Tom Waits is one of the few genius songwriters who never aged out of their genius. His stuff actually got better over the decades.

Im inclined to credit Kathleen Brennan for a lot of that, her incredible clarity and gift for writing allowed Tom to follow madder inclinations of sound and concept, and still come away with moving, structurally magnificent songs. He hasnt worked alone for a LONG time, to his and our benefit.

Nah he peaked around Rain Dogs/Heart Attack and Vine, early 80s, to Bone Machine and Franks Wild Years early 90s.
Since then the quality is less.

I discovered Tom Waits in my early 20's and have loved him ever since. I listen more to his later work, but a few of those early songs are just so unbelievably melancholic. Perfect when you're drinking alone, contemplating your mistakes, searching for the heart of Saturday night... even if it's on a Tuesday...

@@tvm2209 @TVM Very hard to say. His output is quite varied, and if you don't like the first five songs you listen to, you still might fall in love with the sixth. I'll just give you some of my favorite songs: Ol' 55, Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You, Downtown Train, That Feel, All The World is Green, Always Keep a Diamond in Your Mind, Hold On, Cold Cold Ground, Tom Traubert's Blues.

@@tvm2209 I'm late, but I'll add some Waits songs, that have some vigor!
Goin' Out West, I'll Be Gone , Down, Down, Down and Down In The Hole. Listening to those songs-every morning-is medically proven to boost your testosterone 35 to 50%. Goin' Out West alone probably does it, but add the others, just to be sure. After that, play Goin' Out West again just cuz it's awesome. That's not my opinion, it's science. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Tom Waits is a unique treasure. Nothing moves me like his music. Songs like "Innocent When You Dream" are magic. Listening from "Closing time" to "Real Gone" is one of the greatest things you can do for your soul. At roughly the age of 30, he meets his wife, quits drinking and commences to changing music forever.
I hope it's not the last we see such brilliance in art. It seems all but dead these days. No one can paint the humanity in all people like Waits did. People are too busy backing politicians and corporations to notice the beauty, and ugliness in all people.
    Waits, is truly a treasure.

Lyrics like "We can always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal" "Blew a hole in the hood of a yellow Corvette" "fill your pockets up with earth, get yourself a dollars' worth" "Dyed my hair in the bathroom of a Texaco" so many interesting lyrics and that gravelly voice! AHO LEX! Thank you for this commentary - it brings back my youth. Saw Tom perform ~ so outstanding ~ at the Harvard Square Theatre - November 18, 1978. Leon Redbone was the warm-up act and did a finger puppet show. Tom was, by then, doing his gritty grunge cabaret "Piano has been drinking" / "Small change got rained on by his own 38" tunes. That was when I worked at the old MIT Coop too (when it was inside the Student Center on Mass Ave.) That group of coworkers were PAHTEE City -- end of the week after work playing darts at Dunsters Bar in the basement of the old Oxford Ale House (corner of Palmer & Church - also the Square). Those really were the days, my friend. Love your podcast btw!!!

the guest saying "when a young person writes a sad song, they almost seem more willing to go to a more hopeless place, because they have ? ahead and older artists want to look at the bright side of things, which i also think comes from the wisdom of aging, it's a more realistic position." ...

'Cause they can't see beyond today

Sometimes life don't leave you alone"

TS Eliot published The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock when he was 22.
    “I grow old ... I grow old ...
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
I do not think that they will sing to me.
I have seen them riding seaward on the waves
Combing the white hair of the waves blown back
When the wind blows the water white and black.
We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

It's hard not to see an echo of Bob Dylan's 1966 'I Want You' in Tom Waits 'I Want You'. Even the voices aren't that dissimilar at that stage of their respective careers.

Waits’ early work was a little folky for my taste. But when Swordfishtrombones came out in '83, I think he really came into his own, non-commercially and artistically. The whole album has a weird, gritty sound, and a old sheen of post-apocalyptic experimentalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to no one, but I think Tom has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
