To anyone struggling with alocasia, I've tried EVERYTHING including pon & leca, cabinet, bathroom, bright light, mid light, with no luck until I started planting them into moss (this includes mature plants, not just props!). Bright evening or morning light, with really week fertiliser & CONSTANT pest checks and I have a dozen leaves on my Frydek, which previously only had 2 decent leaves at a time for about a year. Haven't heard anyone talking about this so don't want to gatekeep!!
I am really new to being a plant parent...And I I have 3 different alocasia and have had no problems. The only thing I can say that I may be done different is that I do grow them in clear vases my soil medium is akadama with Coco coir and Miracle-Gro potting mix. I make sure that they stay moist on the soil and humid
For everyone struggling with Alocasia, follow these steps: -Clean Alocasia roots from all previous substrate -Plant Alocasia into substrate with a minimum particle size of 5mm (1/5 inch) to ensure free air circulation around the roots - water as much as you want, but at least every 7 to 10 days indoors and depending on pot size Use Coco cunks, pumice, Lava rock and zeolithe for the mix, pure pumice works too
I've never tried them because my environment is not for them and I'm just not that dedicated to specialty care. Also I constantly hear about pests with them and I'd rather not.
Your micholitziana is not an insignificant reason that I started watching your channel. I saw it in the background of one of your videos and fell in love with it and had to watch more of your videos to see how you got them to look so beautiful.
If you want more full plants I can recommend keeping multiple plants in one pot. Especially with the jewel alocasias (the ones with thicker leaves that stay low) because they don’t grow as fast as the long types. When you repot your alocasias and find corms, use those to propagate but be a bit hesitant with dividing. In my experience the plant is more happy with brothers/sisters 😉
I'd love to see your wishlist! While I adore my Jacklyn and Platinum, my Scalprum is an absolute delight! It struggled at first, even next to the humidifier, so I put it in a humidity box for a couple of months. It's been a month and a half since I took her out, and she's given me two leaves! The first has hardened off nearly black and the second is still sizing up and it's the most gorgeous shiny lizard green! And while some of the original leaves are looking a bit spent, they haven't browned. Whenever a plant is struggling, I put it in a humidity box. I'm not a fan of cabinets just because I like my plants too feel accessible - so a couple of plastic totes take on the jobs of rehabbing and propagating anyone I can't do in the kitchen window.
Yes, your wish list would be most interesting! Funny: I bought two little Alocasias with no name on them for just 5€ each about a month ago. Turns out one is the Silver Dragon, and the other one the A.heterophylla! Imagine me feeling very lucky right now! The Dragon´s Breath grows very quickly, I have it in soil, upsized the pot already, will need to do it again soon... and in there are four little plants! No cabinet, no special handling, I´m a newbie to Alocasias. But I had houseplants for more than 40 years now, I guess I can handle this fascinating Genus. (Fingers crossed.) My favourite so far is the Purple Sword (A.lauterbachiana), which grows like a weed, getting bigger every day, and having that very pretty dark purple backside of the leaves. And oh well... you, Claire, were the inspiration for getting Alocasias! Thank you so very much!💚
My absolute favorite is my Alocasia Frydek variegated and non Variegated. They are growing so well for me and are sizing up perfectly. Definitely a favorite out of my collection
I am a relatively new plant parent and was drawn to an alocacia zebrina as my first office plant, the other being a calathea beauty star. It was a sad start as a plant parent... I over watered it and that was a fail. I have had many in the past 12 months since then with varying levels of success but I really don't know enough about their care needs. My colleague put me onto your channel and I am glad. I currently have a Melo and am desperate to try again with a Jacklyn. Wish me luck as I live and learn.
I have a frydek that relentlessly gets spider mites, and no matter how many times I cut it back, it gets them again. So my theory is that the spider mites are laying eggs in the brown papery parts on the base of the plant, and so I removed all of that off of one of them and treated it and I’m waiting to see the new growth to see if the mites continue.
I must say, I adored this video and you!! You are so knowledgeable, soothing and absolutely gorgeous. Hearing how passionate you are about this genus only just renews my love for casias! I have a poly, silver dragon, and black velvet! I want a variegated frydek soooo badly! Yours is stunning 😍
25:55 I am a crazy plant lady... as soon as the plants arrive to my home, I will wash the soil off and put them into nutrition solution. I have done the same with all my alocasias. I can see the roots through the glass vases/jars so I hope they will survive my attack. This was about two weeks ago and they still look fine. New leaves growing, corms are forming, roots are not rotting... We'll see in couple months time 😁
Watched this great video this morning and made a list of the Alicasias. Then I thought, I wonder if Lowe's might have any or any other interesting plants. I didn't expect any because of cold weather coming. I decided no more than 2 plants so I went in with no cart. Much to my surprise they had a beautiful syngouium And 2 varieties of Alicosias. They were beautiful, healthy, large size plants for $19.99. my lucky day. Thank you for the great videos.
I bought few alocasia plants in the last month and I keep checking them five times a day, lol. Not for pests, just to get my eyes on them 😍 They are gorgeous... jacklyn, frydek, dragon scale and silver dragon. Five frydek variegated corms are still on their way. They are travelling all the way from Phillipines to UK so I hope at least one of them will sprout and that it will indeed be a variegated frydek. We'll see 😁
I bought a hoya off a local market place and the lady gifted me an alocasia polly! My first ever alocasia! Still not sure how I feel about the genus in general but very curious to grow it! You've got a lovely collection btw! 😍
Your alocasias are beautiful! Re: your fun fact about Alocasia Jacklyn/Tandurusa, to my understanding Jacklyn is not the person who discovered this alocasia. It had been known to locals and researchers for a long time before Jacklin but it was popularized and sold online internationally by a seller named Jacklin. There was some controversy on if they were poached but apparently it was legal because the area she took them from weren’t protected lands. In the beginning of the pandemic, I think most of the plants that were sold were taken from the wild but I think most of the ones sold in stores now are tissue culture.
Ah, I’ve just ordered my first Alocasia today, and that’s going to be a Zebrina ❤ It looks to me as if she’s not the most showy type, since Alocasias tend to look so wild oftentimes, but I just love the simplicity of her look so much! I’m also getting ready to take a plunge into semi-hydro for her sake, following your example 🙃 and if I’ll have any luck growing her, I’ll consider a Tigrina and Stingray next..I think I have a type 😂 Your Melo looks so absolutely cute though, I feel the temptation rising 😂
I've just dipped my toes in the alocasia genus. I've been admiring them for 4 years and finally took the plunge. For my very first 2 I've gone with the Regal shield and the black velvet. It hasn't been a week yet since I unboxed them but I'm so excited. Finger crossed! I decided to test the Anthirium waters at the same time with a baby Veitchii 😅
I'm currently obsessed with Alocacia so feel free to make as many videos as you want on them 🥰My current favourite is my Alocasia macrorrhiza splash 😊 And even though I don't have them, I do love the look of the Alocacia black velvet pink varigata and Alocacia silver dragon varigata😍 I'd love to see an in depth video about how to harvest and care for Alocasia corms 💚
still laughing from the beginning! my addiction of alocasias will never end. i remember seeing one on your channel 2+ years ago and falling in love. i have a dragons breath on way from grow tropicals, cannot wait! great video, thanks again claire 😊
Off topic but I love you hair blowing look. Reminds me at mermaid Ariel walking through the oceans. 🌊 Always enjoy watching your videos. I’m finally getting successful with alocasia. thanks to your advice trying out semi hydro and staying on top with fertilising. Since then no issues so far🍀i adore my Jaclyn, dragon scale, cuprea and sinuata. I can’t get enough from the incredible texture. Of course I would love to see your alocasia wish list plants 🌱
My first alocasia (dragon scale) has just arrived today and it's so beautiful 🥺 i hope it will survive in my care, so that i can expand my alocasia collection coz you gave me a lot of inspiration with this video 😂
Recently fallen absolutely head of heels for the Alocasia Nebula. Managed to stock it through work for £13 a pot. Love the stems more than the leafs but the leafs are still very funky. Definitely worth scoping out
Yay! Love to see how other people's Alocasia experiences compare to mine! Can't wait for my Bisma to get like yours and Heterphylla has Also been great for me! I have both the Corazon and Dragon's breath! Both stunning 🧡🧡 I personally, would love a wishlist video!
Regal Shield and Jacklyn/in are my all time favorites. An absolute baby-making machine is Pink Dragon. "Love & Hate You to the end of the world" is my Alocasia Bambino
I looove your alocasias! ❤ They are absolutely gorgeous 🤩. I only got my first one a few weeks ago - sinuata baby with two leaves ❤. I hope it will love me as much as I am loving it.
My favorites at the moment are my nobilis, okinawa silver and odora aurea. I'd love to see your wishlist! It'd probably inspire me to get another alocasia myself lol
I really love alocasias. I have all mine in semi-hydro and it works well. I think my favourite is the Watsonia (sp?). I have really been admiring the variegated dragon scale but still a bit too spendy for me. The Amazonica is the first I got and it is still doing great.
Love Alocasias I do not have issues with them (never have had pests) They do need high humidity ,sun and warmth (mine stay in my larger bathroom) for me they are just beautiful I have never been able to keep a spider plant alive I can grow orchids but not a spider plant as they always die ):
I love my heterophylla! I currently have it outside on the north side of my house. It only gets dappled sunlight in the morning and early evening and in the shade if my house the rest of the day. All of its leaves are facing down because it's getting too much light! And my melo...my melo, I love my melo and you're right, the camera doesn't do it justice. I got mine in the winter and had so many issues with it, but it is finally doing well outside. I have some corms propagating inside and a number of corms sprouted with the mother plant as well as a random corm I didn't notice that got potted up with my Easter cactus back in spring! I also really love my Alocasia cuprea 'red secret'. The color, the shininess of the leaves, the color 😍! I also have a number of baby Alocasia that I'm so looking forward to seeing grow up!
Love your Alocasias! My Jacklyn is extremely sensitive and I’m about to give up on her…she’s been on the brink of death twice and I think the next time I’m not having it, I’m letting her go. I have a sinuata and I love it. I chopped it back a while ago so it’s not as big as I’d like it to be. My dragon scale and it gives me sport variegation from time to time. My daughter was the one that noticed it about three or four years ago. It did not have any when I purchased it so it was a total surprise. I do agree with you about the Melo, can’t describe how interesting it is, you just have to get one. I’m kind of surprised you don’t have a Cuprea…they are so weird looking in a good way…and yes, the corms are very rewarding. I have less than 10 Alocasias in my collection because I’ve dove in head first into Hoyas…obsessed. 😅
Killed my Polly after having it for a while, it never grew more than 3 leaves, but found a corm in the soil, the little guy is just growing its second leaf now, all happy in semi hydro, fingers crossed I can keep this one going! Obviously the dream is to have giant, super happy alocasia like you, its a frigging pipe dream, but I carry on trying 😅
I jsut bought my first and had two in a surprise sad plant set. Not my favourite look-wise, as I prefer bushierplants, but seeing yours I am excited to grow them. Hopefully I´ll be able to, as one was labelled `hard to care for` 😐
I would recommend trying again with one that has thicker leaves (eg silver dragon, black velvet) because they're so much more forgiving and you'll learn what they need easily
Ayeeeeee I have a dragons breath coming in the next week! I’m so excited! Alocasias are I think my faves ❤️ Also I have a sprouted variegated frydek corm working on becoming a big strong plant ❤️
I just bought an Alocasia Polly today. The leaves are really dark and looks gothic for Halloween. I hope I can keep it alive until then, lol. I’m watching for tips.
I only have two young Alocasias. My Stingray is growing, but my Silver Dragon is putting out leaf after leaf! My Silver Dragon is currently one of my top favorite plants in my collection of currently 102 plants. I think that I would shed tears if I lost it! I am thinking of getting a third Alocasia, but don't know which one (would have to stay on the smaller side). Maybe a Melo, idk. Btw Ross is awesome!
what a coincidence!! catching this video after I just came home with a absolutely stunning, fully black Alocasia Antoro Velvet🖤 But I love my black zebrina too of course 🥰
@@mwatson4970 not sure tbh but internet doesn't mention anything scary about this one. Will monitor to see if she complains about the location and adjust accordingly. It's easy to monitor because I cannot stop going and looking at the leaves from up close and feeling the fuzz 🤣
I spent hundreds of them in the past. i tried organic, soilless, leca, semi hydro, semi shade, more sun, they died everytime. they aren’t just for me. Calatheas are thriving for me though.
Alocasias are my absolute favourite genus! While most of my alocasias are still little babies, I can say proudly that my favourite is currently the Silver Dragon. It's also my guests's favourite most of the time. I got two alocasias Dragon's Breath babies at the end of last week and damn, they are already giving me a bit of trouble, they are super droopy even tho I've repotted them in Fluval Strat. They are at the bottom of my list right now just because of that, hahaha. I'm also in love with my baby variegated bambino, she is giving me a third leaf and it makes me very happy! I didn't know about Sinuata's situation... I'll keep an eye out for one ^-^
I only have an Alocasia stingray. One of my all-time favorite plants. I've had at most 9 leaves and was down to 3. I've been pest treating just in case and have a new leaf unfurling. I would love to see your updated wish list. 💚🌱🪴🌴
Have you never done the Darth Vadar voice through a fan? Luuuke, I yam your faaaathaaaa! You just haven’t really lived, have you?! 😂❤ Still trying to figure out my Sinuata, put her in leca over a year ago, went dormant dropped her leaves, came back and only wants to give me 3-4 leaves but tons of inflos! But it’s never been bigger than yours really, didn’t know it could get bigger lol
I am struggling with the exploding growth of my Alocasia Imperial Red and where the heck I can put it... besides already wanting an Alocasia Regal Shield and Antoro Velvet soon too 😂. I'm happy to be a successful Alocasia-head while Caladiums I struggle with. So weird! Love the video though.
I love the Alocasia Azlanii and the Alocasia Antoro Velvet - both with very dark red-purple-black leaves. However, taking care of Alocasias is a mystery. More/less light or water, soil/semi-hydro/moss - they never seem to be entirely happy. On top: thrips, spidermites - ah! I don't know - our relationship is complicated
My variegated Alocasia Frydek has been giving me so much trouble :( she's in the one leaf club, with a 99% white leaf thats starting to turn but the next leaf isnt read to split from the stem yet (hopefully that makes sense). I'm not sure what to do with her at the moment.
I got a new Alocasia and I have no idea what it is! The lower leaves look very silver dragon-ish, but slightly darker grey and then the two new leaves have such a deep V sinus. I’m not sure if it’s a fluke? Or a hybrid? I can say that the stems are green with purple speckles!
Ciao sono una tua fan italiana. Adoro i tuoi video sono sempre interessanti e per nulla noiosi. Ti chiedo a proposito di Alocasie, secondo te soil ninja grossolano va meglio di Pon per tutte le Alocasie?
I know I must be the anomaly but I have had nothing but good luck with alocasia. I am a total plant person and the one plant I kill more than any other plant is basic Lavender. 4 summers in a row and I killed them all.
I look at an alocasia and it rots. On the flip side, I have developed the ability to save any alocasia from near rot death…….. just to rot it again 😩🤦♀️🤷♀️ I have been able to rehab rhizome rot, several times.
You just helped me realize what Alocasia I have. The new Alocasia platinum. I found it at a big box store. Yours has tiny yellow spots like mine does. Can you tell me what you think yours is? Just humidity issue possibly?
Caladiums usually have much thinner leaves, and the veins are minimal or very fine and flexible. Also Alocasia typically are more solid colors on front and back, while caladium usually have brighter colors and mottling.
Ii don't understand why UA-camrs have such a problem with pests. I have over 100 plants and i never gey pests. My plants are all grouped together as i only have limited windows. I must just be lucky i guess
I would suggest if you want to buy more Alocasia that you invest in a company in the UK that manufactures air conditioning because of global warming everyone is going to need an air conditioner . And you will have more money to buy plants then you will have lots of money and be rich and can lots more plants ! It is 91°F today
Ao did you got any solutions yet?
I actually have mine in moss but the growth is a bit slow

Interesting, I’ve heard and read numerous times that Alocasias are heavy feeders.
Try fluval
For everyone struggling with Alocasia, follow these steps:
-Clean Alocasia roots from all previous substrate
-Plant Alocasia into substrate with a minimum particle size of 5mm (1/5 inch) to ensure free air circulation around the roots

Use Coco cunks, pumice, Lava rock and zeolithe for the mix, pure pumice works too
Thank you!
I gave up on Alocasias and admire them from afar. ❤
I gave up last year but I miss them so much I decided to try again after watching this video
I am THHHHIIIISSSS CLOSE. 😂😂😂
I've never tried them because my environment is not for them and I'm just not that dedicated to specialty care. Also I constantly hear about pests with them and I'd rather not.
Alocasia Amazonica is so beautiful and easy to grow!
@@evasilvalayton758if you try again, try semi hydro for them!! It’s the only thing keeping mine alive lol
Your micholitziana is not an insignificant reason that I started watching your channel. I saw it in the background of one of your videos and fell in love with it and had to watch more of your videos to see how you got them to look so beautiful.

Beautiful alocasia collection; thanks for sharing Claire!
I only have an Alocasia amazónica but I’ve recently fallen in love with it again after neglecting it. They’re such interesting looking plants!

Thank you for sharing the video. I don't have a hand for Alos but that dragon breath and Frydek are stunning :-)
I jsut bought my first and had two in a surprise sad plant set. Not my favourite look-wise, as I prefer bushierplants, but seeing yours I am excited to grow them. Hopefully I´ll be able to, as one was labelled `hard to care for` 😐
I’ve been thinking about collecting them, but when I tried before they died.
I will try again
I absolutely love them!
I would recommend trying again with one that has thicker leaves (eg silver dragon, black velvet) because they're so much more forgiving and you'll learn what they need easily
Great choice for number one! I just got a teeny tiny one🤞
Ayeeeeee I have a dragons breath coming in the next week! I’m so excited! Alocasias are I think my faves ❤️
Also I have a sprouted variegated frydek corm working on becoming a big strong plant ❤️
I just bought an Alocasia Polly today. The leaves are really dark and looks gothic for Halloween. I hope I can keep it alive until then, lol. I’m watching for tips.
Thanks for such lovely inspiration
I was just looking at an Antoro last week. Wonder how easy that type is comparatively?
@@mwatson4970 not sure tbh but internet doesn't mention anything scary about this one. Will monitor to see if she complains about the location and adjust accordingly. It's easy to monitor because I cannot stop going and looking at the leaves from up close and feeling the fuzz 🤣
Hi Claire! Do you have any tips on removing algae from clear propagations vessels I water?
Also! I loved this video and would love a wish list video.
I spent hundreds of them in the past. i tried organic, soilless, leca, semi hydro, semi shade, more sun, they died everytime. they aren’t just for me. Calatheas are thriving for me though.
I've watched this video 4 times and I just went out my local nursery and I bought a Jacquelyn.
Would love to hear your wish list! It introduces me to different alocasias.
I would love a video of your wishlist Alocasias! My favourite too is my dragons breath 🪴
The Frydek is just so so stunning. One day….
Those are the most beautiful alocasia
I only have an Alocasia stingray. One of my all-time favorite plants. I've had at most 9 leaves and was down to 3. I've been pest treating just in case and have a new leaf unfurling. I would love to see your updated wish list. 💚🌱🪴🌴
My top five Alacia could be my regal shield, my Zabrina, my stingray, my black velvet and my Jacqueline
Have you never done the Darth Vadar voice through a fan? Luuuke, I yam your faaaathaaaa! You just haven’t really lived, have you?! 😂❤
Still trying to figure out my Sinuata, put her in leca over a year ago, went dormant dropped her leaves, came back and only wants to give me 3-4 leaves but tons of inflos! But it’s never been bigger than yours really, didn’t know it could get bigger lol
The black ninja and silver dragon are my current favorites. I want a dragon’s breath though. 😉
My melo grows in stages, 2 or 3 new leaves close together and then nothing for a few months (it keeps flowing constantly & I keep chopping them off 😂)
They can grow in full hydro, which solves most pest issues.
Hi would you recommend the fine or coarse semi hydro from soil ninja for alocasias? Thanks! Love your content!
Hi Claire what mix did you have you alocasia melo please as mine is straggling Thank you
I love the Alocasia Azlanii and the Alocasia Antoro Velvet - both with very dark red-purple-black leaves.
Can you give us plant soil that the allocations need to thrive on
Love it❤
Does anyone know what the copper thingie which keeps floppy leaves upright called?
Have you tried using systemic granules on your Alocasia portodora?
I’ve heard systemic granules can like basically hyper breed spider mites.
Have you had any alocasias bloom for you/have you considered hybridising them?
Most beuatiful
Do you have air conditioning in your flat? Btw, I love my Alocasia Amazonica!❤️
Currently awaiting the arrival of 5 alocasia babies. I'm totally blaming you Claire
I love these but for me Cuprea is my favorite
Do you have the Alocasia Red Secret?
I look at an alocasia and it rots.
On the flip side, I have developed the ability to save any alocasia from near rot death…….. just to rot it again 😩🤦♀️🤷♀️ I have been able to rehab rhizome rot, several times.
I have a stingray and little dancer ❤
You just helped me realize what Alocasia I have. The new Alocasia platinum. I found it at a big box store. Yours has tiny yellow spots like mine does. Can you tell me what you think yours is? Just humidity issue possibly?
Question, what is the difference between an alocasia and a caladium? I have a plant that I’m not sure which it is.
Caladiums usually have much thinner leaves, and the veins are minimal or very fine and flexible. Also Alocasia typically are more solid colors on front and back, while caladium usually have brighter colors and mottling.
Caladiums also have larger, wider tubers, whereas Alocasias grow from more narrow and upright corms/rhizomes.
my wish alocasia is dragon moon
any alocasia that stay relatively small. ?
Ii don't understand why UA-camrs have such a problem with pests. I have over 100 plants and i never gey pests. My plants are all grouped together as i only have limited windows. I must just be lucky i guess
How many alocasias do you have?🤩😍
I would suggest if you want to buy more Alocasia that you invest in a company in the UK that manufactures air conditioning because of global warming everyone is going to need an air conditioner . And you will have more money to buy plants then you will have lots of money and be rich and can lots more plants ! It is 91°F today
It's not hot in UK ever... Maybe a day or two
