Undergrad was 20 years ago, can I still be a Physician Assistant (PA)!

  • In today's Pre-PA Q&A, I answer a question from a pre-PA student who completed her undergraduate degree in biology more than 20 years ago! I discuss how to make a plan for success, including: choosing what schools to apply to, what pre-requisite classes to take, whether or not to take the GRE, and of course a backup plan in case PA school is too competitive for her at this time in her journey.
This topic is particularly close to my heart because I myself was an older physician assistant (PA) student. Older PA school applicants have unique challenges - we are often changing careers to become a PA, some of us are in serious long-term relationships and might even have children, and a lot of us did not do well in undergrad and are working towards attaining a second chance at getting into PA school.

Hey Boris! Thanks for all of your great content! I'm starting PA school in 5 weeks. Excited and nervous. I know it's going to be an academic marathon but definitely doable! I'm so grateful to join this amazing profession. 👍

What about schools that don't have expiration dates on classes? I've found about 15 or so. I took my general bio/chem over 10 years ago and want to finish my prereqs now. Do you think they take into consideration that you have some older prereqs? Trying to figure out if it's worth saving a year of prereqs if I don't need to retake them.

That’s a great question for the admissions folks at the schools you plan to apply to
