Just viewed your video from a year ago and I must say thank you for the information. I’m an old escort passport radar detector guy from the 1980s. Your video made it very easy for me to catch up a mere 40 years later… i’m hoping to get a new model S in August so a radar detector will be needed. Thanks again.
Wanted to add for newcomers that surface area on your vehicle plays a role in radar clocking. The larger the vehicle, the easier it is for an officer to obtain your speed further away down the road.
Most of the speed cameras over here (Finland) are not radar based, instead they use induction loops in the road. They also always take a photo from the front, as it's (at least for now) not legal to issue tickets to the vehicle, only the driver. Although a ticket will be sent to the owner of the vehicle, they can dispute the ticket at which point the photo is taken under scrutiny. If the driver can't be identified, ticket will be voided. This also means that motorcycles often get a free pass, as they don't have a registration plate on the front. Things have started to slowly change though, as new cameras being installed are radar based. We do have the advantage of police running Ka band exclusively, no K or X band at all. They may occasionally run a laser but it's quite rare. edit: Oh and detectors are illegal to possess in any motor vehicle here. Doesn't matter if it's in use or not. Big ticket time if you get caught.
It’s crazy, I just bought my uniden R8 thanks to you videos and reviews and as I’m watching the vids, I’m seeing my neighborhood and roads I drive by all the time lol. Could very well be a neighbor hahaha.
Think you forgot to mention the biggest benefit of windshield mounted radars: portability. If you ever rent a car or drive a friend's car (or just change cars) all you need to do is swap it over.
We are not allowed radar detectors here in New South Wales Australia, we have fixed speed cameras, mobile speed cameras (privately owned by banks) that park at the side of the road and must have warning signs before and after the vehicle. The Highway Patrol have the latest radar systems. Some states still have the old across the road strips. We also have red light speed cameras, two for the price of one for the State Government !
My redline 360c has suspect range sometimes I get a mile or more and sometimes I have to be right up on the cops. Makes me wonder if I should switch to the uniden r7
A mile is pretty great in tough terrain. That's about the max range I see up here in Seattle no matter which detector I use. Switching to an R7 won't help there. It's also possible officers are using instant on instead of constant on which can affect maximum alert distances too.
was looking at buying a detector and found your channel, and was surprised to see you are also based out of Mill Creek! Crazy coincidence. I recognized the the mcdonalds and starbucks in town center at 0:51
Thanks for the guide, really awesome! I’ve waiting on delivery of a Uniden R7 and I’m looking forward to mounting it on my new C8. One of the things I’m worried about is reaching to the mute button if I mount it lower on the dash, the windshield is heavily slanted so it’s likely I won’t be able to reach it. Are there accessories for the R7 to allow me to remote mute it?
uniden makes a hardwire kit with a mute button you can place anywhere you find convenient. when you look up the r7 on amazon it is will probably come up
Thank you for all your videos. Based on your review of the Uniden R3, I got one and it is a super unit for the price. It works very very well. I use it on my Goldwing and my car.
Good video man, I have my 9500 set up to display freq. I find later model hondas use Ka ~24ish for blind spot. Cops seem to be ~31 Have you noticed this as well (I’m in Canada)
At 9:17 I see a large display showing radar detector output. What is that? Something I can use with my Uniden R3? At my age, the uniden r3 display is hard to read while driving.
You can. I’ve done it before but the only thing I experienced was under extreme heat or cold the adhesive gets super weak and it can come undone from the dash.
Thank you for your excellent analysis and information on everything RD it is really appreciated. I searched scores of videos and pictures trying to get a glimpse of the bottom of an Uniden R3, R7, Radenso XP, Pro M and the like but the bottom of the detectors are rarely shown. Specifically I was interested if the bottoms were louvered so as not to block airflow when mounting. I did finally catch a glimpse of the bottoms on some of your videos but had to watch carefully. If you would like, perhaps in future videos you can show the bottoms of the RD's and be even more through than you already are. Thank you again.
Pennsylvania is looking to give local cops radar guns and we are all worried they’ll be all gung ho to play with their new toys. By the time I’m done my windshield will look like a freaking electronic warfare center
As of 2021 which radar falses less?regular max360 or uniden r7???also i read uniden r7 sucks at laser detection? I also read they are prone to block real police k band with the automatic lockouts?@vortexradar
Do you need to run the Escort live app while driving to utilize the auto lockouts using the Redline 360c? I use waze and sometimes open the Escort live, and sometimes I do not. I've noticed that some signals are locked out, but some just don't. What am I doing wrong? I always hook mine up to mobile hotspot.
Nope. The RL360c can do that natively. Live mostly adds the alert sharing with other drivers, either over your phone with Bluetooth or over WiFi with your hotspot. If it's connected to WiFi already, using the app would just be used to quickly change settings.
I hope you see this and are able to provide some insight. So these products all detect radar, but what is the difference between them and like a laser jammer? Do cops use laser to detect speeding? If so would you need 2 different devices to be fully protected? Also I've seen your videos about scanners being able to detect different radar detectors. Is that just basically saying the cop will know you have a radar detector if their detector goes off? Thanks man and really hope you can answer these questions for me!
Stalker II MDR was and is a great gun. That one you have is none worse for the wear. They were very popular with moto cops. Nothing like the old 34.7 to zap someone. The new ones are both slightly smaller and lighter. FWIW, for some reason, Escort Units really seem to excel on 34.7. The M3 just eats it up.
Live in Texas. After researching I got a Uniden R7. Love it except for one thing: The lighter plug in is too fat to fit in the dash plugin. It does fit in the one in the center console though. I use it in two cars so I want to use the plug in.
I mob a 996 Turbo around country side with some rolling hills as well as in the mountains with hills, curves, and trees. Should I go with the Uniden R7? Roads usually not crowded at all. I'm in Idaho. Early warning would help me the most.
My front windshield has aftermarket tint, will that affect in any way the performance of the radar detectors? Thanks for the video it was very useful and informative.
Weirdly enough, my Uniden DFR7 will alert on every cop whether they are running radar or not. I'm not sure what the cops in my area have in their car that is constantly putting out signals, but it is always KA band.
If the DFR7 is alerting to Ka, it’s because the cops are running radar. It won’t be alerting otherwise. Sounds like you’re lucky to be in an area where the cops leave their guns on all the time. :)
So I checked out your article on the best radar detectors of 2021 and noticed that there weren’t any Cobra detectors on there. Is there a reason for that? My grandfather has had multiple Cobra detectors and they have all worked flawlessly so I consider them to be pretty reliable. Granted I’m only 13 and I am not exactly knowledgeable on every brand of radar detectors.
Hello, i hope this question is ok. I just purchased the Escort max360c before watching this video and looking at your recommendations. Should i return the escort max 360c? Is it any good? I don’t see any reviews over it in detail like the others so i wonder if i made a good decision?
Here’s a review of it from a few years back: ua-cam.com/video/iouLfLZ5FVs/v-deo.html I run one in both my mom’s car and my wife’s car now. It should be a reasonable choice. It’s not perfect, but it’s continues to develop over the years.

That's why KA signal priority on the Unidens is cool...unless the officer is using K....but even then if your getting two Kband signals by the Sign....watch out!
How can I lock out a Ka band. Every time I drive past a dealership I get Ka Band alert for a month now and while I can mute it, how to I lock out? Will mark button on R8 work?
There is an advanced option for that. In mute memory, change from X/K to X/K/Ka. This sounds like a good use case for it, but obviously keep in mind you could potentially lock out a cop if you use it willy nilly. :)
@ thanks for your reply. Figured I would post the question here to give a bump to the algorithm for can older video. I look forward to your video in the latest Redline 360c update.
I've had radar detectors off and on since the late 70s. There was only Xband in those days and they were all constant on. There was a big black box called a Bearfinder radar detector. It was a great detector for the day. The one I had only received Xband. So did the Fuzzbusters but they sucked compared to the Bearfinder. It was the first one that I remember that Really Worked.
In Canada, they are not just illegal but the fines are high. For the «custom installation » if a cops has motives to believe you have one installed, he can get you towed to a garage and have it uninstalled at your own expenses...
What if I put in a mute for a radar speed sign in memory, on a Uniden R7 for instance and the next time I come by there is actually a cop there. Will the detector give me an alert of the cop's radar if shooting?
Can you do an in depth review of the uniden r7 vs valetine one gen 2 very unsure about which one to go with had the v1g1 and loved it but upgrading now I'm unsure which one to go with
@@VortexRadar I do use an android though so would your thoughts change if I'm using the jbv1 app I like in new York had a valetine before so leaning there
Greetings Vortex. How do you think our current detectors will hold up in the next 3 to 5 years considering a lot of new vehicles will running a mix of radar, lidar, mmwave and ect? Do you think they will just false constantly with this new tech? I know they will push out firmware to combat it but that'll also kill sensitivity and range in my IMO. Your thoughts?
Well I don't have a crystal ball so I can't tell you what's going to come down the line, but newer detectors are doing the best job of staying on top of that. Additionally the FCC is mandating that cars move away from K band and towards 77 GHz radar which means newer cars shouldn't cause issues for our detectors.
@@VortexRadar Through the UNECE process, a whole tranche of new technologies are decided upon for mandatory inclusion into motor vehicles in the future; driver awareness (defined), new steering technologies, lane keep and departure and much 'etc'! A TN State trooper got me when I was approaching him from the rear going 96. My Cobra RAD 480i has had issues picking up TN state troopers. Does anyone know what seems to work well for them. I thought it will catch some but not all on KA Band.
Solos are discontinued. They have poor performance, limited features, and lots of falses. They’re super old tech and rely on turning on/off a lot internally to save power which leads to reduced range. In short there are no good cordless options and I recommend staying away.
I'm in carrollton tx and dragon eye laser guns are popping out my old escort redline it's detecting them i got lucky last few weeks ago i almost got clock lucky another guy in front of me got clock...
So basically these will only help if police are out looking for people that are speeding, if police are cruising and don't have their scanners on to check for speed the detector won't detect anything and you can pulled over for other traffic violations? Do police ever cruise without their speed radars on? These also won't help against police using laser correct?
Unfortunately there aren’t any good ones in that price range. You’ll get poor performance and/or lots of false alerts. The R3 is the current best inexpensive one I’ve found, but it’s $299. There used to be the DFR7/DFR9, but inventory issues have caused them to skyrocket in price. www.vortexradar.com/best-radar-detectors/
When i was younger I didn't research any, went out and bought the cheapest one I could find like $45 I think. Drove around for a week worked like it should went off with advance warning everything. Got too over confident and felt I could drive as fast as I wanted. Well one night i got hit with an instant on driving on a two lane country road and i never seen it coming. The detectors green light was on ready for no radar and as soon as I met the car in the opposite lane it lit up all red lights beeping erratically then went back to green all within like a second or two as if nothing ever happened. Next thing I know the trooper turns around and I got my first speeding ticket. I'm like hey that's not very fair! That's cheating lol. Now it's silly looking back. Seemed like I ended up getting more tickets with it than I did without one actually

I don’t need to watch this I just watch it to help out the Channel
haha thank you!
You didn't mention lidar and undetectable. Is there a reason ? Or the term undetectable is a scan? Thank you vortex
What do u have in ur AuDi and who is ur traffic lawyer?
In Canada, they are not just illegal but the fines are high. For the «custom installation » if a cops has motives to believe you have one installed, he can get you towed to a garage and have it uninstalled at your own expenses...
Thank you for the valuable info!
What about if there is a cop that always sits in the same spot. With the automatic GPS false alert kick in for that cop??
Are there any radar detectors with built in laser jammer?
Hi all. Live in Israel. Police use most MPH Bee III radar and laser sometimes. which radar detector will works good against this?
thank you so much. you saved me so much time
What if I put in a mute for a radar speed sign in memory, on a Uniden R7 for instance and the next time I come by there is actually a cop there. Will the detector give me an alert of the cop's radar if shooting?
Looking for a starter radar under $200 for my trip to LA. Would you still recommend the DFR7 or another radar?
Reading is fundamental. Just saw it recommended on your website 😂
lol 👍
do you know any radar detectors dedicated for motorcycles?
Can you do an in depth review of the uniden r7 vs valetine one gen 2 very unsure about which one to go with had the v1g1 and loved it but upgrading now I'm unsure which one to go with
Bsm false alerts are my biggest annoyances
Here ya go: ua-cam.com/video/G9qTluTwFRQ/v-deo.html In terms of BSM filtering, the recently updated R7 is better. geni.us/UnidenR7
@@VortexRadar I do use an android though so would your thoughts change if I'm using the jbv1 app I like in new York had a valetine before so leaning there
For BSM filtering specifically, both are good, but again the R7 is better. JBV1 adds a lot too. I cover that extensively in my videos.
The illegality in Va, do you just unplug or do you have to completely remove it, Va was the only place I got a speeding ticket in my life. thx Greg
Having radar based technologies for certain vehicle functions pegged at particular Ghz frequencies, as you highlight for US, should help for filtering. ITU area of responsibility stuff.
Putting an evil hat on the moment, one hopes these approaching technologies have resilience from 'hackers':-) Imagine the chaos when in a few years Dr Evil decides to crash all and sundry in a nationwide or global attack upon the at_time_driving populace.

Should be interesting to watch unfold
When I first got my beltronics v10 I noticed new cop car like chargers were using ka and crown Vic's were k
Great and Helpful video good job!!
A TN State trooper got me when I was approaching him from the rear going 96. My Cobra RAD 480i has had issues picking up TN state troopers. Does anyone know what seems to work well for them. I thought it will catch some but not all on KA Band.
Who saw the Lamborghini at 3:31
Can a cop clock you with a lidar while driving or does they have to stationary
Lidar only works while the officer is stationary
Hello there. You didn’t mention about wireless detectors. Eg: Solo 3/4/5 whatever. Are they poor products or outdated or something else?
Solos are discontinued. They have poor performance, limited features, and lots of falses. They’re super old tech and rely on turning on/off a lot internally to save power which leads to reduced range. In short there are no good cordless options and I recommend staying away.
hi guys, i have a question? i bought a cobra rad 380 but it doesn't respond to the fixed radars on the traffic lights, does anyone know?
Online it says they are legal in Virginia as long as it isn’t readily accessible to the driver or passengers, what does that mean?
I believe you can have it in your trunk, for example, but not in the cabin. You’d have to double check the details of the law though.
what i would like to know is how good is older radar detectors are like the original escort redline or other top name brands radar detectors in 2022
I'm in carrollton tx and dragon eye laser guns are popping out my old escort redline it's detecting them i got lucky last few weeks ago i almost got clock lucky another guy in front of me got clock...
How do you unmute?
So basically these will only help if police are out looking for people that are speeding, if police are cruising and don't have their scanners on to check for speed the detector won't detect anything and you can pulled over for other traffic violations? Do police ever cruise without their speed radars on? These also won't help against police using laser correct?
All the time, yeah
Got the cobra 480i. What do you think about it as a first one.
I’m not a fan, but better than nothing maybe?
Can you explain why you don’t? Dang maybe I’ll return it
@@VortexRadar looking for a budget around that one around $150
Unfortunately there aren’t any good ones in that price range. You’ll get poor performance and/or lots of false alerts. The R3 is the current best inexpensive one I’ve found, but it’s $299. There used to be the DFR7/DFR9, but inventory issues have caused them to skyrocket in price. www.vortexradar.com/best-radar-detectors/
@@VortexRadar thanks vortex I think I’m returning it and getting the r3
