  • Mount Coolidge Fire Tower sits atop a 6,023 ft mountain in Custer State Park in western South Dakota. Built in 1939, the stone tower is still used as a fire lookout today. You can see Black Elk Peak, Mount Rushmore, and Crazy Horse from the top. On clear days you can even see the Badlands which are 60 miles east! You can drive to the tower from Memorial weekend into September, but the road closes during the winter/spring for safety reasons. It is a nice walk during those times the gate is closed.

I picked up your trail guide at the Visitor Center in Hill City. Very impressive. Thanks.

I went and got the TASD at your office the other day. Wanted to say HI but you weren't there. Perhaps that's when you did this hike. Did you notice the trail across from Mt Coolidge on top of Heddy Draw, on the right side of it? Have hiked it a couple of times, but not down into the draw. LOL didn't want to have to climb back up it.🥴

I’m sorry I missed you! I have not done that trail yet. I will have to check it out!
