CORRECTION: Wolfcl0ck shared the fact that SoB would have been running on Source 1, not Source 2. There's also a .fgd (Game definition file) available that confirms this. Also, that footage at the end is in fact SoB, shared by a ex-Valve employee. Had a hard time deciding what to make. A Doom 3 video or a Black Mesa Source Leak video. Made this instead. Hope you enjoy watching!!
The only time i have on my pc is for development on my new game: gamejolt.com/games/the_golden_files/629545 (Shameless plug) but i can't use twitch on my phone cuz it's to glitchy and i have no extra time on pc cuz i only use my phone when it's night before i sleep so I'm sad u moved to twitch :(
I don't think these humanoids are aliens, rather I think these generically modified humans, as in the influential Dune series of novels. In that universe intelligent aliens are rare, leaving humans to conquer the galaxy, as well as evolve & genetically modify themselves in various forms. The noble, priest & mutant characters, as well as desert concept art definitely remind of Dune
Either genetic modification or just diverging evolution from different populations of humans adapting to the environments of different planets over time, yeah. Definitely some harder sci-fi vibes in that sense.
seems like developing a game world that's dark and depressing would get to you after a while, making it a little more upbeat would help you feel better about your work
Really in depth with this one, well done! I can affirm that it's likely that footage is from Stars of Blood. It comes from an ex-Valve employee's video portfolio. I'm struggling to find the exact video of origin right now, but I have seen it before and can confirm that that's what it's from. It didn't run on Source 2, since Source 2 wasn't even in development by 2009, or, if it was, it would have been in such an infancy that one couldn't even call it its own engine, but moreso a derivative game branch from Source 1. We have a game definition file, which includes all of the entities that existed in the game. They're the following: info_nebula - "input to a nebula arc" func_nebula - "Temp test entity" sob_npc_ship - "NPC Ship" sob_refractfog_controller - "An entity which, when triggered, updates the current 'refract fog' settings." ob_npc_actor - "Generic SoB Actor" sob_prop_attachment - "A way to attach one studio model to another using attachment points to fit instead of bones." The game definition file also begins by including the 2009 Half-Life 3's file as well (@include "ep3.fgd.") We have this file as well, as it was leaked in 2013. It was definitely the 2009 - 2011 rendition of Half-Life 3 and not the 2013-2015 rendition, but I can save that information for another time.
It's rumored that this was going to take place in the Half-Life universe... such a disappointment. It could have shed so much light on the universe. Either the combine being THE bad faction showing that earth is just another one of their occupied planets, or that they are one of many factions in the universe in their own little corner making them feel more defeat-able. On the flip side, if they established there were other Alien-like humans, it could have made it make sense why the combine wanted to destroy humanity - because they could have possibly been their greatest enemy across the galaxy and when they found earth they warned to stomp them out. A whole other train of thought that is so interesting is if this game would have taken place after the combine were defeated on earth, humanity recovered and were out amongst the stars - leaving the combine as a little faction trying to scrape up what they could after being hurt so badly by earth. Absolute tragedy it will never come out IMO
People talk about HL3 but I'm more interested in Valve games like This, Brotherhood of Arms, HLVR, and more the more interesting, Prospero. Just projects like these that never saw much out of Valve or the light of day is so interesting to learn.
this almost feels as if beta hl2 in about a 100 to 1000 years or so if gordon didnt stop the combine at all or took the train directly to nova prospekt. the humans look like they made a peace treaty with the advisors. slowly the humans started evolving to adapt to the environment around them. or it also feels as if humanity won against the combine and did more research in the xen and finally started settling there and adapted to that instead.
really glad you made a video on this. I remember hearing about this game a long time ago and I remember being really interested in it but could never find much solid info. great video!
I wonder if this game was supposed to be in Half-Life/Portal Universe and if Combine Empire was gonna make any appearance there, in a way something like fleet and/or army and e.t.c?
Gives out those kind of vibes tbh. It looks different, but feels very similar. The 3:45 section with the stalker looking dude especially and the fact the characters look like a mix of modified humans and other races.
@@GooberyThinkerme too. Apparently Marc Laidlaw hated the idea of this game being in the HL/Portal Universe, but I’d love to see how the Combine operates on a larger scale.
3:15 if you think about it, such a pilot's outfit makes absolutely no sense in space. The goggles, the scarf and the jacket are all meant as a protection from the strong wind experienced while flying in an open cockpit. Even flying in a closed cockpit gives you none of that, however in case of the windshield being destroyed by enemy fire, these items could still prove useful in a war scenario. In space there is no wind!
I think SoB was going to be like what All Tomorrows is (maybe it is even an inspiration to valve employees?) a world dominated by aliens, but instead of the conventional slavery, we're subjected to different forms of mutation and atrocities, I don't exactly believe the idea was the same though, although I definitely see human mutations in those concept arts.
I only just now figured out about this and god damn I am sad this never got finished. Dude, Valve games have this indescribable quality to them that instantly hooks you before you even get to play it and this game has that quality just from the art alone… the power of Valve games.
Judging by how many games valve stopped developing because Source 2 was not ready for them, I believe this is one of the games the engine could definitely NOT handle
Imma sound like a fanboy who connects everything with everything, no matter how unrelated it is (and Stars Of Blood would have most likely be a original IP), but... imagine having the Combine in this game?
Tbh, Combine is so overpowered, that in every setting they will sorta feel the same- Biggest Baddies Ever, no matter your tech-level, size of your army and et cetera. Even if you put Wh40k Imperium againts them, they be like "Yeah, ok, those gothic bois are strugglin' with one galaxy, while we harvestin' the multiple realities".
Valve have a curse that they don't know number 3 and a lot of cancelled games Edit: and some of the concept arts remind me of half life beta concepts and half life alyx concepts arts
I think Tyler McVicker covered this game in his "30 Cancelled Valve Games Explained" You could cover the "Valve's Team Fortress. It's basically The First version of Team Fortress.
human face with the proportions of a Grey alien, very uncanny valley you ever see those weird commercials for the PS2? There's one with a girl that these remind me of

Valve cut content is what I live for. Cancelled games or cut things from released games will be popular videos for sure!
doom 3.
Doom 3
@Arca Geis no but doom 3 pretty interesting and he has not even done a video on any Doom stuff yet.

Weird how valve tried to go from half-life 2 to a space themed game.
why almost every single game that valve started it had a horor darker fell and when the development continues the game lights up
seems like developing a game world that's dark and depressing would get to you after a while, making it a little more upbeat would help you feel better about your work

18 minute RadHaz video? Hell yeah!
New Rad Haz video that's almost 20 minutes? Is it Christmas today?
For a company that makes videogames they sure don't make alot of videogames.
Only the best, kinda
because they're not really under any pressure to meet deadlines to satisfy shareholders
Valve makes cash
they don’t make games, they make money.
I'm setting all my Valve games to use that Intro because it's funni.
