Why Simon Pegg Hates Running Zombies
Zombie movies have undergone a big change over the past 20 years or so, and Simon Pegg is not fond of it. In this video essay, I'll explain why he thinks this ruins the metaphor of the zombie.
Films featured: Train to Busan, Land of the Dead, Night of the living dead, Shaun of the dead, World War Z, 12 years a slave, Zombie Child.

The Dark Knight - The Yin & Yang of Batman & The Joker | Character analysis
Переглядів 363Рік тому
The story structure in the Dark Knight's opening points to a special dynamic between the Joker and Batman. This essay breaks down what I call the yin & yang relationship which the opening points to. This bond between Batman and the Joker is reflects in the character of Two-Face and the change he goes through.
The Big Short - Storytelling with HAIR in the restaurant scene

Steve Carell's (Mark Baum) haircut in the Big Short's (2015) restaurant scene with the CDO manager is funny, but also a deliberate, meaningful artistic choice. From a storytelling perspective, I explore what could be the motivation behind it. WARNING: SPOILERS. Why THIS is the key scene to Ken Loach's Kes
Переглядів 6 тис.3 роки тому
An analysis of the key scene in Kes, exploring the themes and main character of Ken Loach's social-realist masterpiece from 1969. Should be helpful to new writers looking to understand the power of subtext. In essence, the subtext in one key scene seems to establish a parallel between its protagonist, Billy Casper, and the bird he's training, Kes. WARNING: SPOILERS. WATCH NEXT: The Thin Red Lin...

The real meaning behind O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Переглядів 62 тис.3 роки тому
In order to understand the real meaning and the symbolism in O Brother, Where Art Thou? you need to fully understand the poem it's inspired by: The Odyssey. Here I compare the Coen Brothers' film to Homer's work, and you'll notice that both are tales of transformation. In the poem, Odysseus and his men were war criminals who are punished by the Gods by being transformed into animals. In this fi...
Troy Analysis - How it got Achilles and The Iliad WRONG!

This essay is a Troy analysis, exploring the character Achilles and the themes of Wolfgang Petersen's swords and sandals epic, from 2004, comparing it to Homer's The Iliad. This essay is therefore also a The Iliad analysis. I'm comparing how Achilles, played by Brat Pitt, appears in the film Troy to how he appears in The Iliad. This Troy analysis also sheds light on the role of Hector and Patro...

Witt’s message is to never give up your soul your fire no matter what horrible things happen around you or you take part in. He’s an infinitely competent and effective soldier but he knows that this is bad and evil thing and times and that there is peace and beauty to be held and nurtured. Nevertheless he doesn’t shrink from his responsibilities in the circumstances ultimately sacrificing himself for his comrades. Never give up your fire.

The chaplain sounds like a liberal Democrat. They often make associations that have nothing to do with each other. If they want their policy to sound good they say it will help people...even though thousands of other people are going to suffer going to work to pay for these benefits that allow other people to stay home. If they want an opponent to sound bad they call them Hitler.

I would never take anything away from Saving Private Ryan but I was definitely more moved by The Thin Red Line

    • @hotcakesism
      @hotcakesism Місяць тому

Same, Ryan had the superb opening sequence on Omaha Beach but the rest of the film is kind of a drag. I was pretty much rolling my eyes when they were all in the church talking about their past lives. That scene and their dialog felt so cliche, albeit necessary to flesh out the characters more, but it was pretty much disconnected from the rest of the film and felt like an obligatory but noncommittal attempt at character development. In TTRL, however, the characters' personalities, motivations, and belief systems were integral to the plot. I think it's kind of ironic that a movie with so many different characters that so many people found hard to follow (including myself when I first saw it in theaters) is entirely driven by character development. SPR is a genre-defining spectacle, but I keep coming back to TTRL; it's got so much to mull over and it really sticks with you. I've rewatched the thin red line and listened to its brilliant soundtrack so many more times than saving private ryan.

If you are looking for a connection to an animal, it's the politician. The breaking point is when you realise the craziness of it all, in that there is freedom. Have you ever considered any real freedoms? Do humans truly have a heart of so call darkness.

Key Differences in the Film "Troy" 1. Menelaus' Death: • Film: Killed by Hector during the duel with Paris. • Myth: Survives the Trojan War, returns to Sparta with Helen. 2. Agamemnon's Death: • Film: Killed by Briseis during the sack of Troy. • Myth: Survives the Trojan War, killed by Clytemnestra and Aegisthus upon his return to Mycenae.

On Achilles’ choice: you say making it about going to war instead of home is worse as it doesn’t relate to film’s central conflict. But the film’s central conflict is not same as Iliad (Achilles honor w Agamemnon). It’s about which philosophy of war and valor will win out between Achilles and Hector. For this change, the choice at beginning works.

TBF most things in written format are purposely butchered because of limited run time, resources and deadlines. So picking and choosing the main characters has to be done. Meaning, less important characters (who aren't meaningless mind you) will get their on screen time cut. I get the disappointment of the movie not being faithful to the source material but their goal didn't really align with the fans. All they wanted was to portray this ancient greek hero who was a leading figure in the fall of troy. That infamous story of the trojan horse that even I read in childrens picture books back when i was 5?? They just wanted to make a movie for money. Because who wouldn't want to watch Brad Pitt portray an ancient Greek Hero

you probably didn't understand what he meant about psychoanalysis and therapy (which i disagree btw and it's okay, people can disagree on things and still agree on many others). the main gist is that it is a modern thing trying to "correct" everything, including the human mind. and dark corners of the mind are dark for a reason, it's part of the human nature, there is no need to shine a light on it (doesn't mean it will stop existing). this has nothing to do with what just happened with this guy. and this is not at all therapy or analysis by any means. unless you think those are just someone asking you questions, like an interview. mr herzog is a very complex individual, you must understand he (like many creative people) tends to see the world through poet's lens, not through pragmatic/utilitarian lens. it's obvious seeing what he says about like skateboard ppl or very mundane things. it is very reductionist to boil down his remarks as just what you said
