Very cool to see. I never would have considered an alibaba instrument. But after seeing what yours is like I might have to try one out.
Yea I took the plunge to let anothers know if it was any good or not! 😂
Thank you for demo'g this. I like the way the Fobes SF sounds with it.
In my experience, most tuning issues go away after I get more used to the instrument.
As you know, as long as there isn't something dramatically wrong physically/mechanically,
all instruments have their quirks it's just a matter of adjusting to them.
I'm seriously considering purchasing one. Can't wait for you next installment!
Thanks again ...YOU ARE THE MAN!!!
thanks, yea you're exactly right, as I get used to the instruments' quirks I'll be able to accomodate to get it more in tune. The Fobes is helping a lot and the instrument is playing much better now that it's been set up properly. I highly recommend it as a great value buy!
I played this song once ❤
Great videos from your channel. I love your sharing attitude, it’s a great discovery. Maybe I shall look at Syos (and maybe Fobes too) for my old bass clarinet since I leave nearby Paris. Keep the fun and play coming up. Thank you ( btw I love your English, so easy to catch for me from France) and take care.
glad you're enjoying the series so far! Aussie English is something else all together! 😂
So that’s where my sink pipes went. I’m kidding...but seriously I’ve played a contralto clarinet in Eb. The floor used to vibrate when I played low notes. Pretty cool. 😎
this makes my eyeballs rattle for sure! 😂
Again, a nice video! When you get the repair prospective, it may be good to know if the pads are attached by screws and shimmed like the Leblanc paper clips as originally made. Thanks for bringing us along on this adventure!
Good question, I’ll be sure to ask about that!
as you know I have a leblanc paperclip Bb contra down to d.Re Tuning: The clarinet seems to be too long and that's why the low notes are flat especially with the leblanc cb mouthpiece.I toyed with cutting the lead pipe to make it in tune but a repairman talked me out of it.I have a Walter Grabner contrabass mouthpiece which i put yellow blue tack into to make the chamber smaller thus improving the intonation tremendously. The walter Grabner piece is ~US $400.Stephen Fox makes custom Bass clarinet pegs which are the same size as the the contrabass and can be made to any length.I use a standing bass clarinet peg as sitting cb peg as the supplied one is only just long enough with a low chair and flexes quite a bit.I don't have a standing peg for the contrabass. The leblanc has 2 rings for neck strap (and there are 2 hook bass clarinet neck straps -which are useless to support the weight of the cb) one just above the low E tone hole.I use a Freehand neck strap from Germany with the low e ring to hold it.Of note only Vandoren,Marca and legere reeds are wide enough for the wg and leblanc Mouthpiece.Ricos are 1mm too thin.
I'd love to try your Jinbao-And you can try my leblanc & Mouthpiece
sounds good. shoulda seen you this weekend for Yamaha! damn it! haha next time 👍
OK Brendan, I have been searching for a previously owned Lablanc 354. It is extremely elusive; so, I think I heard enough and ready to pull the trigger.
Do you have any new info on your Jimbao, new video of some last thoughts before I order it?
Thanks!
I saw you're using a syos mouthpiece, did you have to contact them and get it custom? As far as I've seen, they only make Bb and Bass clarinet mouthpieces
I played this song for region a few years ago
The ultimate expensive hobby: buying rare but expensive instruments barely used in music:)))...Joking here,a fellow clarinetist here who love this instruments and wish to play atleast one...for Me ,too expensive hobby
It is an expensive hobby, but this is the cheapest low C contra on the planet available today. It's definitely a budget build, less than half of an actual Leblanc! It's getting used more than you might think! Concert bands/recording projects/clarinet choir gigs, plus its just fun to play and tinker with 🙂
Hello Brendan, did you solve the flatness of the lower register?
how much did it cost to get this all fixed up?
Thanks for sharing your experience! Do the pieces come apart similar to the Leblanc paperclip contras? I'm curious if it can be taken apart to fit into a case like the one
Hugo Queirós has? If it is soldered together, does it look like it can be unsoldered?
unfortunately it doesn't come apart at all, it's one solid piece. Although it's a little annoying having a large case, it's quicker to set up and pack up, less moving parts means less that can go out of adjustment. I like the fabric covered case with backpack straps so it's not really an issue for me 🙂
No clue if you'll respond to this, but around how much did the repair cost? Im a college student so, Im not making tons of money but Ive been after a contrabass for awhile, wanting to play it in my college's band. Thanks for any info you can give!

Who knows if you will still reply to this, but where did you get that custom mouthpiece from that you are using on the straight up Leblanc BBflat Contra Clarinet at the end of the video?
it's a SYOS mouthpiece (Shape Your Own Sound) which is a company that 3D prints mouthpieces based on famous players and your own custom design. I personally prefer a 3D printed mouthpiece by Jared De Leon, check him out on youtube and jdwoodwind.com/shop 👍
What is the tuning app that you used?
Tonal Energy Tuner
If I may ask, how much did you spend on adjustment and setup after purchasing this?
setup cost $200 AUD 👍 pretty standard service
Thanks much

How's the instrument holding out after 2 years? Not a clarinet player at all (Oboe & assorted low brass are my normal instruments of choice), but I'm hoping to learn some day, and this has definitely piqued my interest
yeah it's holding up great, hasn't been used too much. only thing is the nickel plating is going a bit cloudy in spots, even with a specially treated nickel polishing cloth
@@musokid89 Cheers, that's good to know. Do you think that getting the silver-plated instrument instead of the nickel-plated one would help prevent that?
I don’t think, at least from this demo, Syos is really successful at making a good contrabass clarinet mouthpiece yet. Thanks for the comparison. You should try to get Jared DeLeon to print a mouthpiece for you. Way more affordable and probably way easier to play. I’ll try to make a demo video soon.
I think the SYOS mouthpiece has potential, the whole instrument is very reed/pressure sensitive overall. Jared and I have already organised one! I'll definitely do a video on it once it eventually arrives! 👍
@@musokid89 You'll love it. I find the upper register is particularly great and easy on Jared's mouthpiece.
@@tpark89 good to hear! I've just paid for it and am now anxiously awaiting it's arrival here in Australia! Do you have any videos of you playing it?
Are you still happy with this purchase now? Did you get the nickel or silver plated one?
I’m definitely still happy with it! I got the nickel plated version, though it’s going a little cloudy now. I got a Leblanc nickel polishing cloth and give it a good wipe down everytime I pack it away.
All great videos on the Jinbao contrabass, thanks so much! Have you tried, or do you know anybody else who has tried, other Jinbao clarinets? Alibaba offers a professional Jinbao soprano for only $US90 - what a bargain! Presumably they make bass clarinets, too, but I haven't found one yet.
I don't know anyone that's tried one and I probably wouldn't recommend finding out! I think for entry level clarinets there are so many better options worthy of consideration. It's hard to get your hands on a paperclip contra these days so the Jinbao is a good offering. Anything else I think I'd recommend looking elsewhere! Hope that helps 🙂
@@musokid89 What? You mean you consider the Jinbao Professional an entry level clarinet?? It's $AUS 272.00, with free shipping, on aliexpress, by the way. Not visually as much of a bargain as $US90, but it would work out the same (the $US90 didn't include shipping). And I'm not so sure about bass clarinets - they are very expensive these days. A Jinbao might be reasonable, you'd really have to try it out to know.
I think all the jinbao instruments would be pretty average, the paperclip is good because they're so rare otherwise. for a cheap bass clarinet, look at the Kessler or Ridenour, (both of which are also chinese but more reputable)
@@musokid89 I don't quite understand what your opinion of Jinbao instruments is based on. You say that you've never tried any except this contrabass clarinet, and you don't know anybody who's tried any. I don't wish to be argumentative, and I have no feelings either way about Jinbao instruments, but your opinion strikes me as having not too much validity (hope that doesn't sound too pompous). Nothing personal.
@@vintschevski that's a fair assessment! I don't have an authoritative opinion on them. I'm used to playing Buffet/Selmer/Yamaha instruments. I can't comment on what a Jinbao Bb or Bass would be like, but for those instruments there are many other better options worth considering. For paperclip contrabasses however, it's either a Jinbao or a Leblanc which are getting rarer, more expensive and in increasingly worse condition! I believe the Jinbao contra is a good buy, can't say the same for their other offerings. Hope that clears it up 👍
Anyone know what that tuning application with the emoji faces is called ?
I think it's tonal energy
@@trider55 thank you!

Is this A440?
the tuner was set to A440 but the horn was playing pretty flat overall haha
