Thanks for sharing this! You play very well indeed, and show the instrument quite effectively. From this, it really sounds as if the Ab piccolo clarinet would afford a distinct advantage to an ensemble as a highest woodwind, in that it has a very blending timbre, probably more so than the piccolo flute. It also has more power in the low range than the flute, as well as more dynamic range over most of its compass. The only potential problem is any difficulty playing it in tune -- but that is true of all the high pitch wind instruments! I understand that the Ab piccolo clarinet is used in Italian military bands, but it seems almost nowhere else anymore. This is unfortunate, as the instrument clearly has significant musical potential for a variety of situations. I once read that Arnold Schoenberg said that Eb and Ab high clarinets were very useful; this is very good advice from an important musician.
A flute in Ab is better, more stable and less squeaky. They’re actually common in the US as keyless “Bb fifes” and in the UK as 5 key “Bb marching flutes”. Or perhaps a “treble flute” in G, one of which is catalogued by Guo Musical Instruments.
I am working on this concerto for college auditions and I pulled this up in the background without looking at the description... when it started playing it caught me off guard. Bravo-- great playing!
@@glace963 In the smaller sizes, ebay has some Eb sopraninos from Germany at around $300. For $100 you can get instruments from Songway or STL in China which have decent reviews, for what those are worth. STL has a good reputation for quality control. For an upper register instrument, the Eb is available and affordable. Even a used Selmer Bundy doesn't cost too much.
@@JustClaude13 Eb Clarinets are relatively common: the piccolo clarinet I'm referring to is the Ab clarinet. As an owner of an Ab clarinet, I know from personal experience it is difficult to find one of these, as there are only three manufacturers (only one that doesn't require special order) that still make these.
Lovely playing Bravo. Leblanc used to make a one as well as a D clarinet. I was given an a flat which is a simple system but have not been able to find a mouthpiece for it. The great Jack Brymer once played a Brandenburg Concerto on E flat. If You didn't know it was him playing you would think I had sound it was a Baroque high pitched trumpet ! The Picollo clarinet concerned great when well played or terrible is sometimes known as the mechanical pig squeal. So it was nice to hear this lovely performance on the a flat clarinet. Anthony Baines, in his woodwind book, says that the D has a sweet tone. I have never seen one.
