- What is a contra-alto clarinet? How does it sound? Where can I listen to it more? Here comes some answers to those questions. No history or showing how it looks (you can seek those by yourself) but many sound examples to listen (good earphones or speakers are a must). teppo.salakka@gmail.com
Sounds crisp and clear. Love It !!!
Fantastic video! Love this instrument and your playing
Very nice playing!
It is a clear sound . Love it !!!!
Thank you for letting us hear this magnificent instrument in I believe is rosewood. Selmer make wonderful clarinets. God bless you and yours. Bill. UK
Exactly, Selmer Paris Rosewood model. My favorite, no doubt (even while I enjoy playing with LeBlanc paperclip and straight metal models)
I have seen many explanations (and controversial) over the years for these beautiful low pedal tone clarinets. I find that some errors are what key the instrument is in vs what it’s lowest note is. So, if you think of this particular instrument, it is one octave below alto clarinet (comments on that for another post), contra in Eb, and contrabass clarinet being one octave lower than bass clarinet both in Bb. Then there is subcontra alto and subcontra bass in Eb & Bb respectively each one octave below the contra voice instruments. Bass clarinets extended to low C offer the playing ability of other instruments down to that range. I love lowwwww clarinets!
i play bass clarinet
Subcontras aren't usual in orchestral inventory
Thank you for this interesting presentation.
thank you for watching!
amazing thanks!
Thank you for this video, it did exactly what you intended!
Have you thought about making a video detailing how you play it so well?
DUDE! This is so awesome! My boyfriend is from there! Also you have a nice tone!
Love you and the instrument, do a multiple recording where you play a single song in each register
The Eb contra clarinet with standard low range seems more practical to me than a Bb bass extended to low C.
Good point. One explanation about why this instrument have been developed is getting the lowest bass clarinet notes to a better (and a more comfort) area of playing.
And the fact that Eb transposition reads bass clef lines, rather than having transpose Bb->Eb
I respectfully disagree. The bass clarinet *sounds* different in different ranges. And good parts for the bass clarinet took those tonal differences into account.
I think that you're missing my point: I meant that the Eb contra seems a more practical medium for the lowest notes, then the extended range for the Bb bass. Obviously, the bass is preferable for bass clarinet parts in its normal ranges.
I like this clarinet more than bass lol. Low notes for life!
What about octocontralto
Clarinet
Thats why I only like playing this instrument no the bass clarinet
This is fabulous! I must in good spirits, challenge you on my Buffet Contra-alto :)
Great! Of course there is only one Selmer...
Love it! I want one! I have been playing a lot of E-flat alto clarinet in my band, and occasionally have part for an E-flat contra-alto clarinet.
i've got mine to sell, great shape, 4800€, it is in France, look on ebay
Hello Carla.... How are you doing today.... 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
And I hope you do stay safe due to the pandemic over there.?
It sounds so cool! I play Bflat Bass clarinet
So do I - Buffet "Greenline" Bass Clarinet - but this instrument has "The Sound of My Soul".
I PLAYED THE B FLAT AND E FLAT CONTRA BASS CLARINET. LOVE THAT BASS SOUND
Comments about the name of the instrument - I also agree, that the name "Eb contra bass clarinet" could be more accurate than the "contra alto clarinet" -name, referring to lower scale. But for me, this instrument is The Queen.
musikerman52 contra bass and contra alto are 2 different things lol ones in b flat and bigger and the other is in Eb and smaller
@@izzy_potatofox1234 that's why Eb contra bass clarinet refers to that difference. My Paperclip goes down to Eb (below double bass lowest) and is only one step higher than the lowest note of a straight contra bass clarinet. So the difference is quite small... except the sound!
I forgot - the altissimi (highest) register demands different fingerings than the usual clarinet has (no hole in the f#-clef). Those fingerings are better also with the bass clarinet.
wich fingerings ?? i play contra and bass, all ijn selmer and altissimo works for bass but for contralto, i never find it ! so please help me !
I play the contra alto in my middle school band
Do you know of any stores where I can find one?
I would like to know the positions of the fingers in the notes of the altissimo register as I have never found a manual or anything like that to help ... if you have any material I would be very grateful. I loved the hymn "Keep the peace".

Here is the link to my presentation of those high tones. The highest ones can differ a lot, depending on the instrument. But just keep on experimenting and finding your own ones!
I'd really like to know if you've played the Buffet Prestige (or their newer line) and compared it to the Selmer Paris 40 contra alto clarinet. If so, how do they compare?
Happy Year 2023. No, I have only played with my two wooden Selmers and two metallic LeBlancs.
Beautiful presentation though!. I rlly wanna play this instrument. I play alto clarinet. Im also tryna learn basson, it isnt going well lol
Well yah bassoon fingering and embachere is so different. Also I know I spelled that so wrong pls don’t come for me
Finally, I found an alto clarinetist. And yes, bassoon is very difficult.
i've got a contralto like this( Selmer France)..how do you play altissimo register ?? i don't know how, there is no hole on Fsharp key and i searched for it but never find ! .........help !!
Exactly - the fingerings are a lot different in the highest part. Actually, the same fingerings work with the bass clarinet also better, than the ones with the "help" -hole. I'll try to make a video of those a bit later.
For D just play the register key with no thumb key. For E play a high G and add the throat Ab key. For F play an Ab and add the throat Ab key.
@@musikerman52 Im still waiting your video about highest fingerings, help!
@@ericgrujard8055 Sorry for the delay - this week (starting tomorrow) I'll have time ti make that tutorial video clip. Stay tuned...
i’m learning contra alto clarinet for a highschool piece since our school doesn’t have one and i’m currently a bari sax player. any advice?
Hi! Actually you have a good starting point, because the use of the muscles in blowing is quite similar. If you have been playing classical saxophone, the embouchure is a different, much more relaxed. The lower lip is covering your lower teeth, differs from the jazz saxophone. The combination of the notes and fingerings is also different. Good luck with this instrument!
thank you!!:)
Need information to place an order for your cd. Thanks, John
Please send me an e-mail teppo.salakka@gmail.com so we can proceed. You'll get the information you need by e-mail also. Greetings, Teppo
Hey
Selmer should have put a Low C on their contra alto clarinet...
A bass clarinet - player can easily doubling it
