  • An attempt to understand Bir Zamanlar Anadolu'da / Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, exploring the themes and character arcs in Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan's crime masterpiece, from 2011.
I view the film as a kind of ghost-story, as the doctor, the prosecutor and others, are haunted by decisions from their past. It has a bearing on the murder case and its autopsy especially - this theme is referred to as "the sins of adults".
The analysis involves looking more closely at the apple scene, the mukhtar scene, the autopsy scene etc.

Doctor hides the detail of Yasar being buried alive because the punisment for killing somebody by burying them alive is more than just killing someone normally. He hides it because of his mercy to the little kid so his biological father Kenan can get out of the prison earlier. The blood splashing to his face symbolizes the fact that he is now a part of the crime as well because he hid an significant evidence of the murder case.

Scene of the fallen apple. I am very lucky to understand Turkish and able to watch this masterpiece in its own language.

At the monologue scene between ''Arab'' and ''Doctor'', Arab responces Doctor's monologue as: - What have you done Doctor? You burried us alive!, as a metaphorical joke.
Doctor is a nihilist as well. He relates all those fuss with his own personal struggle-story. He burried himself while he still alive and that is a kind of suicide to punish his personal past. All those characters are similar with his own thoughts. He watches everyone and everything as his own story. Arab, public attorney, commissar, lover/wife, child, killer and the death...
Amazing story to describe a typhoon in the soul of a person.

Doctors concealment of Yasar being burried alive is also act of mercy to Kenan because as per Turkish crime law, murder has categories, first one is being planned and second is “with monstrous thoughts” burryimg someone alive means tortured to death with monstrous thoughts it is often punished with life sentence without parole in worst jails in Turkey. He mercied to Kenan but tainted himself.

Great analysis! I would like to add: Throughout the movie we did not hear any confession from the doctor. Doctor is someone with silence and all other characters are reflecting themselves on him through verbal confessions.
But one specific scene where doctor looks through the window and there is a small cat trying to hide itself from strong wind under the trash bin. After this observation doctor slowly turns to the camera and looks directly, similar to breaking the 4th wall.
To my understanding it is the climax of the movie, where the sight of a doctor conveys the idea:
Hiding from storm under 'something'. But this 'something' is a 'memory' (trash bin) with full of 'sins' (trash).
Doctor confesses by looking at us at the same time 'judging' us. 'It is judgement that defeats us' - Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Apocalypse Now). All characters are defeated by themselves by judging the past.
Waiting for your analysis of his last film.

Amazing interpretation and analysis! I am originally from Turkey, that is why, familiar with the mood of characters. However, human is human everywhere and our psychology is universal.
Note that I really liked your analysis on apple scene! Nice to have such a talented director, Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

Isn’t it also implied that Kenan’s slow-witted brother may have been the one who actually killed Yasar, and Kenan is taking the brunt of the blame onto himself in order to protect him? That would mirror the doctor’s decision to hide part of the truth at the end.

    • @CinemaAutopsy
      @CinemaAutopsy  3 роки тому +1

Yes, you're right, but if I remember correctly, the only thing that points towards that option is the moment when the brother starts crying and Kenan tells him to be quiet. Or did I forget something else? Hard to establish a complete runthrough of that possibility when it's not explored more than that, even though it's worth considering.

@@CinemaAutopsyI was haunted by the face of Kenan in the back of the car…..at one point in the film, there is a halo of light that shines around his head…he looks like an icon of the anguished Christ on the cross, crucified for sins of others, the sins of the all the world (as portrayed by ancient religious art iconography.)

On the scene Yasar's death body found, Kenan's brother cried and whispered "I killed, I killed" then Kenan shout at him. Kenan from the beginning said " there must be a ball (round shape) tree". In Turkish ball is used to imply homosexuality. Yasar did not have underwear as detected at the autopsy. Six officers hardly carried the death body in the country, Could Kenan even with his brother carry him? The murder not investigated, but Kenan took the responsibility for an unknown reason.@@CinemaAutopsy

below are some samples of your mastery.
    "
    "
On it's surface (with a great music)
The burial of Yasar is not the only one the film is concerned with.
As we get to know these men better, we learn how some of them have burial parts of their past too.
The film's mastery is one of managing to entwine and uncover both.
The film leaves us with this question.
Is it sometimes right to bury the truth to avoid hurting someone?
especially so if that something is what the film invites us to consider.
The meat of the story is not really in the search for the body.
It is somehow woven into the fabric of these vast endless hills.
