  • This video is about my right foot!
I have had a lot of requests to demonstrate how I play quick doubles...i.e. the Bonham style triplets. I guess a picture, or moving picture is worth a thousand words in this case, so this is really just a close -up demo of my right foot at work. Hope it helpful.
PS. Terry Keating ( Bonzoleum ) just did an excellent video on the subject of Bonzo's bass drum doubles as well, specifically how he used them in drum beats and the Bonham Engine...he calls it the Gallop! Check it out here.... • The John Bonham Drum E...

This was very helpful today, I stuck a mirror down by my floor Tom so I could see what was going on, I was doing a lot of the work with my toes which probably made my foot tense up and made it sound awful 😞 I’m getting somewhere now thanks George

If you have a long enough footboard you can use your heel to strike and create a sort of heel toe loop. Kind of hard to do but it’s essentially the same action of the foot just positioned more entirely on the footboard.

Yeah I have about 6 old Ludwig speedings all refurbished but have been using the dw 5000 turbo when researching the new speedings
I found a video of a guy that had an old speeding and the reissue that was made in China he just bought the new speeding and found that
It’s made in Twain he weighed all the pedals and found the new one was lighter weight than the others that’s the front part where the beater
Is attached, then I found out he swapped it for the speed flyer and was more happier with it,I then researched to see what I could find out about them and found Carter McLean reviewing the new speeding and the speed flyer,in the end I bought a speed flyer as I was curious I must say it’s pretty good the feel is inbetween a dw 5000 turbo and accelerator but lighter feel then the dw 5000 ,the only thing disappointing is where it tightens onto the bass drum it has 2 rubber bits that the bass drum rests on when u tighten it this was the cheap bit and I prefer the dw swivel round bits as their more sturdy the rubber on the speed flyer is not secure I’ll have to get it stuck down again to the metal or find an alternative as if I just don’t have it it will mark the underneath of my bass drum hoop, other than that it’s a smooth pedal,it’s not over engineered like the 9000 which I found too smooth Carter mentions that in he’s review as well

Hi, I came across your and Terry's site about a week ago. Just love your expertese and enthusiasm for Bonzo. Just wanted to thank you for both for these videos on technique and relating to Led Zep. I was 20 in 1975 so grew up in their heyday, so John Bonham, Ian Paice and Simon Kirke were my hero's , and I played then in a band around the clubs of Liverpool UK.
I was never able to see John Bonham play, but have been very lucky to meet Ian Paice, a gentleman, and another great drummer.
I live about an hour from Liverpool (in Wales UK), and still play in my daughter's band. Please keep up these video's, they are so brilliant - thank you.Your technique and fluency is just amazing.

I still play in my daughter's band (Classic rock & blues) , using a Ludwig classic maple, and black beauty snare, mostly around North Wales & Chester. There's a lack of venues over here which is a shame. From one of your video's I have bought the Q2N camera, wondering what video editing software you use.

Another great video! What pedal are you using here? Looks vintage but chain driven. I would love to see how far back your beater is at rest (with your foot off the board) and how tight are your springs? I find my pedals have to be pretty tight but its a balance of finding that sweet spot with the beater in order to pull off these Bonham triplets on the bass pedal. I can't easily do the triplets on a speed king, but with my Speed Flyer they are way easier.

  • @Strellock
    @Strellock 4 роки тому +4

I think you're using a very economical heel toe technique, very efficient, all superfluous movements gaving been excised over the tears.. I mean, at this level it's hardly heel toe in the "classic" sense, but I think that's the basis of it, but with years of practice and refining.
It's a controlled rebound technique developed from a more animated heel toe basis I think. It's most likely an amalgamation of minimum slide, almost imperceptible, but you're probably using the musculature of the leg to a degree as if you were sliding, if that makes sense; so - static rebound control on a heel toe basis, that's the most precise, albeit a bit pretentious, description I would use for your double note bass drum playing.
In short, lots of playing and optimizing.
It's a great technique snapshot video for intermediate folk who have an understanding of pedal technique but might be in that limbo/plateau of not quite knowing how to refine it further. This is what they should aspire to, a very good outcome if they understand how to modify their playing to allign it more with the set of values you've probably alligned yourself with to achieve thus level of profficiency.
Basically, at your level, you're doing the minimum work for the optimum result, you have control, enough volume with room to spare, good speed, and you can probably play for days, efficient technique translates to increased stamina, longer peak effort with less time needed to recover and the risk of injury/strain is basically null.
I wish more people watched your channel, there's quite a number of videos out here on yt that don't really explain pedal technique for where it needs to be - a healthy way of playing the bass, at the beggining, that can be further optimized. Most lessons just outline the mechanics of a technique but people rarely expain to students that they can (and should) take it further as they become more experienced. Also, that it requires a level of seeking after those refinements, they don't always happen naturally, automatically, as people accumulate experience.
People can become good players on very shoddy technique, is what I mean to say, or even on technique that's a sure road to injury.
So your video is a showcase of very good, very efficient technique. This should be aspirational for the average heel toe player, although I think even slide technique players can get here if they look into limiting unnecesary pedal motions.
Anyways, great technique, you could have went a bit more in-depth, explained some of the basics, some of the refinements too, but I guess people can figure things out in their own time or just try to emulate your technique as seen.
Btw, I'll dugress, since you're talking pedal and pedal technique, I want to say that ludwig is releasing new speed king pedals, announced them at namm. They are as old school as they get, got that look, no major frame redesign, they dissasemble easily, they are fitted with a no nonsense direct drive - basically a metal link with no extra parts.
m.ua-cam.com/video/j0yit2IkA0c/v-deo.html that's a video with a general presentation of the pedal, if you can spare a few minutes. I wonder what you make of it, is it legit, is it just a sort of nostalgia reissue? What are your thoughts. I know you don't really do product videos as such, but I hope this piques your interest, I'd like to know your thoughts about it, maybe break your rule and do a gear history/overview video of the speed kings, or maybe do a small segment within some other video dedicated to the reissue.
Sorry for the extra long comment. And thanks for all the videos! I don't generally comment but I've learned a ton in 2019 from your uploads, licks, fills, grooves. And a deeper appreciation for Led Zeppelin and Bonzo.
So I want to end by wishing you a great 2020, with tons of new subscribers and lots of new videos. Your work here on yt is definitely underappreciated in terms of how many people it reaches but those it reaches are 100% enriched by it, of that you can rest assured.
