Unlike the offroad models of other manufacturers, the Raptor actually has a reasonable payload. So aside from goofing around on offroad trails, this can actually be used as truck is supposed to be used: 4 adults can actually go to work with some 500 lbs of cargo in the bed. Clear winner in the segment.
If you are going to carry 500 lbs in the truck bed, you probably should get the (Ford Ranger Load Box Reinforcement Kit) installed on the truck. Two strong metal "L" Brackets that mount on the lower front part of the truck bed frame to give the truck bed more support.
Yup. The payload of the taco is a joke!
I was determined to buy a 2024 Tacoma TRD Pro when they were initially teasing the 4th gens but after seeing the pricing I’ve decided to go the Ranger Raptor route. I get so much more truck with the Raptor and for $10k less.
I test drove one last week and it made my Ranger Tremor feel ancient 😂

Agree with you 100%. Only thing that sucks is dealer markups are pushing this closer to 70K and at that point, a TRX with 20-30K miles becomes pretty tempting.
Give it time.
Unfortunately trx is a full sized truck so offroading become difficult on the trails.
@@marklihsuyeah I have a Raptor 37 and I live in the PNW. The width of these trucks does limit the number of trails I can go to vs. my 4Runner. But the ones that I can actually fit, I fly through those trails at 40 mph vs other vehicles slowly crawling through at 5-10 mph lol. Small compromise, but the gen 3 Raptor is the best vehicle I’ve owned.
I'm not a big fan of Ford, but I have to admit that the Ranger Raptor stands out as the best mid-size truck when it comes to coolness, features, capabilities, speed, and comfort. I do wish it had rear A/C vents and I hope it proves to be reliable. While the pricing is a bit high, it is still more reasonable than Toyota's TRD Pro and the ZR2 Bison.
It's reliability has already been proven across the world. 100% agree with the A/C vents, bad decision.
Toyota better get their💩 together fast or they’re going to lose a lot of market share.
The new 4runner better be dialed in 200% before they start shipping them out.

Nothing wrong with declaring a favorite. All these midsize truck reviews are making me want to get one. I had so much fun playing with my ZR2 back in the day. If these weren't so bloody expensive, I probably would get one.
When I was a Ford tech 100% of turbo failures were from lack of maintenance. I never had a turbo just fail.
I also have a 2015 2.7l ecobeast f150, has 156,000 miles on it. Turbos are still just fine.
I blame Ford for almost all the issues with the newer engines. The dealers here tell customers that Ford recommendations are their blend oil and 7,500 mile oil change. The new Transit 3.5 none turbo is a 20,000 oil change. They do run a 12 quart oil pan, however the same FL500 filter. Recipe for trouble. The fleets that we service run the Transit T350 with the 3.5 twin turbo. Some are from 2016 and have over 300,000 miles. None have ever needed a turbo, camshaft phasers, timing chains or engine service. They do like fresh spark plugs around 35,000 miles.
I have a 2011 F150 FX4 with the 3.5L ecoboost -- first generation turbo engine I do maintain the engine as best as I know how (oil changes, comply with the service schedule) and have never had a turbo issue. I have had hoses deteriorate, but with a 13 year old vehicle, I suppose that's always a weak point.
Tell more people!! I have had three EB F150s ... always change the oil at 5K, always with full synthetic and always w/ Motorcraft filters ... never had any engine problems - mileage at trade 140K, 85K and current with 55K. Traded to get into a newer model, different color and because I can. I hear stories of older F150s with over 300K and no turbo problems.

Good vid Tim. I think Ford really nailed the Ranger Raptor. For context, I am a Toyota guy with a 2018 TRD off-road Tacoma I am still really happy with. I like the new Tacoma too, but I would be hard pressed to pass up on the Raptor if spending over $50k. It’s not perfect, the fuel economy is the biggest issue for me, but all of these trucks have flaws.
It was designed and engineered in Australia, hence the relatively high payload and the location of the plugs at the rear end.
It was tested for a long time driving on corrugated roads ( what you guys call washboard).
Unlike the taco 😂

Man im so excited, I secured this exact spec truck minus graphics package to be built this month. It's the color I wanted and I was lucky to grab the allocation. Can't wait to get in the driver seat!

Code orange accents on the interior are spot on..Ford needs to do this updated interior on the GEN 4 Raptor...Lets go FORD!

Not sure about this one. Every dealer I talked to wants an additional markup. The overall looks are not that special. There are a lot of sensors to maintain over time. I do like the horsepower but think the ZR2 without the Bison package might be a better truck to own.
Great video on the Raptor! When will we be getting a review on the Ranger with the 2.7 EcoBoost? If they'd just offer ventilated seats and heads up display like the other midsize trucks they''d be heads and shoulders above the other mid size trucks.
Not sure on timing. I’ve yet to see a Ranger with the 2.7.
Tim you might want to look over the RHO options, No ventilated seats from what I see.
IDK about resale because anything raptor has always had a incredible resale value
I just love the duality of it all. Great performance, on road and off. Not overly jacked up but enough to tackle what most people would want. Inspiring engine (at least from a modern turbocharged perspective) and moderate size. I still like the idea of the Tacoma hybrid with it's 2.4kw onboard power and multilink rear suspension but I also like to hoon my daily driver so this may edge it out depending on how spritely it drives.
It’s amazing that this truck’s MSRP is about $56K and comes almost fully loaded. It makes the new Taco TRD Pro look VERY overpriced. My only concern is the reliability of Fords ecoboost V6’s. I had a Gen 2 F150 Raptor and loved it but I had to deal with the dreaded Cam Phasor issue. All of the Ford recalls haven’t exactly helped their reputation lately.
Lately, all of the recalls for my Ecoboosts have been things like replacing wiper motors, even if there's no problem, inspecting the insulation wrap on the wire loom that supplies power to the e- brake, replacing a module for the parking lamp flicker. All nothing burgers that did not require me to rush in to have the work done....... it was completed during routine maintenance. The 3.5 litre Ecoboost and the 2.7 litre Ecoboost are great engines and they have proven to be super reliable and powerful for me in personal and business use.
It makes the trd off road look overpriced 😂 Toyota just launched a bunch of recalls. At this point none of the mfg are better than the other.
Yes it should have ventilated seats. This is what happens when northerners build vehicles. Heated seats heated steering wheel but who needs ventilated seat? Um all southern state. Florida, Georgia, Texas, and so on don't appreciate Leather seats sitting in a 100+ degree sun.
Tim just a heads up. I went to build a RHO and it doesn't offer ventilated seats either

I think most people concur with you on this being the best midsize and a good value. I think many folks overlook the Canyon AT4X or Chevy ZR2. If you don't get the AEV versions they are also a pretty good value.
I recently placed an order for Ranger Raptor at my favorite local dealership. No obligation, no deposit, no dealer fees, NO MARKUP! If it comes in and i don't like it enough to purchase then they will just sell it to the next person. The one caveat is that i would potentially be trading in my 2023 F150 Raptor...so yeah there is that. I think the Ranger Raptor will just fit my lifestyle a bit better. It would be nice to be able to go to a touchless automated car wash from time to time. I also live in a relatively urban/suburban area of New England so the size would be refreshing. I was also a bit confused by the lack of ventilated seats. I looked and you can't get that as an option in the Bronco Raptor either. My F150 Raptor has it though. I would be curious if there is some sort of engineering reason for that omission. I am also thinking about comfort. I am 6'3" normal build and most reviews out there are done by folks that are "exactly" 6' or less...I guess i will wait and see on that. Thanks!
I picked the Ridgeline Black Edition for price, smooth ride, quiet, roomy interior. The new Ranger Raptor might be my next truck. I like that the Raptor has a V6, 4WD-Auto, independent suspension, and adjustable ride. Will it ride as smooth as my Ridgeline. I don't care about payload and 5k towing is plenty for me.
Well done Ford. Now get your dealers to stop add-on to MSRP.
I think for most on road trips the Ridgeline would still be more composed, but certainly if you ever needed that capability it might prove to be smoother once the going gets even a little rough.
The Ridgeline is a unibody “truck”. In that sense, it’s more of a car than a true truck. When you drive a proper body on frame truck, you’ll feel the difference. Now, I have not driven the Ranger Raptor so idk how it compares, but I have the bigger F150 Raptor 37 and that thing is nothing short of a luxury car on road. Quiet, smooth, and absorbs everything on the road. Ford does a really good job with tuning those Fox shocks.
Edit: only the front suspension is independent on the Ranger. The rear is still solid axle.

The hidden secret is the engine with the torque and the horsepower and the tune that they put on it and how light and aerodynamic this truck is. The engine is the best engine I have used-it’s so fast and so smooth and it’s one of a kind I’ve been running 93 octane in it. The engine finally broke and I’ve been getting 0 to 60 and 4.7 seconds which is better than the full size 6 rafter it’s too heavy to have that week V6 and I would never get a full size rafter with a V6 that to me just was absurd when they came up with that idea, and the Ranger faster and the dynamics down and the ratio of the full size rafter
Nice! Looks like an awesome ride. Can't argue with the win, just not for me. I just don't need all the extras but definitely a good buy for those that do.
XLT with V6 upgrade and FX4 would be a sweet spot when it launches.
I wish ford would copy the colorado with the ability to put android auto maps on the main cluster. I really like the idea of glancing down instead of the typical center console. For me the raptor is out. I prefer towing capability which means I'll wait for the 2.7 if I decide on the ranger. I am also holding off until I see if the rumor about the frontier getting a electronics update is true.
Just bought a new Ranger Raptor one week ago awesome truck love it, and it is (Scary Fast) compared to my last 3 trucks - 2000 Tundra V8, 2008 Tacoma Prerunner V6, and 2019 Colorado ZR2 V6. I'm taking my RR into the dealership tomorrow to have them install the (Ford Ranger Load Box Reinforcement Kit) on it, strong metal "L" brackets that mount under the lower front part of the truck bed frame for extra support. Not sure why Ford doesn't do that at the factory when the truck is being built, kind of strange.
Is the " Load Box Reinforcement Kit" just for the Raptor version, or it for the other trims? What do they accomplish?
@@kdcarver I'm pretty sure they are for all 2024 Ford Rangers, and Ford Ranger Raptors. Official Ford document says they are needed if there is over 88 pounds in the back bed of the truck bed that is above the truck bed rails. If the L brackets are not installed it can cause serious damage to the truck. Someone on Ranger6g forum said there is a video of a new Ranger Raptor I believe it was in Australia floating around where a guy put a camper shell on the truck and truck bed frame failed causing the front part of the truck bed to crush the back of the truck cab partially.
As a Toyota fan and the owner of a 2017 Tacoma, I have no problems saying I think Ford has the best midsized truck money can buy in this new generation. Paying 10k more for the Tacoma for reliability to me just seems like you'd have to spend 10k on maintenance on the Ranger to break even on price, and how likely is that to happen over the ownership of the truck? Only thing I wish Ford did was offer a 6ft bed option, I like having a 6ft bed when I need to carry bigger things, but I don't need a full size.

9:13 what was the concern for the tires? As far as I know they are standard BF Goodrich KO3's the same as you'd be able to find from TireRack or other distributor.
I've heard from many people the stock OEM tires don't last as long as off the rack tires. That was my point.
@@Pickuptrucktalk I know some OEMs have put bespoke (inferior) tires on their vehicles but I dont know if it's necessarily always the rule or even something common. Curious if you have heard anything specific to the tires on this particular Raptor.

Nice truck, but for me it's the Colorado ZR2 hands down.
I have a friend who's toward the end of his career building trucks for Ford...says quality has become a lower priority more than ever. Emphasis now on DEI at the expense of the RIGHT person making decisions.

Amazing powertrain! Love that 3.0 v6 and it's amazing Ford managed to fit it in a midsize truck. Nice to see somebody pushing the midsize truck market forward. Crazy to think that most half-tons didn't have that kind of power 10-15 years ago. The one area that the Ranger falls short in is the bed design. I use the bed for hauling building materials all the time so bed design and tie-down points is always a big factor for me. The trailer connections just plain sucks and to see it from Ford is quite bizarre because if anyone should get that right, it's Ford. Sweet suspension. What kind of 4WD hub design does this truck use? Is it using the vacuum actuated IWE design or something different?
This truck really highlights the problem with the 4th gen TRD Pro's pricing. It's a glaring issue that Toyota can't ignore and the shock seats is not a valid justification for that huge price gap.
I don't have a problem with turbocharged engines that are built from the ground up to be turbocharged. Most manufacturers these days know how to do that right (Ford, Toyota, GM, etc). Nobody will ever convince me that an engine like the 2.7 Ecoboost or 2.7 Turbomax are going to live a short life because they're turbocharges. They are basically diesel engines with spark plugs lol.
Now that I finally dumped my horrible 2019 Tacoma, it’s nice to have options that aren’t all compromises.
With regards to cooled seats, the Ranger also does not have rear a/c vents. The ducting probably can't fit for either application, though it would be nice to have them.
I think the rear AC vents missing is a cost cutting thing for the US, as some ROW Raptors or other trim levels do have them where the cut out is on the back of US truck consoles.
Aussies and other countries got rear vents in their Ranger Raptors. It's the US/Canadian version that is lacking the vents. It was simply a cost cutting move by Ford.
Taco don't have rear vents so they were probably benchmarking that

Every damned mid-size seems to have some deal breaker for me. They are charging such insane prices for these things I didn't see how they can't put the nice features on at least the top trim. I didn't want a full size, but I might end up having to get one just to get the features and quality I want.

Does the U.S. model have J braces from the factory? If not these are going to see cracked beds with toppers or anything with weight on the bed sides without them.
I dont think so. Looks like Ford sells them as an accessory for people who will use a shell or rack though.

You might not be an engineer but maybe you should be a product designer. Fantastic point about the trailer hookups!
Everything is a compromise. I believe the regular Ranger models have the plug receptacles in the bumper next to the license plate, but for the Raptor they moved it due to the size of the spare tire underneath which they said interfered with where the standard harness and such were routed.
No cooled seats and no rear seat HVAC. Total fail at the price point and I know a few guys at work who have overlooked this truck for these exact reasons
Wait till you see the taco pros at much higher prices without those features

Comparable with my hybrid maverick. Which means Ford knows how to build trucks unlike the tacos with 1250 payload 😂
@@marklihsu put 1500lbs in both a Taco your Maverick. I think you'll find that payload ratings are just ratings and have little to do with real world performance ability.
The hood and front grill look soft, not aggressive enough for a Raptor in my opinion, or as nice as the front of the Chevy Bison looks. It should also fit 35” tires and have a front winch option that looks integrated. Also, a real hybrid with all the same horsepower and torque? Just my wish list.

The ZR2 nit is somewhat of a dead-end complaint IMO. Why do we need a headlight on/off switch at all? That there is a way to turn off something that should otherwise be always-on is just a nice touch regardless of it being in a menu.
It’s just something to complain about. I think the Raptor’s lockers being in the screen is worse
I just had an annoying issue with the headlights when I drove a GMC Canyon the week after. I was out filming, turned on the lights and got home. The truck was chiming about something and showed the check the rear seat area. Took me a good few minutes to realize it was the lights. I then had to turn the truck back on to turn off the lights. Explain to me how that's an improvement over a dial??

Have fun with the design flaw in that engine. Why would anyone want to go into a tundra especially right now with the recalls is a head scratcher
The two I test drove shook at all speeds and the driver door wouldn’t shut without slamming it on one of them. I thought all the talk about Ford slipping on quality was bs but it’s for real. I couldn’t pull the trigger.
Brother actually has one. No such issues and is very impressed as he says it is almost like his Porsche except in a truck format. Paddle shifters aren't as fast as his Porsche but it's also a third or the price 😂

Man, I just don’t know. I’m still torn between the ZR2 and Ranger Raptor. Both are really good in their own way. Both make me want to go back to a mid-size but as a family hauler I’m not sure I can do it, space wise. 🤷♂️
ZR2 is a nice truck but raptor is superior between the V6 turbo and the tuned suspension

I will say! Yes this is a great midsize truck! Here is the problem with it! The stealerships are crazy! And I’m being nice on saying it that way!!! I test drove one ! Loveeee it! But sticker at 60,000 and then the say price adjustment!! Anywhere from 10,000 to almost 15,000 over that sticker, you are either stupid or just have what we call Monopoly money! What a joke! But! It’s nice! But I went with the ZR2 Colorado for at least 12-13000 less in price. Great video

The ZR2 Bison is superior. It will go places the raptor simply can’t. More off road equipment and tech, same torque and payload. Its the better midsize off roader
Slightly different use scenarios, rock crawler vs desert runner. Both super nice, gmcs and chevy can run almost 70k with add-ons.
@@rjejames28 I agree that the visions are different, but the Bison is $60K. And both can desert run. But if you can’t clear rocks and obstacles, you’re getting left behind. 95 extra HP is not going to make that much of a difference off road.

@RCian2000 I like them both but I just configured a bison with similar options it's 63k and change. I really wanted the extra power, the extra rear sit legroom and the 6k savings. Thats why i ordered the raptor. Like I said, there both sweet vehicles I don't think you can go wrong.
@@rjejames28 yes but the Bison has an equally long if not longer list of things the raptor doesn’t have, most of which make it the better off roader. Like the lift, bigger tires, clearanced wells for those tires, hydraulic bump stops, full metal front and rear bumpers, full underbody skid plates, a full size spare that isn’t a steely, not to mention the regular ZR2 stuff the raptor doesn’t have like the air conditioned seats, rear climate vents, a better infotainment system, 10 camera front/rear/side/underbody system, buttons for HVAC, buttons for lockers.. etc
Turn off the RCTA on a Toyota while towing …. whatever that equal is on a Ford might work?

Would love a phev ranger. Loving my hybrid maverick. Just hauled a pallet of mulch uphill from home Depot for a few miles and still got 35mpg .

A sunroof in a vehicle is an immediate no from me.
May not be able to have one in this vehicle due to smaller roof than the F150R and the needed roll cage
Regarding the placement of the trailer connections.... you said they would get knocked off while off-roading.... I personally would be off-roading with a trailer hooked up to the truck.... lol.

Ford does some dumb stuff i have a regular 24 xlt fx4 it comes with power folding mirrors but not heated

Looks like a full size truck?, ford doesn't know the difference between ford ranger compact to a midsize like a maverick truck!!?? Which nameplate off 70's car??? Ford not know!!!. They must have went to public school???
2024 Ford Ranger Raptor is a half ton. Not a midsized
"half ton" has referred to size category for the past 30+ years, and not payload like it have have been for the boomer generation or prior.

Vehicle classes are based off GVWR and that puts this truck in the same category as and f150
@@notme3184 legal vehicle classes for regulatory purposes sure, but half ton is just a marketing term for the general population not dissimilar to compact, subcompact, midsize or full size sedan/cuv terms.

Body has nothing to do with it. Classes are based off GVWR.
If, it’s turbo high maintenances are required. Also, less reliable.
Not really high maintenance is it........ just have to be diligent with your oil changes and use synthetic oil.
Ford is making the best trucks right now. Super Duty gas or diesel is best in class. Ranger is best in class, F150 is best or possibly tied with GM.
I can't believe the US market keeps complaining about no cooled seats..😂..I live in central Australia and it gets really hot here and have never wanted cooled seats.. not a thing here people want... love my Raptor... ohh and Toyota aren't reliable any more, I work on the mining industry and see Toyota's fail all the time.
We are admittedly softer here.
