I don't know a lot about this Tom Waits guy but he seems to have an interesting story arch. Releasing some 'normal' sounding albums in the 70s like Closing Time, Nighthawks At The Diner, Small Change and The Heart of Saturday Night. His music seem to have take a weird turn in the 80s, releasing albums like Swordfishtrombones and arguably his most popular album to date, Rain Dogs.
Today, my dad shows me a bunch of songs from Tom Waits. This video is my reaction of Tom Waits and my review of Tom Waits!

Good news for you guys is you'll probably live long enough to see the golden age that comes after. Gen X and older, probably not.

You've got a cool dad. I had to find Tom Waits on my own, like some musical orphan wandering through the music stores (it was a store that had these things called "CD's" and "Vinyl", you payed $15-$20 for a thing called an "album", a collection of music that generally had a theme tying it together...)
Tom Waits is a tough one to get into. When I first heard him I was interested but kind of repulsed. Then I'd listen again a few months later, kind of abandon it again. Then one day you'll have it pop into your head and it's like "what is that wonderful song?!" Go back and all of a sudden it just clicks. That how it worked for me. Now he's one of the few artists that I always keep on my phone, the entire body of work. Kind of like the Grateful Dead; "They aren't the best at what they do, they're the only that do what they do" - Bill Graham - Micheal Scott

Waltzing Matilda means drinking or drunk. That's what Tom told me at McGlinchy's bar on 15th Street in Philadelphia back in 1973 or 4. That was right before he met Ricky Lee Jones. Tom is America's last great beatnick and one of the coolest people I ever met.

Tom Waits: a classic, never goes out of style ~~ you can't go out of style if you are a true artist ~~ you are never in "style", you are your own, that reaches across generations, across genres ~~ you don't fit in one, you are singular, you are timeless.
There is no other Tom Waits, no one like Tom Waits.
Our art evolves, as we evolve, as we age, as we grow, as we change, yet remain the same, somehow we always know a Waits song, no matter what era it is from ~~ it will hit you in the gut, always.

Tom Waits is my favorite artist, and he has like 4 albums in my top 20 oat. However, some other albums that I hold to that level of esteem are Bottomless Pit, Twin Fantasy, AFUT, and Schlagenheim (all of which are at least adjacent to albums that Jason has been skeptical about) so take that pops

@@KyleReidMu ooh ok if you're gonna check out a full album there are two directions you can go. If you want to look into his 70s sound, you can't go wrong with Small Change, and then check out Nighthawks and Blue Valentine. If you're more intrigued by his more experimental 80s-present output, I would start with Rain Dogs, then Bone Machine, then my personal favorite of his Mule Variations, then probably Real Gone. There's a lot of amazing albums in between each of these but these feel like the essentials to get a full understanding of his style. His voice is hard to get used to but once it clicks there's nothing better.

Your dad is 100% on the money. Tom Waits is a gift to music. You'll appreciate being introduced to him years from now. See Tom while he's still touring, if you can. It's so rare to get to see living legends. He has been covered by everyone. Bruce Springsteen, The Ramones, Gogol Bordello, The Eagles, Robert Plant/Allison Krauss, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Rod Stewart, Tori Amos, EVERYONE.
Look up TV appearances, especially "Chicago " and "Chocolate Jesus" on Letterman. Tom Waits jokes(?) he is banned from the YMCA, so I have a playlist for the gym. Some tracks for the uninitiated (in case the stranger stuff turns you off):
"Hope I Don't Fall In Love With You" ; "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" ; "God's Away on Business" ; "Blue Skies" ; "Make It Rain" ; "Satisfied" ; "All the World is Green" ; "Goin' Out West" ; "Hell Broke Luce" ; "Rains On Me" ; "That Feel" ; "Martha" ; "Please Call Me Baby" ; "Way Down in the Hole" ; "Drunk on the Moon" ; "Jersey Girl" ; "Cold Water" ; "Hold On" ; "Downtown" ; "House Where Nobody Lives" ; "Downtown Train" . He was guest vocals on "Tommy the Cat" by Primus.

Yes Tom Trauberts blues is based on the song waltzing Matilda but it also has its own meaning. The song is about sharing your feelings of despair and loneliness and desperately trying to get people to understand. A “Matilda” is a bundle of things. Like a hobo carrying his things at the end of a pole so he can move easier. “To waltz a Matilda” just means to get your things and get out to the world without an plan or a future. Basically a song is asking who will share this lonely life with me.

A friend introduced me to his music about 20 years ago. My first experience was him performing on Letterman with an electric garage lantern hanging from his shirt. If I remember right, the song was More Than Rain.
After that I got a copy of Swordfish Trombones. So my intro was the "weird" Tom. Closing Time, Small Change and Night Hawks At the Diner were revelations. He was already, with the stranger stuff, an artist I was beginning to really like. Hearing him croon those ballads made me start to love him.
Today he is among my 10 favorite artists ever. In any medium. I mean actors, painters, any artist. Waits is in my top ten favorites. He also, on top of being a great musician and singer and songwriter, is a fantastic actor.

The Waltzing Mathilda part is twofold. He wrote the song after being in Denmark and performing on danish television. He was accompanied on stage by a danish violinist, whose name is Mathilda. She wanted to show him the town afterwards and so they did. Drank and danced all night. So he literally went waltzing Mathilda. It is also an Australian folk song. The title is australian slang for travelling on foot with a bundle with your belongings slung over your back. It's one of the most beautiful songs written.

I’ve always seen Chocolate Jesus as a commentary on our consumerism and addictions and how those have become the things we worship these days. Waits is using chocolate/candy/sugary foods as a stand-in for our need for instant gratification and that “high” we desire, but that is ultimately destructive and leads to the “crash” down the line.

To my understanding, his big turning point before Swordfishtrombones was that he met his future wife, Kathleen Brennan. Both of them were into weird, avantgarde music, but Tom had never quite built up the nerve to let it show in his own stuff. She encouraged him to go for it, and also came to be a pretty integral part of the creative process. I think they were essentially a duo from that point on, at least in terms of songwriting.
As for his voice, there are old demos of him at like 19 or 20, already sounding tired and husky. His voice did get noticeably more gravelly in the 80's, but ironically, he actually quit smoking and drinking around that time. It was always primarily a storytelling choice. His style tends to make people underestimate him, but his fundamentals are pretty strong. He sounds the way he does because he wants to.
This is what I've pieced together anyway, though the tricky thing about Waits is that he's had a longstanding practice of deliberately misleading people about his personal life, so it's hard to know what's true and what isn't.

I recommend starting with Rain Dogs, because Marc Ribot's guitar is just plain great.

I was introduced to Waits with Swordfishtrombones. I didn't get it, and I didn't exactly enjoy it, but something kept drawing me back again and again. Through all the weirdness was woven great melodies, and the lyrics. Oh, the lyrics! Shore Leave, A Soldier's Things, Swordfishtrombone! To me he goes beyond musician and songwriter to bard! He is weird America's bard!

Sorry, I have to say that it's not just his 80s work, his 70s stuff is groundbreaking. Nighthawks is essential listening!

You should have played Kentucky Avenue or A little Rain or On the Nickel,or Jersey girl,or Heart Attack and Vine or Blue Valentine...thede are the songs i introduced my teenager to and he appreciates how good toms music is. He doesn't like the more obscure stuff .

I really like the 80's+ Tom Waits, Swordfishtrombones might be my fav album, for me the 70's stuff is just to normie for me, but I really do love Blue Valentine, great album.

Waits is great, really a visionary. One of the few artists to be covered by multiple genres of music. He's almost like the opposite of Weird Al. He's so weird that people try to make normal versions of his music, lol. =D
