Good video. Another windshield worth addressing are the acoustic glass being used in a lot of vehicles now. Not only in luxury vehicles but in Jeep Grand Cherokees as an example. The glass is called acoustic and is thicker with a special layer embedded in the glass.
Nice, the next time I go by a radar speed sign board I may have to take a few minutes out to park down the road in line with it and do a little testing at various distances in and out of the frits.
I just bought a 2017 Rover with a metallic AND heated windshield. My Radar Detector (Uniden R1) only works on the cut out areas (AKA the windshield frits) which are baked into the glass. Off axis radar is a bit more challenging to detect as the radar detector has a small area to "peak" through. Can't justify spending $2k on a remote detector. Thanks for the video!

I never actually tested out my radar detector in my 93 Mercury Cougar. But I could think that my cougar did have some kind of clear tint on the windshield. Because I used it as a daily driver to different construction sites. And I would give everyone a ride for lunch or pick them up for work, and everyone thought my black leather seats would be roasting hot from the hot summer sun. And they actually never wanted to ride in my car, I just said not my problem. But then they found out it actually was very cool-cold refreshing inside even sitting in the hot sun for hours, plus I had the good old air condition. But then!!! There is an accident at a job site. The Job site super visor directed me to park next to the trash bin. I always leave me keys in the car because we often need the cars moved around. But some idiot decided not to have any cars move as he fork lift trash up into the bin, then a bunch of boards fell off to the side because the dude was high on crack and some 2x4 wood pieces fell and destroyed my windshield. The company purchased a windshield replacement, and it has some kind of weird tint at the top. But now my car gets super super hot in the sun, just as bad as the toyota corolla. It's not cool-fresh anymore.

Oh wait. I am wrong. I actually did use my radar dector in my mercury cougar for some moments... Because I remember somewhere in samamish area of Washington State, that my detector had picked up a signal in some forest area and it really saved me a speeding ticket...... First the speed was like 35mph. But there was a spot that dropped to 5-10mph and was like a 8-foot uphill-downhill bump that was like a roller coaster and instantly turned to the left or right. And my radar detector was going K1! k1! k1! K1! before I even seen this crazy bump. I thought my detector was just being stupid because I was way out in the forest area. But I spotted the hump, holy cow, brake-brake-brake! To the speed limit. Just on the other side as I started to take the corner: I spotted the cop. What a save
7:05 I use the Whistler XTR145 and it works perfectly where those dots are at rear view mirror. Problem is suction caps do not grip on those pesky dots and I am not prepared to scratch them off. Anyways! All I really wanted to say is that your tip of using tape over dots has helped me and now suction cups grip well. Thank you for your handy advice. 👍🏻

HI, Is it okay if I put the sunpass (For Florida) mini sticker in the right side adjacent to these frits of rear-view mirror? Sunpass mini sticker contains the small sensor in the center of it.
Since Frits Dots are essentially paint -- Do you think it's ok to use paint remover (or similar products) and Remove the dots? Thus, I can mount unit higher. Any thoughts?
Sorry I dunno. I test radar detectors. I'm not a car modification guy. There's ways of mounting on frits using tape that may be easier and less damaging to your car, but your best bet is to ask someone on the forums.
Vortex, I have 2007 BMW 330xi with 35% on front window, and black strip across the top. I have a Escort Max Im wanting to move from window mount above dash to where you have yours next to rear view window. Question: will dark tint affect Max front that spot? Not sure what BMW's have in their front windows to affect radar.
Has anyone tried mounting their detector to the rear windscreen (obviously facing forward in the centre between the seats). Detectors are illegal where I live so mounting it here would be far less obvious. Will it work or am I wasting my time ?

Is there any other way to test if my winshield dots are metallic or not than seeing if they affect the signal strength of a radar detector? I`d like to know because i don`t have a detector just yet, but its on its way at the moment.
The windshield dots are almost never an issue so I would assume that you'll be fine.. not to mention you can always mount the detector just under the dots if needed so you should be okay. :)
Tint does not affect radar signals. However theres a chance that the tint shop you go to might put metallic tint on your car. Just ask for carbon or ceramic film and it should be fine.
My Bmw 7 series has an UV windshield that blocks all kinds of things. Even blocks my key from unlocking the car from the front. It has a cool spot that seems meant for a radar detector on the dash with a small spot on the bottom of the windshield that allows signals to pass through. Love how the windshield keeps the car cooler but the price of replacement is over a grand. Lol. Glad i have insurance for that.
I have a August 2017 build Tesla Model S. The windshield has a thermal metallic layer with no bumps/frits, nor openings where a detector can function. The metallic layer covers the entire surface and receives no signals from my Valentine V-1. I've used the V-1 successfully for years in my other cars, but had been considering getting an Escort Max 360c because it receives fewer false signals and has wifi updating. Now, I need to reconsider and find a good remote detector instead, and perhaps add laser jammers. Installing a remote radar detector is considerably more expensive, and does not give rear detection, nor directional arrows. Any brand/model recommendations?
