Decided to do some math on that last one, if opponent let it play out and you get to triple Hautli (also assuming you play creature off of Sram's Expertise) than Cultivator becomes a 59/59 and you swing with everything you can that's a total of 839 damage swinging at opponent (of which they can block 360) so at least 479 damage going through
:-0 Holy Cow, Seth, you have hit one out of the park here! They will be calling this deck "THE Saffron Olive deck" for years! It is really so much better, and more powerful than I thought when I first saw it at the start of the video. If I did not hate token decks so much I might give it a try...LOL...but seriously this is stelllar stuff! It doesn't seem as prone to stalling as other tokens decks, and how you won without drawing your win conditions was very impressive. Especially considering how bad MTGO made you have to mulligan! Well done, Seth!
Haven't watched yet but want to say 2 things. 1-Man crush on Seth and his infectious awesomeness endures. 2-Multiple Cultivators make for some berserk damage totals since they stack. My favourite deck is my +1/+1 counters/tokens deck that ends with a cultivator attack. On the odd occasions of 2-4 Cultivators in play i break out my maniacal Seth laugh and swing for a billion.
Why has no one done this before? The combo cards are from opposite ends of Standard. Cultivator being from Kaladesh and Huatli being from Rivals of Ixalan. I certainly would have forgotten about Cultivator. Great games though! Love your content.
Hey Seth, I was wondering if you've done a brewer's minute on the best route to make a budget deck? I remember the video on how to go making a deck (top down vs bottom up), but with a budget deck I would like your process on it as well. Like do you start with the main 60 and focus on putting most of the budget there, then move to sideboard, or do you construct a non-budget version of a deck (full 75) then proceed to find budget alternatives, etc, things like that?
would eather resevoir be an interesting one of in this? you gain a lot of life and draw and play a lot with huatlis ultimate. or is it to much winmore in this decj
2m18s Hello Marton Stromgald! --- I played Marty as a one-of in my Sligh deck during necro summer. never lost a game where I cast him (he's easy to kill but, by the time I cast him, the opponent would be out of creature kill spells). It was fun to see nationally ranked players pick up the card, read it and figure out what it was going to do next turn.
I tried to build a deck almost the same didn’t have all the pieces and my personal life is just a little to busy to play Magic at this time but things are getting into place again
"I'm sorry opponent [but I'm about to hit you into infinity], I'm sorry oppo-...NOOOOOOOOOOOO!". And then the opponent clicks his fingers and Seth wakes up from his dream before it became the dream of dreams.
Why no Appeal // Authority? It's literally copies 5-8 of Huatli's -1. I was trying this out with that instead of Huatli before Rivals came out, but it wasn't good against Energy. Time to revisit it i guess.
Hey Seth, I was just wondering: how do you think this deck would fair against the more powerful decks in the meta? From the top 5 decks you only played Red, so I was wondering how it’d do against UB, Grixis, Constrictor etc since I’m interested in getting this deck. Thanks!
The fatal push play might not have been wrong. They could've been stuck on 3 lands and worried they wouldn't get to fumigate in time. In that case they drew land land. They also could have drawn fumigate off the top at the last minute.
I felt cultivator was only good when winning or on a board stall when I tried it in magic duels. Bad when behind. But I mostly tested it against the AI. Seems pretty impressive in your games. And I think a lot of your opponents didn't have removal for it which was weird.
Just so you know, the ai in duels improve his draws when it's losing, may take this factor in consideration. The card isn't amazing, but it fit nicely in a token shell
I have no idea what your talking about Seth. The sound is fine. I do not hear any echo of any sort. The one criticism of the current mic one might argue is that you sound a bit softer. However, sometimes your voice can get a bit high, so the softer sound might actually be better for some people.
Being expensive is part of it, but I don't have it in the non-budget build either because we already have so many four-drops. Not sure we can play Anointed Procession, Huatli and Sram's Expertise in the same deck and still have a function curve (at least not four copies of each).
Great video. Can you please encourage historic standard? It's a format that allows cards of any age as long as the whole deck was in standard together eg Faeries and Black Devotion. It's great on a budget and gives Standard playables a home after rotation.
not really. with Archbound Ravager and Skullclamp banned it's only on par with the other decks. Also decks like Abzan (KTK Standard) and Esper Control (RTR Standard) have favourable matchups against Affinity to push its meta share down.
Fish vision: Seth complains like the world is unfair because the walking ballista is/will kill half his board. Reality: It shot down 4 of his 19 creatures. On the SAME turn seth swings in and he actually killed 7 out of 9 of the ballista players creatures out of desperation to not die on the spot. Seth also ends that turn 33 to 4 life in his favor. I don't get it.
There's no real pay off for all that mana in the deck (or in standard really without completely changing the deck) and it's not even a guaranteed hit off the etb because this deck plays a lot of noncreatures
We've already got too many four-drop, so I left it out. It's great with the token producers, and there's probably a way to make it work, but playing Huatli, Sram's Expertise and Anointed Procession (along with stuff like Ixalan's Binding in the sideboard) is challenging.
yeah I've seen Cultivator do some amazing things. It's just that there are more efficient ways to pump your team. not to the same extent, obviously but still
Just how bad a mull to 5 on the play is depends on the match up. In a bad match up it can be practically unwinnable but in a good match up you often have a decent chance.
Cultivator with God pharaoh's gift or scarab god seems super strong for maybe an against the odds or a much a brew. You bring back the cultivator with the God, it has 4 power, you make the servos then when you can swing with everything scarab god is now a 9/9, the 2 servos become 5/5's and the cultivator is a 4/4 that's 24 power swinging at them.
gustavo morales That's why I said "when you can." If you use scarab god ability on their end step then you're allowed to attack with the servos on your turn.
True, but Scarab God decks are usually focused on resurecting stuff on the opponents graveyard. I haven't seen people actively dumping creatures on the graveyard on SG decks.
gustavo morales Why though? Why rely on your opponent to do your dirty work? That's asking for disappointment when you can set it up yourself and do it. Make it a Sultai deck where you mill yourself and set stuff up like normal good pharaoh's gift but you use scarab god and start reanimating your stuff as well as having the option to do your opponents. I hate relying on my opponents to do things though.
Seth. "You could have lived or drew a card. Drew a card. Right choice oppent." Lololol.
Decided to do some math on that last one, if opponent let it play out and you get to triple Hautli (also assuming you play creature off of Sram's Expertise) than Cultivator becomes a 59/59 and you swing with everything you can that's a total of 839 damage swinging at opponent (of which they can block 360) so at least 479 damage going through
!!! :-o !!!
And even that wouldn't have been enough.
53:10 "That was a lot of metalic rebukes"
Doesn't bat an eye when he draws all 4 copies of Ixilan's Binding without drawing any extra cards -_-
yargamafrag and draws 3 the next game...
*Keeps an opener with nothing till turn 4* "This game didn't play out so well".
At least Seth doesn't complain nearly as much as some other unnamed mtg content creators I watch...
Match 1 begins at 8:45
Match 2 begins at 24:05
Match 3 begins at 32:31
Match 4 begins at 42:00
Match 5 begins at 1:01:05
you know the timetags are in the description, right? :)
I don't think the time links from the description work on mobile, but the links in comments do for some reason.
Actually, no. Hadn't noticed.
That's new; glad they've added it.
Philippe Saner the real mvp
Why isn’t this deck named “build a craterhoof workshop”
I like it.
Haste and trample is a real thing, though.
build-a-behemoth
'From a single *pu* Jungleborn pioneer' 5:05
...Who else thought That was mildly amusing
Seth's QPU misaligned.
I love when I'm about to go to bed but MTGGoldfish posts a video
So who's doing this video? The real seth would never not draw cards.
Or pronounce yahenni correctly
"Backup microphone"
That and finding a way to lose from a undefeatable position
zaxadillo...and that
:-0 Holy Cow, Seth, you have hit one out of the park here! They will be calling this deck "THE Saffron Olive deck" for years! Budget Magic: Vintage when?
MC.Creepn ua-cam.com/video/pyFL6jPId3U/v-deo.html
That is the closest we are going to get, most likey
It’s called play it online, mtgo vintage is cheap as shit
"Budget" and "vintage" should never be used in the same sentence
MC.Creepn you've clearly never seen dumpertruck
This deck defeated mono red without removal.
Deck approved 👍
Seems like a really fun deck.
Then again, this is coming from the guy with a GW tokens EDH deck
That was so sweet, Seth. Super cool deck.
36:58
"Gonna go down a regal Caracal for 1 ixalans binding"
*magic online puts the caracal back in the deck instead and now has 61 cards*
I didn't realize that. Maybe we got hit by the infamous sideboarding bug!
It wasn't a bug. It was not dragging it far enough into the sideboard spot for it to take it.
Thanks for the deck tech. I made changes to the shell to thopers and servos only and went 4 - 0 at my lgs's standard showdown. Thanks.
YES. Green-White Huatli is so fun.
20:20 Could opponent have used vizier of deferment on one of servos blocking siphoner to save the siphoner?
Omg I'm loving this deck. Tokens are love. Tokens are life.
Love these deck types. Are there any upgrades you'd suggest?
Thats some real jank seth...
Craterjank Behemoth.
Na dude thats some competitive shit!
SideboardMTG love the channel man
turn2stormcrow thanks.
SideboardMTG i
I'd like to see an upgraded modern version of this deck. Seems decent enough, and the go wide strategy seems pretty decent in the current meta ! :)
Why has no one done this before?
The combo cards are from opposite ends of Standard.
Cultivator being from Kaladesh and Huatli being from Rivals of Ixalan.
I certainly would have forgotten about Cultivator.
Great games though! Love your content.
16:12 Seth pronounces Yahenni correctly.
LOL
i know he said amulet the other day.... not ommulette
But he still said bonded courier
Why not playing appeal/authority as a backup huwatli?
not very budget atm?
Just didn't have room, ,it does work similarly though.
Maybe too many token generators? Or three puzzleknots is too much?
hey seth i think adding a few Strider Harness maybe good to set up a turn 6 kill with harness and cultivator and even better if you have huatli
Hey Seth, I was wondering if you've done a brewer's minute on the best route to make a budget deck? Can you do a non budget version later? Love the combo
Maybe fro the stream, the deck is super fun!
+1 on the non budget. or atleast knowledge of what you would change
Would tillonali's summoner work here?
would eather resevoir be an interesting one of in this? you gain a lot of life and draw and play a lot with huatlis ultimate. or is it to much winmore in this decj
Please let us know how the modifications go! :D
Why no appeal // authority in this deck?
2m18s
Hello Marton Stromgald!
---
I played Marty as a one-of in my Sligh deck during necro summer. never lost a game where I cast him (he's easy to kill but, by the time I cast him, the opponent would be out of creature kill spells).
It was fun to see nationally ranked players pick up the card, read it and figure out what it was going to do next turn.
I tried to build a deck almost the same didn’t have all the pieces and my personal life is just a little to busy to play Magic at this time but things are getting into place again
What would be the non-budget version of this deck?
Would Anointed Procession improve this deck? Maybe a 2 of?
Match 1: 8:42
Link in description doesn't work on mobile.
You mean ramunapless red
*spits soda *
Surprised you didnt try to fit in Anointed Procession
Appeal//Authority and Anointed Procession fit nicely imo
"I'm sorry opponent [but I'm about to hit you into infinity], I'm sorry oppo-...NOOOOOOOOOOOO!". And then the opponent clicks his fingers and Seth wakes up from his dream before it became the dream of dreams.
haha
What is the general line of play vs Grixis Energy?
I had tried making GB GPG exploring cultivator a thing but couldn't seem to make it competitive enough
26:59 ...for the complilation
You should have boarded in fragmentize against the grixis improvise deck!!
Angel of invention maybe? I know it's not budget, I just mean if it wasn't budget, would you play angel?
33:28 something cheap? Iiiit's a land. Dude, that's a freecast🤣
Hey Seth if you see this what do you think about putting in Ornathopters to attack OVER your opponent' creatures?
Why no Appeal // Authority? It's literally copies 5-8 of Huatli's -1. I was trying this out with that instead of Huatli before Rivals came out, but it wasn't good against Energy. Time to revisit it i guess.

Good question! We'll have to play it some more.
What headset do you normally use?
1:13:26 Search for Azcanta : "It's a good card, but not *double-Huatli-emblem good*. LOL poor opponent
What about a (WGB thallid) deck for agains the odds abusing the new huatli? or even a WG, and cut the black.
Thalid's could be fun for against the odds, they are just soooo slow.
The fatal push play might not have been wrong. They could've been stuck on 3 lands and worried they wouldn't get to fumigate in time. In that case they drew land land. They also could have drawn fumigate off the top at the last minute.
did you make this deck yourself? it looks so so fun.
The card isn't amazing, but it fit nicely in a token shell
is there a non-token way to use this Huatli?
I think this deck goes good with Oath of Ajani and Song of Freyalise. Mass tokens, then mass counters and ramp to get faster to Huatli.
Sacred Cat, Sacred Cat what are they feeding you?
One question you might have answered but why not have a one or two of "Hour of Promise" in the deck? Is it not a budget card right now?
I considered it, but we already had four Cultivators and two Regal Caracals in the five-drop slot, so it felt hard to add more.
I have no idea what your talking about Seth. The sound is fine. I do not hear any echo of any sort. The one criticism of the current mic one might argue is that you sound a bit softer. However, sometimes your voice can get a bit high, so the softer sound might actually be better for some people.
Cultivator swing says: IMMA FIRIN MAH LAZAR!!!!!!
is this the crazy cat lady deck?
Ensnaring Bridge in Standard Seth your crazy!!! Lol if Bridge was in Standard I would definitely be playing a 0 card hand deck lol
Is anointed procession not in b/c its too expensive or just didn’t make the cut?
Being expensive is part of it, but I don't have it in the non-budget build either because we already have so many four-drops. Not sure we can play Anointed Procession, Huatli and Sram's Expertise in the same deck and still have a function curve (at least not four copies of each).
During the day he is a jank master of the magic arts. At night he goes back under his bridge- he is the almighty Troll SaffronOlive!!!
Video Starts at 00:00
Green White love, Groovy!
So fun to see it plays, please Seth play this again
Now I really want to build this thing
I know it’s not needed but one of aetherflux reservoir would’ve been great to win with. Maybe an against the odds thought.
At 36:40 he left the regal in despite saying to take it out
new Keyboard, Seth?
1:13:54 Words I never thought I would hear Seth say...
Great video. Can you please encourage historic standard? It's a format that allows cards of any age as long as the whole deck was in standard together eg Faeries and Black Devotion. It's great on a budget and gives Standard playables a home after rotation.
Kieran Duncan one word. affinity
I'll have to look into it. Maybe we'll try it for a GOAT magic episode.
I'd love to another format dominated by Robots!
not really. with Archbound Ravager and Skullclamp banned it's only on par with the other decks. Also decks like Abzan (KTK Standard) and Esper Control (RTR Standard) have favourable matchups against Affinity to push its meta share down.
I wonder how this would have gone in a competitive league rather than the 2 player queue though.
Huatli would probably also work quite well in an oketra's monument deck.
cultivator is great. I goof around with a standard elf deck using cultivator as a finisher.
Path of mettle blow out?
I swear Seth knows when I want to play with a card. I just built a GPG deck around cultivator of blades. GET OUT OF MY HEAD SETH!
Fish vision:
Seth complains like the world is unfair because the walking ballista is/will kill half his board.
Reality:
It shot down 4 of his 19 creatures. On the SAME turn seth swings in and he actually killed 7 out of 9 of the ballista players creatures out of desperation to not die on the spot. Seth also ends that turn 33 to 4 life in his favor.
I don't get it.
In my defense, it was four Cats, not just Servos :)
At 36:54 you keep the Regal Caracal in you deck and end up playing with 61 cards
Coulda triple Huatli -1'd the end of that first game, would have loved to see the numbers
I think the price you've said is a little off from what you had on display there. Last I checked, 96 wasn't equal to 91.
I think it changed. I recorded the intro Friday, but then wrote the article Monday, so the deck must have increased $5 over the weekend.
i never understood why no one ever played cultivator with GPG
Why didn't you play growing rites of itlimoc? It seems like so much missed potential in the deck.
There's no real pay off for all that mana in the deck (or in standard really without completely changing the deck) and it's not even a guaranteed hit off the etb because this deck plays a lot of noncreatures
Lucas Mayberry budget
No anointed procession???
We've already got too many four-drop, so I left it out. It's great with the token producers, and there's probably a way to make it work, but playing Huatli, Sram's Expertise and Anointed Procession (along with stuff like Ixalan's Binding in the sideboard) is challenging.
How to submit deck ideas to seth?
saffronolive@mtggoldfish.com
I'd like to see a token deck with gruesome fate as the kill condition.
yeah I've seen Cultivator do some amazing things. It's just that there are more efficient ways to pump your team. not to the same extent, obviously but still
Opponent Plays Yahenni, undying partisan:
Me: Oh cool--- WAIT NO
Seth: YaHAAAHnnneeeeEEe
Me: God DAMN IT NOT AGAIN
I will miss Seth saying Bonded Courier when Kaladesh rotates.
appeal/authority?
hutli is like aura so under rated but if right built so powerfull
Let's make a worse craterhoof behemoth the deck
Just how bad a mull to 5 on the play is depends on the match up. In a bad match up it can be practically unwinnable but in a good match up you often have a decent chance.
Well.. I'm sorry but imo a good hand at mull 5 has a better chance at winning any (non grindy) matchup, bad or not than a average 7.
Cultivator with God pharaoh's gift or scarab god seems super strong for maybe an against the odds or a much a brew. I hope not!
Seth draws 3 Ixalan's bindings, shits himself when his opponent draws 3 metallic rebukes. :P
Cardkingdom link doesnt work.....
Thanks! I'll let them know.
