Alpheus and Maron, the sons of Orsiphantus, on a daring nighttime raid to Xerxes' tent. They nearly assassinated him, but his generals Mardonius and Orontes moved him elsewhere in time. Dienekes ultimately fulfilled the meaning of his name: "the eternal," "the one who lasts forever," "the unstoppable," through his "excellence" on the third day of the battle. Herodotus describes the furious battle of the Lacedaemonians around the dead body of Leonidas until, after killing Xerxes’ two brothers, Abrocomes and Hyperanthes, they dragged the body towards their side, routing the enemy four times. When they were encircled by the traitor Ephialtes, they retreated to the hill at the entrance of the pass. “...At that very place, they made their final stand, using knives if they still had them, or their hands and teeth, while the barbarians covered them with arrows, not daring to approach them…” Thus, the tragic truth of the unstoppable warrior Dienekes’ statement was confirmed: “...If the Medes darken the sun, we will fight them in the shade and not in the sunlight...” The brave Greeks fought to the bitter end, “In the Shade.”
Leonidas did say "Persians come and get them" when told to lay down his weapons. Also the Spartans are using the Greek Phalanx formation, which created an inpentrable wall. Very effective at the hot gates or Theomaplye in Greek. Allowed him to hold off the Persians for a couple of days until they were betrayed.
'Molōn labé'(come and take them) is apparently the Greek phrase the actual Leonidas wrote in response to Xerxes demand to lay down arms on the eve of the battle. According to Wikipedia. I think that's badass.
"Come and take it" is also a famous phrase from the Texas Revolution, told to the Mexican army when they demanded a town surrender a cannon - a deliberate historical reference to "molon labe".
I have never liked people who hold this movie to a historical standard when it is not a historical movie. It is an adaption of a comic book, and for that story i think it does a great job and is a really fun movie.
These were pure warrior class, They wore the red cloak to cover any signs of wounds or blood. And their women were just as capable in battle. A race born for war. And although this is a little glamorized......it actually happen. When 300 and a few others stood against perhaps over 100,000 of the persian empire, and held them at bay for 2 days....remarkable effort.
Lol, no. Their women were not just as capable in battle. But you're right that they did occasionally help in times of war. No race who has ever existed in recorded history has had men just as weak as their women. Boys and girls are obviously different.

10:09 not sure about the budget, but the workouts were insane. Then report for fight training. Then your individual choreography work, and some gym time. Also, you only get to eat lean protein and veggies. 7 or 8 times a day...
11:39 "Why did they think 300 was enough?" Leonidas had no allusions of victory or returning alive. Also, if you are a few feet back in a hallway with a good buddy next to you, you can hold off a couple hundred for a really long time. Provided you're much better fighters than them anyway.
The phalanx formation was almost impenetrable when done correctly. And depending on the history books the 300 Spartans killed somewhere between 300,000-3 million persians. Some say less but thats less fun to imagine. Oh and the "fight in the shade" bit is an actual quote from the Spartans.
Falls to pieces when flanked which is easier to do with this formation when you can’t pick the terrain it was impenetrable until it’s weakness were worked out and exploited, unfortunately the story is heavily embellished but I’m pretty sure that’s the point of the film it’s someone telling this story to raise moral still incredibly impressive what they pulled off
Actually battle, Leonidas and the Spartans had thier last stand to delay the Persians, to give the Athenians time to mobilize the fleets and to evacuate Athens. The Persians did burn the Acropolis in Athens but no citizens were there. While Leonidas lead the ground force Themistocles led the Athenian fleet to fight the Persians at sea. But when the Spartans fell they retreated.

The reason a fair number of cultures went into battle naked, or nearly naked had reasons. First, to some opponents it was intimidating and unnerving. Second, should a warrior suffer a wound, grimy cloth would not be pushed into, and left behind, in the open wound. They had a better chance of recovery that way.
