Good video. One important point not mentioned.....the advantage of the heliocoil is you are adding steel threads, superior to the original aluminum threads. So even if you think you could just tap a larger hole in the aluminum, you might end up stripping the aluminum again. But steel is less likely to strip.
Thanks, Jason. When I was in the army, my section chief would NEVER let us install helacoils and it always seemed a mystery to me. Your video makes it seem simple!
Update - in the past twp hours, I drove to Autozone and picked up an insert kit, took the Trooper through the carwash , came home and installed two helicoils! They look great, too. Going to let them cure before I re-assemble muffler to mower. Thanks, Jason. That was actually fun.
I saw someone else re-drill and tap the hole and got scared, but then I saw you just run a tap down and clean up the threads for the insertion of the heli coil and wasn't scared anymore. Amazing!!
So glad the video was useful for you. Helicoils are not hard to install but most people think they are and end up paying big money to have it done. Best of luck with your project.
I have to do one of these repair on my sis car tomorrow I really I didn't have to but I gotta do it :( nervous never did this but thanks for the video couldn't do it without you guys thanks
Thanks gently noticed transmission leak and I noticed two bolts we're loose when I try tighten them up and let some aluminum threading come off on them looks like I might do what you did thank you
Can anyone explain how to know what size bolt you have so you will get the correct heli-coil? This was a super video but it seems all the ones I've seen tell what it is and how to install it but no information on getting the right size. Probably to most people that is a no brainer....lol....but my brain doesn't get it. Thanks again for a great video. Simple and good camera work. Jesus bless.
+Jason “Beeman” Chrisman well unfortunately that's why I was looking at this video, 3 bolts need doing on my exhaust side of my block ! in Ireland a garage would won't at least 150euro for the fix ?!
Wow being a tradesman I see a couple of issues. You do not use loctite on the helicoil as it will leak into the inside of the thread and second you do not bang down to remove the tang you reverse the tool and turn backwards breaking of the tang. Don't worry the helicoil will not come out.
Greetings, So what size helicoil did you use? What is the exact size of the tap in relation to the helicoil....(assuming hole already drilled to proper size) basically if a 1/2 inch diameter helicoil is bought separate from the tap and a tap kit with various taps are used, how would a person know what size tap to use??....or simply, is a tap that comes in a kit with a 1/2 inch helicoil going to be a little bigger than 1/2 inch but state the measurement 1/2 on tap or is it going to be like 3/8 to fit the outer diameter if the helicoil?? I can’t find this simple answer to my question anywhere....geez!!
Thanks for the reply about fishing out the tang. Next question: If you are already tapping hole to install the helicoil, why not just install a larger bolt and skip helicoil altogether?
I had to take my car seat out to fix it. The bolt that attsch to to the car and car seat wont tighten. It tightens a little but then it keeps spinning. Is it because the treads are striped.
So you mean you hand tapped a bigger hole to fit a helicoil that would fit the same bolt? So my question is, is this "helicoil" what you demonstrated is also effective when new threads are created whenever you insert a bolt incorrectly inside a threaded hole forming a different thread?
Usually when someone discovers this video something has stripped out and they are aiming to fix it themselves. So is this the case for you? Thanks for watching!! :)
thank for the great video. I need to helicoi my busted drain pan. any recommendation in keeping the shaving (as you tap) from getting into the pan which may later damage the engine.
nice video. I'm going to try to use a heli-coil to reduce the existing tread size of the female side of my fitting and make it match up with a smaller thread size for the bolt that will go into it. Does that make sense? Your video really helped as a refresher for using a heli-coil insert. It's not very often that I need one, but when I do, it's important.
I have a Honda mower model HRR216K4VXA that has a broken Flange bolt that holds the carb with accompanying gaskets and air cleaner housing to the intake port., According to the parts description, the bolt is 6x86. About 3/4 inch has broken off. I've tried using a reverse drill bit but it didn't work. I'm thinking that my only recourse is to drill it out and use a coil. My question is, how do you determine which kit to buy with a flange bolt that measures 6x86? Thanks. I've subscribed to your channel.
Sorry for the delay, I would suggest you go to the auto parts store (Advanced Auto or Autozone) and ask them. They will be able to get you head in the right direction. Good luck!
Joseph Buck Does the bolt have room to go all the way in with the tang in hole? If so I would not worry about it. But if it's doesn't them try putting a little grease on the end of a screwdriver that fits in the hole. See if the grease will stick to the tang enough to lift it out. If not experiment! Try a pair of tweasers. Good luck man!
To make sure you get there right helicoil kit you should take the bolt with you to the auto parts store. They will take care of it from there. As you seen these are a great fix for threads. I believe the threads are even better now than from factory. Good luck!
While removing my transmission bolts at the back top section of the engine block one got round up due to lack of space.whats is the easiest way to get that rounded head bold off.thank you.
Franklyn Felix I understand the lack of space I have done my share of tranny work. Have you tried a good pair of vise grips, small pipe wrench, or maybe cut the head off then remove the stud after the transmission is dropped. I feel for you this little things make the job a pain in the butt. Good Luck!
how small of a bolt do they make these for . I have a gun that has a very small screw hole that needs new threads ? 6/32 would be the machine screw that mounts the hood into the striped region so .
Just doing a Google search for small Helicoils, I get this www.google.com/search?q=small+helicoils&oq=small+helicoils&aqs=chrome..69i57.7231j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 Best of luck!
time sert goes down that small (hell they go down to 4-40 ) but they want 80 bucks for a kit like that and it seems crazy for a simple stripped threads . Who know might have to do it though if I cannot make one out of something myself . Thanks for help
helicoil is NOT the same as a key insert. a key insert is a solid piece of tube with a thread cut inside to fit the oniginal fastener . and a thread cut on the outside to fit the larger new drilled and tapped hole. it is then permanantly retained by driving in the four pin keys into the oversizeed new hole threads ,locking the insert in place. they need a little more room than a coil o/d , but are a better choice,as they can be cleaned out with a tap , in future if the application needs dissassembly and reassembly a number of times
is this the same proses with the holes striped out for the chain saw blade being striped out? my chain keeps coming lose because of bolt holes striped.
Helicoil are perfect for fixing stripped threads. They are available in all thread sizes. If you've got a stripped "bolt hole" then use a helicoil to fix it.
+KeepRolling1000 They do make them in several sizes. Have you Google Helicoils sizes? Maybe check Amazon. Don't rely on your local hardware to carry all of the sizes made. Good luck!
+Jason “Beeman” Chrisman Me too. It's been holding me up for awhile getting my car on the road. I should just drop the transmission but no clue how and haven't come across a good how to video yet.
i got a motorized bicycle engine from china and it's made of aluminium i'm pretty sure. long story short, the mount bolts, header bolts and exhaust port bolts are all stripped. this happened on every single (5 so far) engine i've had. so far, i've been just tossing the engines or keeping them around for spare parts. this might just allow me to rebuild the engines i have and possibly resell them with confidence. seriously, it's like the block is made of butter :/
thus why i looked up your video in the first place. i wanted to make sure what kit and tools to buy and the exact procedure to do it. i'm legally blind but can see well enough to drive, just not legally...so my motorized bicycle is my car...thanks to you i'll be back on the road in no time! would you have any specialized tips for my situation?
Good video.

I'm very helpful brother step-by-step illustration great job bro made it easy for me thank you have a blessed day
Thanks! I am glad this video was helpful.
Well done. I have seen other "how to" videos and rarely are they as short and yet informative as yours.
Thanks, I try my best.

Glad the video helped and gave you something to do today. Helicoils are great and can be used for several things.
Thank you for the video. I got a lawn mower starter with striped bolts. Now just need to find the right ones I need
I saw someone else re-drill and tap the hole and got scared, but then I saw you just run a tap down and clean up the threads for the insertion of the heli coil and wasn't scared anymore. Amazing!!
Sometime you just have to be brave. 😀
Great video 👍 thanks so much for showing me how to properly fit a helicoil, I didn't realise how easy it is, keep up the great work /video's
So glad the video was useful for you. Helicoils are not hard to install but most people think they are and end up paying big money to have it done. Best of luck with your project.

Brilliant demonstration and very easy to understand
+b16a coupe This is one of them thing you never want to have to use but unfortunately threads do strip out and this is a great fix.
+Jason “Beeman” Chrisman well unfortunately that's why I was looking at this video, 3 bolts need doing on my exhaust side of my block ! in Ireland a garage would won't at least 150euro for the fix ?!
+b16a coupe Well I hope your able to get it fixed but I don't imagine that will be very easy to get to. Good luck!
A Sears ratcheting tap wrench works to run the tap in and out. A Time-Sert kit is better since it locks in. Use a EZ-out to remove inserts.
Awesome job. Thanks for teaching me
No problem 👍
Txs Bro I learn better than I expected 👍
Glad to hear that
Well done, good repair.

Nice video. Thanks for sharing
Awsome!!; I always wanted a vid as clear & simple as this one regarding helicoil installation!. Thank you!!👍
A very good example and a very good job. TY Sir.

Just buy the kit, you've given me a headache
@@angrypants7619 LOL! Well hopefully the kit will come with a couple of aspirins...I'll send them to ya
Thanks for the reply about fishing out the tang. Next question: If you are already tapping hole to install the helicoil, why not just install a larger bolt and skip helicoil altogether?
Joseph Buck You could do that but I think the helicoil is a safer and stronger.
becuse m8t sumtimes you cant put a bolt thru it like on my taper cover you cant go all the way thru so i am sure this will be ok ,,
Great video-i would cover up or put plastic bag into exhaust port.
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for teaching, just bought this to save my car from the dump.
If the threads for the 10/32 helicoil are stripped is there a 10/32 helicoil oversized OD threads available?
Nice job. Thank you
Nice job, but didn' t you have to wipe the cutting oil and clean it off with some carburetor cleaner or similar degreasing sprays?
Very helpful, thanks heaps for sharing!
When be needed a long thread, can be installed two inserts in the same hole ?
Great video! i have used helicoil alot and they are strong
They are a great invention! They have saved me a ton of money over the years.
Good job. Good to see how it's done. Thanx Dude
I am glad the video was helpful but usually the reason the video is viewed is not good! What did you break? Is it hard to get to?
What size would I need for a motorized bike engine ?
I have a stripped hole on the engine nice video very insightful.
I can not tell you the size. You will have to figure that out on your own. Sorry!
Nice video, Do you use a little magnet or something to remove the broken peice of the tang left over in there?
I had to take my car seat out to fix it. The bolt that attsch to to the car and car seat wont tighten. It tightens a little but then it keeps spinning. Is it because the treads are striped.
Glad you figured out the problem!
Great job helped a lot
Great hope you were able to fix your issue. Thanks for watching.
So you mean you hand tapped a bigger hole to fit a helicoil that would fit the same bolt?
So my question is, is this "helicoil" what you demonstrated is also effective when new threads are created whenever you insert a bolt incorrectly inside a threaded hole forming a different thread?
Hi, I can see the cylinder fins through the mounting holes. Why not just go with new bolts and slap a nut on the back?
Nice video by my question is the original bolts are going to fit on the new thread
+Jose Luis Moctezuma Yep sure do, you have to make sure you get the correct size Helicoils for your bolts.
Well you made that look easy. Nice job!
It really is easy after you do a couple. Good luck!
Will this work on stripped spark plug holes for 20 horse kawasaki engine with aluminum head?
My thread hole for my Kymco agility crankcase for my studs ,thanks sound like the perfect solution.
Thank you. this was very informative.
thanks, very informative, really helps.
nice, never heard of a hela coil, good information

Yeah, they are hella good!
thank for the great video. I need to helicoi my busted drain pan. any recommendation in keeping the shaving (as you tap) from getting into the pan which may later damage the engine.
Maybe a magnet.
little bit of wheel bearing grease on the tap n drill bit
Fantastic video
do you think this will work for the bleed bolt hole for coolant in my Kim 450 it is stripped and has a slow leak its In the engine case
How do you take out broken tang? Or you just leave it ?
Is it the same for cast ?
This work on an alumni oil filter housing?
Nice work help out a lot keep it up

Great vid.. But whats next after the insert of the coil? Tap new threads or just screw the bolt in? (Im new lol)
Now you would screw the bold into the helicoil just like you would with tapped threads.
Thanks for an informative video, awesome!
good job, very helpful video thanx

Nice video, thanks! A quick tip for square drive bolts or nuts or as what u encountered you can use an 8 point socket!
I have a full set of 4 point (square) sockets for that! :)
Do you need to fish the broken-off tang out of the hole at the end? If so, how do you usually do that?
Joseph Buck Does the bolt have room to go all the way in with the tang in hole? If so I would not worry about it. Anyone know if this will work on hardened steel ?
Nice vid, question.... If you do this to a stripped sump thread, you are left with the broken tang in the engine.
How do we get around this??
I was thinking the same thing. perhaps a skinny rod with a magnet on it???
helicoil is NOT the same as a key insert. a key insert is a solid piece of tube with a thread cut inside to fit the oniginal fastener . and a thread cut on the outside to fit the larger new drilled and tapped hole. it is then permanantly retained by driving in the four pin keys into the oversizeed new hole threads ,locking the insert in place. they need a little more room than a coil o/d , but are a better choice,as they can be cleaned out with a tap , in future if the application needs dissassembly and reassembly a number of times
Can the insert threads be shorted from .750inchs to 1cm? Because its a thread for my axle studs..i just have 1cm
+Q8 Fly I don't see why you couldn't shorten the coil. I do think your going to need enough threads for bolt to be secure. Good luck!
Thanks for the video bud.
+Thomas Gregoire Glad to of help, good luck!

Helicoil are perfect for fixing stripped threads. They are available in all thread sizes. If you've got a stripped "bolt hole" then use a helicoil to fix it.
This insert is made of stainless steel right and you thread it into aluminium. Do you need to glue it with loctite ?
Loctite will keep it in place.
@@JCsBees that's what I want. How likely is it that this insert will screw out without loctite ?
Not sure to be honest, I have always used loctite.
@@JCsBees I have green loctite you know that glue for metal. Isn't it too harsh ?
I wish they have that in amplifier terminal screw size.
+KeepRolling1000 They do make them in several sizes. Have you Google Helicoils sizes? Maybe check Amazon. Don't rely on your local hardware to carry all of the sizes made. Good luck!
Thanks, very helpful
I dont get it? why insert the coil once the thread has already been created from the tool?
Would this work on a car engine with stripped bolt holes?
Sure would. In the video description you can find links to purchase them.
what is the outer size of helicoil m8*1.25*30
Lock tight is going to work with the heat? That doesn't make sense.
Very nice!
Absolutely like it
Mine's in a tight spot to be using the tool. Not sure how I'm going to approach it.
+Zombie Dave Sorry to hear that. Hope your able to get it! Good Luck!
+Jason “Beeman” Chrisman Me too. It's been holding me up for awhile getting my car on the road. I should just drop the transmission but no clue how and haven't come across a good how to video yet.
you should plug that exhaust port up so the metal shavings don't accidentally get into that cylinder
1MNUTZ Very good point. Thanks for watching.

Sorry, I did not see the video. I want to get threads Helicoils

nice job ,thank you !
great vid, thank you
