When in doubt, I ask myself, "What would Jason Blaha do and think in this situation?"
Then I do and think the complete opposite.
This is the key to perfect mental health for the modern man.

“The more I love humanity in general the less I love man in particular. In my dreams, I often make plans for the service of humanity, and perhaps I might actually face crucifixion if it were suddenly necessary. Yet I am incapable of living in the same room with anyone for two days together. I know from experience. As soon as anyone is near me, his personality disturbs me and restricts my freedom. In twenty-four hours I begin to hate the best of men: one because he’s too long over his dinner, another because he has a cold and keeps on blowing his nose. I become hostile to people the moment they come close to me. But it has always happened that the more I hate men individually the more I love humanity.”

I had been looking forward to hopping back on once I have a kid, but honestly watching your videos has brought me back to reality that I don't need to take drugs to enjoy lifting, compete in sports that don't matter, and appreciate my body.

We are surrounded by instant gratification. Junk food, social media, pórn, videogames, and that has made us numb to everything else.
Why would you invest in your life when you can get instant satisfaction from these things?

  • @lorenzodangelo7402
    @lorenzodangelo7402 5 місяців тому +38

As I was listening to this, I realized that a lot of things you talked about were about "zooming in". We're still animals, we have a really hard time seeing things in a very large scale. Social media does exactly this: it gives value to everything and everyone, be it in the past, the future, 1km from us or 200km from us. So part of the doom scrolling is the FOMO that we get when we get overwhelmed by so many things outside of our personal scale. When our mental health is low, we all should just zoom in on ourselves and think about the real and tangible things we should be worrying about, as with all the things that we're having right now, without trying to go beyond what is outside of our immediate senses (be it in time or in space).
Live in the present, but live in YOUR present.

not even 5 minutes ago, i was cursing my existence and after reading this I have come to remember that it's really a cycle:
      1) bad luck or whatever makes you unhappy
      2) you forget to focus on yourself
      3) you make yourself more unhappy and unable to do anything
The best times of my life I literally was unconcerned with what others thought or were doing. The worst times, usually at parties (and something I have been able to change) I was too concerned with others.

    Let us raise a glass
    Let us drink
    To this creature called man,
    Good times,
    Evil times.
Both repeated in an endless cycle, On this spiral of time,
    where a lifetime
is far too long for peace
yet far too short for war.
    That is why we yearn.
    That is why we foster.

41:00 excellent point. Procrastination is closely associated with anxiety. At the moment you start dreading doing something (getting anxious) just do it right there and then. Make that a rule. Like NH says, bend anxiety to your will and make it work for you. The absence of anxiety is almost impossible, so just embrace it, stop trying to figure out why you feel anxious, supposedly to AVOID getting into those positions that make you anxious. However, this is counter productive because situations that make you anxious are the most beneficial when dealt with

Great stuff, Nat. I;m about halfway through and wanted to add something: there's no rush on this self-care journey. I am on the EXACT path you described: I take very good care of myself including body building and stress control. As iI progessed on my journey, i began helping others in my family. Preached the benefits of health, suggested limiting media, ecouraged creative exploration as a coping mechanism. This went on for years. I just turned 40 and have been accepted into my county's volunteer search and rescue academy so i can help those in my community. Like i said, I just turned 40. It took me 20 years of being an adult to figure these things, but the habits and skills learned are ROCK solid and unshakeable because of the time I ALLOWED it to take. Anyway, great video, pressing play now to finish.

What do you think about gratitude journaling?
    Notes:
    1. Yourself
    2. Friends/family
    3. Community
    4. Country
    5. The world
Delaying gratification dopamine with effort and discomfort (training, working your on craft) for pleasure
Nowadays instead of being hunted by the tiger, we need to hunt the tiger
Be grateful for what you have, instead of thinking about what you don't have.
Your ancestors worked in the mine so you could have a comfortable life
If men don't have any struggle (struggle fills a man's heart) there will spawn a problem in your head out of nowhere
Anxiety is your brain blackmailing you to do something. Bend it to your will
Accept negative emotions, after positive emotions, there will be a fall into the negative.
When you feel negative emotions, there are 2 options:
    1: you feed them
    2: you shut them down
    choose the second option.
When you feel positive emotions that will make you grow, there are also the same 2 options. choose number 1.
you will inevitably feel the urge to go pleasure-seeking or to feel mad about something, but YOUR responsibility is to react properly to your urges.
Anxiety makes you worry about the future, which takes you away from the presence
You need to find pockets in your day when you are doing something while being present in the task, without any music or listening to a podcast (eating dinner in peace, and even just training while fully present)
Whenever you can, take the time to be with people your family, and friends.
Modern technology has replaced our lives and made us sadder since interpersonal relationships are life. Guess what Snapchat, Instagram, etc.
People can't relate to one another, because we aren't even speaking to each other in real life, we are just looking at our phones.
The more you are present with people and are talking with people in real life, your happiness is going to skyrocket.
Your health is to most important thing (think back to the times when you were sick, and only wanted nothing else but to get better)
Every morning, say to yourself that you are in good health, you can walk, you can train, some people would wish they were in your position.
Going into nature and being grateful for nature will make your mental health skyrocket
Since we have literally lived there for over 150.000 years. Now we are living in concrete instead.
The closer you live to nature, the happier you will most likely be. Think low-density population zones
Books are the best way to escapism. Books don't have an algorithm that echoes your belief over and over in your head. Reading books requires effort, and effort makes you happy.
    Summary:
    1. Be careful of what you let in your brain. If you consume content that makes you mad or anxious, it will make your life worse.
    2. Be careful of adding too many things into your life, since these are probably the ones that are going to make you miserable
    3. Stop looking at your neighbor's plate when there is food on your own plate. Make sure the only things you can get mad about, are things you can change.
    4. Happiness is an act. Keep doing the habits (good habits) that push the bad ones away. The dark thoughts are always
here, but your habits are what keep them away. For example, if you stop training for a week you will become sad (if you like training a lot)
Happiness is a choice, you can choose to be happy with what you have and the people you have around you.
Don't let your happiness depend on an item or action, because after you get that item or do that action, you are fundamentally the same.

Hi NH, I am a new viewer, just turned 16, and really appreciate your advice. In this video, i found you repeating some of the thoughts and ideas from a book im reading. It's a dystopia called "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. I strongly recommend you read this book. While i am only halfway through, im absolutely blown away by how spot on this man was in 1930.
He predicts doom scrolling, instead calling it a drug named stoma and how the state minipulates the drugs in peoples brains to prevent thinking, the eradication of meloncholy moments, the death of the influence from mothers and fathers and insertion of morals from outside sources as well as so much more.
I dont know if you take book requests or if you already have a couple of books lined up at all times like i do, but this book syncs with what you're saying and adds to it. Again, thanks for the advice.

Ok so as psychology student and mental health enthusiast I want to comment on a bunch of things NH says here
    1. indeed sitting with your emotions and accepting them is how you healthily deal with negative emotions like anger, fear and sadness. Avoiding them by avoiding situations or numbing yourself by taking drugs or being a workaholic won’t work
    2. NH says that anxiety usually tells you you need to change something or take action. That is true - to a degree. It depends on whether the action you are taking is making your life better or worse in the long run. For example if I get anxiety because I feel insecure around women and I take action by going to the gym a reasonable amount of time per week - that might work for you, if you actually decrease your insecurity that way. But if you already going to the gym 4 times a week and still get anxiety, then going 6 times a week won’t fix the anxiety. Then you probably need to do something else, like talking to women you find attractive. But other sources of anxiety are better helped by attending the feeling than the situation. For example if you are scared of an upcoming exam and you already study a good amount each day, then more studying won’t fix the problem. But trying to manage your anxiety by going out in nature for a walk will probably help.
    3. emotions need time and space to be processed. If your life is already optimised to a large degree and objectively good, you don’t need to fix elements in your life, you need to learn to process emotions.
    4. gratitude is an excellent tool to improve your life.
    5. (social) media is really the devil. Avoid if possible.

Great video. One thing I thought after it is how also escapism can be really toxic in other things besides social media. I say this not only about obvious things like games, or toxic obsessions, but for things like music as well. Recently I have tried to put myself away from listening music every day and try living more without the earbuds. I believe it has come a long way to help me realize certain things I didn't notice about the spaces around me, as well as helping internalize and debate certain things in my head which have helped me get some introspections on certain situations, in times in which I would be just numb to the world to music. This can be extended to so many other things, although I believe sometimes it may be dreading to stay with yourself for so much time; but that's something I'm still not sure about and I feel like life will teach me more about as it goes on. Anyway, thanks for the video, really insightful.

Any tips for someone who wants to quit music but keeps falling back?
I realised that I also use it as escapism or as a way to experience emotions artificially, which I don't believe is healthy...

    • @user-ff3vc5wd4j
      @user-ff3vc5wd4j 2 місяці тому

@@stevensen6541 Okay, I ended up writing like 3 paragraphs to have it all lost because of UA-cam glitching out and erasing everything, but I'll try and give a rundown on what I believe on the topic again.
Listening to a lot of music, surely to an extent is unhealthy; although I'd say to not treat it as a problem, but rather something to learn what you enjoy about it and what is healthy and what isn't. Less in a sense of the type of music but way more on how it affects you and especially when you listen to it. Because if you really like music, it will be really difficult to just not listen to it. Also, in a sense, we as humans need some coping mechanisms, we just simply can't live without them. Not only because it is part of what keeps the machine and us going but also because these hobbies, activities or things you do shape meaning for what's around you based on their essence and their meaning for you; Thus, being necessary in the modern world, as if we just get left alone to our tribalistic nature we end up becoming purely animals and irrationals (it's similar to the concept presented in NH's 3hr long video on NoFap which is great too on the topic of addictions and etc). In the other hand, music has become something dangerous as a coping mechanism because of the nature of our fast-paced modern world. In the sense that we are always expected not only by ourselves but by others as well to be doing everything, every time. This already gives us small spaces of time to work with ourselves (in matters of internalizing things to yourself and literally being in a state of boredom, with yourself, which is pretty rare nowadays). This, coupled with the fact many people view listening to music as a replacement of boredom, of stillness, or a state of being connected to yourself and what you think, believe, and the reasons behind it, makes it way more of an addition to the addiction to the dangerous fast-paced lifestyle that we have on our modern world rather than a way to escape from it. So that's where the problem lies in my opinion. Which is not that music can be unhealthy as a whole as a coping mechanism, but rather so that our modern world incentivizes it as a way to maintain that fast paced momentum for contemporary life. If you think about it, 90% of the times you listen to music you don't relax. Even if you put the calmest of music's in the world, you still are in a constant exercise of listening and processing the information where your brain just doesn't stop one way or the other. Unless you are able to use music as a way to numb yourself to the world around you (and to other aural information as well), which leads up into other problems completely, like possibly social isolation, reinforcement of social echo chambers and in general an unhealthier introverted way of life (in a setting where addiction to music is set in place and music is needed to isolate yourself to a fake state of comfort). So in general, both ways of listening to music which are most incentivized by the nature of our modern world are unhealthy because they generally lead to extremes, so what I believe to be the key is moderation both ways.
So, if I were to give a tip, or just something that might help with addictive behaviors in general (in this case something that helped me with music), I'd say to just be accustomed with boredom. Literally, because not only it helps you internalize much of what you'd have never thought off during your day, but having some time with yourself, in moderation, is something that I feel is very lacking nowadays with most people. Thus, not only helping you rationalize better on certain behaviors that you might have but you might also start understanding them, and how to better deal with them consequently (consequently, knowing how to deal better with your own addictions). Also, sometimes it's funny and depressing at the same time to just be walking down the street and notice how unhealthy technological addiction has become. In my college campus if I'm walking by 20 other people, I guarantee that if all of them are alone they are either with headphones blasting music or just messing with their phone. Idk, having sometime with yourself multiple times of the day, in moderation can solve a lot of problems, but it isn't a magical pill. If you really have serious problems with listening to music or how it makes you feel it might be of more help to estipulate a plan of slowly getting out of that behavior instead of trying to internalize what you think and feel and just trying to come up with an instant solution. Internalizing stuff and just knowing what really makes you uncomfortable about is a big part both ways, but still your approach needs to be suited for your situation.
      Hope that helped.

For the point at 31:00, I feel like its that south park profit meme. I think its a good analogy for what is being said. The first step of the profit meme can represent a good desire you have that isnt social media, then you doomscroll and get dopamine, and your brain doesnt know what is going on, then you dont feel like doing anything or are weirdly satisfied from the dopamine ,so you dont feel desired to do things you need to do, therefore, no work/much less is done. The word "profit" is profit only for social media companies who secretly preach for the user's addiction.

Most people in my class are wannabe gangsters who dont talk with anyone outside their interests, are on tiktok 24/7 and worst of all, can barely carry on a conversation whenever I speak to them. I myself am not even a very social person but atleast im not scared of expressing my interests, y'know? I only know some people that I actually can talk with, even if we have different interests.

42:37 that resonates way too hard for me. I remember those days when I wasn't even able to let myself be sad, to just accept that those things happen. That in the long term destroyed me. Now I can just say that bad days are unavoidable and in some way that just makes me overall happy.
As of right now I'm having a hard time, actually, with a girl I really like. It's hard, really, but I think that these things make the difference. In some way, your video "every love story is a tragedy" kinda goes with that. This video actually depicts what I've felt for so long and what I think she feels right now, and that thing makes her insecure about herself and our relationship. As you said, first work in yourself and then with the people you love. She had a relapse, maybe because of vacation and all the free time you have that makes you feel useless. I hope she gets better, because I also know how it is to feel that bad after thinking you actually fixed it.
I have patience, because I know she's worth it. I find it so hard to believe that I found a girl that I'm not afraid in the minimum of being me and show her even the most virgin tastes like videogames and even ttrpgs (and also being a schizo about working out lmao). Of course, every easy thing must be hard somewhere, and I think we reached that point. I guess just time will decide what will happen. Really love is a tragedy sometimes.
