- How to modify the G10 base station to run on 9 volt pedal power instead of the flimsy micro USB connector.
What you need:
5 volt Regulator - I used an LV805CV but you can use whatever.
Capacitors - 0.33 uF and 0.1 uF

This is the first thing I thought of doing to the G10. Beat me to it! Thanks, now I don't have to think about it quite as hard. :-)
I was on my way to get this made on my 2 G10 receivers, searching for some info on the pcb and found your video. Very nice that you already found the connections on the board to use ;-) Still funny that Line6 made this only with USB connection... Anyway, i like the units and the solution is simple. Take care!
Cool. Let me know if it works for you.
By the way, Line6 did come out with a pedal board version that runs off of 9v but it’s $75 or $100 more I think.
Cool!
Same issue. Only lasted 3 - 4 months; almost a dozen gigs and rehearsals. I should've gotten the coverage, it's a great wireless system.
I am having my guitar tech do this mod right now ! thank you for this I just with you left a link where you got the 9 volt battery conector

@@mikerileyii OK thank you my guitar tech just fixed mine today, we decided not to due the regulator mod , and just keep it simple . we just adde d in the barrel jack
and cut micro usb end off the existing cable.. we found the ground just fine and the positive and negative .. thanks for the help its a brand new STURDY unit now.
he couldn't believe how flimsy and unstable that board was and how line 6 is getting away with this .. I guess they are putting all their quality conrtroll into the Helix, its fixed not but what a huge waste of time .. thanks again
Sixfoursoul you added the like a cable jack in the unit?
Great job. I saw your comment on another video. I've used the G30 for several years and love it. So a couple of questions if you don't mind. The G30 does not effect tone is as good as a cable. How bout the G10? Is the range good? Also will it get through a gig on one charge or do you have to plug it back into the base unit on breaks? Thanks for the video. I subbed👍
Shootin' with Uncle Dan sorry just now seeing this comment. Yeah, the range is excellent and I don’t notice any issues with tone.
Thanks so
Much for your video and info... I just wondered if I could get the negative and positive from the legs of the silver capacitor fastened to the board ? I’m in the middle
Of fitting a new capacitor so would make sense in my case:) thanks :)
Great job on the mod. Looking to do the same for my G10 units. Hope Line 6 is looking at their forum regarding the USB connection issue. The only question, as with any corporate entity, will they respond to customer demands? Unfortunately the answer is usually "no"...
williamthomaspenn thanks!
I think they were trying to hit a certain price point.
I bought a G10S because of the poor USB connector on the G10, but the G10S has horrible reception compared to the G10. I've been using mine for over 5 years and I love it except for the USB. I may attempt this mod.
I wish I had the know-how to do this! That micro-USB connector has given me so many problems. Huge design flaw by Line 6 in my opinion. The connector doesn't even seat fully inside of the receiver. The slightest bump either shuts off the power or makes it start doing the red-blinking light thing which I hate. You should seriously pitch this idea to Line 6!
Hey, have you connected a heatsink to the regulator or are the currents so minimal that the regulator can handle it without further a-do?
No heat sinks. Seems to do fine. Still working over a year later.
@@mikerileyii Late to the party, thank you for your reply. I will instead go with a DC/DC Converter and a angled Micro USB plug - really eager about it!
Hey, my miceousb connector died and I want to use an usb-c connector instead. I found a cable that fits (socket on one side, USB A on the other). Then Cut off the USB A and find the 5V. So in my case I will have 5 V, which I directly can connect to the two pins, am I right? (No capacitors needed?) Thanks in advance. Great video. Best Steve
That's what I will do, just easier and still works
Wouldn't it be easier to cut off the 5 V supply cord and hard wire it to the inside so you wouldn't need the voltage regulator? Curious. Thanks
No, I wanted to power it off my board power supply.
Where are the two points on you line 6 board where you connect your + & - for your 5vdc?
Bump...
Was all this labor and kerfuffule worth more than the $40 difference between this and the G30, which is desinged to go on a pedal board and already has 9V power?
Shaun Mason well sure, that version is available now. They saw the same flaw and fixed it. That version wasn’t available over a year ago when I did this.
@@mikerileyii - don't you just love technology, you buy the latest and greatest, before you have even broken it in they come out with the next model that they should have put out in the first place and you have to buy another unit. These pricks ought to be offering some sort of rebate or discount to compensate for their lack of foresight. That said some of the products are update-able when it comes to the firmware and that is commendable but they really need to address the hardware fixes that happen so fast.
Do you think it might be possible to put a new battery in the transmitter ?
gbtayc not easily. There is a screw under the sticker on the guitar side unit but I bet it’s not easy to take apart.
After three years, this started making a buzzing noise recently. I'm not sure if the regulator is going bad or what. I've not had time to dig into it yet but just a heads up.
did you find out if it was the regulator?
Does anybody have any idea where the positive and the negative get connected to?
I explain it in the video.
How on earth did you manage to get it open in the first place? Really struggling with mine!
Josh Hutchinson I don’t have it in front of me but I’m trying to remember. I think there are screws under the rubber foot pads. And there might be a sticker over the screw in the middle of the bottom of the unit.
@@mikerileyii Yes, you can feel the hole on the bottom, I just pushed my phillips screwdriver thru and unscrewed, then used a guitar pick to go around the edge to pop it open, the bottom just falls out once it's unscrewed, I did try a butter knife and that works also, good luck.
Btw, the reason they use USB is so they can update firmware through it.
Interesting. I guess I'm screwed on firmware updates. :)
mikerileyii 're firmware "if it ain't broke"... ;)
@@mikerileyii You are only screwed, if you unsoldered the connection of the USB Port to get your thing running. A few wires in parallel and the voltage converter is nothing which should interrupt with the USB functionality.
Will definitely do this mod onto my G10 soon!
Could you just get a 5v supply and not need the regulator?
Yes, that would have worked too. But I wanted to be able to power it off of my power brick that only had 9v supplies available.
@@mikerileyii Right on. Stupid USB died on mine recently. Gonna try your mod without the regulator. Great Vid btw. Thank you!
@@typo_Pigman good luck!
Could I send you mine?
I would pay you to mod mine, my USB port is fucked on my G10 Receiver..
Domenick Cuccherini Yeah, I can do it but I can’t make any guarantees.
Email me, mikerileyii at yahoo.
Would my usb port need to be functional for this to work correctly?
Ill send you an email
No, the USB port does not need to be functional. I’ll add a 9v connector just like on a guitar pedal. It will power off of that.
mikerileyii I just emailed you
You lost me at schematic
Justin Ryan lol
Potential GOOD VIDEO, but ruined by poor sound.
