      You'll need a relatively stiff and similar gear to maintain the same level of edge control. It starts with board, bindings, etc...

      That's a good way to get around. *REALLY good carved turns look much more athletic though.* Not hard per se, but your body should often be 30degrees off the snow on a directional board. 45degrees for say a pipe rider. Watch the olympians & think of a really good motorcycle rider making a turn. You gotta get DEEP into it. Still easy, but definitely takes more skill. Good carving looks like downhill ballet.

    This UA-cam instructor is hands down the best for snowboarding. When I discovered his channel, I was an intermediate snowboarder struggling with my technique and occasional counter-rotation. Now, thanks to his guidance, I've progressed to an intermediate-advanced level. @@FurryNightmare666 I started snowboarding last December 2023 at 58 (at my daughters request) so I could be with both my kids (her and her brother) who are passionate snowboarders. Since I started late, I did a crash course by buying great gear in January - all Burton, step-ons, AK clothing etc. (I have not time to experiment and now a platinum member :). Took a membership at a local snowboarding hill and lessons every Saturday with practice on Sundays since then (16 times so far and going). And most importantly watched all of Malcolm's videos with each step of progress every chance I get. Now I can turn properly and comfortable with difficult blues in two months. I should be decent when I go with the kids on a 3 day snowboarding trip in the mountains in April! I will also continuously try to improve with the same method as my body keeps getting stronger, lost a lot of weight(fat) and I have so much energy at work. So at 40, you have all the time in the world!

    Bonjour Malcolm - I was wondering, if possible, if you'd be able to post more videos of live coaching with intermediate riders? Of course, not sure if possible because of permission issues or if you don't record your coaching sessions, but would definitely help to see you coaching live.
    As everyone else, i've been watching your channel over the years and your videos have single-handedly saved me thousands of dollars on lessons and taken my riding to many new levels that wouldn't be possible with spending money. Appreciate the free content you put out and you are in the top 5 best instructors out there, if not the best. Merci beaucoup!

    Today was my first day of the season and I tried to work on the centre of mass over the board concept from your first video of the season but was having some issues on choppy snow. I intuitively tried learning the hip and knees forward a bit to get more control over each turn, which I think ties in with what you mention here, and it helped.

    • @thirtykey
      @thirtykey Місяць тому +16

      Has everything to do with how long your board points down the fall line on each turn. He has a ton of lateral movement with “closed turns” which allow him to shed speed. He explains it well in several of his videos. Try to fully face uphill on your toeside turns. That’s usually where riders don’t fully commit.

    • @jdenbrok
      @jdenbrok Місяць тому +7

      It doesn't show on video, but likely he is just accepting a lot higher speed than you are ok with. If you are ok with going a bit faster, you don't accelerate as much as there is much more drag

    Thank you Malcolm! Your content is, without hesitation, the best snowboard content on the web. The way you simplify and logically step through each technique makes it very easy to translate my own riding and take it to the mountain. I don’t see any discussion in your videos about shoulder movement. When carving, should I be opening my leading shoulder on my heel edge and sightly closing of my leading shoulder on my toe edge to help pull the board around?

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Рік тому

      I can't remember exactly what I say I this video but I should cover shoulders a bit more:
      ua-cam.com/video/eKmHng_lh74/v-deo.htmlsi=iTmXjROlXQTyfktj
      I am currently editing a video for more advanced carving that covers this a bit more. The problem with talking about using the upper body is that it's not a 100% all the time rule, you can use them to anticipate and pull you into a turn, and open them up to better angulate your body for hard carving, but it's only when the conditions allow and you're making the right kind of turns for that. I'm always a little hesitant to talk about some of that stuff as people who aren't ready for it start trying to do things that won't help them!

    • @gregghorwitz3213
      @gregghorwitz3213 Рік тому

      Understand and agree. It’s a very subtle movement but I find it helps engage my carve and when the board comes around, everything comes back into alignment and I’m stacked. Keep the great content coming!

One the things I find that works for me is the sensation of being up on my toes when I'm on my toe edge. I tried your lever strategy but found I just couldn't get myself to focus on it. For beginners such as myself who falls quite often from catching an edge, should I prioritize learning and improving my center of mass changes as discussed in this video or knee steering & remembering exactly when to turn using the direction line & standing up in between that you mentioned in earlier videos?
    I just wanna make sure I'm prioritizing the most important concept. if you believe they're all equally important then I'll do that!

I cannot imagine going there with short turns but rather only skidding and the worst thing ever counter rotation to control the speed or slow down when needed and not skid on one side of a board only. Could you please make a video about this? I cannot find a solution for this and feel very stressful going down on the narrow steep slopes. I believe a lot of people have this issue.

    • @malcolmmoore

    Letting gravity pulling your body over the board is the opposite of what I’ve been doing because I’m afraid of falling so I always move my body away from gravity and let my board go towards gravity. So what you said makes sense. I’m going to try to change my mind set. Thank you so much.

    small advice. you can explain to your viewers that if they notice the track you leave behind is as wide as the edge of the board showing that your remaining on the edge and not on the bottom flat side of the board. just a small pointer.

    great video as always - i had a question regarding knee steering. i’m trying to progress from up unweighted turns to knee steering and wanted to know - do you still need to stand up with the knee steering movement or do you stay in a position with knees slightly bent and use gravity to pull your knees/hips across the board like mentioned in this video? thanks!

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Рік тому +1

      You don't have to use knee steering with an up unweighted movement, but you can, quite effectively as you sink back down, think about sinking into front leg then back leg after to ease the board into and then through the turn. Honestly though, I'm kind of going off talking about all these up and down movements, it's not something I really think about when I'm riding, and apart from telling it to beginners to help them pass their centre of mass over the board, it can sometimes become a bit confusing. Because crossing your centre of mass over the board is the main thing you need to do, and if you can use your legs independently as you do this (as I explain at the end of this video just in case you didn't catch the end!) then that movement can be even more effective. Once you're pretty comfortable making smooth s shaped turns of various sizes on various terrain then I would revisit up or down unweighted movements in order to derive more performance from the board. Sorry, long answer and I can't now remember your question!

    20 year newbie here...meaning, got my first board decades ago, even progressed to more expensive kit...to this day, I don't go beyond green circles or bunny slops or blue square run when I'm feeling ok about being concussed. How much are we supposed to rely on ankles? I barrel down the mountain and when I toe edge or whatever I honestly feel extreme tension in my ankles...almost to the point I feel like bones and tendons are on the verge of injury. My mates have never taught me, and I have never enjoyed the sport, I'm just anh old skate boarder who considered snowboarding to be the natural progresssion....I can make it down a mountain but honestly don;'t know what I am doing

      I gave my dancehaul to an electrician for doing a job 😂 nothing wrong with that board, it's probably more user friendly than the current board I'm on, the Stranda Biru, which is a bit more aggressive. Dada is great fun board, softer and more flexy, but I rode that to death and the base is destroyed.

I feel like whenever I'm snowboarding I'm at a crowded resort on a weekend in the middle of the day and I can't effortlessly carve because not only am I dodging people left and right, but the run is bumpy and ungroomed from just being pounded by people.

    I am trying to combine an effortless riding with the carving rule for a "pencil line" behind you and this does not happen often. The carving turns you were doing in the video were also not thin pencil lines in their middle section. So, does that mean when we are riding effortlessly we shall not be so demanding about the strict carving?

    hi malcolm. love your videos.
    do you have any specific advice for a rocker-dominant board? my GNU GWO uses mild camber underfoot but rocker shape between the feet. i have a hard time locking into carves and find my back foot slipping out. are there any techniques that help with my kind of setup?

      @gc7070 Рік тому

      Hi mate, I had a Riders Choice last season and one thing that someone advised me and helped me was pivoting my leading foot knee when doing the turns. So in a sense slightly opening the knee on my toe to heel edge turn and closing it a bit when going heel to toe edge turn. Hope that helps!
      Btw tried the GNU GWO a couple of times and oh boy was it a fun board!

      I have a GNU and a Burton Custom camber, on the GNU is very hard to do some carves because it always wants to skid, it`s more easyer on a camber but i love the magnatraction on the GNU, it`s a lot of grip on ice compared to my Burton :)

    in very very simple wards I will explain it 2. lets imagine a simple s-turn, in each turn we lean in the same direction as our turn. if the turn is sharp move your mass quick in the front foot (start the turn)while lean afterwards(as your momentum goes forward) a little back and simultaneously lean in the same direction as our turn. If it is sharp and steep do all the previous with your mass close to the board

    I should do my own video. I started to snowboard in my mid 40’s because I wanted my kids to do it. After 3 years, 5-8 times a season, I am better than all my kids which usually doesn’t happened to older people. Anyway, I am not the best but I can go down black and stuff. I know how hard it is for older people to learn. Most of these video training videos are good for younger people. They don’t know the age factor. There is a different way to teach older people. I saw so many trainers in the mountain tell people just do this and that. It doesn’t work for older people. We get hurt and do recover. We have to be cautious. I went up a ram and it came with 6 weeks of pain. Two years ago, I went hard on black and my shoulder took 6 month to recover. My daughter flipped, she recover less that 10 days.

    I'm working my way through your vids after discovering you on my return from a boarding trip to Andorra just over a week ago and struggling with a few things. Although I won't be going anywhere for another year, I may go to our local indoor slope to practice. Are you able to help with something. When I did my lessons indoor a few years ago, I was taught to lift my toes to turn onto the heal edge and then lift my heels to get onto the toe edge. I use this pedal style motion for controlling most of my turns and it's clearly bad practice as my calves were burning after day 1 and as I got through each day on the slope things just got more painful. How can I get out of this habit of using my toes so much? I just couldn't switch it off for the 6 days I was on the slopes. I've watched your posture and turning vids and all makes complete sense, I just need to replace these bad habits with the correct ones, it's just never that easy. Thanks
