One overlooked tip is that YOU WON'T CATCH AN EDGE ON A FLAT BOX. It's natural to go heelside when turning in the snow, but it'll make you eat it on the box! Just gotta commit to getting that board flat. Hope this helps.
Joseph Messina i think its because with a rail you can just exit off the side and its curved but with a box its wider and flat so you have to ride it all the way

Hmm makes sense. I might buy one of those for my next season. I hurt my knee in the gym a couple days before this season started (and after buying a season pass......), so no messing around at the park for me any time soon (maybe March...)
What's up Kevin?! Your videos are the best and have helped me so much! I was really hoping you could make a video on the halfpipe, I love doing halfpipe and could use some help from you, I hope you read this comment!
To be honest, the actual and main problem I faced when I started sliding on a box (next step is sliding a rail) is that you MUST NOT USE your edge, because as soon as you use the edge, even if you use a little of it, your ass or your face is already beating the box. And there is a big difference preparing to slide on the slope, as shown at the beginning of the video, because on a slope you always use edges, at least a little. SO, for me, the most effective excercise I experienced was trying to slide in the slope, basckside or frontside, but trying to not use the edge, so with EXTREMELY FLAT board ot the ground. So, before to augment the difficulty of the excercise, for example increasing speed, be sure to be on a box WITHOUT USING EDGES.
I tried my first box today in the beginner park at Brighton; just going straight forward. I slipped out heel side and realized two things...1) slower speed and 2) don't lean backwards AT ALL. The second time I tried I nailed it. I really wish I had found this video yesterday! You guys are awesome!
2 weeks ago, I tried a curved box and leaned back and landed on my back, while wearing a backpack. Thought I broke my back. Then I tried a straight box last Saturday and feel the first time, on my back and then tried later on and nailed it. DO NOT LEAN BACKWARDS. lol. God damn my back still hurts.
actually with more speed you get more weight forward than onto the rail when falling, so in a way you won't impact the rail as much as if you would if you have slow speed so higher speed can be good, + it gives momentum and smoother feeling
Do you have to worry about digging your front edge and face planting? I always thought you needed to be on the back edge so you don't catch the front. We did not have any boardparks in the early 90's so we just built jumps but I am taking my kids riding for the first time this year and want to be able to give the best advice I can.
Actually if youre on your heel edge at all you will slip out onto your butt. I'm learning this trick right now. Your base has to be totally flat on the box. No edge! You won't catch your toe edge. Don't lean back at all . Even weight and flat base.
Doug can do it! I saw you on Blackcomb today. I didn't want to be a dbag and call you out though. Thanks, Kevin. These videos have really helped me progress. I ride Cypress and Whistler, would be rad to run into you guys some day. Almost 200k. Woot!

That Swag Shy Guy because it's copyright and that's not a bad thing if you're making money of a video for example and another person uses that video and he is making money of it then that isn't fair is it
100th like! kevin ive really been scared on boxes for boardslides and the information u gave about the hand really boosted my spirit! next time i go for sure using that tip :)
Skateboarded for years and can boardslide stair rails. Recently got into snowboarding and even after watching this video and knowing the technique well from experience, still managed to bail like this on my 1st attempt on a chunky rail!
I feel like everytime i fall im going slow and feel so pathetic because its always something stupid like a little bump in the hill. But when i go fast i shred right through the bumps and curves.
If I get too far forward on my toe edge am I going to catch it on he rail? I am always afraid of this. I appreciate this video says stay off your heals so I don't break my butt on the rail. I just want to know if I should feel comfortable totally flat or if I do need to stay on my heal edge just a little bit?
Kevin, I have been snowboarding since I was like 10 (not super often), but the past two years I was not able to go due to transportation issues and whatnot. This year I really got into it again, but I feel like I'm so much worse than I used to be, I can barely ride switch and am even having trouble with basic things, I'm really disappointed. Any tips to help me get back on my feet? Great vid as always
I 50/50 a rail for my first grunt on my like 3-4 time snowboarding and now I want to try boardslide a rail cause 50/50 was sketchy af I was just going really fast
How do you not catch your forward edge and endo over when you are on a box? Also on rails? Do you have to slightly lean back or slightly put your weight back or not on your front as a general rule when on rails on boxes?
We ride indoors mostly cos we're from the UK. We're trying to ride onto the box slowly to give us time to think but end up losing momentum n eventually balance. If we go faster we're off the end b4 our brains have had time to think. Grrrrrr. I guess we just keep trying! #PATIENCE :D
I basically did this on my first try, but I went in too fast and couldn't straighten myself back out. I got caught on my edge on the landing and somehow got my board uphill. Next time will go real slow. Doesn't help that the box at my resort is barely off the ground.
One thing I don't like is when a box is sticky due to not being taken care of. I went to this resort I normally never ride and found their box and hit it with the normal amount of speed, and I stuck right to it and fell forward. So I thought maybe its just me, hit it again same thing, stuck to it and fell, have you ever come across any boxes that just didn't slide right?
How much of an advantage do u have when youve been skatin for years n years? Goin to the nearest indoor resort for the second time ever today and i feel confident... my elbows look like theyve got hills on them or suttin but fuck that im gonna send it todayy
i have done this, it sucks. in my case i think my edges were too sharp, so i detuned them and it was much better. i know some park riders have almost no edge to avoid this
+SnowboardProCamp Hi Kevin! Just want to thank you for your videos as they've helped me a lot! Just a quick one... have you detuned your edges, and if so, can you show your setup whether its just between the bindings or the whole edge?

Anyone who skateboards knows that leaning forward, putting pressure on your toes, or even putting pressure on the balls of your feet is going to lead to the skateboard instantly sticking in place and you flying forward needing to run it out...you actually need to put just a little weight on your heels and off your toes for a skate boardslide. Combine this with the idea of catching an edge on a snowboard (just riding in the snow) an one of problems in learning snowboard slides is taking the skate idea that "I can't have the front edge of my snowboard touching the box at all or it will stick and I will faceplant (feet locked in) onto the box breaking my face". Why doesn't any How To Boardslide video ever discuss this or talk about where the weight should be on your feet? That's a major thing for many people.
id tell all these beginners that they shouldn't be leaning to far forward either, that way u can catch a toe edge and your fuckedddd, taking the rail straight to your face. You need to be centered both ways. if its a flat rail just be right on top of it, if its a down rail then youre obviously gonna want to lean forwards a bit but not too much, and just stay with the board, dont get spooked and bail cus your gonna end up getting even more broke. Just commit to it, take it from a box to a flat bar to a downrail to kinked and c/s rails and so on and so forth. Have fun!
And then you have me.. who broke my arm trying a 180 on that thing. Too much leaning backwards so i fell Now im scared for life and never going on that box thing ever again
For the board slides dont turn the upper part of your body when you twist your waste and legs, thats why you slide out. Notice the coach only twists his legs, not top half his body. His body stays facing in forwards direction. It's all in the hips lol Legends

Hey is boardsliding with snowboards the pretty much the same as boardsliding while skating? Cause I wanna start snowboarding parks but I already know how to boatd slide whule skating. Will it ve pretty much the dsme or different?
I've never done one on a skateboard, but I think its very similar. There's actually a video on the channel from the summer where we do both!

I have a ride twinpig. Do you think I have to blunt the edges to be able to do boardslides like this? Or will it be just fine the way it comes stock?
Will a 152cm board fit me if I'm 5, 10 and 65kg? I like riding the trees and park but mostly just hit hip jumps
